Mixed feelings about this place. Prices don't seem to be listed on any of the items, so you will have to ask. The chocolates are reasonably priced for gourmet chocolates (~$1-3 each) and taste good, with something like three cases to choose from. Service was fast, but they forgot to package some of our chocolates. When we called about the issue, they did offer us a refund. On the other hand, the pricing of the pastries was astronomical. The one we bought (white rose) cost $18, when I've had a similar pastry in Arlington, VA that only cost $11. Taste-wise, it was fine. They also offer gelato and gift boxes, but we didn't buy any so I can't comment on them. The back of the shop is decently sized and has one or two tables for people to sit at, but the part of the shop that goes past the chocolate cases is very narrow. If somebody has a walker/wheelchair/stroller, or a group in front of you forms a cluster, you probably won't be able to move past them. read more

Stopped off at this sweets shop to grab some treats for the family. They offer imported chocolates from Neuhaus and Guylian as well as their own chocolates and just beautiful pastries. They also sell tea and coffee and other assorted foodie friendly items that make great gifts. I was focused on the chocolates - which are just so pretty it was hard to choose. Ended up with a box of twelve assorted pieces. Then I saw the pastries case - and ended up getting several of those for the family too. I have since sampled several of the chocolates and now I'm sad I didn't buy more! They are sooooo good! Not cheap, you're definitely paying for a premium product here, but well worth the money. They currently have a wide variety of chocolate Easter eggs, bunnies and chicks available and they're oh so adorable! If you're looking to fill an Easter basket or two you should definitely check them out! The lady who rung me up was so kind and sweet - a real treasure. When traveling I make a point of investigating as many chocolate shops as I possibly can. The Frenchman's Corner popped up on my radar in Culpeper, so of course I had to go! Upon entering, we were greeted by a French man (imagine!) who promptly offered us toffee as well as picked on my husband. We were pretty much immediate best friends. The toffee, though! It had white chocolate (they also offer it with milk and dark chocolate as well as a strawberry version), and while I don't usually care for white chocolate, it was delicious: Thick, but not break your teeth hard, and topped with a little sea salt, too! I bought some with dark chocolate, and it was amazing as well. They carry Neuhaus Chocolates from Belgium, which are apparently pretty fancy. When I let the owner know I hadn't had them before he gave me one to sample....pretty dang wonderful. I ended up picking out a little under half a pound. He was very patient as I made my selections. Standouts were the Manon Orange, Astrid, Criollo, and Suzanne. They also have other brands of chocolates and truffles including Moonstruck and Marich (along with several others), gelato, caramels, prepackaged chocolate bars and other sweets, beautifully decorated desserts, and some savory items like Virginia Peanuts, The prices are reasonable. Neuhaus chocolates are $65 a pound, however because they are quite small I felt like I got quite a few (maybe ten or so?) for about $20. The other chocolates are sold by the piece, and range in price from $1-$4. The space is fairly large, but they had several cases of chocolates, so it was well utilized. The interior wasn't particularly well decorated, but it wasn't unattractive by any means. While my ideal chocolate shop would consist of chocolates made in store, that is a rarity, and I was very pleased with the amount, variety, and quality of product here. Stop by The Frenchman's Corner, then make sure you have some time to wander around a bit as Culpeper has a really darling little downtown area. read more

This is a sophisticated boutique cafe and chocolate shop in the heart of Culpeper. We could not believe we found someplace in this small Virginia town that sold Neuhaus chocolates. They also sell gelato, and offer an elegant seating area to while away the time while indulging in some of the most fabulous chocolates the world has to offer. Walking into this small cafe was like walking into a little shop in France. The chocolatier was a bit pretentious, but if I had a chocolate shop with offerings that rival any city here or abroad, I might be a little pretentious too. read more

The owner, Marc, is such a welcoming individual when you enter the store while he is there. In fact, all the employees there are warm and inviting. This place is amazing. I'm a huge fan of chocolate truffles and ice cream, but finding a place that sticks to real ingredients (rather than 'natural flavoring') can be quite a challenge. But The Frenchman's Corner fits the bill. Of particular note are their key lime truffles (made with actual key limes -- almost unheard of) and their vanilla ice cream (which is so completely natural that it likely tastes a bit different than what you're used to). This place used to be just a tiny rather dark little wine shop with just a few other complementary items tossed in for good measure. Hubby & I popped in a couple of weekends ago, & all we could say was WOW! They've tripled the space, made everything light & airy, & have expanded their offerings. Besides the wines, artisinal beers, cooking implements & accessories, lovely imported cheese counter (with some artisinal sausages), crackers, sauces/bruschetta toppings, & tri-colored pastas, their centerpiece is a large 3-sided glass counter dedicated to the delicate jewel-like artistry of Belgian Neuhaus chocolates - many of which look far too pretty to eat. These are available both prepackaged & by the pound (wherein you can make individual selections from the case). On the day we visited (right before Halloween), they were giving out samples of various "pumpkin" & other autumnal-themed ales, & the lovely woman manning the cheese counter had plenty of customers. She LOVES "talking cheese", & is more than willing to open any cheese package for sampling. (A terrific byproduct of this is that many of the pricey wrapped cheeses end up in small portions - just perfect when you may want to purchase several selections but don't want to buy large pieces.) We signed up to be on their e-mailing list. Apparently they are also now offering wine & cheese tasting seminars/evenings, & are planning on expanding their offerings even further. They also opened up a 2nd store last month down in Fredericksburg, VA. Needless to say, we left with a nice selection of cheese & some artisinal crackers to enjoy later that evening. Just have to add to the praises of this shop. Every time I stop by I manage to leave with something new to try out, if I wasn't already treated to samples in the store. Have spent plenty of time just chatting with Jeffrey on the new beer, wine, and cheese selections, and his knowledge on all three is always remarkable. Varied and interesting selection for beer, though I could use a little more local selection. Not the case on the wine side which has the local scene covered, as well as favorites from everywhere else. The front of the store is packed with everything else you might want for the cook in your family, though my target is usually right to the back where the beer, cheese, and wine is displayed in an open, friendly environment! My husband, friends and I had just had a big dinner when one of our friends suggested The Frenchman's Corner. I hesitated at first, but then a passerby saw I was debating and told me to "go in and check it out because it is life changing." I'm glad I did. We were immediately greeted by the extremely friendly owner (the Frenchman himself) and he gave us samples. I knew I had to have more. We picked out several more chocolates out of the impressive selection and managed not to eat them all in the car. The quality of the chocolate is impeccable. I love visiting the Frenchman's Corner. They're a cool little family-run shop right in the middle of historic Culpeper that sells everything from high-quality kitchen tools & gadgets to the hard-to-find (and scrumptious) Neuhaus chocolates. I personally enjoy their selection of teas, locally roasted coffees and ice cream. One of the things I noticed after visiting for a few years now, is that they're way ahead of the curve when it comes to the brands they sell, which are always synonymous with quality. For instance, they were selling Nespresso machines years before you could find them anywhere else. They also sell Staub cookware and Shun knives, which tend to be brands of choice to many professional chefs. You can tell that they are a store for true kitchen enthusiasts, and the owner, Marc, along with his helpful staff reinforce this impression. By the name of the store you would think that one could find uniquely French items but you would be sadly mistaken. What we found were overprices kitchen gadgets and belgium chocolates. The only redeeming part of the experience was the cheese and wine shop at the back of the store which we found out that it was separate from the main shop and to be moving soon.
