Visited for lunch while in the area for business last week and this restaurant came up as the top choice in town. The building is large and easily accessible from highway. Plenty of parking and a drive through window to pick up your call in orders so you don't even have to get out of your car! I went inside to pick up my order and they had everything I needed: silverware, extra napkins, straws and condiments. The server who helped me was super nice! The meal I chose was one of their specials for the day. It was a Super Grilled Cheese which came with cheddar, bacon, tomato and mayo and served with a cup of tomato soup. The soup was fantastic and tasted very fresh! I thoroughly enjoyed that. The sandwich, not so much. The mayo was so overwhelming and the cheese was way too goopy. I opened the sandwich up and tried to wipe off all of that mayo, but it just didn't work. I wouldn't recommend that dish. I imagine I'll go back again for another shot because though my choice didn't pan out, I know they make their food in house and there must be better menu items to try! Will update when I do.

I had a meal at this restaurant and was not satisfied at all. I left a review on their Facebook page and someone (who I assume is the owner) and someone from their Facebook account continued to call me a liar, a fake, or an ex-employee named "Megan" who they must have fired. At one point they even wanted me to come up there and tell them in person. It was very unprofessional and just proved my point of terrible service and food.

One of my favorite parts of my job is visiting schools in small towns across NC and asking locals where the best hole in the wall to eat is. I was skeptical when no one had heard of The Fresh Depot but I decided to trust the Yelp reviews and give it a shot. I enjoyed a vegetable platter with collard greens, hand cut fries, fried okra, and deviled eggs with a croissant. Unbelievable! I didn't even need salt and pepper or pepper vinegar on my collards which is rare. Salad bar also looked good. Will return!

The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because the restaurant had no beers on tap, yet it advertised as a gastro pub. I had a can of beer, it was good but this is not a place to go for beer- they only had chilled glasses. This is the place to go for a good lunch or light dinner!! I had the fish special great for 10$. Freshly fried flounder served with coleslaw and a side; I had the red beets which were served hot and not room temperature. My hubby had a bacon burger with thick bacon and the best French fries! The fries were thin, with pieces of skin and were served hot so the salt stuck perfectly to each fry- perfect with vinegar. I hope this place can develop a personality as either a gastro pub, fresh, local food or lunch spot. Right now it's trying to be everything, the decor is sparse; not inviting. The food and service was great (waiter had great suggestions) but not a "hanging out" atmosphere. Restaurant is great for pick up orders or a fresh and quick lunch.

Another good addition to a growing Downtown Hickory. The food was good. The staff was nice, but seemed inexperienced. I am torn between 3 and 4 stars. I went with 3 because it did take a little while to get my food. I will definitely eat here again.

Eh. That's about the gist of our experience at The Fresh Depot. My husband and I had driven by the restaurant a couple of times and finally decided to give it a try. It's not that it was horrible, it was just underwhelming. Nothing at all stood out or was impressive about the interior of the building - just plain and simple. I will say that it was pretty cold inside the building and my husband and I had to keep our coats on throughout our entire meal. We ended up getting the buffalo shrimp as an appetizer, which were your standard buffalo shrimp - no surprises. For dinner, my husband got hamburger steak with a side of smashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. They did not have gravy for the hamburger steak, so my husband got with sautéed onions on top. I got a burger that I can't remember the name of now, but it had a fried green tomato and pimento cheese on it, with a side of fries. My husband's hamburger steak was dry and undercooked (a big no-no for hamburger steak) and the sides were extremely bland. He said the Hawaiian roll that came on the side was the best part of his meal. My burger, however, was actually really good - was it a $12 burger? That would be a stretch. My fries were a little over-cooked and dark...like they had been cooked in old oil or something, maybe? So the meal was about half-n-half. Service was good - our waitress was friendly and on top of things. Overall the experience was just average. We can say that we went, and once was enough for us.

The food is overcooked, especially the fried okra. On two consecutive occasions, the okra was practically incinerated.

We look for highly rated restaurants, close to the interstate and which have outdoor seating because we have dogs. Bringing water for our dogs and cups to take our sweet tea with us, our server, Kiersten, was the epitome of friendly southern hospitality. The barbecue was delicious. You could see the smoker on the property. What set this apart was the choice of sides. There were several sides such as green bean casserole and creamed corn that you don't see at other barbecue joints. We will definitely be back on our next trip to NC.

Easily the best thing on the table and definitely worth trying. Unfortunately, everything else just didn't live up to it. The BBQ and brisket were a letdown -- lacking flavor, not as tender as expected, and just didn't have that true smoked BBQ quality you look for, especially in a place like Hickory where the standard is high. Service and atmosphere were fine, nothing bad there, but when the main focus is the food, it just didn't deliver the way I hoped it would. Left feeling disappointed and honestly wishing I had gone somewhere else. Might give it another shot down the road, but based on this visit, it didn't live up to the hype for me.

1 star. Absolutely horrible customer service experience…read more I was the ONLY person in line and made it all the way through the salad stations. All that was left was lids for my dressing, bread, paying, and leaving. Another customer walked in BEHIND me and instead of finishing my order, the employee completely stopped helping me and took the new customer through the ENTIRE line while I stood there waiting. I then had to wait 5-8 minutes while the second customer slowly decided on ingredients and changed her mind multiple times. The person behind me got almost full uninterrupted service while I -- the first customer in line -- was left standing there waiting. What made it even worse was the manager's response. He defended the employee, told me she "did nothing wrong," and completely dismissed my frustration with a "have a nice evening." The issue wasn't just the wait. It was being skipped over and then treated like my frustration didn't matter. I've been there around 5 times in the last month, but after this experience, I will never return.

There is local artwork displayed on the walls as you enter. You place your order directly at the counter, take a number, and your food is brought out to your table when it is ready. The menu is quite large, and it took a bit of time to decide on my order, but I ultimately went with a combo including a half ham wrap, a drink, and a side of pasta salad. The cashier was very good about openly telling everyone in line about price differences from the printed menu before ordering. Because the kitchen was experiencing a significant delay, it seemed like they quietly upgraded me to a whole wrap as a nice peace offering! It came cut into two parts, with one part wrapped neatly in foil. Personally, I really wish they offered a "build your own" option where you could just choose your own specific bread, meat, cheese, and toppings, rather than having to hunt through the large preset menu options to find a combination where you like everything. I was really surprised by how incredibly small the side portion of pasta salad was--about the size of a standard salad dressing container! I've honestly never seen a side dish served that small before, so I posted a photo of the two side by side to show the exact comparison. Next time, I would skip the combo entirely and just order the sandwich on its own. The ham wrap itself was really good, and the small bite of pasta salad was very tasty. However, it did take quite a bit longer than it should have for the food to leave the kitchen, so this slow wait time could definitely be an issue for someone on a tight lunch schedule.
