I went to the Fret House for a Bryan Bowers concert. The staff were very accommodating and made for a pleasant experience. The only negative aspect of the evening was the elderly woman who had to sing along loudly with Bryan Bowers, I did not purchase a ticket to listen to her sing out of tune and she did not even know the lyrics. The Scotsman is a truly wonderful song, Bryan is very entertaining and a wonderful performer, the elderly woman was not. read more

I have a 1950's vintage Silvertone archtop that I got from Ebay for $100.00 over a year ago. I rarely played it; it was in rough shape; needed a set up, etc. I finally took it to The Fret House in Covina. The tech analyzed it and emailed me that it needed to be re-glued in several places; neck adjustment, and so forth. I said I didn't want to spend a lot, so we agreed on a $100 price, and it was guaranteed to be playable. Needless to say, I am very pleased. I've been a long time customer of the fret house since I was teenager. Very friendly staff - they allow me to plug in and play. Best of all they are a Mesa Boogie retailer. I love Mesa amps this may be the only one in the area. Combined with guitar/amp repair and service, this shop does it all. Keep in mind this small shop does not have many guitars to choose. Terrible customer service except for Kevin and a young Asian gentleman. I just went to pick up my bass after a set up. When I walk in no one acknowledges me although there are no other customers. I try my bass and my initial perception was that the action had not been lowered. The tech with brown hair in a ponytail and glasses immediately responded "that's not true" in a defensive manner. He never spoke of the change in spec and went on tell me how my neck was in bad shape and he lowered the saddles. I asked for a pair of scissors to cut the tag off of my case. Instead of providing these with me the older man with long white/grey hair asked that I rip off the tag and deal with the string at home. I paid and left. I won't return. I don't care if it's local or if Kevin and Henry are cool. read more

I've taken a couple of my guitars in for setups & pickup replacements and it seems like each time there has been some issue. The first incident was about four years ago and involved one of my Les Pauls where the tech incorrectly wired a new set of pickups so I wound up having to take my guitar back in so the pickups could be correctly re-installed. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago where I, again, took in another one of my guitars for the same thing: a setup and pickup replacement. My Jackson Monarkh went in with two working volume knobs and one tone knob; it came back with one working volume knob. The other two knobs.... Well they currently don't do much of anything at the moment. So, now I have to take my guitar back in so they can fix whatever it is they did wrong. It's a shame really as the people here genuinely seem nice but I doubt I'll be coming back for a third attempt at having their techs work on my gear. read more

This place use to be my favorite place to go for all my tech services, but apparently an Employee named KEVIN has a personal issue with clients who are a little more needy than others. He totally jacked up my last work order, he quoted me a price and when I came to pick up my guitar it was not as I asked. I was willing to work with that, but when I called the shop he hung up on me three times and past me of to someone else. Its shocking how some people stay in business treating customers like this. I will never EVER go here again and I reccomend no one else does either. I was treated like gold until my husband went to pick up my last order. Maybe he has issues with the LGBT community. I have had only good experiences at The Fret House. A few repairs on my Taylor and most recently I brought in a Martin to have a strap hook put on the bottom of the neck. The prices they quoted were what I paid and the repairs were always done well and professionally. I have been a musician for a number of years and to respond to some of the complaints about the customer service in this store, I guess i haven't seen it much at The Fret House but if you want a bubbly smiling sales guy (I know a bit exaggerated) you won't find it in most music stores. Most musicians have a bit of a-hole in their blood. I suppose I can see they might get a bit salty at times but they do a damn good job and I never feel ripped off on repairs or items purchased. These guys are awesome. I used to take lessons here in my teens and recently came back to playing with Covid giving me nothing but time. I gave them a run down of what I was looking for and they were very quick to get back to me with what they had and what they could order. The guitar was set up and has been nothing but great since. However, the staff answered my newbie questions without making me feel stupid. Businesses like this stay relevant in this "Amazon" era because people want to be able to ask questions and get suggestions for a real human being. I would have to say my experience here was kind of awkward.... First off they weren't friendly towards me. I felt like I was bothering them when I went in. I went in on a Monday. There were two men in there, one at the register and another walking around the shop, which was the owner. The owner greeted me and helped me. I told them I was looking to buy a six string acoustic guitar, and my budget was around $400. I liked that he showed me a bunch of different guitars and all of my options. He also let me play them to see which one I liked best. When I finally picked out a guitar, the man at the register quoted me a low price (I wanna say about $270-$280- and by the way, I bought an A&L Cedar Dreadnought). I told him I wanted to buy it a few days later and not that exact day, so I wanted to put it on lay away. Also, the man I talked to said that when people buy guitars here they do the first two restringing's free. So I was like YAY! Things started getting awkward for me because the man at the register started saying stuff under his breath to the other employee that had just walked in. Not sure of the exact words but I know the gist of the conversation, I guess what happened was they quoted me a really low price when he could have charged me a lot more. So apparently he got upset and told the guy they needed to update the price tags or list (whatever it is they go by). It got really quiet and awkward and I had no idea what to say to break the silence haha. And then he finally said "But we cant do anything about it. We have to honor the price we gave her since that is what we quoted her with." The whole time I was thinking, "really, you can't have this conversation after I leave?" I picked it up two days later, and they checked it for me and everything to make sure it didn't need any adjustments. I asked the guy about the free restringing's and he was like "Uh No...we don't do that." So at this point I feel really awkward because well, ONE: I feel like I'm a burden and that I'm bothering them, and TWO: I feel like they think I'm trying to low ball or scam them.... Overall, I kept my business here because I like the fact that they specialize in acoustic guitars, so they are really knowledgable about them. They only carry top of the line guitars and they do so at a good price. I WAS gonna get lessons here, but after experiencing unfriendliness I will look elsewhere. However since this is the only guitar shop in my area I am going to continue to go here for restringing, and other guitar stuff I need.... Mehhh. I wouldn't say don't go here at all but I would say if you go here don't except them to be nice or friendly towards you. :( But the owner is friendly at least... read more

Was looking for a place to have my first guitar lessons since watching Youtube videos and reading tabs wasn't working for me. Wanting also to properly learn how to read music. So I Yelped and found the Fret House. $20 per lessons with Mark. Must pay for a block of 4 up front. Seemed reasonable and would make me motivated to continue to go :-) Much like registering and paying for a race to keep one focused on training. So I talked to Bryan on the phone and set it up. Upon entering for the first time Bryan greeted me and introduced me to Mark. He led me to a small telephone booth sized room where lessons would take place. A little uncomfortable at first lol. But once I got used to it so it's cool. I have nothing to compare it to though so. Anywho. Staff is pretty helpful and my experience thus far has been good :-) Lot parking in the back and some street in front. read more

This is an update to the review I wrote over a year ago regarding a vintage Martin that the so-called Frethouse Guitar Tech (I won't call him a Luthier....don't want to insult any Pros that might be reading this) attempted to repaired. The guitar was taken to someone who actually knew what they were doing and His comment was that He had never in all of His many years of repairing vintage guitars, had such a slip-shod repair job. He went on to say that the pick guard was not only poorly cut from a sheet of material (as opposed to actually spending the twenty bucks on a reproduction, vintage one) but it was the wrong color. I have since sold the guitar and I estimate that I lost a third of the guitars value by having the Fret House repair my instrument. An expensive lesson for me, but hopefully, not for anyone who's reading this review. read more

This is my favorite guitar shop! Their selection of acoustic guitars are by far the best in the San Gabriel Valley and maybe even the whole Los Angeles area. I've been playing guitar for over 15 years and last year I finally decided to invest in some real quality musical instruments. Initially I decided to purchase a Taylor or a Martin because I love how they play and I thought they were one of the best in the business. Boy did I have a lot to learn. I pretty much searched through their entire stock of guitars, I seriously must have visited the shop 4 times in one week before I finally made my choice with a Santa Cruz O/M PW, an amazing guitar and the Fret House had everybody in the area beat with their price. It was about a thousand dollars cheaper than other guitar shops. I also recently bought a used Orange Rocker 30 amp head through them that was flawless. I got an amazing deal, $875. I love this place because they have really high end stuff with really reasonable prices. All their workers really know their stuff about their guitars, especially the owner and his son, two really nice guys. Before you go and buy something at Guitar Center go ahead and call The Fret House first to see if they can price match (which they have always done for me)............ support your local shops. Oh yeah and I also forgot to mention that they have a little concert hall where they hold musical events about once a week. I've never made it to one of their events but just something else to throw out there. read more

Some of their merchandise was a bit pricier than other spots but I guess that's just what it takes these days to compete with the bigger companies. OK, so my tech has one of my guitars for many months and is unable to fix a problem with a piezo transducer. I contact the manufacturer, who refers me to the Fret House, so I drop my guitar off so they can have a look. Two days later, my axe is fixed, and the price is downright cheap.
