My husband and I visited The Gage after seeing it on the Michelin Guide as a Select restaurant. It's located right across Millennium Park on Michigan Avenue. The inside is very pretty and large. We had made a reservation but decided to sit in the bar to enjoy some Happy Hour deals. For drinks, we enjoyed a first round of the Old Fashioned and French 75. The French 75 was a bit sparkling wine forward over gin but the Old Fashioned was straight forward. For our second round, we got The Original & The Jack Rose "Flawless Martini Service". This definitely fell flat as the cocktail was prebatched, pulled out of a fridge and placed on a tray for you to self serve. Portions on drinks overall were small so we were happy we got the happy hour price as it wouldn't be worth the regular price. For food, we got a variety of the happy hour dishes. The curds and pickles had good, flaky batter but not much taste otherwise. The chicken and burger sliders as well as the truffle fries were definitely our favorite but burgers came with no sauce. The grilled oysters were small but good. What really disappointed us throughout was the lack of service. With the amount of staff walking around compared to patrons dining in, we were shocked how long we had to wait for a server to even greet us let alone check in throughout. We were left with empty plates and drinks for 10-15 minutes at a time. Additionally, the bar staff was taking selfies and had no idea what we were talking about when asking about the "featured cocktail" listed on menu. Overall, I left feeling like The Gage is more of a tourist spot than locals destination. Great downtown location, right across from both Millenium Park and the Art Institute. The park being the largest tourist draw in the whole state of Illinois ensures that there is plenty of foot traffic to watch. If you love people watching, then, yes this is definitely the place for you. I was here after enjoying some live Jazz at the Chicago Jazz fest across the street. How was the food? Actually, it was very good. I enjoyed a salad and Hawaiian tuna tartare (poke). The fish and chips were served the way that I like them. Large pieces of cold-water white fish battered and fried (yum) with inhouse made tarter sauce and malt vinegar and delicious fries. We could barely taste the burrata and wouldn't recommend this appetizer. Our mains were fish and chips and the fusillini, which were both good but simply average. The Rosé line up surprisingly didn't include a Côtes de Provence; although they did offer a few selections. The highlight of our meal was dessert. We had the Profiteroles which were prepared like perfect little ice cream sandwiches atop caramel and served with a side of warm chocolate sauce. It's a huge restaurant and it's always pretty busy but we figured we would not get in without a reservation on 3/17! Came here for drinks after a dinner of deep dish pizza. Usually when a Google description says "gastro pub" it leans more towards the "pub" side with sticky dark booths and sports games on the TVs. But the Gage was upscale and gorgeously designed, with an extensive signature cocktail menu to boot. We ordered: - a mezcal, gochujang, and pomegranate sparkling water drink, where the spicy gochujang played well with the smokiness of the mezcal - an old fashioned twist with cardamom and spring flavors. I couldn't stop smelling the light floral scent of this cocktail haha. While it didn't taste like a traditional old fashioned, the cardamom and other flavors were so light they were barely detectable - a hot toddy that was once again basically $20 hot tea. What does a woman have to do around here to get a strapping, strong, and syrupy hot toddy?! - a springtime drink with a liquor type we googled to be a type of wine and other springtime flavors like honeydew melon. Refreshing! I had wanted a nibble between drinks but wasn't feeling my usual fries and I only eat oysters if they're on a $1 each special. Nothing on the dessert menu caught my eye so I ended up ordering a Caesar salad because I love the fishy crunch. But unfortunately the dressing was too overtly fishy for even my taste, and the Romain wedges came out artisanally whole. If I'm going to pay $17 for a salad can you at least chop the lettuce for me?! While we ended up sitting here for almost 3 hours and I enjoyed the variety in the drink specials, I expected better taste delivery for the prices. Logistics: - indoor seating (mix of high top tables and bar seating splitting dinner and drinks), but the outdoor seating might have been for the neighboring sister restaurant- unclear - entrance is south side of covered patio. If you enter building lobby on north side of covered dining you've gone too far and hit the neighboring restaurant - limited street parking nearby but close to the loop transit - I think there was mocktail options on the menu - we were able to walk in for two at 8pm on a Saturday. The Gage is a huge and busy restaurant on Michigan Avenue. Our server was lovely and did an excellent job. The tables are tightly packed in and there were a ton of big groups seated throughout. The food is very tasty. We started with an Apple Orchard Salad and the sweet and sour apples mixed with delicious sharp cheese crumbles and a mustard vinaigrette hit the spot. SOLID Meal every time I've been here. I usually come with friends when I'm in town this time it was a family just before the Bears game. It was easy to make a reservation. It's kind of a fun atmosphere especially on Sunday is when it is the Bears game because a lot of people around you are all headed to the game. Service was unbelievably friendly and efficient. We walked right in on a Monday afternoon and got a table inside with no wait. I ordered the burger, which was cooked perfectly medium rare and was pretty solid overall. I also got a cappuccino, which was surprisingly great for just $6. The staff was super friendly, and our waiter even took the time to chat with us about the restaurant's décor and history, which added a nice touch to the experience. While the food isn't necessarily mind-blowing, The Gage has great lunch options and is in an ideal location for anyone visiting the Art Institute or in the loop in general. My friend and I were immediately seated and the leather booth was quaint and intimate, befitting for a first date. since its january, the resolution about dropping some pounds was still on my mind so I orderd a salad with grapefruit, seafood gumbo and a chocolate cake. Salad with grapefruit: I closed my eyes and took my first bite and I transported to a meadow and felt as though i was a spoiled brat bunny rabbit having a lush serving of citrusy tangy flavored lettuce that was both crispy and light. I was taken aback by the Bugs Bunny first hand view of nutritious love in edible imagery (yummy) Gumbo: the serving given was generous. 3 jumbo shrimp nested a top a thick and hearty concoction of spiciness on a pillowy bed of rice. The shrimp was delectable however, the stew was too rich for my liking. We had a noon brunch reservation and were seated right away, which was a great start. The dining space is Irish pub-inspired and way bigger than I expected. It has a classy vibe with dark tones and fun photography on the walls. It was a bit odd that we walked past a lot of empty dining area and tables, only to be seated in a small, packed room where we were elbow-to-elbow with other diners. The noise level was pretty loud, making it hard to have our own conversation without being drowned out by everyone else's. The staff was attentive and really friendly, but due to the cramped space they had to awkwardly lean over to deliver our plates, which wasn't a big deal at all but definitely something we noticed. We started with the spoon cheese appetizer. The cheese had a strong but pleasant flavor and was super gooey in the best way. It was served with nuts, fruit paste, and toasted bread. Ironically, no spoon was provided, which felt like a weird oversight. We ordered peach Bellinis ($15) as well, which tasted as you'd expect. For my main dish, I had the cheddar biscuits and gravy ($21). The Tasso ham gravy was salty, savory, with just the right amount of heat. I could eat a bowl of that. The over-easy eggs on top were perfectly cooked and runny. The biscuits themselves were dense and tough and couldn't be cut with a fork. My sister's stuffed French toast stack ($16), on the other hand, was delicious. It looked stunning- it's the kind of dish that when you see a server walk by with it you're like "ohhh what is that?". The bread was sweet with lots of blueberry to balance out the cream cheese filling, and a cup of maple syrup on the side. No notes here, it was the dish I'd recommend. Portion sizes were solid for everything we ordered, filling without needing a doggy bag. Prices felt reasonable for the area. All things considered, I'd give them another chance. Food: The food was great! I went out with friends and each stated they loved their meals. We all split the Brussels Sprouts Tartine between four people which was enough for everyone to have a small bite. I enjoyed the Hudson Scallops. The dish was flavorful, however, I did find it a bit smaller in portion than I was expecting for the price. Nonetheless, the food there is well seasoned --just a little pricey, but considering the area it isn't too out of range for a nice dinner with plenty to do before or after. The bill was around $470 for five people. There was one appetizer, five entrees, two bottles of sparkling wine, four cocktails. After tipping, we all paid around $115 each. 4/5 Service: the service was great. We did have one server come by then we had a different server for the rest of the night. We just assumed that the other server had ended their shift, but either way, both servers were attentive and were pleasant. 5/5 Ambiance: the interior design was beautiful! I love the idea of the randomness of the painting and photos on the wall. The music wasn't too loud. I will say the arrangement of was a little tight when walking to the washrooms, which were downstairs (there is an elevator), but I still found it a beautiful restaurant for date nights, a solo dinner, or with friends. 4/5 Overall: 13/15 read more

Started with the fried pickles & poutine and that poutine was soooo good, some of the better poutine in the states. Got the Elk Rack and it was good, but not amazing like I expected it to be. I used to live within a mile or so of this place for 15 years and I for some reason never came here. I finally tried it with a large group for a private lunch. Service was surprisingly prompt for our fairly large group. We ordered various items off the menu and everything we ordered was plated nicely and appeared to be freshly made. We were on our way to millennium Station to catch our train back home on a Sunday early afternoon and found this wonderful option for breakfast. We let the server know that our train was leaving within an hour and she expedited our service. Two of our three meals were prepared wrong. The pictures on the menu and the actual food look very different. Nothing wrong with the server, but he did the bare minimum. Would have had better service from a robot (the robot would understand the menu). Almost every restaurant in Chicago has more bang for your buck. Tables are too close together for anyone to provide excellent service. Go to Cindy's My job is tourism. I am embarrassed i brought people to this location.
