Blue Heron Bistro has wonderful service, great food and a comfortable atmosphere. We were excited to start off with oysters from Orcas Island just across the sound. They were delicious and huge in flavor with the fresh mignonette. The Dungeness crab mac and cheese is next level; the homemade pasta shells and cheese sauce are so good and they give you a lot of crab. Swung in here after a long morning of driving and hiking around Lopez Island. Greet by the friendly waitress. This time of year it's very slow on Lopez so we had the restaurant to ourselves. It's deceivingly large on the inside and plenty of outside sitting. Today was an inside kind of day. We ordered and enjoyed some cocktails before eating. We shared a clam chowder and a bacon jelly burger. Both very good and satisfying. We also spent a good time talking to Jerry who cooked our meal but I'm assuming is the owner. What a pleasant person. Enjoyed the conversation immensely. We ordered some desserts to have back at our hotel. Oh did I mention the desserts are made from scratch by them. Oh My! The food was amazing! The service was Devine. I arrived with two friends. One needed some extra help physically. They were accommodating and, as if they were old friends, were kind and inclusive. The food was unbelievably great in presentation, flavor, and quantity. I have never had a burger (Bacon Jam) with such succulence and combination of flavors. It was an experience all by itself. I had a side order of the onion soup and it was beyond anything I have eaten in knowing I was getting an originally made onion soup from fresh with the best ingredients. Each was a big enough serving, I had some to take home. One of my friends got the mussels in garlic sauce. The waitress made everything a joyful interaction and the chef served the food. My friend got the mussels in an individual cooking pot. What fun! We had a relaxing time with unforgettably great food in a setting where the staff made our elderly long eating time festive and a memorable event. The Basque Cheesecake was something I've treated myself to again and again. Service was slow and food was mediocre.. however they had only one bartender/server and it was one of the only options on the island. We got most of the pasta items - ravioli, chicken parm, chicken Marsala, and Tuscan chicken. All extremely bland paired with overcooked pasta. The bread pairing was tasty though. I recommend that the chef plays more with spices and blends the sauce in with the pasta rather than leaving it on top. It did the job for sure but it could do with some improvements. read more

The most delicious heirloom tomatoes I've had this year started off our dinner... Though the Blue Heron Bistro has only just opened up, their kitchen is doing great things already. The dishes we had there were delicious and the location is fantastic. I believe they are trying out different dishes right now so the menu may be changing over the next several weeks or months. Since it's been only a matter of days since they have been fully opened, they are still in the process of familiarizing new staff. The owners seem to be very engaged in this process and their staff is very diligent, so I'm sure they will sort out their processes in short order. If you decide to go, consider going for lunch or arriving early for dinner. The arrival of Blue Heron Bistro seems to have been eagerly anticipated by many people. I'll admit the first time we came here I was not very impressed! But now that they have their wheels under them and I've been back a few times since, I must say that this place doesn't disappoint! It's one of the only restaurants consistently open on Lopez besides the Islander. The last time we were in we had the tomato basil burrata which was delicious. Yesterday we had the special of the day which was salmon and it was amazing! Service is kind of slow but sitting out on the deck is so nice that it's not really a big deal. Quite disappointing. We were here 3-4 years ago and the food and service was good. Yesterday we had fish and chips. The fish was mushy and did not taste good. The steak was bland meat, poorly cooked and had an overbearing sauce. The bouillabaisse had lobster that was over cooked and not edible. The server seemed to be bothered that she had to work. It is a very nice restaurant, but they need to have better cooks and servers that want to enjoy their work. Hopefully they can get their act together. read more

Mother's Day 2024. Visited this amazing place and was totally blown away but the atmosphere, the people ( all the J's ) the service and the FOOD! We had just found the place on our morning sightseeing drive and thought it looked promising. Without reservations, we were invited to sit at the bar and enjoy the goings on. I've never seen 5-6 people in such a small kitchen wove so fluidly together, like a well coordinated dance. And the food was spectacular to say the least. I had the Shrimp Po Boy and my wife had the Crab Melt. Both were perfectly prepared and presented to us. For Mothers Day my wife splurged and had a Bloody Mary. Check your bill and your bank statement. They will try to charge you extra. We went there on Saturday for lunch. After being greeted at the door and taking our order, there was no service after that. We had to flag down another waiter to let him know that we ordered the crab melt with salad, not fries. He told us that he would get us a salad. Over half an hour later, we still had not received the salad or anything else, and no one had come back to us, so we gave up and asked for the bill. FYI you have to pay extra for the salad or fries and they had set their credit card machine to auto-tip start at 20%. I wasn't going to give them that much. I still tipped around 10% and rounded up to an even amount for the total. I noticed that they had charged a few dollars extra on my card. 0 stars if I could. Stay away from them. I should have gone to the ramen shop instead that day. read more

Second time at Blue Heron Bistro. First time, no reservation, sat at bar and watched the chef do his thing. This time we smartened up and got a reservation and a proper table. I ordered the Eggs Benedict with mushroom and the basil mushroom aioli both times. So delightful!! That meal was the reason we chose to return to Lopez Island to camp in the cold just 2 weeks after our first trip. It's worth the ferry fee and the cold. Coffee was also strong and got. Yummy! We have been on a search for the best clam chowder, and Blue Heron's entry was like nothing else we've tasted. The red potatoes are left skin-on, in satisfyingly large cubes, and cooked to buttery perfection. The clams, although a bit small in comparison to the potatoes, were soft, tender and flavorful--not a single rubbery chew in the whole bowl. For those who like a thick, hearty chowder, this fills the bill, and (hooray for the celiac's out there) it's gluten free--they do not use flour to thicken the sauce! The seasonings add to the magic, a little bit of heat and surprising notes of dill instead of the usual bacon and parsley--awesome! Served with perfectly toasted, thinly sliced sourdough (for the bread eater). We also enjoyed the baba ganpush with warm, crisp and substantial corn tortilla chips. I would rate it a 4-more robustly smoky than most I've tried, with just the right amount of acid bite. I gave it 4 stars because the use of oil seemed a mite heavy. The staff was warm and welcoming and fun. The place itself is small and cozy yet airy and open. Reasonable prices. But most importantly, the food was fantastic. Flavorful and complex, but not forced. It was our first time on the island, after taking the late ferry and getting settled into our stay we wanted dinner. This place closed at 8 and we called at 7:50, the gentleman who answered the phone said if we could get there soon they could get us food. We were a short walk and made it within 2 minutes. We got there and the people were SO kind!! They quickly got our food to go order and while we waited the woman there offered cocktails. They really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and make sure our bellies were full with some delicious food! Highly recommend stopping here! I recently ate here with friends on a Saturday evening, and the food wasn't so good. My burger, ordered medium rare, was well done and nearly as hard as a hockey puck. My friend asked the server whether he could order a half order of crab cakes to go with his Caesar salad, but she was afraid to ask the cook as he was already overwhelmed ( and the place was only 1/2 full). On the plus side, the outdoor patio is lovely, and the cocktails were excellent. I live on Lopez and had high hopes for Blue Heron, but after this experience I won't be going back for some time, which is a shame as we locals don't have many options for dining out. read more

I am a vegetarian so I had the fries with aioli and roasted beet salad . The aioli was delicious with dill and truffle. The beet salad had local goat cheese hazelnuts and a balsamic glaze. My friend had the roasted butternut squash soup which was delicious. It was nice to find a great meal while on vacation. The staff were nice and attentive.
