    Homemade biscuit! Delicious!

West Texas Goodness! This place is a must if you are looking for a homemade, well thought out breakfast. Homemade biscuits and quiche to die for. We tried the Jalapeño popper quiche which was tasty with the right amount of spice and nice flaky handmade crust. They make their own coffee and pastries. Don't miss this gem!

As implied by the name, The Gap Café by Perini Ranch is the sister restaurant of Perini Ranch Steakhouse, the world-class, unpretentious destination restaurant located right smack dab in the middle of nowhere: Buffalo Gap, Texas. I have a thorough, exhaustive review of Perini Ranch Steakhouse mulling about in my brain, but for now, I'll focus on this little breakfast/lunch spot about a mile down the road from the main attraction. On my first visit, I ordered the chicken-fried steak breakfast with two eggs, breakfast potatoes, and two biscuits. The chicken-fried steak ("country-fried" steak for yanks confused by Southern nomenclature) was tender, crispy, and seasoned simply with salt and pepper. I've had better iterations elsewhere, but I was satisfied with the texture (just the right amount of give) and beefy flavor. The accompanying sausage gravy -- served on the side per my request -- was much thicker than a traditional white cream gravy. I'd liken it to a fancier scratch-made version of the gravy served at Cracker Barrel. The kitchen gave me a heaping bowl of the stuff (far too much for the steak), so I improvised and made biscuits and gravy. One biscuit would have been enough, but I was a dolt and ordered two. The biscuits were dense but tasty with the distinct flavor of lard. My sunny-side eggs were cooked perfectly (i.e., runny yolk, no uncooked albumen). The generous portion cubed breakfast potatoes were crispy and desiccated on the outside and tender on the inside. The three-egg omelet I ordered on my second visit was massive and chock full of cheddar, sausage, and roasted hatch chilies. The kitchen was a little heavy-handed with the cheese, but who am I to complain about getting too much of anything? Despite being overstuffed, the omelet was cooked perfectly, a sign of a skilled cook. As with the chicken-fried steak, the omelet came with breakfast potatoes and a biscuit. The portions for both dishes were much larger than I expected, so come hungry and try not to overeat if you plan to have dinner at the steakhouse later that day. You will definitely want to save room for a ribeye or a burger. Trust me! Expect a bit of a wait if you arrive at a peak time, as the restaurant offers limited seating (approximately twelve tables) and the young servers seem a bit frazzled and out of their element. I looked hard for other breakfast joints in and around Buffalo Gap but fell short, so The Gap Café appears to the "it" place for locals and tourists alike.

Was in town visiting Abilene State Park when i stumbled upon The Gap Cafe for breakfast. Upon entering I was quickly greeted and seated. From what I could tell it's a small little cafe, not sure if there was more seating in the back but very quaint. Our server started us off coffee. They do also have some cafe latte, espresso, cappuccino if you do not want regular coffee. The coffee in my opinion was way better than anything Starbucks has to offer. The waitress advised they did sell bags of their coffee to go. I liked it so much I bought a bag to take home. Their breakfast menu is limited, they only offer 7 or 8 dishes but they all looked amazing. I ended up ordering the omelette, with potatoes, and toast. The food was fabulous, tasted very farm to table. Overall I had a great experience with the staff and the food at The Gap Cafe!

Bufalo Gap Cafe is overrated. My wife and I drove from Abilene to Buffalo Gap since friends recommended this place. We had to wait for twenty-five minutes for a table. That made our expectations grow a bit more since we thought that high demand meant excellent food." I was wrong. I ordered "Chilaquiles Verdes". It took an hour to get our food! The chilaquiles are plain chips with a tasteless green salsa and chicken; I ate half of it because I was hungry and not because I enjoyed them. The coffee is excellent, and the servers are pretty nice.

Awesome place! We love coming here! The ambience is real comforting and cozy. The service is just amazing, very polite. Our go to is the Breakfast Skillet or the Biscuits and gravy! Don't forget to try their fresh coffee. You will not be disappointed!

Camping at Abilene State Park, missed the chance to eat at Perini Ranch (closed on Mondays) so we took the short hop over here to enjoy a lunch before we head home. Quaint little cafe- be ready to sit back and relax: the hostess, Patsy, is the only server and she's got a broken wrist! So, we won't ding a star for the slow service, but somebody, get poor Patsy some help!! (It was more than 20 minutes before she was back around to take our orders). Small menu, but the descriptions have my mouth watering already. I'm thinking the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with Pomme Frities ("French fries the way they're supposed to be- twice fried. And, ours are tossed with fried jalapeño chips (because we're in Texas).") Hubby is going for the Strawberry Salad and the Ultimate Grilled Cheese. AN HOUR IN.... still no food, but I'll give the water with lemon 5 stars. Oy. I sure hope the wait is gonna be worth it. (BTW- Seeing the table that was sat after us (who were obviously friends to the hostess) get their meals before us isn't endearing us to the place. I get that every restaurant has its 'regulars' but a move like doesn't help.) Ok. So. Food finally arrived. About an hour from seated to fed. The fries are stellar (jalapeño should be in ALL fries from now on!). The chicken is tasty (I went by less, and glad I did. There's nothing special about the bread on this one). Hubby's grilled cheese is EXACTLY what you would hope for- crispy and grilled and gooey. Makes me want a side cup of tomato soup to dunk it in. Blueberry salad (they're out of strawberry) and hub's has cleaned the plate. Cleaned both plates, actually- we were ravished by the time the food finally arrived. (Take the review of the French fries with a grain of salt on this one). So, four stars for the food b/c I promised not to ding them for the service. But man, y'all, if it's just one hostess/waitress and one cook: bring a book. A big one. Cause it'll be a WAIT. PS: have something from the bakery case on your way out. OMG, the strawberry cinnamon bun is WHOA good and the Cowboy Cookie is worth every. Single. Calorie.

A wonderful little artisanal spot with a warm and welcoming staff. The coffee was just the right level of robust for me and the sausage skillet was fresh, an excellent serving size and really pretty in presentation. The omelet was hearty but not heavy and adding the jalapeños brought it over the top for me.

The Cafe is located just as you make the turn out of town to head to the State Park. They typically have a full breakfast menu but on this day their cook was sick, which meant it was pastries only. At first I may have been a tad disappointed because my wife had gone the day before and was raving about the fresh cooked menu. I learned quickly that I wasn't going to be disappointed for long. Atmosphere: Small rustic building with a limited amount of seating but it was definitely adequate as no one was having to wait even while they were slightly busy. Small tables throughout and it seemed they had a larger dining area for groups. Otherwise comfortable and fit the location. 1 Star Service: Very quick to wait on us and take our order as well as get our order to us. Supplies were becoming limited soon after we arrived so they were very quick to inform all of the patrons exactly how many of each pastry they had available. Delightful people. 2 Stars Food: I will be back to try the hot breakfast menu, but for now I will just praise the pastries. We ordered 4 different items. My Love ordered the quiche of the day which was Spinach and Mushroom with Cheddar, Swiss, and Feta cheese. There is no need for them to have a "Quiche of the Day." They could simply serve this one every single morning and I believe people would flock to it. It was amazing enough that I begged my wife to order another slice so I could eat more of it (she didn't sadly.) It was cheesy without being overwhelmed by the cheese. The feta was a fabulous addition. You could taste the musty and earthy flavor of it through the Swiss and Cheddar and they all meld perfectly with the eggs, spinach, and mushrooms. Superb. This dish alone is worthy of the 15 minute trip to Buffalo Gap, but then there is more. I ordered the Ham and Cheese Croissant which had a nice salty ham and a very thick melted slice of Swiss in the middle. Very tasty together, but what sets this pastry apart is the croissant itself. I have never had a croissant that was this buttery and flavorful. The perfect flake, the buttery smoothness, and just the right amount of chew. Superb. Finally (kind of) I also ordered a Parmesan and Prosciutto (one of my favorite foods) Scone. Flaky, slightly buttery, with nice chunks of prosciutto throughout. The Parmesan was subtle. As stated earlier, they were letting customers know how many pastries were left. As we were leaving there was only one of the "Cruffins" left. It is a croissant in the shape of a muffin and it is stuffed with raspberries and mascarpone cheese and then had an orange glaze on top. So glad I got it. 2 Stars Overall Impression: Worthy of the trip for sure. Just a short 15 minute jaunt and you won't be disappointed. All of the pastries were outstanding. I could see me ordering a dozen of the croissants alone and not sharing with anyone. We did also get a dozen of their sticky buns to eat for breakfast another day. I am anxious to return for the hot breakfast menu. 5 Stars.

The food and service were both amazing. All scratch made. Nothing frozen. It has a country atmosphere and very relaxing.
