Visited this lovely place after searching on Yelp for a real herbal supplement store while I was in the area. It's located in Santa Cruz just off of the freeway. The parking lot is a bit tight and there appears to be a small grocery store affiliated with it. The herbal store was much more expansive than I thought. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by Ramona. She was great and assisted me with what I was looking for. I appreciated her knowledge and I hope to visit again soon. Also the price of the supplements I bought were much more affordable in the store than anywhere online. I love that! read more

They have an amazing selection of loose herbs for teas or vitamin making. Lots of other natural vitamins without the nasty additives you've never heard of or can't begin to pronounce. Lots of great shampoos, soaps, etc. They also have the organic grocery store in the same parking lot. Extremely helpful employees are always an incentive to have. read more

Wonderful place to get natural soaps, oils, lotions, homeopathic drugs, herbs and everything you need to make your own teas and tonics. I spent many happy hours getting dried herbs, flowers, spices and barks and learning how to mix my own teas. The staff was a wealth of information and was helpful in supplementing my knowledge of which flowers and leaves had inherently sweet qualities to help balance some of the more bitter leaves. This is the other half of the food bin grocery, and is bulk sales location for just like it says in the name, herbs and oh so much more. Parking like a lot of spots in this part of santa cruz is a little bit wonky. There is an associated surface with room for maybe seven vehicles. Not very large spots either, so if you'e in a van, SUV or other super large trucklike thingy you might be best served parking down the side street on laurel. There is also a larger lot across the the street (Laurel I mean. not mission. Parking across mission at that bakery is bad idea.) but that's associated with a discount store. no real reason not to park and then cross as such really. This shop is on the smaller side and has made a specialty of selling herbal stuff in bulk. Having said that that, they also have more spices then you'll find this side of spice souk, all things oil related-aromatic, essential , and edible all kinds of soaps, supplements of all shapes purposes and descriptions, coffee, teas along with reusable and single use packaging for all of the above. If you are so inclined this is possibly the best place in Santa Cruz to buy cbd oil, not least because this place has the best pricing you'll find in town. If you are an herbalist or a home chef this place is a must do for sure. read more

I think my " food bin " review is actually mostly about the herb room here -- so check that out and I will repeat a bit too ! Love that they have refill-by -the-ounce of Dr Bronner soaps and other " bulk " cleaning supplies . I also love their wide selection of organic& edible grade essential oils . I have always found the staff to be helpful enough if asked a question , and I like that they don't try to " sell me " stuff as some supplement stores will . So I prefer their hands off approach , as I am a "label reader" and feel that I can take my time and browse here . They have a cute selection of gift items too & always a clearance sale table worth browsing . Another one of Santa Cruz's gems. I've passed the Herb Room on Mission thousands of times but have never gone out of my way to go in. Today I was looking for "Aztec Secrets" and low and behold, the only place in Santa Cruz that had it was the Herb Room! This is how my experience went at the Herb Room: 1. Park (small lot), go in and ask for the item I put on hold. Purchase item. 2. As I'm walking out, I stop and think, hey maybe I can buy something for my boyfriend. I ask the lady what she recommends for eczema, BOOM, kind lady busts out a huge book of herbal remedies, and leads to me the tea oil section. Second transaction. 3. One more time, heading for the door, and my eyes catch a wall, a HUGE wall of herbs... herbs galore. WAHH? This IS the Herb Room... hmm.. walk on over and oh my goodness, it looks like a medieval apothecary. This is where I grab a bag of chia seeds (1.15/oz ... not too shabby!!) and get a good 2 months worth of chia seeds. Walk over to register and proceed with my final transaction. This place is awesome, and also, I bought apple cider vinegar at the Food Bin which is right across the very tiny lot. I feel enlightened just from walking in (Ha). :) read more

Having super sensitive skin is a curse. After major surgery last September, my Dr has been hesitant to give me any scar remedies because of an allergic reaction to the stitches and adhesive from bandages. I've been looking for a natural, sensitive scar cream and stopped in here thinking that this looked like the place to help. The lady that helped me was super sweet, knowledgeable and didn't hesitate to recommend a scar gel. The Herb Room is a Santa Cruz local treasure. I used to come over the hill from San Jose just to visit the Herb Room (and, oh yes, to say hello to Mama Pacific.) Since now even the Whole Foods Market has mostly stopped carrying bulk herbs, oils, and lotions, the Herb Room has become a rare throwback to the Whole Earth '70s; you can even bring in your own bottles for the bulk oils and lotions -- just as if people still cared about eco-things like reuse and less packaging, and had not yet been reeducated by the Rupert Murdoch networks. The wonderful store people do indeed make you feel like there is nothing odd about this and you don't even have to feel guilty of commiting extreme woo-woo. Needless to say, the herb selection is amazing and the quality superb. May the Herb Room stay in business forever. One more reason of many Santa Cruz can be proud to be. read more

Loved to see that this place was still open during Covid, was super excited to go! However when I got there I was greeted in a less than enthusiastic manner by both employees. Proceeded to look at the list of herbs they did have available and when I asked for my first order, the employee helping questioned the amount saying, "that's all??" I was definitely going to order more, but the attitude really had me feeling off. The herb I ordered was running low anyways, so I left with a bad taste in my mouth. Customer service is extremely important at any establishment, hoping that this isn't a daily occurrence for other customers here. This is a tiny little store where I can buy bulk triphala and empty capsules. I can fill my own capsules and save money I can also buy giovanni organic shampoo and conditioner by the ounce (fill your own bottle) to save money. Don't expect a shiny chain store -- this place is very earthy. Many unique items, lots of by-the-ounce herbs and teas. In the same parking lot is a very nice, tiny local grocery store with many natural items. Their bottled vitamins can be full list price, which is too bad. read more

I LOVE the Herb Room! All you have to do to appreciate this place is go an hour away in any direction and try to find some herbs, or supplements or other "alternative medicine" in most other locations. I once tried in Grass Valley area to get some herbs for a sick friend, and all I could find was an EXTREMELY limited selection at the Health food store, and the other choice was a kind of tourist place that sold some sage in packages and a few other very popular herbs that looked like they had gone way past their "shelf life." But this isn't doing the place justice, by only saying what other places DON'T have. Let me talk about what they do have... I have found the people working there very helpful, willing to share helpful hints and also let me know when they don't know about a particular item (just as important!) There is a major selection of Chinese Herbs, and Western Herbs, that you can buy in bulk. Wow! Nice choice of supplements, and often having a sale on one of their major labels. And they have great hours too, open til 10PM. So grateful for the Herb Room! read more

New to the area, just discovered this store and I love it! I found every herb that I needed. BUT I have a suggestion to the male clerk working on 11/09-Friday around 4:20ish, when you obtain a job dealing with customers it is best if you greet them with a smile and maybe a hello. I was greeted by you with a roll of the eyes-and you muttered, "shit". I drove 24 miles to your store to buy herbs that I use as medicine for myself-I was stoked that you guys carried what I needed but was upset on how rude you were. I was happy that te female clerk who took over after you stormed out was excellent and gave is proper customer service that will bring us back to this store. read more

If you ask a question or ask where a product is the dirty looks and attitude directed towards you is ridiculous. I find that they have the most extensive and inexpensive bulk selection of western and Chinese herbs anywhere in the bay area. I was able to find bulk Linden tea (known as Tilleul in France, and an excellent relaxant and sleep inducer), which is a rarity in the US. Friendly and laid back staff. I am always able to find parking in their relatively small parking lot. One of my favorite places to shop. read more

I'm going to give this place five stars because it is the best that I have seen for what kind of store it is. I am a lover of mud masks, aroma therapy, day spas and witchcraft. This store carried so many of the supplies that I need and love. There were so many beautiful colored vials and bottles from large to small. They were inexpensive too. I was able to get a large amount of pure almond oil, avacado oil and other types of oils to use for massages, aroma therapy oils and witchcraft oils. Sure not all the herbs are fresh because that would be impossible year round. The herbs are much cheaper to buy here and they even sell the little geleton caspules (vegan) So I make my own vitamins rather than paying full price for a bottle in a health food store.. This cost a tenth of the price. I love that they sell dr bronners lavender liquid soap in bulk here! Just a squirt and my whole house smells of it. The peppermint dr bronners liquid soap is sooo great for those hot days because it really cools you off. You can bring your own bottles and its cheaper that way... (and it makes your home prettier when you use your favorite bottles from home anyway.) I love this store. read more
