This place is SO awesome, definitely worth at least stopping by and checking out. My partner and I were looking for a spot for him to grab a bite to eat on our way to our cabin. Just happened yo stumble upon The Gas Station and decided to check it out. If you love horror films, you'll dig this place. They have so many cool things inside. Tons of rad horror toys and posters and just stuff! I had so much fun just checking everything out. We were quick to find out that it was also one of the filming locations of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The gentleman at the counter was so enthusiastic and informative! It was awesome hearing him geek out over stuff with my boyfriend. After we geeked out over everything, we ordered a brisket plate with a side of coleslaw and beans. Food came out pretty fast. They don't have a dining area inside, but out back they have some picnic tables. He dug into his plate on site. Everything was pretty darn good, especially for a place called 'The Gas Station' hah. Came on a Sunday afternoon with some friends after going to the state park. This was recommended by someone since it was the location that Texas chainsaw massacre was filmed lol) when you go inside to order it feels like you're in a Halloween store if you're into that. You would never think this place sells decent barbecue. Honestly not half bad. They had just finished roasting chicken when we got there and the breast I was given was massive!!! I couldn't finish all of it lol. I also had the brisket which was super yummy! They have two bbq sauces- a regular and a ghost pepper one. I only tried the regular but my friends like the ghost pepper one. The sides were ok... I would opt for potato salad. Chili was meh. Overall not a bad experience. We stopped here because they filmed Chainsaw Massacre here. The BBQ plate was okay but not worth the price we paid. It was nice seeing it but it's a tourist trap really not worth visiting since Hollywood told them to remove the vehicle that was parked outside and used in the film and to prohibited the sales of merchandise. read more

And while it is loaded with stuff from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you can find goodies from other movies in the genre as well. Grab a cold beer from the fridge, order your bbq at the counter and make your way outside. There is a large covered outdoor seating area with plenty of places for photo ops to commemorate the stop. And cars, lots of outside cats just hanging around. They have several cabins on the ground as well, I need to look into renting for a longer excursion with friends. Fun place to visit if you were into the movie. Friends we were traveling with had to go here. I'm glad I tagged along after listening to the story. I have never had the desire to watch the movie but I enjoy going to places that were featured in a movie. I didn't eat there but snooped around the property. It's a fun place to come to, though a bit of a novelty. The BBQ sandwich is good. The beer is cold. But it's not what you normally think of as a restaurant. It's more of a recreation of a scene from a movie. But that's pretty cool. It was a bit of a drive for us, but we're enjoyed ourselves. We sat in the back in a large covered porch area at a picnic table. The gentleman who served us was in the spirit of the whole thing, which really helped. He was fun. It's a tribute to the Texas Chain Saw Massacre movies and has a real connection to the franchise. There's memorabilia and a macabre ambiance. I'm pretty sure the BBQ sandwich is just beef though. On our way home from my "birthday weekend road trip" we had to stop by The Gas Station. I was kind of bummed to see how the outside looked - nothing like a few months ago - but after walking inside and talking with the super cool gal working behind the counter - she told us the unfortunate story of what's been going on with the company who owns the rights of the movie VS the vendors/cast that sell the merch of the movie. It sad and it sucks! (Not cool Mr. Company!) But - it's all good. Just "being" there at the gas station was cool enough for me and my 7yo. (he's a fan of the movie too) We bought a few horror goodies; Halloween II Michael Myers (for my 7yo) and I picked up a Jason Voorhees Christmas ornament and Judith Myers tombstone Christmas ornament. We got some BBQ for the road (and bottle of Coke for me) and headed back to Houston. The staff was super nice and helpful, and the place is super cool. Renting one of their cabins is now on my bucket list. If you're in the area - check it out and show a little love. It's not cool what's happening to them with all the rights stuff. read more

Loved it! If you're not familiar, this is the gas station from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I haven't seen the movie in many years but I still really enjoyed this quick stop while in Bastrop. They serve BBQ, sell a lot of horror memorabilia, and offer cabins for overnight stays. We didn't stay the night but we sampled their BBQ. It was honestly way better than I thought it'd be. The brisket wasn't the best you'll find in TX or anything (stiff competition) but it was pretty good. Had a nice fatty sliver running across the side. Beans and potato salad were solid as well. Their horror memorabilia collection is truly impressive. Lots of action figures from lots of horror movies. They also have some life-size dolls for sale (giant Pennywise, anyone?) Overall, this is a great stop for fans of the movie, fans of cinema history, fans of quirky and odd attractions, etc. read more

Came here for the first time with my family. We unfortunately did not order any bbq because we had just eaten. The outside of this store and the 2 vehicles from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie were awesome to look at and take photos of. They have a bench outside the store that pays tribute to the characters from the movie. In the store are tons of cool toys and figures from classic horror characters and my favorite ninja turtles. They also sell clothes, Halloween masks, and many other cool items. The staff are friendly. This is where you would order your bbq and get your order where you can walk around to the backside where there are a few picnic tables to hangout at. This barbecue joint is located 5 miles down SH304 assuming you're coming from Austin on Highway 71. Despite its name, there is no gas station here so don't plan on filling up except on bbq. Once inside, you'll be surrounded by Texas chainsaw massacre memorabilia, masks, action figures and merchandise. This place is rustic at best and if you plan on eating here, it's strictly covered outdoor picnic tables here. Basically you order at the counter inside and then you are directed to the back where they also have some small cabins to rent ($79 per night M-Th, $129 F-S). Paying by credit card will subject you to a tip screen starting at 15%. They also have cans of soda and plenty of domestic beer offerings, but nothing in the way of craft beer or wine. Brisket and sausage are the only two meats they serve here and the brisket does have a good solid smoke ring on it. We were surprised that a two meat plate with 2 sides was less than $15. The brisket was so moist and perfectly smoked that I got a pound to go. You can use one or two of their barbecue sauces which are also very good. The jalapeño sausage wasn't very spicy and their sides are pretty average, but all in all, glad we made the pilgrimage. read more

The Gas station is a little ways off the beaten path from town. But it is not far. It's not a traditional restaurant. They don't have any indoor seating. The place is more of a horror toy store with a kitchen in the back. It's not the best BBQ. It's passable. The sauce is pretty bland and the sides are nothing to write home about. On a Texas BBQ scale they are about a 5. The people were nice and the service was good. If you love Chucky and Halloween movies that place is great. Gas Station off the beaten path, however well worth the drive. Yes, once a movie scene, there are a number of curious folks who were stopping in. You walk into a gas station which has been converted to a sort of shop. The shop sells a lot of horror memorabilia from various movies, a lot of interesting items. The sales woman want to say her name was Patty. Anyway Patty was very friendly & took the time to explain their food items. Patty literally described all the food to us, which helped us decide what to order. Remind you we had just had our dinner of burgers & fries. The brisket here, I cannot stress how juicy, tasty & tender. The spicy sausage was amazing, different kind of spice never the less very good. The potato salad, smooth, & not overly spiced, left you wanting more. The beans were pretty smooth & tasty. No regrets here, definitely try to return back. Hard to find establishments with good food. My Husband and I decided to stop here on our way back from Austin. This is the original gas station from the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. There are a few props from the movie, along with a dedication memorial to the actors and actresses who passed. & Also note... This is not a real gas station. The inside of the store is filled with all kinds of horror merchandise that you can purchase. We went around lunch time on a Sunday afternoon, and it was quite busy. Everyone was standing in line for their famous BBQ! The brisket plate was absolutely amazing. It came with two sides, which I picked the potato salad and beans. The brisket was so tender and moist! Perfectly seasoned and perfectly smoked! Probably the best brisket I've had in a long time! We didn't dine out back because it was so HOT, but there are a bunch of tables to sit at in a covered area behind the store. There are also cabins that you can rent, if you are brave enough to spend the night. Overall, we had a pleasant experience! Our tummies were totally satisfied. Visited July 22nd 2024 The location was closed when my wife and I drived by, but we stopped in anyway because 'Texas Chainsaw Massacare' is an iconic movie and I fuckin love movies. I can't say anything to the food or the service, but it had the van, the truck, some seating with imagery and signatures and this crazy HUGE dead spider just hanging out right by the opening. What made it even better is that the weather was super stormy and literally no one was around, so it vibes were very spooky. read more

The reason for 3 Stars at the Gas Station is that it just wasn't my type of restaurant. Not only was it cafeteria style but you had to run all over the place to get everything you needed and you had to go to several stations which ended up needing several trip once you decided on a table. The only service was the gals dishing up the food--on paper plates, and I hate eating off of paper products except when eating fast food. The food was okay. Barbecue has to be really good to stand out. We had the Sausage and Brisket plate with two sides. My favorite sides with barbecue are backed beans and potato salad; theirs were average. To preface I have never saw the movie associated with this location... While driving to Houston from Austin my friend swore we had to stop here... ...with low expectations I walked in. And did not even realize it was a restaurant. It's loaded with posters, toys, and everything horror you could imagine... After walking around a bit I saw the menu. Ordered a brisket sandwich and a side of sausages... Ultra friendly service from the owners and the place is spotless! The sandwich was fantastic. Though it needed sauce, this sandwich set the bar for a lot of other places that ultimately fell short. This is a must stop for anyone remotely in the area! What an interesting place! I found myself in Bastrop yesterday wanting some BBQ, and this place came up in my search. Glad I stopped in! When you walk thru the door you are greeted by life sized models of Jason Voorhies, Freddie Krueger & Scream. You've stepped into an extensive horror movie memorabilia shop that also sells tasty BBQ & rents cabins. On top of all that, It's one of the major filming locations for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! Whoa! The dude at the counter takes you order, and directs you out to the covered eating area to wait for your food. After less that a five min wait, I was on my way. The brisket had a nice smoke ring & flavor, but I knocked off a star because it didn't have the crust on it that I like. Been coming here for years! The Brisket is some of the best that I have ever had. Can give some of the places in Lockhart a run for their money. The XX BBQ sauce is so good and has a welcoming kick at the end! They need to bottle that liquid gold. We always ask for an extra cup to take home. There is no indoor eating area but have a nice pavilion in the back. If you're a horror film fan, that this will be extra special for you! This place needs to be on everyone list for a road trip. Perfect for a chainsaw massacre movie night if you're staying in the onsite cabins. They have a ton of movies to rent, not just TCM. The cabins got pretty cold at night (we went in the Fall), but had space heaters that did a good job in keeping us comfy. Went to this joint for the first time to go to the "Jeeper's Creepers" signing. I have to say that I have never seen a group of people that seemed to bend over backwards to make sure that everyone in the VERY HOT line outside was as okay and staying shaded and hydrated. When you finally did get to see "The Creeper" the staff did not rush you out the door, and let you spend your well-earned time in the little air-conditioned store to get your memorabilia signed and pictures taken. The really did seem to want EVERYONE get to as much as they could out of the experience, even if it meant that everyone had to wait just a little longer. Even though it was very hot outside and the lines were very long no one seemed to be in a bad mood and the environment was very harmonious. That says a lot for the staff that worked there. Gotta say. I initially was just trying to get a late BBQ lunch on my way home from New Orleans, and this spot was well reviewed and on a stretch of road I wanted to explore. I had no idea I was going to be walking into a piece of cinematic history and Texas lore. Wow! The BBQ was fantastic and the portions were very generous. Our hosts were good natured and didn't try to make chili out of us! The cold beer was the perfect accoutrement. The place also is set up to host overnight events. Roy the owner has built several small cabins and has a fire pit and shows horror films drive in style on the weekends. Inside the station are a lot of horror film novelties. We stopped by driving back to Houston from Austin as I had heard about and the girls are always up for a new road side attraction on our road trips. The night we stopped in the actress from the Exorcist was hanging out signing books and posters. Oh yeah, the brisket and sausage were good. A little creepy that in the film it was made with victims. If you like horror, they have quite the array of collectibles. Good ones, too. The staff were quite genial. They were helpful too. Then there's the BBQ. It's a drive out there, and it came to lunchtime for us. What a splendid surprise! Their brisket lunch was tender and delicious. Drinks were canned, and good. Beer is available in can or bottle. I've been riding my Harley from Houston to Bastrop to visit The Gas Station every few months for a few years now. If you don't know what it is, it is a filming location from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie that has been converted into a horror themed gift shop and barbecue joint. The movie memorabilia is pretty cool and they have awesome t-shirts. Also the staff are always friendly. The real draw for me, however, is the barbecue. The greatest complement I can give them is the fact that I frequently am willing to ride 130 miles for their awesome sliced beef sandwich. Their sides are great as well but the sandwich is so big I can really eat them. The Gas Station is an amazing place to visit for fans of horror movies and barbecue alike.
