I like it. It has some fun offerings, from free light shows in the fall and winter to several entertainment businesses, shops, and restaurants there is a lot to entertain. I have even enjoyed walking around at night. There is seating on both the lower and upper level on the astroturf and Edison lights hanging across the upper level. It has a beautiful atmosphere. Some specific stores that I'm aware of existing in that location. Our Wise guys, Museum of illusion, The planetarium, and some restaurants. Parking is paid like several areas in salt lake City. I was at the Gateway for a flea market event a few days ago. To my disappointment, disgust and confusion, the screen above the fountains was playing a looped video that featured primarily AI-Generated images and videos. The clips were honestly pretty unnerving. I kept wondering why they wouldn't just use real footage of real people, like it has been for my entire life up to this point. There was also shots of mountains, a robot, all very janky and weird and cheap-looking. I also found it strange and frustrating that Gateway management would choose to not simply hire a videographer, or artists, or even just pay for stock footage. The reputation of GenAI is on a steep downward decline, consumers are getting tired of it being pushed down their throats. On top of that, the wasteful and disastrous environmental consequences of the data centers that are necessary to generate these cheap and disturbing images have been linked to accelerated climate change. That's an issue that's literally close to home for SLC residents, as every week there's a new study on the toxic particles being emitted by the rapidly drying Great Salt Lake and the sickness it's already causing to people who live nearby. Why would the Gateway broadcast itself as culpable in this existential threat to residents' health and lives? The Gateway is also a hub for artists of all kinds. Why wouldn't you capitalize on their skills to show off the best parts of the community? It's insulting to the artist and to the consumer. It signals that you think we're dumb. It comes off as lazy, cheap, thoughtless, and at worst, actively cruel. It made me seriously second-guess coming back to the Gateway until the video is changed. I would recommend anyone who isn't familiar with the many downsides of GenAI use, both environmental, psychological, as well as economic, to read up about this dangerous tech that corporate investors are flooding the market with. It's dangerous, greedy, and only alienates your desired demographics. I urge you to replace the video with literally anything that isn't GenAI, for your benefit and for the benefit of SLC residents who don't want to get a lung cancer diagnosis in the next decade. Until then, you'll continue to get complaints from many like me about this careless decision. read more

I love coming to the gateway during summer. Its a really relaxing place to spend an afternoon or evening. There is plenty of outdoor seating, wall art, music playing, and both free and paid things to fix. However, it kinda feels like it's dying. And it's felt this way ever since I came here the first time years ago. There are SO many empty stores, and it seems businesses are shutting down all the time, and not always getting replaced. There are a few companies that seem to be mainstays out there like Dave and busters, hall pass, the comedy club, and the movie theaters. But everything else in in flux. I can't help but feel this could rival city creek mall if it's store fronts were full of recognizable names and things weren't shutting down so often. There is some construction going on, so maybe it's on the up and up? read more

What a goddam* mess to park. In someone's ultimate wisdom to throw services back to the guests, they installed a text based parking system. Trouble is, no service in the garage. But wait, they provide free WiFi. Actually that doesn't work either. We were into this process about 20 minutes while other guests kept coming up asking us if we knew how to do this or help them. Maybe 20 people total. We finally said fuc@ it and headed to Wiseguys who said they get complaints all night and Gateway won't deal with it. Here's my solution: raze this waste of concrete and sell it to someone who can create an enjoyable experience. We are DONE visiting here and you should be too. Damn them for not listening to their tenants. read more

Shame I had to miss the game and had to take my 80 old mother home because you charged too much for parking for the game(12-15-2025) and I am on a fixed income and my mother couldn't walk to far and we will never visit the gateway again not everyone is rich and this is one reason people don't go downtown thx for not letting my mother see her first basketball game go back to hourly not a set price or you will not keep customers. read more

Although I'm sad most of the businesses that used to be here have gone, since we first moved here 12 years ago have left, but there are some still standing like Megaplex, as well as restaurants like Dave & Busters. It's kind of weird have Recursion (pharmaceutical company) taking up most of the real estate there. I do like how they now host various activities and events like festivals and All Star weekend. I have gone to see my friends play Taiko there, and have yet to go to the New Year's event and do Goat Yoga. I saw some signs for "coming soon" and I'm hoping more shopping stores come about. But I do like all the activities that are hosted there these days. read more

Yet again, I discovered this place by accident while in SLC...thanks to my quest to buy some fatty Mochi Donuts at MOMI, one of its many stores. Well, first of all, this place is HUGE. It sprawls out in all directions, and it was hard to tell where it started and stopped. However, it was mostly empty...or dead. Initially, I thought it was a new complex, just settling in...but after reading some of the reviews here, I now know this place is a dying Giant. Not sure if the pandemic had anything to do with it waning in recent years, but it's kinda sad. I can tell this place used to be IT. Anyway, I enjoyed at least 2 of its attractions here...MOMI the donut shop, and Dreamscapes, a funky, little recycled museum. I also tried to enjoy some foods at Hall Pass, which had a very cool vibe...but I lucked out of its limited lunch hours. BOO! One thing that was frustrating was its lack of parking spaces. Maybe I was just clueless, but the only one where I can park for more than 1 hour for free was the metered parking garage, which was a bit of a walk. Hopefully this place will regain momentum? Honestly, I was beginning to get jealous of this place when I first discovered it. My hometown city, Charlotte, has many nice shopping/dining destinations...but I don't think any of them are as lofty and ambitious. My pictures don't do justice to just how big and sprawling this place is! Again, very sad that this place isn't hopping as it should be. read more

Sweet and easy spot to take in 4th of July fireworks. Two stages of live music playing, but nothing was too loud. The lines are incredibly long for alcohol and food, so it might be best to bring your own food and provisions. We arrived at 8pm for the 10pm fireworks and still found a nice place to park ourselves before the fireworks show. We were a group of 8 with four children to care for - the bathroom lines were pretty manageable and the bathrooms were clean. There's a fountain in the middle of the plaza that many kids were playing in - if you decide to allow your kids to play in it, they will get absolutely soaked so bring extra clothes. We visited the candy store next to the open plaza and the wait time to check out was about 35 minutes. Definitely bring your own treats! It took about 30 minutes to get out of the parking garage, so make sure everyone goes potty before you head out. read more

I haven't been here in a while, as of today I could see the many changes that have been made since I was here last. Lots of new stores, and places to eat. We made a special trip to come here for a birthday celebration at Sweet Rolled Taco's. After we celebrated, we walked around a bit, and noticed that most stores were closed. I'm sure this is due to Covid-19. It is still a beautiful outdoor mall, and have done a pretty good job keeping it clean. Most people weren't wearing a mask outside, and really didn't keep their distance when lounging around the many places to sit and people watch. Parking garage is available underneath, and most places will validate with purchase. Traxx is close by as well if you don't want to mess with downtown parking. I didn't see any panhandlers within the mall, However, when leaving the parking garage there were blocks, and blocks of homeless people. Tent city is what I called it. This is on the West side of the mall along the median strip of grass. Was shocked to see so many. I'm not sure it's the Gateway Mall's responsibility to make the tent city move away from the mall, but it could discourage some people from shopping there, especially if they enter from the West. read more

The Gateway was the original luxury outdoor mall downtown. It has a vast selection of stores and restaurants and has started to delve more into art with interesting designs on ceilings and stairs. They are competing with City Creek, and are going for a more "artsy" vibe than high class. There are playground areas for both children and adults. Fire pits can be found lit up in the winter and cool water fountains in the summer. They do a nice job keeping the place attractive year round. There is plenty of parking in the parking garage, and many of the stores will validate parking when you shop there. Better yet, visit on a Sunday when parking is free and crowds are smaller. The only complaint is that the mall is located in a rough part of downtown. The plan originally was to rejuvenate the street by putting in the nice mall. But I'm not sure how well that has succeeded. read more

Literally maybe 10 stores open! There's a food hall that looks pretty solid, can't go wrong with SkinnyFats. Other than that, this is a barren, sad and empty mall. You know for a dead shopping center ( let's be real city Creek won the mall war) taking the bathrooms away seems like management really wants the small to die. There are a lot of stores here that you can ONLY find at the Gateway, as well as a lot of really cool art placed throughout. I don't get to come very often, but I enjoy when I am able to! There are places to eat, places to explore, and so many photo opportunities! When I mention The Gateway to people, a lot of them are surprised or ask if anything is still there.. of course there is! We walked through to go to the vivint arena, did some browsing. It's a cool strip mall type thing. Plenty of parking, unless validated, it can get expensive. There are some cool light features right now, they have some nice warming like fire pedestals. We walked past a surprising number of seating areas. I know one of the escalators didn't work. The others worked just fine. Plenty of food and snack options. The stores range in specialities like shoes, to like boutiques that have decent clothing options, and there are little exhibits. We went at night and it was kind of fun to walk through, I bet on the summer would be better because the weather is nicer! I'd like to go back and explore more for sure! I'd recommend paying a visit if someone wants to do a little exploring or shopping! read more

This upscale outdoor shopping mall is tucked away off of some main streets. Happened to stumble onto an Italian Fest going on which was pretty big and had live music on a stage as well as several authentic Italian food booths. Not really my type of place but it was cool to experience it. read more

So much potential for this place but it seems like many of the shops are closed or being remodeled. Tons of fun places to do photo ops. They have a nice splash pad for kids with places for parents to hang out. There are also scheduled events. On the other side there are restaurants, a kids museum, and a few other stores. There is a parking garage and you can get parking validated, but you have to pay for the discounted rate still. I found this place on yelp. There's a ton of parking all over. There is a lot of art all over it was absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth having lunch and taking pictures. There's a lot of restaurants here so whatever mood you're in you can find something. There's also a swing set that was so fun. If you're in Salt Lake City you definitely have to stop here. read more

We love the gateway mall! We came to eat at Tuscano's, which we loved. The security officers are worthless. My car was broken into a year ago when we were here and they were awful. No help as all. I attended the winter farmers market today with my service animal (not an emotional support animal, an actual service animal) and would not recommend it. The woman working the market as a whole did not know ADA protocols. She asked improper questions and treated me with mistrust and judgement. This place makes me sad. We used to love coming here and it was the place to be. It was always so busy. Now everyone goes to City Creek (as do I, I love that place as well). it's sad this isn't the successful shopping place it used to be. I really loved the outdoor mall feel of the Gateway. The only thing I really disliked was the food court area. But none of that matters now. It's so vacant, it's very sad. I know they have some ideas to change it, and I hope they work. It's a nice place. We still love Discovery Gateway, Clark Planetarium, and the waterpad area; but there are so many stores that have left. It's just not the same. I do love the giant screen on one of the buildings, that's pretty cool. We went to the chalk Art festival there today and it was pretty sad how few artists and booths there were. One the one hand: It's an outdoor mall, so you spend some time breathing fresh air, there are flowers to enjoy, and the setup is pretty unique for this area. On the other hand: Sub-zero temps in winter. Icy sidewalks. On the one hand: There are lots of shops, some of which are unique to Gateway. There's a theater. Restaurants. All right there. On the other hand: Ch-ch-chain. I ain't chain hating here, but if you are after funky unique stuff, just choose another shopping area. On the one hand: It's downtown. And I like being downtown. There's lots of other stuff around if you want to hit up Gateway but then pop out for a different place to eat or shop. On the other hand: Parking. Either pay, or be in shape. On the one hand: Hey, it's a fun place to go, watch people, do some shopping, grab something to eat. It's revitalized the area, it's one-stop shopping for everything ki-yooot from clothes to home decor to hats to shoes. On the other hand: It's a mall. One of the highlights of downtown, The Gateway is a wonderful outdoor shopping mall equipped with many restaurants, clothing stores, and a movie theater. There are many parking garages so you can easily find a place to park your car or you can take Trax down to save some gas and avoid the hassle of the busy streets of downtown. In the summertime, the outdoor fountain is nice to run though while water jets shoot up from the ground leaving you soaked and cooled from the summer sun. During the winter, it is nice to walk around in your warm attire while admiring the lighted trees and visiting a fire pit to lightly toast yourself. To me, The Gateway has always been fascinating: An upscale mall right across the street homeless shelters. So grandiose, with water fountains and elevators and neon signs and froufrou boutiques and an epic movie theater and above-the-street skybridge. When I moved here a decade ago, it was my go-to place for movies, great food, Apple products, books, cool kitchen gear, and just about anything else. They were too big to fail. And then the City Creek came along, took the Apple Store, brought in valet parking and a Cheesecake Factory, and nary a vacant building can be found. Now there's very little hustle and bustle at The Gateway, and the echo of music is bouncing off the walls and sidewalks like some kind of economic Chernobyl left a creepy ghost town. First went Biaggi's, the great corner Italian restaurant. Then went Thaifoon, the fusion joint with almost every Asian food you could want. And then what was to me the greatest culinary tragedy, Z'Tejas, the Southwest-Mex mecca with the best catfish tacos, queso, and cornbread in a 250-mile radius, left town after 13 years. The crowds weren't coming anymore. The Z-Tejas still remains vacant; the Biaggi's is now a Wiseguys Comedy Club. There are still a handful of good stores, a great movie theater, an always jam-packed GameStop, the Discovery Museum, The Depot, The Grand Hall, and events like Food Trucks at The Fountain, The Urban Flea Market, and Illuminate (the light art and technology festival). There also is a $100 million investment in the future: Dave and Busters is coming soon, a lot of vacant buildings are getting reconstructed, and an ice rink is coming. I saw a lot of new signage and construction, so the future looks bright. One problem: Parking. Even on a weekday, it's hard to find. As well, I find it utterly ludicrous that in their current state they are charging for parking. It's hard enough to find parking and negotiating the Trax line that makes it for the worst U-Turn nightmare in town. Typical outdoor located in downtown SLC the outdoor mall is well maintained and clean. This one had all the big box name brand stores but also had mixed usage residential attached. I was irritated by several homeless begging for money but overall a good place to shop or dine with plenty of choices. read more

I've always loved this mall, it's so atmospheric in every season. I'm sorry to see it's popularity dwindle with the next new thing. There used to be great stores here, but I'm pretty excited for the future of this place, there seem to be a lot more interactive events and activities, as well as arts happening here. There are so many large public spaces to hold events public and private, a cool fountain, great garage parking, benches and seating outside with fireplaces, and sheltered outdoor streets and sidewalks. Decently designed with hardly any tenants. The only thing keeping this place alive may be the Megaplex Theatres. While walking around I asked a security guard why this mall was pretty much empty and the response was "the homeless shelter is right across the street and they tend to cause problems". Whose bright idea was it to have a homeless shelter so close to The Gateway? It doesn't matter which was here first, but that just seems like a bad idea. Had I not wanted to see a movie I wouldn't have come down to this area (staying in the City Center area). The City needs to invest some money in this area or adjust their master plan. read more
