Unkind, inflexible, and misleading--Mother's Day ruined by this horrible place. I had to cancel a planned Mother's Day celebration at Hotel Genevieve just a few hours past their cancellation window due to my 94-year-old grandmother's illness. While every other vendor we were working with--including an incredible, high-end photo shoot--extended gracious compassion and allowed us to cancel or reschedule, Hotel Genevieve showed none. They refused to refund me or even allow me to apply the credit to a future stay. Then, they sent me on a wild goose chase, incorrectly telling me that the cancellation could be handled through my third-party vendor (American Express), which was completely false. I spent hours trying to resolve something that should have been handled with a simple gesture of empathy--hours taken away from my children and my ailing grandmother. The fact that this happened on Mother's Day, when I couldn't even celebrate myself, made it all the more heartbreaking. Being a mother is hard enough in this world--being treated with such coldness, rigidity, and complete indifference was unacceptable. There are so many beautiful, guest-centered places to stay in Los Olivos and the surrounding area. This is not one of them. During wildfire evacuations, The Alisal welcomed us with warmth, gave us a generous rate, and made us feel safe and seen. That's what true hospitality looks like. Hotel Genevieve falls far short. I will never return, and I encourage others to spend their time and money where they'll be treated with care and respect. read more

My experience was horrible -- my daughter tore her ACL last night 2 days before we were to check in. She is unable to walk but this group would not wave the cancellation fee even though I said we would rebook. Furthermore, they offered that if I paid in full, they would give me credit but only for a mid-week stay when I have paid a weekend rate and can't go during the work week. I would pay in full as long as they would honor my weekend stay, but they wouldn't budge. No grace whatsoever. I am sure it's a great place -- that is why we selected it. But being a great place and having a good business culture obviously don't go hand in hand. Beware before you book because there are no exceptions even in the case of an accident. You step back in time when you enter this seemingly hundred-plus year old small bed and breakfast. The decor is charmingly fin de siècle, boasting a parlor where a delicious made-to-order breakfast is served in the morning and in the evening wine and charcuterie are served; this room always has a cheery fire blazing. The rooms vary in size, but all have fireplaces and are very comfortable. We love the Couture King suite that boasted a huge room with comfortable seating, a whirlpool tub surrounding by windows with electronic shades and a heated floor. The bathroom was very large with two sinks, heated floors and a enormous steam shower. Everyone who works here is so nice. Esme the manager is very friendly and always has a smile. A noteworthy plus is the wine passport where you have two free tastings at at least ten wineries! read more

Had a wonderful midweek stay. Everything was nice including the steam shower and whirlpool tub (wow!). Staff was very friendly and helpful, very clean and well kept, as well as the food, coffee, teas, wines, and snacks were tasty. If you have the time I HIGHLY recommend getting a spa treatment. I got a 50 minute facial with Usha and it was exceptional. One of the best facials that I have ever had. read more

Stayed here on a Monday as it's quite pricey (between $500-$700) on the weekend. Had a nice room upstairs with a balcony (room 204) and a fireplace. Just under $400 total. Comes with breakfast and wine and cheese hour and a dessert hour which was more like coffee and a cookie hour but still better than nothing. Grounds are very nice and several fire pits and fireplaces to sit in front. Breakfast was good quality but half self serve half delivered. Food options were limited but it was part of the cost. We also had a card from several wine tastings if you are into that. Also part of the price of admission. An overall value during the week when under $400 but not so much when Uber that number. Rooms are a skosh dates and seem to favor the over 50 crowd tastes. Bathroom was large but the sink area was far too small for a huge space and the shower was showing considerable signs of wear. This is more like a 4.5 stars but the location is also excellent. The front desk could be a little more friendly and outgoing. read more

One of The most incredibly beautiful and immaculate hotels! As you walk in you transform into Victorian French Decor era that is absolutely magnificent! French music and chocolate candies are welcoming you with the nicest staff. The rooms are large, ours had a fireplace and a balcony, the beds are comfortable with the silky whitest sheets, fluffy towels, big bathroom, beautifully decorated. Spent some time at victors next door for drink then made our way over to Maverick bar where they had live music and good old country fun ! We had the best time. This review is for the spa only. My mother and I chose this spa for her 80th birthday based on the great reviews and the hotel's professional online pictures, which frankly oversold the experience. The "spa" itself was located downstairs and was so poorly marked that when we found the entrance, it was hard to tell we were even there. It turned out to be little more than a single room with four chairs, immediately dashing any expectation of a serene, premium retreat. While the massages were acceptable, they were certainly not spectacular enough to justify the ridiculous price. What truly felt like a bait-and-switch was the lack of amenities. For this cost, I expected a proper relaxation area, yet the jacuzzi wasn't in the spa area at all, and the dry sauna's availability was completely unclear. The added "champagne spot" was a disappointing waste of money, amounting to a five-second scent and a small bottle of bubbly at the end. We felt we paid a luxury price for a budget-level service, making the entire experience a significant disappointment in value and transparency. read more

My fiance and I traveled to Solvang for Labor Day weekend. My fiancé's family has been staying at this hotel for decades, back when it was still the Santa Ynez Inn. His grandparents were the first guests to ever book a room when the Inn opened, and his father was married in their beautiful courtyard 20 years ago. We wanted to book a stay, but I looked for reservations too late, so they were full due to the influx of holiday travelers. I am 6 months pregnant, and the hotel we did book was in Solvang, run down in comparison to Genevieve, and did not have a backup generator. The heatwave rolled in, and our hotels power went out. Even the Solvang cell phone towers were down. The dinner we purchased was spoiling and our tiny room in Solvang was heating up quickly with the AC and lights completely out. We left Solvang and drove to The Genevieve in Santa Ynez for refuge. The environment was immediately calming. Cody, who works at the desk was so incredibly helpful. Even as outsiders who were not guests, the customer service was unmatched. It truly made me realize THIS is the place we will ALWAYS book in advance any time we head to the area. Everything about Cody's conduct and the hotel atmosphere made me a customer for life. This is where we will take our babies and continue our family memories from now on. Thank you so much Cody for the ice water and the air conditioned place for this pregnant mama to perch while we waited out the Solvang power outage. Literally my favorite hotel I've ever stayed at. We have been staying here for years and it has never disappointed. The moment you walk through the charming doors, you are taken to a peaceful, relaxing and elegant place and time. The details are what always blow me away here. Each room is slightly different which is super fun. Each room we've stayed in has a beautiful tub and shower. Beds are big. Music is played through the hotel, even in the rooms. There's a volume knob so you can turn up or down/ off as you please. Free breakfast, wine hour with cheese and crackers, and dessert hour (although we didn't make it to that one). Price has gone up significantly in the past few years, but we are still happy to pay for the quality and beauty you get here. Charm, charm charm! Every inch of this place screams charm! The staff is top notch! From check in to the servers at the afternoon wine, to breakfast (amazing made to order breakfasts) they make you feel special. Our room was spacious as was the bathroom. The French music playing throughout, including your room (you can turn it down/off if it doesn't float your boat) is a delight. And Victor's restaurant, which is on property is outstanding. I came here for a mommy getaway and loved it. The only bad thing was the rooms to the doors slam loudly if not shut gently by the person coming and going. The room next to me decided to leave at 6am and spent 15min rudely coming and going to load their luggage. Slam, slam, slam! So much for my one and only chance to sleep in! Do not get married here if Pam and Kristopher are in charge of events. They are trying to hide my reviews on other websites (see screenshot), so I anticipate the same will be done here. Pam actively tried to ruin our wedding, caused me to miss so much work to fix all the promises they backslid on and argued with us the entire time. Our tent vendor, wedding coordinator and design vendor all apologized to us and said venues are rarely this difficult and said they would not work with this venue again. They told us we could use their parlor for an after party and then changed their mind (we had to pay for the bar next door instead). They went back on a rain plan that was previously approved, suggested we scramble to rent an incredibly expensive tent and then rejected the tent company's proposal so they could not set up. They approved us moving our ceremony to the Parlor due to rain, then tried to charge us more money closer to our event and said the ceremony could be standing room only. I had to email a video of a recent wedding where they allowed someone else to use chairs. Standing room only for 87 people in an inn where we were required to rent every single room. Insane. They also took down our twinkle lights and chiffon decor that bella vista designs was setting up, which had been previously approved and when asked about it Pam shirked any responsibility. The power went out while our guests were arriving and their backup generator was broken so there were no lights or ability for people to check in. There was a ladder to the attic open in the middle of the hallway while my guests were arriving (pictured below). Overall Pam's attitude in particular was awful, she argued the entire time, couldn't keep details straight and never took responsibility even when we told her she was ruining our wedding. Beautiful place to stay in Santa Ynez. We enjoyed everything here, and look forward to the next time we will be able to come to escape the city. Rooms felt comparable to the more expensive resorts that we have stayed. Everything was elegant, clean, and well done. Looked exactly like all the photos. Nice sized parking lot with a Tesla charger available. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful overall. We checked in early to utilize the wine pass that was included, and they called us once our room was ready which was a couple hours before the expected 3pm check in time. There was an issue when we did get our room keys that they gave us the keys to the wrong room, and when I came down to ask why they didn't work the girl said she was already making new ones (was a little confused when she told us to go upstairs is she knew she had provided the wrong keys) but other than this one issue we were pleased with the staff. Our room was a king deluxe, directly above the entrance and by the staircase but no issue at all with noise. Room was large and clean, had a balcony, fireplace, and large bathroom with tub and separate shower. Bed was a little soft but clean and comfortable. Price is higher than other places in the area, however I felt it was well worth the extra cost for what was provided. Keep in mind when you book that there is a $35 guest amenity fee on top off the written price of the room. Breakfast was delicious. Only wish that the speciality coffee drinks were included given the prices that are already being paid, however they are an extra $4. Regular coffee is available and included. Wine hour had some nice local wine choices and a mini cheese/meat plate. Dessert hour came with cookies. The cheese and cookies came on individually wrapped plates to be enjoyed wherever you preferred (parlor, outdoor fire pits, your own room/balcony) Regarding covid, they have hand sanitizer available and seem to be trying to keep some distance. They also have you sign a form on checkin. There's a sticker on the room saying it was cleaned. Overall felt as safe as can be expected when going to a shared space. read more

The Genevieve is an absolutely charming place to stay. It's looks like a 100 year old Victorian mansion yet was built only a few years ago. This means that it has a modern elevator, modern amenities, modern heating (and presumably modern AC) in a building that will charm your socks off. Upon arrival we were met by a young lady who was genuinely concerned if we had a good trip and made sure we knew about all the stuff the hotel has to offer. (By the way, in addition to all the hotel amenities, we were given a wine tasting passport to many local wineries. Don't forget, the Genevieve is in the middle of one of California's great wine regions.) We were also warmly greeted by Christopher the hotel manager. He doubled down on making sure we had a pleasant stay. Our room was wonderful. We had a balcony that overlooks the garden area and a fireplace which we used that night because of the chilly weather. The bathroom was enormous (we said the place had modern amenities), complete with a shower and separate whirlpool tub. The décor was super posh and very romantic. There were a few books on the mantel above the fireplace, one of which was a guest book for signature. It was full of romantic notes from former guests talking about their honeymoon or travels across the United States. The earlier guests were pretty happy with their experience too. We had dinner that night at the adjacent restaurant, The Victor. We had a fine steak dinner and had fun with the folks at the table next to us who had been wine tasting that day and were pretty cheery. That night we slept like the dead in a room that was perfectly silent. The next morning we had breakfast in the big sitting area. In addition to a cold Continental breakfast available on the sideboard, we were able to get a gourmet hot breakfast in kind of a B&B style - a choice of waffles or Eggs Florentine. Yummy. If you want to get away from it all, the Genevieve is the perfect place to do it. Highly recommended. read more

I experienced a horrific incident that transpired the general manager, Kristopher Salloway-McLaughlin at The Santa Ynez Inn. I cannot express the absolute shock that I am still reeling from today. My husband and I checked in to the hotel Monday, January 23, 2023. We've have stayed at this hotel approximately five to six times over the past couple of years. We love the area and it's not too far from Danville where we live, so it makes for a nice little getaway. While I was getting ready to go out for the day I found some Velcro rollers that I use in my hair were missing. I found it so strange as I'm a creature of habit, very methodical and organized. I used them on the prior morning in our hotel room and as usual I put them back in the travel pouch where I always keep them. It seemed extremely odd to me that I was missing 5-6 of these rollers. I thought maybe I miss placed them without thinking and searched everywhere in the room. I knew at that point they were taken, and my thoughts were, why in the world would someone take used rollers that were put on someone else's head. How disgusting?! And, how disturbing that someone would go in to a zipped pouch and take them. I discussed this with my husband as it felt I was violated, and in all our travels throughout the United States, and abroad this had never happened. My husband advised we needed to bring this up at the front desk as it was our duty to inform your hotel that there was an untrustworthy employee working in your hotel rooms. I went to the front desk at 1:15 PM met with Magee. I told her I had something to discuss with her that may seem insignificant, but it was a matter of doing the right thing. After I explained what happened, she told me she was so sorry, that she completely understood, and she would look into it right away. Magee asked what color they were, looked up on the internet for some similar so I could identify the look. I have no interest in getting them back, I just believe it is my duty to advise The Santa Ynez Inn that something is going on in your staff that you should be aware of. I then told Magee I didn't want anyone entering our room, and that I just needed towels for the evening, which she immediately got for me. Magee was very kind, compassionate and understanding. I returned to my room and within five minutes Kristopher Salloway-McLaughlin, the general manager called me in our room. He informed me Magee told him what happened and he could assure me that he knew for a fact that none of his staff would do such a thing. He went on to say how this kind of behavior has not happened in the past, and that this would not happen as he has the confidence and knowledge the staff was not capable of doing this. My jaw dropped as I could not believe what he just said, and the manner in which he spoke to me! I explained that it was the principal of the event, I don't want anything but to inform him that someone took something out of my room, and that it was very unnerving. He repeatedly went on a rant raising his voice, telling me he knows each and every employee and that, that couldn't possibly happen. I asked him if he thought I would fabricate that someone would take something so insignificant out of by zippered pouch? He then went on to tell me that you have guests that have Louis Vuitton luggage, and that they have never had anything taken, and that he knew nothing could have been taken from my room. (and he knows this after working as your manager after eleven months...how naïve!) I was and am in complete shock in how someone the hotel business had the audacity to talk to a guest this way! I don't know what he is personally going through, but this attitude is unacceptable, particularly in a management position. I have never been spoken to in such a vile way. He told me he needed a photo of the pouch, which I promptly took and headed to the front desk to provide. Magee was there and as soon as I started to talk to her, Kristopher Salloway-McLaughlin came out of the back and continued his tirade attempting to belittle me at which point I advised him I would be contacting the owner as well as a review on YELP. I have never encountered such an appalling, despicable, unprofessional human being. I did what was the right, moral thing to do. There was absolutely no gain for me. On a side note...I had packed in my bags several Gucci & Ferragamo scarves & belts, RL cashmere sweaters, Stuart Weizmann shoes, AG Jeans, etc., so tell me why I would this establishment of some rollers worth maybe 8-10 dollars? After feeling assaulted by Kristopher Salloway-McLaughlin, my husband and I felt we couldn't stay at your establishment another day and checked out a day early. ********I have contacted the owner, and have received absolutely no response. I purchased a bottle of wine from the front desk while they were offering wine tastings. That was the only purchase I made. Several other charges showed up on my credit card. When I called to inquire what the charges were, the reply I got was "they were tips for our staff". They tipped themselves $30 because I bought a bottle wine. I didn't leave the tip. First time visiting the Santa Ynez Valley and so happy my husband and I took a chance on The Genevieve. This bed and breakfast plus scale establishment exceeded our expectations. Made to order breakfast, evening wine, cheese, and dessert reception was icing on the cake of this aesthetically pleasing hotel. Hello.... January 3,2020 we held our Wedding at the Inn... Including ourselves we had a party of about 50... The staff was AWESOME to work with from start to finish... We provided the COMPLETE EXPERIENCE for our guest.. We started with hot app's and FULL bar in the Inn's Parlor. We then excused our party outside as we had the Ceremony in front of the fireplace.. We then continued out at the Coach House where we picked up where we left off in the Parlor with hot app's and FULL bar for our guest.. Dinner was seated and served in the dining area of the Coach House... The location... ambience...food...and drink was everything we could imagine... Fridge almost tipping out of its enclosure,, not all windows opening,, Flimsy toilet seats, cheapest toilet paper you can get etc. Only thing very nice is the jacuzzi tub. Breakfast is ok but very rudimentary- no plain yoghurt,only vanilla( what to do if you just like a plain yogurt for a Lite breakfast but you don't like vanilla?) Watery capsule espresso. The property is so beautiful like being at the Dragonfly Inn from Stars Hallow. it's well kept with modern amenities. The location can't be beat given that it's within 200 feet of the restaurants in the area. The room was spacious with a nice outdoor patio and a faux fireplace which I used throughout our stay. They have the option to play the lobby music in your room which created a nice festive ambiance. The bed was comfortable but not for um activities. the breakfast was pretty decent for the area but weak coffee. I'd give it 4.5 since there was no fan in the bathroom which can ruin the vibe to hear someone go. The staff was fine not rude but incredibly friendly. We didn't even know they served eggs until the second day since no one told us nor is there a menu left out for guests to review. I only found out because I saw someone else order them. The place is about 10 years old but designed from the outside and lobby to look like something from an earlier time period. Our room was spectacular and also done in that 100 year old mode. The bathroom, however, was super modern. The afternoon wine tasting was great and the food could have been a meal in itself. The evening desserts were decent. breakfast was excellent. On a road trip that brought us from San Diego up to Carmel for a wedding, we were excited to take our time and visit a number of our favorite places along the way. While making our way from our first stop in Ventura to our favorite wine tasting town of Los Olivos, my husband and I couldn't wait to make it back to the Santa Ynez Inn. This is our second time staying here and I am excited to update this review to say that even within a years time, SYI is still amongst the best bed and breakfast in town. Stayed for two nights to celebrate our anniversary in a deluxe king room on the second floor with a balcony. The overall inn has a beautiful Victorian charm and the front desk staff were always very welcoming. Pros: - Morning breakfast, evening cheese and wine hour (5:30-6:30) and dessert hour (at 8pm) were all nice touches. - Wine passport provided was nice, but needed some updating. Most wineries that were listed as open daily ended up being closed during our midweek stay. - Heated floors in the bathroom with a steam shower were amenities you don't find in hotels these days - so it was a nice surprise. - Tesla charging station was readily available. Cons: - The tub was a big seller for us. It was cold and raining through our stay, but there were always ants in it. Front desk did a turn down service and sprayed, but when we returned after dinner, more ants were there. - Whisky tasting in the library was an add on offered, but there were no "library specials" in stock and all other offerings were things you could get at a big box store. - Online was a photo of Couch House Bar but was told that was only for events. I enjoyed our overnight stay at Santa Ynez Inn. Did it meet my hyped up expectations after reading all the glowing reviews on yelp? I'm not sure about that... I wasn't disappointed, but I didn't think it was the best experience ever, either. Located in Santa Ynez, which is a really, really small quiet town consisting of couple blocks of shops, restaurants and a bank (Rabobank- who names a bank Rabobank? Might as well call it Rob-a-bank), you can have a nice early morning stroll in half hour around the neighborhood. What I liked: The evening wine hour: very nice, with a great assortment of cheeses and crackers. Breakfast: top-notch with a delicious eggs benedict and self-service fruits and pastries. Room size: Very spacious with a huge bathroom, even in the standard room. We weren't given a list of wineries with free tastings like some reviewers mentioned, and the front desk wasn't too welcoming, not even cracking a smile when we checked in. When I asked for a map of the area, they had no idea where the maps were and looked flustered until I grabbed a pamphlet they had and found a map myself. No one volunteered any info about local wineries, things to do, activities we can partake in... just felt really impersonal. I might have just had really high expectations, but my experience wasn't five-stars. Not sure if I'd come back, but it was a pleasant stay overall. read more

This place is too nice! It's very comfortable, very clean, and very well-appointed. If you're like me, you'll end up feeling like it's a bit too fancy to be taken seriously, but all in all it was quite enjoyable, and totally worth the cost. Staff is friendly. There are perks like wine hour, dessert hour, etc. Rooms have coffee maker and fridge (and everything else you can think of), but no microwave. Most rooms seem to have a nice patio, many facing a peaceful courtyard with a fountain. They even have a dedicated dial on the wall to control the volume of the big band music that plays around the clock. Our room was very quiet at night. However, keep in mind that while this place is fashioned like a pastoral manor, it is "in town" in Santa Ynez, and when you're out on the grounds, it's obvious that you're not out in the country. read more
