Last night 12 of us dined at The George on the Riverwalk. I haven't eaten here in quite a while. I had the Seared Diver Sea Scallops, which came with a delicious leek and mushroom risotto with a truffle sauce. It was excellent! Tony had the sesame crusted ahi tuna with bok choy, shitake mushrooms, etc. Another excellent dish. I think everyone enjoyed their dinner. Great service too! Lots of good choices on the menu. Ate here with a large group on a weekday night. Ordered a Caesar salad, seared diver sea scallop dish, and a side of sweet potato fries. The Caesar salad was okay, came with grated Parmesan. I would've preferred shredded fresh Parmesan. The scallop dish came with Corn Leek Mushroom Risotto, Truffle Vinaigrette. The scallops were cooked very well, were so tender. The risotto on the other hand, was partially uncooked. But guess it depends on the person, since two of my friends didn't think so and thought it was cooked fine. Sweet potato fries were whatever. Usually they are served with a sweet seasoning, but I requested to not have that. They were a bit greasy and not that crispy. The restaurant is a nice location, located on the Riverwalk. Everything went well: the staff, the view, the food, and the prices! We tried a few apps and entrees and were so full and satisfied: the only thing my friends did not like was the calamari because it was not seasoned. But the crab dip, Rockefeller oysters (out of the shell), Caesar salad, black bass, lobster tails, and catfish were delicious. The coconut rice with the red curry paired with my bass was unmatched. Being right next to the water is definitely the appeal of this place. It was relaxing having our Sunday brunch and watching the passerby's. The food was nothing special. The crab bisque came out lukewarm which is never ideal and the crab cake on my crab cake Benedict were so tiny! Never seen anything like it. We were visiting the area and meeting friends for Sunday brunch, and they suggested The George. We got a wonderful table outside with a lovely river view. The food is very, very good here. And the Riverwalk prices were comparable to anywhere else in the area. Ingrid was our server, she was very pleasant and attentive. So the food: For an appetizer we tried the baked Brie. It came with pita, spreadable garlic, olives. We asked for more pita bread, which they charge for, so it seems to be the trend for restaurants to do this. Not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. For brunch; we tried the ham and cheese omelette, sides of biscuits, bacon & pimento cheese burger, green tomato Benedict, sweet potato fries, and shrimp and grits. My favorite dish. The shrimp and grits was probably the best I have had anywhere so far. It had amazing flavor, the shrimp were cooked perfectly and it was a tomato based sauce, which went well with the andouille sausage. Absolutely wonderful! Overall, we had a nice time, very leasurely, and was not rushed out. We enjoyed that river view as long as possible! Unfortunately, we were with friends, so I took no food pics this time, but everyone enjoyed their food. If you want great food with an awesome view, get a table outside at the George. Another great spot on the Riverwalk with a fabulous view of the river. The baked Brie was a great shareable appetizer for our group of 8. We loved it. I had the goat cheese crusted chicken breast which was absolutely delicious. I heard the steaks were excellent and would try that the next time. I had a delicious chocolate cake for dessert, but I didn't manage to get a photo before I devoured it. Service was excellent. If I'd had more time in Wilmington, I would've been back. Sad to say that the location is what this restaurant has going for it. With an ideal view of the Cape Fear river and plenty of patio space, we have often passed and thought to go there. Yesterday was a beautiful evening so we decided to go there. I called at 5:30 to see if we could secure a table for two on the patio around 6. I was told they couldn't guarantee anything, but we could make a reservation through Opentable because they don't take same day over the phone reservations. That is an odd management choice, but it was even odder when we got there at 6 and (thanks to our Opentable reservation) were seated on the patio with one other table used. Didn't really make much sense. Their menu is pretty simple beachy food. Lots of seafood with a few pasta dishes. They have some good looking salads and burgers as well. We started with truffle fries and I had the green salad with grilled shrimp and my boyfriend had a burger with brussels sprouts. Truffle fries were fine, not the best ever but they were certainly truffle fries. I enjoyed my salad but was missing the pears. My boyfriend's burger, however, was incredibly undercooked. The outside was charred and the inside still cool. The brussels were also still raw. They took that dish off our bill. For a side of truffle fries, my salad, and 2 teas, it was $40. Not really worth it to us for subpar food. It is a great sunset spot and could be a wonderful place to enjoy a cocktail and appetizer or dessert. Not sure about a full meal though. read more

My last review was 2019. I have eaten here a few times since then but never had George's on my short list of places to eat. Mainly because it kind of went down a little when it came to the quality of the food. So we wanted a decent sit down restaurant to eat at on a Saturday night. George's was not on our list, but we could not get a reservation anywhere else. I used the Open Table app and found a slot at George's, and decided to give them a try. I am glad I did. The food was superb. Much better than my previous visits. Oysters Rockefeller and calamari were excellent. I ordered the ribeye (not on the main menu) and thought it is very good. My guests were very impressed with their entrees. We talked to the waitress and she said George's is under new ownership. The new owners wanted to go back to a more fine dining experience, though casual dress. I could tell from the service and food that they are doing a great job implementing their vision. If you have never been here before, George's serves American food with a Southern and seafood focus. Very nice indoor and outdoor seating. Located right on the River walk in downtown. I would strongly suggest making reservations if going for dinner on the weekends. Full bar with excellent selection of drinks. read more

It was a little cool on outdoor patio this morning, so hostess was accommodating and moved us inside! Still have a view of the river by a Window seat! Started out brunch with a flight of mimosas and a Bloody Mary! Three of us chose an Eggs Benedict type course, which all were very good, especially the Crab Benedict! Note they are on a small biscuit though, instead of the traditional English Muffin! Service was good and we had plenty of time to spare before our show! Although street parking is free on Sundays, there is a private lot directly across from the restaurant, which honors 3 hours of free parking! I arrived into town at the start of the Sunday brunch rush, and the outdoor patio seating (predictably) was completely filled. Which was fine as I preferred indoor seating in order to wake up from my flight. Getting seated inside was quick, and within minutes I had my order in. I went with their chicken and waffles, which I received in less than 5 minutes. The mixed berry compote was sweet, one may argue even too sweet but with how salty the fried chicken was it helped tame some of the saltiness. The fried chicken was a good portion, but the taste reminded me more of a pre-cooked chicken tender you'd microwave. If I go back, I'll skip this particular dish as it wasn't worth the $17-ish tag. Despite a full crowd outside, the staff were still attentive to the few of us inside, and seemed to make a point about refilling our coffees before we were at the halfway point. If you're in town, I think a visit here is still worth it. Just be sure to get there early if you're hoping for a seat on the patio (especially if you're with a group). This place is cute but, on the small-ish side when you can't use their outdoor seating area. Reservations are recommended if you want a normal table. We walked in without a reservation and were relegated to a high-top table in the bar area. High-tops are not very comfortable in general and go figure.... We weren't very comfortable. The menu is a bit eclectic.... But, its fine for the area. Some of the menu offerings could use a bit more judgement, experience or an adult in the kitchen. I ordered the PEI mussels, and while they were delicious, there was an entire bowl of broth that I had to leave since they only give you two little thin slices of toasted bread. What a total waste leaving all the wonderful broth. Serving even day-old toasted bread with the mussels would cost very little and would make for a far better presentation, and the restaurant would not look so miserly. We also ordered a Brussel sprouts appetizer and it was very good. For dinner, I ordered the "Smoked Bacon & Pimento Cheese" burger but they didn't have regular American cheese for it. Only cheddar and pimento cheese. The "Smoked Bacon" was nothing special at all. I've gotten better bacon from Denny's. It's not like the bacon was Neuske's bacon which would have made a far better item for the burger. Also, keeping a few slices of pasteurized American cheese on hand for those that don't want cheddar or pimento cheese would give the diner a different impression of the restaurant. I wanted neither and opted for no cheese since the burger I ordered was medium rare. The burger came out well done and it was dry. It was like eating a hockey puck. The Mrs ordered a filet with mushroom gravy and spinach and it was gorgeous and it tasted wonderful! I walked away from the dinner thinking that if there was an experienced chef in the kitchen and experienced manager running the restaurant things may have been different. What a great location! We sat inside because it was a bit chilly but still had views of the river. I love that it was right on the boardwalk. The staff was attentive and energetic. Food was delicious! For apps we had Brussels sprouts, Bree, crab cakes, and fried oysters. I'm not the biggest fan of Brussel sprouts but they were so crispy and savory. The rest of the apps were also perfection! I have the beets and goat cheese salad with fried oysters. I can't remember what sauce was on the salad but wow! They did a great job. We walked in on a Monday evening without expectations. We were pleasantly surprised. Although our server was new, she was trying. I had the salmon, which was delicious. Presentation was good and cooked to perfection. I substituted the succotash for brussel sprouts which paired well with the fish. I highly recommend this dish. My partner ordered the garlic shrimp appetizer and a side of spinach for her meal. The shrimp was oh so garlicky and yummy. We paired our meals with a bottle of Pinot Grigio. This was one of the best meals I have had post COVID pandemic. I feel like the quality of food and service has been struggling at many restaurants but not at the George! We had a 7;30 reservation for inside but it was such a nice night we asked if there was an availability on their deck. They seated us out there in just a few minutes while we grabbed a beer at the bar. We ordered the fried Brussels Sprouts as an appetizer. They were absolutely delicious and good portion size. I had a really great dinner lastnight. There was something missing to give it that 5 stars, but I really did enjoy my meal. We had reservations at 615. Outside was full (and that is the prime place to eat). Parking is comped if you park across the street, don't pay, go inside and get a pad, then go put it in your car). I walked in the front Door and waited at the hostess stand for alittle bit and noticed nobody was really inside. So, I walked outside and I guess that is where the main hostess stand is. We walked the scenic Riverwalk looking for something tasty after a day of exploring North Carolina and landed on the deck of The George. Went for my partner's birthday. Was seated and it took the server 20 mins to get to our table. She was putting center candles on the table and passed right by; did not even know what tables she was working. I totally believe the manager was incompetent cause she kept looking at our table that had dishes and glasses that needed to be cleared before our main course which were never cleared. I personally think the food is subpar and that people are simply paying for the ambience and location on the riverwalk. Nothing was worth coming back for. The clam chowder was extremely thin and I could tell the clams were canned. The oysters Rockefeller had a really weird flavor and I didn't care for them at all. The wine menu for such an upscale restaurant was also lacking...there's not many options by the glass. During Mom's first visit to my new home, we walked to an early lunch along the riverwalk right before a storm rolled in. I got a mixed greens salad with grilled chicken and thousand island dressing and she got a mixed greens salad with egg and a citrus vinaigrette dressing. This restaurant had a great view of the water and we were lucky to sit outside. It was pretty warm but they at least at some overhead fans to help with that. Our waitress was nice enough but seemed so pushy to take our orders. We had our two babies so we were literally waiting for 10 min for the high chairs to come so we could get them settled and the waitress must've asked us if we were ready to order at least three times before we even got the high chairs. The food was good. I had the salmon with veggies and my husband had the lobster ravioli. Wow, I thought the view would be the star but I was wrong. Our server, Cathy from LongIsland, was immediately accommodating and delightful. Although we took a while to order, no mistakes were made. It was during Restaurant Week so we had the option of ordering the Restaurant Week menu or the regular menu.
