Extremely Disappointing Dining Experience I visited this restaurant last Saturday evening. There was a concert nearby, and the parking garage shared by the restaurant and hotel was charging $10 for parking. I explained to the parking attendant that I was dining at the restaurant and not attending the concert, but I was told that everyone entering the lot would be charged the $10 fee. Rather than pay, I left the lot and called the restaurant for clarification. The employee who answered the phone advised me to proceed to the valet area and informed me that my server would be able to assist with the parking issue. Upon arrival, the hostess, Lacey, was very pleasant and confirmed that while she was unfamiliar with the parking policy, my server, Julia, should be able to help. Once seated, Julia initially assured us that we would receive excellent service, but she was also unaware of the parking situation and needed to consult with her manager. After several trips back and forth, she informed us that the parking fee would simply be added to our check and that it would be $5.50. Since this differed from the amount quoted at the garage, I asked her to verify the information. She returned again, stating that the manager had confirmed the charge. When I requested to speak directly with the manager, I was told he was too busy to come to the table. At that point, the restaurant was far from busy, with most of the tables unoccupied. Despite multiple requests, the manager, Shane, never came to speak with us. Instead, Julia returned with a discount code from the that she said could be used to reduce the parking fee. While I was attempting to navigate the parking app and apply the discount, our appetizers were delivered. The food runner placed the dishes on the edge of the table and walked away without a word. We initially assumed she was returning with additional plates, but she never came back. Meanwhile, I continued trying to resolve the parking issue myself. Even with the discount code, the parking charge ended up being $6.45--more than the amount I had originally been told. The most disappointing aspect of this experience was not the parking fee itself, but the complete lack of customer service and management involvement. When guests are paying premium prices for a fine dining experience, they should reasonably expect attentive service, clear communication, and management support when problems arise. A brief conversation from the manager could have gone a long way toward resolving the situation and making us feel valued as customers. There are many excellent dining options in Wilmington. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I cannot recommend this restaurant. The food may have been acceptable, but the poor communication, lack of accountability, and indifference to customer concerns overshadowed the entire evening. read more

We had dinner there for the first time Valentine's Day. When we arrived at the hostess desk to check in, the head hostess lady did not smile or greet us in anyway. The only thing she said is they were running a little late and our name would be called. Although there were many tables available, they sat us at a table that we did not feel comfortable with. I went back to the hostess desk and asked if we could move into the available booth. The same lady said that there were no booths available and seemed very put off by the request. I pointed to the open booth and asked what about that one and she simply told the hostess to see us there. When we sat at the table, it had been recently wiped down but the bus boy had left it soaking wet. He obviously did not relate to cleaning the table, and the customers experience when seated. We ordered the shrimp appetizer. When it arrived, my wife asked why do the shrimp look grey in color. I told her it must be the seasoning and took the first bite that revealed they were almost raw. Hopefully they were sushi grade. We sent that dish back. Luckily our waitress was awesome. My seafood entrée was excellent and my wife's salmon was good. Our cheesecake dessert had small piece of glass in it that I bid down on. Luckily I did not bite Hard and was able to spit it out. I originally thought it may have been a hard piece of the graham cracker crust. I showed the waitress the piece of glass and said that someone must've broken something in the kitchen that and that she should inform the chef. Not sure if she did or not. For the price, it seems like their captive audiences are business travelers or tourists staying at the hotel. read more

We made a reservation and we were excited to try this place. Our waitress Brianna met us at our table as soon as we were sat and wanted drink orders and asked if we wanted an appetizer. We literally just sat down. She had poor knowledge of the menu when asked about items. Once we put our order in, we waiting a long time for our food to come out, which arrived cold. The ribs were overcooked and dry. My crab cakes were ok, claimed to be lump crab but, more like shredded, and the scallops were really good. While my brother-in-law was still eating she brought our check. She never asked if we wanted coffee or dessert. While she stood there I asked everyone at the table if they wanted coffee or dessert. Steam is located downtown, right by the water which makes for some lovely views. However, for the price, the food is ok. Not bad, but there are some incredible places in Wilmington that cost way less. It's good if you have people who want to be near the water. We stopped in late on a Saturday night, we were staying at a nearby hotel. I was super impressed by the hotel lobby and greeting and the decor of both hotel and restaurant were very nice. We were seated right away, the restaurant was very quiet. The view is beautiful and the dining room was gorgeous. Trendy, but also cozy. All kinds of seating to accommodate every size and type of party. We started with the pimiento and pickle plate. It was very unique- the pimiento had a very different consistency. It was thick and kind of gloppy like a cold queso, but the flavor was good. The pickled veggies were tart and yummy! I ordered the Cape Cobb salad with extra dressing. The salad was a generous entree portion and fresh. Crisp veggies, plump prawns and crab. It was sort of bland and I only got a small cup of dressing. It needed some salt and pepper and for sure some dressing. Our server didn't come back to check on us for a while. I couldn't really eat it- the lettuce was hearty and difficult to eat without dressing. I flagged someone down and asked her to bring 2 more dressings and the salt and pepper. She returned much later with s&p, but said the kitchen had to give her the dressing. She forgot, and was out cleaning it setting tables. She came by to check, again, much much later. I still hadn't eaten any of the salad that was in front of me. I asked again for 2 dressings. She returned ten minutes later with 1. I also overheard her and the kitchen staff talking about it. It was terribly unprofessional. The server was not interested in listening or serving us. She did check in again and asked if I wanted anything else. I really must say, this in one of the better dinners we have had here in North Carolina. The service was outstanding and the ambiance was superb! Steam is not a fancy restaurant, though it could be. Its thoughtfully decorated, nice separation of tables and artfully furnished. You can drop in for a burger or a meal. We ordered the pappardelle with seafood and it came in a buttery cream sauce that was to die for! The plate had 3 wonderfully seared scallops, three nicely grilled succulent shrimp and a huge tablespoon or two of crabmeat nestled in the middle. Along with some nicely charred peasant bread and we were in heaven. Why you might ask? Well everyone in NC thinks seafood should all be fried. Its hard to find a restaurant that can make anything else but fried seafood. How un-inspired. But not Steam! The Mrs ordered a small Caesar salad which was thoughtfully assembled and I ordered the crab corn chowder which was thick and creamy. To top it off.... Our server, Joe was absolutely the epitome of service. Well mannered, soft spoken, genteel and attentive. I couldn't ask for anything more. Joe made last night's dinner as much as the food and ambiance. Joe, well done and thank you! Would we return, Absolutely.... Without question. My friend took me here for my birthday on Saturday and it was lovely! The food was delicious and the service was great! Since we came during Valentine's Day weekend, they had a special menu option. We ended up using it. It was delicious. I am Gluten Free and it was so easy to ensure I ordered correctly. I got the scallops and beet risotto for the main dish and it was perfect! We went for lunch before seeing a play. The hostess seated us and took our order. I order corn and crab chowder and crab cake on croissant my husband order the 2 1/4 lb cheese burger. The soup came out barely warm and cool in some spots. The soup seems to have a lot of corn and carrots but not any crab. It also takes like heavy cream that hasn't been seasoned or cooked. It was very bland. When the crab cake came out. The croissant was stale and crab cake was warm and flavorless. My husband said the burgers were definitely not 2 1/4 lbs. The French fries which we paid extra for were also bad and seemed to be reheated. Meanwhile we never had anyone come to the table like a waiter. Steam did not disappoint. It is a hidden gem, nestled on the 2nd floor of the Embassy Suites hotel along the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington! We started our night with cocktails at Cloud 9, the rooftop bar at the top of the Embassy Suites. The view was spectacular and the drink choices plentiful and delicious! Service was with a smile and the atmosphere overlooking the Cape Fear River and the Battleship NC and downtown Wilmington was just beautiful! We then went downstairs for our anniversary river. We weren't sure what to expect of a seafood restaurant in the Embassy Suites, but the location enticed us to give it a try and we are so glad we did! While not crowded, all the tables along the river were taken, so there was a nice atmosphere to be had! The view went on forever ... we could see up and down the river and saw a spectacular sunset right in front of our table! The service was understated and attentive. Our waiter recommended the diver scallops and seafood pasta and neither disappointed! Although we did start with the crab and corn chowder, which we decided would be a meal in itself next time we visit -- so thick and filled with corn, crab, potatoes and a surprise hush puppy. Simply delicious! We enjoyed a bottle of Chianti and some homemade rolls - warm with a hint of salt! We didn't even need butter! - while we waited for our mains. As noted, the diver scallops with a sweet potato purée and a winter veggie hash (yes, winter veggie, but it was delicious - a combination of carrots, beets, chestnuts and other delightful bites that complemented the sweet potato purée and scallops. It was in a word, sublime. Definitely recommend it! My husband enjoyed the seafood pappardelle pasta -- he enjoys a bit of heat and the blackened scallops along with crab and shrimp were just the ticket! Friends and I dined at Steam for an early dinner before going to the Santana Concert (fabulous concert by the way) at the new Riverfront Park Amphitheater. I had a glass of wine and the Shrimp and Grits (ditto with one of my friends). It was just okay. It was a pretty small portion and expensive ($27), only four shrimp, and too much scallions that overpowered the grits. There were mushrooms but just small slivers of them. The grits had smoked gouda, but I really didn't taste that flavor at all. The presentation was pretty but I wouldn't order it again. One friend had the diver scallops ($32). She said they were excellent but again only four. The other had the sundried tomato cavatappi, which she really enjoyed. I guess this is typical of a hotel restaurant. We made lunch reservations on a Saturday during restaurant week and arrived about 1pm. There were plenty of seating available. It's located inside the Embassy Suites. Park in the Wilmington Convention Center parking garage. To get to the restaurant from the parking garage, go to the 2nd level of the garage. Once there, take separate elevator, right by the parking garage elevators to the 1st level, which then takes you to the hotel lobby. Go towards the hotel front desk and make a right towards the end. You'll see stairs to take you to Steam on the 2nd floor. Don't forget to get your parking ticket validated at the restaurant. If you decide to stay for more than a hour in town, you can pay $3.50 at the restaurant to park for the whole day in the garage. Now on to the food. Blue crab and corn chowder was good, it had a nice smoked flavor from the bacon. However, it was watery and could be thickened more. It came with one hushpuppy, which was soft, moist and salty with a crispy exterior. I wished there were more hushpuppies served with the chowder! Fries were ok-slightly crispy, steak-cut kind. I prefer thin cut fries. The house made chips, which automatically come with the sandwiches, were deliciouly seasoned with an addictive salty and sweet mixture. They were fried perfectly and not greasy. My partner ordered the pork belly cheese sandwich, which comes with house-cured heritage breed pork belly, smoked Gouda, collard green chow chow. He didn't like it too much, because it was too sweet, there was too much pork, and there was too little cheese. It came on Texas toast and the pork was served ~1/2 inch thick slices, as you can see in the picture. The pork was nothing special, maybe if it had a crispy skin top layer, it would have tasted better, instead of just biting into mushy fat. The whole sandwich might have also tasted better if there was just one layer of pork, tripled the amount of smoked Gouda cheese, and served on crusty bread. I ordered the "No Temp Burger Burger", which is described as two 1/4 griddled patties, American cheese, house bread & butter pickles, secret sauce, and sliced onion on a brioche bun with everything bagel seasoning. There was a very generous amount of pickles and onion. A little too much onion for my taste but perfect for someone who loves raw onion. Caution, it is a very messy burger and juices will be all over your hands and arms. The bioche bun was nicely toasted and it came with a good amount of cheese. I loved the thin meat patties, they were tender and juicy. The "secret sauce" was nothing special, basically some blend of mayonnaise and ketchup. Nonetheless, the burger overall was tasty and hit the spot. The restaurant is very nice, comfortable, and clean with a modern, almost upscale setting. Our waitress came to meet us immediately. Told us specials, took our drink order. Ordered a Bloody Mary, extra olives. Drink arrived, informed out of olives. Drink was excellent still. Let it pass. Gave waitress our order. 1 burger, fries, soup. Just a quick bite, want to see fireworks in 45 min. Took 30 minutes, to get soup. Strike 2. Soup tasted like a doctored up canned soup. Let waitress know, show starts in 14 minutes..make the rest of order to go. 15 minutes later, we got the burger and fries. No napkins, utensils, condiments to go. Strike 3. Burger was dry, and slapped together, like something I would have gotten at McDonald's, but not even that flavorful. Bill came to $60+ , with $9 tip on top. $70 for 1 burger, fries, bowl of soup and 2 drinks. This was not my 1st unsavory experience at Steam, but I thought I'd give it another chance. This is my new favorite brunch place on the weekend! It is located in the Embassy Suites downtown on the second floor, there is a lot of indoor seating and beautiful outdoor seating with a view of the river and boats. They have a brunch menu with at least ten different options and they do $3 mimosas which is my favorite. I ordered the turkey club which was super thick and delicious and there fries are so yummy and big. My boyfriend got the burger and i am not a huge burger fan but it was delicious and juicy! We also tried the biscuits which were flavorful and warm. The staff is very attentive and friendly. This place is the perfect place to enjoy water views and eat great food, I cannot wait to go back and try there dinner options!! 10/10 recommend read more

Crab and crab soup was tasty but all corn and potatoes. Very little crab. The hush puppy served with it was black and totally dried out inside. Salad was okay but HUGE. could have fed a family of 4. The restaurant was booked both Saturday and Sunday. My husband got the ribeye and I got the salmon. Both were good, not amazing, but solid. I tried an IPA they had on tap, and that was great! We also got their vegetable pasta to go and that was really good. We will probably be back. Our server and bar tender were both very friendly and personable. The hostess was a bit rude when we went back on Saturday to sit at the bar, but that won't deter us from future visits. Maybe she was having an off night? The noodle dish I wasn't fond of the flavors, and our waitress "Brittney" removed it, apologized and brought me another choice. What a wonderful day February 23rd was to go and check out our newest restaurant on the Cape Fear River, Steam. We went to look at the banquet facilities for a potential event in 2019 and decided that we would stay for lunch. I had heard about this beautiful terrace that they had that you can eat on and when they asked where we wanted to be seated we said the terrace. We got a seat right near the open air section, overlooking the Cape Fear River. In One Direction overlooking the new Marina in the other direction the Cape Fear River in all of its glory. The restaurant complimented the light Airy feel of the south in the spring. Nice and roomy, not tables on top of tables, squeezing people in. The colors have a "beachy Country Club man" feel to it. I can't really put my finger on it a hundred percent but after talking with the food and beverage manager he told me he picked everything out and so I'd say it definitely has a masculine flair with simple lines and very comfortable seating. It's on the second floor of the hotel the Embassy Suites which opened not long ago. Its right next to the Chamber of Commerce and right near the Wilmington Convention Center. The food was incredible. The menu was great with lots of lunch choices at reasonable prices. Healthy options as well as splurge items. Their cocktail list was great and from what I hear the new Rooftop Bar that will open in a few weeks has a great mixologist who's going to be making fun drinks on the rooftop. I can't remember the drinks name I had, but it was pomegranate with champagne, it was wonderful! My friend had a mixture of lavender with champagne and I think that was called "lavender and lace", she loved it as well. For lunch I ordered the crabcake with greens and a kind of garlic sauce it was out of this world good, light and yet so tasty I was glad I ordered it. My friend ordered salmon with cheese grits and green beans and she ate every bite just like I did. We even ordered a second cocktail so we could stay and enjoy lunch even longer.
