First visit to the gill tavern and it won't be the last. LOVE the vibe. Like a rustic general store. Beautiful bar, eclectic "open" kitchen which is an understatement. Great outside seating and the porch area is really unique. Beautiful days just take it to another level. Mother's Day dinner entrees were good. Steak, Niçoise salad and veggie tacos. Honey gochujang wings. Choch pot au crème for dessert. Wines are reasonably priced. Entrees I was most interested in going to other tables was the roast chicken and beans as well as the burger. My husband and I have enjoyed Gill Tavern several times. Last night we brought guests. We had an outstanding experience. The food and the cocktails were second to none. We started with the charcuterie and several signature cocktails. Wow! We had the lobster roll which was prepared beautifully in a delectable baguette. Our other 3 entrees were excellent too. A gorgeous burger, cooked just the way my grill obsessed husband liked it! The Cuban flatbread was loved as well as the outstanding fried chicken dinner. Wow! In this tiny town resides a five star dining experience. The setting feels like someone's home. I sat at the bar as I was eating along, but before long I struck up a conversation with someone else at the bar and the bartendress. I'd been craving steak and ordered their skirt steak. As a former professional cook at a high-end winery restaurant, I was shocked at how beautifully this whole plate was planned and delivered. It was beautiful and every element needed to be included in every bite. It had been a long time since I'd eaten such a perfect melange of flavors. The parsnip purée with the perfectly grilled steak blew my mind. And then the bar tendress told me that the owner of the place was the guy working the grill. We were driving through this picturesque town and found a small tavern in the town center. Walker Widner is the Chef/Owner and has found a beautiful building on the National Historic Register to serve his farm to table delicious meals. This is a small tavern with a single chef so the wait was rather long, easily 45 minutes just to get our appetizers and another half hour for the mains. I tried the fried chicken which was a bit overcooked and not juicy, although it tasted fine. Sides were yummy, smoky beans, fluffy cornbread, coleslaw with a touch of cumin and the collard greens had a touch of sweetness. Wifey had the hamburger which she said was really delicious but her one side of sliced potatoes were cold when they got to the table and it was so busy there was no use asking to have them heat it up, it would have taken another half an hour, so that was very disappointing, they just weren't good cold so she didn't eat them and brought them home. I ate a lovely milk chocolate pot du creme for dessert, it came with a crispy lemon tinged shortbread cookie. I'd ordered a cinnabon to-go for the next morning and was quite surprised to open the box and find it looked like someone had eaten all the layers of the bun and left me the middle and then threw in some chopped apples and cinnamon topped with whipped cream for a consolation prize. I'm sure I'll heat it up and it will be warm and gooey and delicious but I've never seen a cinnamon bun that looked like this. This was our first time here and I would definitely come back to try other dishes. It is fairly pricey, about $150 with tip for 2, with $36 of that being the bar bill. The wait staff and bartender were very, very nice. We wouldn't eat here regularly it's far too expensive, plus we make most of the menu items ourselves at home -- steak, burgers, tacos, even pan fried chicken -- and I do like to eat food I don't normally cook for myself when I go out, but it's definitely a nice night out in a lively place. read more

In trying to figure out why people love this place, I realized... it's the booze and wine list. Ok that's fair. It is a tavern, after all. The menu is really limited. The food just isn't amazing. In fact sometimes it's just straight up bad. Last night the catfish tacos (2 tacos for $18!!!) showed up burned black, with a tortilla that was ripped literally in pieces. The waiter was creepy with no personal space. The potatoes were dry and tasted like they had been left on the grill for too long. Two stars for the location which is pretty and the delicious pickles they appear to make. read more

Food- absolutely delicious. We had a delightful dinner which consisted of a gluten free flat bread with seasonal fresh vegetable placed on top of a homemade pesto sauce with a local cheese. Then we had a bass fish with delicious rice, delectable onions and vegetables. It was cooked perfectly. We can't really say enough about the People at the Gill Tavern. The food is always superb. Service is warm, friendly kind, and punctual. And for the best restaurant around on a cold February night for a fair price. We left the table well fed and smiling. I love the ambience at the GT. Been here only twice with our friends from Brattleboro, VT. and we really love it. located in an old general store with some tables on porch and some more out front, the feeling is historic, comfortable, and unique. The drinks are great. I had a "Baron in the Trees" both times and had to hunt down a bottle of Cardamaro so I could make them at home. The first time we went none of us really knew what an "orange wine" was. Waiter informed with a very complete description and offered a taste for free. Interesting. The wait staff we've had have been efficient, pleasant, and helpful. No complaints there. The menu is small (the restaurant and kitchen are small!) but very good with a range of options. We adore the smoked cheddar biscuits and the mussels as starters. The summer salad is also great. My wife loves the fried chicken with smoked beans and greens, and got it both times. The strip steak is wonderful and the salmon is grilled but moist. I've had a flat bread, which was delicious, if a bit on the dry side, and am grateful for the veg/GF options. We tried to order mussels last time but the truck was stuck in weekend traffic. We saw it arrive just in time for desert and were tempted to order them! The deserts seem to change, but they have had pot de creme both times we have been there, which is creamy and deep with flavor. Yes, the restaurant is small, yes it can get busy, but the food has been very good with some great "upscale country" touches; the wait staff, even if sometimes taxed on busy nights, has always been great; the "special" drinks are interesting and varied; and we love the location and the building. We "get" what they are doing and we appreciate it. We'll absolutely go again when we are out that way. read more

This restaurant is a local treasure that should attract more than locals. Well, it does, but I'm thinking: wonderful food, friendly staff, great lighting, even. It should have a line out the door every day. I came here a couple years ago, after places reopened post-Covid, based on neighbors' recommendation, and had a burger. It was memorable -- local meat and cheese, a bun from a groovy nearby bakery, organic greens -- and I remember telling a friend I thought it the best I'd ever had. I came in tonight for another (had a craving) but decided at last min to get the pan-fried chicken. Everything on the plate was truly sensational: really flavorful collards, coleslaw, beans. I don't know what made them all so good but they all were so good. And the chicken was moist and delicious and really hit home. The homemade (like almost everything, I guess) cornbread was a nice touch. Truly: wonderful. I come here a lot with my foodie pals visiting from NYC and Boston (and Santa Fe, as of a few days ago, as a treat after a friend's long drive to drop her two kids off at nearby colleges) and they are always so pleased. We went on an evening and went into the restaurant which was very busy and decided to take a seat outside. We were seated in given menus and then we waited. And we waited and we waited and we waited. At no time in the next 15 minutes did anyone come to fill our water glasses or take a drink order or even introduced themselves as our server. So we left. And although it looked like it may be a nice restaurant it will not get my business due to the poor service. read more

We were really blown away with the wonderfully bold and playful flavors! I started with the warm beat salad then went for the honey and cider glazed chicken I highly recommend both! Some of the best chicken I have had in a long time, I found it smoky and sweet with a tang at the end it was just right! I really wanted to like this place but three things made it meh, if not ugh: - We were seated at the two-top at the end of the bar and there were so many staff continually milling around there, I either had an ass or an elbow near by face through the whole dinner, and my partner and I could hardly hear each other from across the table because of all the talking and laughing happening right next to us. When I got up to go to the restroom and when I returned, I had to stand and wait for the staff to either stop chatting with each other or get their tray and go, much less notice that a customer was trying to get back to the table that they were completely blocking. It's a total bottleneck of staff, and customers should not be made to sit in the middle of it. Find another place for that table and just use it as a staff thoroughfare, which is clearly needed. - The smoked cheddar biscuits smelled and tasted like freezer burn and/or were stale. They were dry and hard, with very little flavor, ugh. - My entree had hard, inedible herb stems (I think thyme?) sprinkled all over it, which could cause choking. Half inch pieces, two inch pieces--a lot of little twigs that cannot be and are not meant be be swallowed. Fortunately, I spit out the two that ended up on my fork before trying to swallow them. WTAF??? Not an enjoyable time. read more

We were in the mood for Sunday brunch so we decided to try out Gill Tavern for the first time. When we arrived we were excited at the layout of the restaurant and the overall atmosphere was incredible. We loved the rustic feel of the restaurant and thought that the decor was comforting. Our waitress was very polite and the brunch menu was great. We ended up ordering a two egg sammy as well as the steak and eggs. When the food arrived the plating was great and everything smelled delicious. The potatoes were seasoned to perfection, the eggs were perfect and the steak was made exactly how I wished. In the end we thoroughly enjoyed our meals and we can't wait to come back in the future. The next time we stop in it will be for dinner since everything we ordered was perfect. read more

A delightful, delicious experience. Fresh, creative dishes paired with excellent service and charming ambience. Start to finish, we had an exceptional meal. My partner and I spontaneously decided to dine out after a long drive, it was 4PM and every place we wanted to go was closed until 5PM (fair enough but we didn't want to wait). I called The Gill Tavern and lo and behold they were open for service and booked us a table on the spot. We are vegetarians and I was pleasantly surprised at the many options available on their carefully curated menu. I'm glad I started the meal with a cocktail from the bar, it was the perfect size, well balanced, refreshing and relaxing at the same time. We ordered the Greek salad which turned out to be a lovely fresh take on the traditional. The greens were farm picked & gorgeous, razor thin onions, just the right amount of Feta and a perfect vinaigrette. A savory medley of cured olives on the side was the perfect touch. The vegetarian flat bread was golden and topped with Gorgonzola and more fresh greens served on a beautiful wooden board. The vegetarian tacos were great, bursting with clean, fresh veggies and an awesome dressing with perfectly roasted vegetables on the side. I was glad there was only one dessert option because I might have chosen something other than the Pot De Crème which was absolutely heavenly. We loved the music and decor, even the bathroom is charming. The service was warm and professional with just the right amount of engagement. The Gill Tavern maintains a wonderful balance of being both refined and cozy at the same time. Kudos to all and thank you for a great time. We look forward to our next visit. read more

Got a word of mouth heads up to try this place. Basically a group of people working very well together in a modest location that provide outstanding results. Everything they do, they do well. Service was excellent, restroom was clean and the food of course is what you should be there for. Arrived for a late lunch and the place filled up quickly as we moved toward dinner time. After spending the day exploring The Clark Institute, I had the onerous task of driving back to the city. The Gill Tavern ended up being a prudent rest stop. It's located approximately 1/2 way between Williamstown and Boston proper. My friend and his lovely wife met me here in the early evening. We were seated immediately.
