As far as dive bars go, The Gin Mill is a pretty solid one. Happy hour here is an insanely good value, though service can be slow at times. On my most recent visit there was just one bartender on for happy hour taking care of the entire bar as well as the tables sitting outside, but she was moving quick and got everyone served in a decent amount of time like a pro. The inside of this bar is very old school, with large wooden bar, wooden bar stools and tables that look like they've been well worn in. Happy hour food here is served in large portions. We got seasoned tater tots and jalapeno poppers that were $6 each, along with two rounds of $5 well drinks served in surprisingly large glasses. The tater tots were delicious, but the jalapeno poppers were honestly kind of bland. Everything in this bar is also just a little bit sticky too, so watch where you're putting your elbows. Wow, i haven't been here in awhile. I'm super glad to be back. I came here thinking they still had the $1 beer specials but I was wrong i think it might have beer their sister location that does this. Their Dr. Pepper Bombs are so delicious and only $6 on Wednesdays lucky me. The group I was with decided to get some pitchers because they are only $14. I saw that they have cheaper wings on the weekends I definitely will be coming back for that. They were regular price today $25.99 for 16. The service so far is great and the bartenders are nice. Gets packed at night but now that I'm old, I'm a day drinker and home by 9pm so that's a-okay for me. Unacceptable Racial Discrimination - Avoid at All Costs! I am deeply disturbed by the treatment I received at this bar today. I waited for a long time, and even after informing the bartender multiple times that I was ready to order, she ignored me, claiming she was "too busy." Yet, she immediately served several white patrons who arrived long after I did. When I tried to ask a waiter for help, he was incredibly rude and told me "it wasn't his business." The most shocking moment was when I briefly stepped away and a white woman sat in my spot--the bartender served her instantaneously. As the only Asian person in the bar, it became painfully clear that I was being systematically ignored. It is 2026, and I cannot believe such blatant discrimination still exists. I tried to speak with the duty manager, but the staff refused to let me, showing zero accountability. Two kind ladies nearby actually offered to order for me because they saw how I was being treated. While I appreciated their kindness, it's heartbreaking that as an Asian person, I'm not even allowed to place my own order here. This establishment is exclusionary and biased. A disappointing lack of signature drinks and uneven service, was sorry I spent a happy hour here during covid fall weather. There was really nothing that stood out about this place, besides it's averageness. It may be a dive bar but it lacked the low key, warm charm some might expect. The first issue was the hostess. She was not friendly and didn't seem to take interest in seating us. When we did sit down, the busboy was prompt and got us water (in 8 oz plastic cups). So, a mixed bag for service. The drink options were not memorable. Some local craft beer to supplement the usual Guinness option, but nothing "wow." San gria and mule options but no gin drinks. Fun fact: The waiter helpfully explained that a gin mill was a term for a bar, but not really related to gin. Another let down for this spot. The food, which is required by NY state law, was also average to forgettable. The sliders were fine but the Mac and cheese sliders were too doughy. It's a nice sports bar with lots of big-screen TVs inside and outside. This is a low-key sports bar on 81st & Amsterdam Ave in the UWS. Affordable bar food and the long 1/2 price happy hour from 3-7 every day. $5 draft beer is perfect for game day. Chicken Sandwiches are served grilled or fried and come topped with chipotle mayo and crispy fries. This is my home away from home. I've been coming to The Gin Mill for about 14 years. My cousin introduced me to this spot and I became hooked. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The ambiance is chill, dim lit. They have restaurant seating in the back if you want to bring your kids for a bite to eat. The best part...What bar do you know have happy hour from 11 am-7 pm?!? Not many! You can start a tab with a debit or credit card. All of the food is great but The wings are amazing!!! The morning/early afternoon crowd is mixed with older locals and some people on their lunch break will stop in for a bite and beer. The evening crowd is mixed but it's a lot of college students. If there's a game on, standing room only, so try and get there early. read more

This is a great neighborhood bar! It's a fun place to people watch, grab a drink with a friend, or just plan moving in together with your boyfriend (!!). We walked in a chill Saturday afternoon after grabbing Levain pastries down the street. We were looking to kill time before dinner and walked by this place. As we entered, we were greeted by the bar regulars who invited us to join them at the bar. The bartendress was a lovely lady who gave the down low on the specials and recommended a few drinks. We ordered a couple of beers that shocked us with the happy hour price, in a good way. The music was playing at a reasonable level, there were 2 games on, and it was just a really fun time. This place served as our happy hour meet after classes. We had just gotten done with a round of exams, and we were more than ready to unwind. The bar area on the ground has ample room, with seating along the entire stretch of the bar and enough floor space to not feel cramped. There is more seating toward the back of the bar, and there is some outdoor seating as well. The basement level is a bit smaller, but has tables for beer pong. Here is where everyone chose to congregate, so it was a bit hard getting around. Still, it was a good time playing beer pong with the classmates. This is a low-key sports bar on Amsterdam Ave in the UWS. Can't really complain about anything because my wife and I went for beer, and we were served beer in a prompt manner. I visited this bar during my trip to NY to watch my Heat play. Its a standard bar, no hostess so you seat yourself. It was pretty loud inside and there was a bouncer checking Id's at the door. We sat towards the back, asked them to put on the game and ordered a pitcher & artichoke spinach dip. On a Friday night there were no beer specials just a 5$ rum and energy drink shot [no thanks] The waitresses were pretty on point and were all sweet. Our pitchers were 20$ each and the spinach cheese dip was just OK. All in all for a bar to catch a game and throw down a pitcher (or 4) of beer this place is A-ok in my book read more
