I don't think I have ever been more uncomfortable in my life talking to a bartender than when I came here. I got out of work late one night, so I stopped here for a drink before walking home, the first hour was fine. The place was pretty busy for a Tuesday but around midnight the bartender started making quite racist remarks about the other patrons. The bartender is from Ireland, with a strong heavy accent, talking about how all of these working Spanish men and women drink at the bar don't belong there, how they should they should "stick to their own neighborhoods". He kept on mentioning how they get off work late and then they come here to get drinks and that he doesn't want to serve them. We are about 10 blocks from Harlem, so this would be their neighborhood. Besides being racist, this was ignorant as hell because he is also not a birthright citizen. This was one of the only times I've ever been ashamed of being Irish is when I heard this man speak. All of these people around me were having a good time and then tipping him. There was a group of 70 year-old white men scream singing Sinatra for over 20 mins and he didn't say a thing about them. read more

A lovely neighborhood bar in the middle of the upper east side. The bartenders are super attentive even when they're busy, the crowd is a little on the older side but it makes sense for the neighborhood that they're in. They also have a lot of TVs and play different games that are on. The only reason that this doesn't get given stars is because their wine tasted old (like the bottle had been open and left in the fridge for a while) but that's also my fault for ordering wine at a neighborhood bar-- I should know better lol. I've been meaning to write a review about this place for so long, that I'm ashamed that I'm so late with it. Carlow East has become my home away from home (so to speak) since 2020. I had gotten used to socializing at Crimson & Rye, but the pandemic killed the business (as well as my previous lifestyle). It was a different crowd than I had gotten used to, but eventually, it grew on me. My best friend was responsible for my going there and I've had some of the best times of my life at Carlow. I've been inviting family and friends there since 2021. My brother (who used to live on the Upper East Side like I did) comes from his home in Connecticut sometimes to get a drink or four. That's how special that place is. The drinks are reasonably priced, the bartenders are friendly, the owner is cool af, and their hostess is terrific! They're all like family to me. You'll definitely see some old faces there (not that there's anything wrong with that), but people who look like they're still in junior high school visit as well (they card, so don't take what I've said to mean that they let kids drink). It has a diverse crowd and I've been fortunate to have met people from all over the world at Carlow. I have a fascination for different languages and cultures, so this is a boon for me. Just before I wrote this review, I planned to go there tonight, and I invited a young lady to accompany me. One of the shots that I've uploaded here shows me, my best friend, and a gentleman known as Mr. Hayes. He was a regular who died recently. The reason that I mention him is to give you an idea of how good the atmosphere can be. Mr. Hayes was a pool shark. People would look at this old man and think they could beat him at the game. He would pretend to be feeble which made his opponents overconfident. That man racked up more wins than I can remember. LOL But he was family to the young and the old. Family! That's what it feels like every time I set foot in that pub. I don't mean to say that you'll have a good time every time, but that kind of thing is rare. If it does nothing for you the first time, come back and give it another go. I guarantee you'll come to love it. The aesthetics are pretty average and has what I assume most pubs have, but you don't go for the decor, you go for the experience. Bottoms up! read more

When my BF lived in NYC, this was the premiere location to catch a Seahawks game. So that's exactly what we did while visiting. I liked this place a lot. The bartender was really funny and I appreciated his "Don't like it? GTFO!" attitude. Several beers on tap and a full bar. No food but it's allowed to bring food in, so that's what we did as well. Flying across country for five and a half hours and to see fellow 12s on the other side of the country just made my heart swell. There were a ton of 12s in their jerseys and lots and lots of Seahawks decor in the bar, including the 12th Flag. My friends and I got beers here, and made friends with our bartender. He told us about how the place became a Seahawks bar, that they celebrate Blue Fridays and how crowded the place gets on Seahawks Sundays. YASSSS!!! I took a niners fan on Sunday for the last half of the game and he was DEFINTLY amazed that we had fans all the way in NYC. I think he had fun. We didn't drink because it was soooo packed. They don't have any food, but for the games they do have some catering, not always lots left, but its in the far back of the room. I use to live out this way and go every Friday if I could and it was always a great time. SEAHAWKS EAST My daughter was meeting me at Lexington and E 84th on the Upper East Side at one of her favorite watering holes. So I walk out of Penn Station watch a NYPD traffic officer taking his job a little to seriously picking on the cabbies and jump in an UBER. After a fun conversation with my driver about the World Cup I arrive join up with daughter and walk down Lex a short bit. There are plenty of bars in NYC however just one Carlow East a great neighborhood bar that happens to be one of only two Seahawks bars in the city. Turns out that here is the place to be on Seahawks game days with standing room only (ex SEA pats). Good call. Now I live in Seattle close to the Seahawks training center and am proudly a very big fan...a true 12. There is a huge 12 sign hanging from the ceiling with hundreds a Seahawks fan's signatures and another smaller by the front door. The bar is packed with Seahawks memorabilia including a autographed photo of Russell Wilson In the rear by the pool tables. Long time bartender Sean greeted us warmly and chatted us up being a true New Yorker accent and all. We ordered two PBRs and Sean served them up quickly nice and cold. I told Sean that I lived in Seattle here visiting my daughter for her birthday and would tell John Schneider (Seahawks GM) about Carlow East and the team support...thanks. We paid our tab and were headed to the Penrose (see review) our second hop down the street. Sean handed my daughter a Carlow East t shirt (small) for her birthday and was kind enough to include a slightly larger one for me (if I can get it back from my wife I'll be wearing it all over Seattle). When I moved from Seattle to New York City I was craving a community (particularly during football season) and let me tell you- this is the spot for Seattle folks (no bandwagon fans though, please). The way in which I describe this bar to my friends is the neighborhood bar where you recognize everyone, your favorite bartender knows your drink, and you can spend 4 hours of a Sunday cheering on the city that raised you. Below are the deets. Reviewing for: Community during Seahawks games Location: Upper eastside- this was always a commute but WORTH it for me. Food: none- grab some eats from somewhere else! Drinks: Game day specials are a thing- Pretty standard. Space: It's tight- during the peak of the season get here EARLY and grab a spot-which it's typically standing room only. Bathrooms are a struggle for my ladies. ***Pro tip: take a half time break, go across the street to Starbucks and grab a coffee and stop off at their restroom-it's probably faster and you get a quick caffeine boost! For a place that has no kitchen (read: no food), no coffee (read: no "adult" coffee drinks, like Nutty Irishman or Mexican coffee), or no champagne (no mimosas or Bellinis), I cannot wait to get back to this place. It's basically a bar and a pool table. I think I saw a video game in the back. Alas, this is a place that I will only stop at during football season. My husband always thought he was one in a million of Seattle Seahawks fans on the island of Manhattan, let alone all five boros or the tri-state area. But he read about this place and finally found a reason to visit -- a Seahawks game day. Though I am a Jets fan, I went with him...what the hell. We went in knowing that all this stuff was working against them...but Sundays they bring in a buffet (standard pasta, wings, salad, etc) and at same time are very chill about bringing in food of your own (we ordered from a local diner)...and though I couldn't get a mimosa or an adult coffee, the bartender was cool enough to suggest that if I went up the street for a regular coffee, he'd be happy to "nutty it up" for me, as he put it. Sweet. Ness. Anyway, I was an outsider, looking in, but this place is the shizzle for Seahawks fans on game days. Many of their games are not locally broadcast, so it's a haven for transplants and their fans. There was even a couple from Canada who are big 'Hawks fans. After each touchdown, they give you a complimentary Seahawk-blue Kamikaze shot. Damn, wish I was a Seahawks fan but they gave me the shots anyway. It was a high scoring game...so we got pretty drunk. I don't live on the UES, and to get there is like taking a trip to Guam where I need to stamp my passport, go through customs and declare my items. So this is a once in a blue moon place (no pun intended, for blue moons on Seahawk game days). But I had so much fun, as an outsider, that I can't wait for football season to start again. The Jets may break my heart, but I can secretly be impartial for a Seahawks game, while watching everyone around me have a blast at this place. Don't miss it. read more

We were in town during the Seahawks vs. Niners game, and at first we were a bit worried we'd have a hard time finding a good place to catch the game. The main concern was finding a place that would even turn it on with sound (not just CC), but a quick Google search revealed this place. As luck would have it, a friend visited NY the week prior and watched the Seahawks vs. Cardinals game, so he did all the recon for us. For the 3hrs we were there, it felt like we were back home at the local watering hole. Everyone had their Seahawks gear on--even the bartenders had on jerseys. People led chants and we celebrated every TD, INT, first down, etc... like we were tailgating outside the CLink. That was all good in and of itself, but Beecher's cheese happened to be there filming some promotional stuff, so they provided a free catered buffet. I know there are a few other bars that support the Hawks or are Seattle-friendly, but none can match Carlow East. This place is legit! read more

Worst ahole bartender ever. I got there on Aug 13 around noon to an empty bar. The bartender didn't even say hi and just said "what can I get you." Since didn't even offer the list of beers, I just said "hit me with your strongest IPA." He was really displeased that I was there. He took his time and he served me what I can consider the weakest Pilsen I've ever tasted. Then I tried to support the place by putting some money into the jukebox and he got super pissed and turned the volume mostly down while making jokes with one of the only other two customers. It looks like a there was a soccer game going on and he was bothered that we were there. At that point I chugged my beer, asked for the tab to be closed and left an F bomb as the tip. Had a conference in New York City that began on Sunday, January 11th--meaning I had to fly out on Saturday the 10th. Well that's fine. If I have to be out of town on a weekend, New York--even frigid New York--is a terrific place to be. Airline reservations - check. Hotel reservations - check. Conference reservations - check. I'm golden. What could possibly go wrong? Only the 2015 NFC Divisional Championship game. Oh snap. The 12th man doesn't fly during Seahawks playoff games! A moment of panic, a quick web search--good news--the game had an 8PM kickoff, four hours after arriving in NYC. There would be plenty of time to check-in at the hotel (see my Waldorf Astoria review: http://www.yelp.com/biz/waldorf-astoria-new-york-new-york?hrid=_bUYtuodGxDQlMg84vgxYQ) and head over to a bar to watch the game. But what bar? There are literally thousands in the city. As one would expect, Yelp provided the answer: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Seahawks+Bar&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY and the website for the NYC Seattle Seahawks Meetup Group confirmed it. "The official Seahawks bar in NYC is Carlow East, located on Lexington Ave between 84th and 85th. Come and watch all the Seahawks games on MULTIPLE flatscreens with FULL GAME AUDIO! Fast forward to the 10th. It's freezing in NYC--temperatures in the teens as I make my way to the Upper East Side. Forty-five minutes before kickoff and there's a line waiting to enter. Well that makes sense I suppose. There is an earlier game, after all. As that game ends a very few people start straggling out and the bouncer starts allowing new people in. "All the way to the back", he tells us. "That's the only area with room." As I enter I can't help but wonder what his definition of "room" is. Carlow East is quite literally the most crowded room I have ever been in. It is also one of the most energetic. There is green and blue EVERYWHERE. I get a beer and start visiting with people around me. Asking the question, "What's your connection to Seattle?" is enough to get a lively conversation going. There are business travelers like myself, ex-pats, students and a surprising number of people with no direct connection but who simply love the Seahawks. The game begins and I grab another beer. The guys behind the counter are busting their butts keeping the crowd lubricated. Over the next three hours-plus, they never slow down, never miss an order, never lose their patience. Short of the actual players on the field, these guys are the hardest working people in sports that day. The game starts off slow, but the crowd never doubts, never waivers. The energy is euphoric. The beer flows continuously and, while it's near impossible to move more than an inch or two in any direction there is no pushing, rudeness or antagonism. As the game enters the fourth quarter, it is impossibly tight with the Seahawks holding onto a four-point lead. Within seconds the Seahawks open up some breathing room with a field goal. A bit over four minutes later, they double the lead with a touchdown and four-plus minutes after that, another touchdown. Everyone at Carlow East is out of their minds. It is one of the most electric sports moments I have ever been a part of. And, although Carolina scores another touchdown with 2:34 left, that does nothing to dampen the celebration. As the game comes to an end, the crowd counts down the final ten seconds. A few locals climb onto chairs--or maybe they were tables, I couldn't really see--and leads everyone in a few cheers. Quickly though the bar starts to empty. It's around midnight now and the temperature outside is in the teens. No reason to put off the inevitable freeze. Still, as I head into the night and towards the subway, my heart is warm. Warm with the glow of a Seahawks victory and warm with the community that I met at New York City's greatest Seattle sports bar, Carlow East. read more

This place is full of racism, despite my color of skin if I'm having a drink and paying for it there's no reason to be rude.
