The Gin Mill is located on the corner of 81st and Amsterdam. I came here with my coworkers just a little while ago. When I walked in, I noticed it was mostly a younger crowd (21-30 max) and that the bar was very full. Mind you, it was only about 7. I met my party in the back who were already playing beer pong. I went to go order my drink: a Coney Island Pilsner. The bartender gave me my check and I couldn't believe what I saw: I only owed 4 dollars!! 4 dollars for a premium craft beer! These crazy prices continued for the next couple of hours and I was very pleased. My stomach, liver, and wallet were very happy! I got the chance to try the mozzarella sticks, nachos, buffalo wings, sliders and chicken fingers. Everything was pretty good, albeit it's typical bar food. We also got to try these sweet potato poppers with spicy cheese sauce that were so delicious! The waitress came around often to make sure we were taken care of. The Gin Mill is owned by the same people who operate Off the Wagon, Jake's Dilemma, 3 Sheets Saloon, Down the Hatch and many of the other welcoming dive bars that are in Manhattan. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm in the area. The cocktails looked good so I hope I can sample that soon too! read more

I've come here a couple times to watch sports events, most recently to watch a Sunday afternoon football game. We got there about an hour before the game so there was still a lot of available seating and it was easy to order some drinks. They don't have a large selection of beers or other drinks, but the plus side is that it's pretty cheap for New York! The place itself is just a typical sports bar; nothing that really stands out about it. They also have large a downstairs room that is a little nicer than the upstairs with more tables. By the time the game started the place got much more crowded, and we were happy we were able to snag some seats early on! It was harder to access the bar, but still not too bad. The atmosphere was fun and no one got too rowdy. Overall, this is a decent sports bar in the Upper West Side, and I would come back for another game! read more

This is a chained bar and I've visited all of them and would definitely recommend them. They have weekly deals on drinks, beer pong is available and of course my favorite part is the food which is always amazing. I come to this bar mostly during the week or on Sundays and I've tasted just about everything. The mac & cheese bites are definitely something I always get. Music is amazing and the service is also great, the bars may get packed but the waiters always come to make sure everything is okay. read more

One of those bars that you can frequent regularly and the staff knows you and it's your go-to place to hang and watch games and feel at home. Awesome place to watch sports because there are TVs all around and everyone gets into it together. There's a party space downstairs too, which also has a bar and TVs. Food is decent. They have an extensive menu. Tried the nachos, which were okay. Could've been bigger, better, and more full. Wings were good but a small portion. Love their chicken fingers. This is a great bar for sports fans and beer drinkers and locals, young and old alike. MOST IMPORTANTLY, you should know that this is a JETS bar. So leave your hankerings and accessories for other teams at home. There is a Jets helmet behind the bar and if you ask at random, you will find a ton of Jets' fans congregated here. The wooden bar, barstools and lighting have a Cheers effect, so most people play nice even if it can get a little loud when the mood strikes. The food is great and comes in large portions. Also important to note is that you can get your fill of TATER TOTS, nachos and other bar food. The two stall bathrooms are down the stairs by the party rooms. This is a swell place to host a laid back party (ie high school buddies, 21st birthday, etc). If you really feel like getting silly, feel free to let the bartender know that you want to play beer pong. This place holds so many good things, its pretty hard to list them all. The location is cozy and the service is nice and friendly. They card hard at the door so don't try any funny business and you should be more than fine. I always have a good time here. read more

We had our graduation party here in the Speakeasy Room on a Monday night. The staff was super helpful and friendly. We did an open bar special for $50 which included top-shelf liquor as well as 4 food options. We got the veggie pot-stickers, mac and cheese, Swedish meatballs, and chicken fingers. Everything was hot and delicious. We were also allowed to hook up own own music and use the beer pong tables they had. In addition, I saw some hook-up for projectors and screens. Staff was very accommodating and sat us relatively quickly. James was fantastic! He always checked on us periodically if we needed another round. Met with the owner and he was very nice as well. I felt safe because I saw every staff practicing covid19 safety guidelines. My burger was perfect and they made changes for me which was also accurately done! Thank you very much! It smelled like piss, the beer was warm, and I feared for my sanity when ex-frat boys in plaid shirts and girls in electric pink leggings started screaming over some lame 90s song. I love gin mill and its sisters but i felt very offended and discriminated becauae my friend had an altercation with a bartender name john who works at jakes awhile ago and hes banned. The altercation wasent even his fault. Soo even tho we got let in to gin mill he sent two bouncers to drag us out For what reason because he doesnt Like him very unprofessional if u ask me made me very uncomfortable and i felt discriminated by it. It's such a shame because I was really looking forward to going here for a friend's 21st birthday celebration, but my experience here was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING. First of all, the bouncers and management were so disrespectful and rude. My friend from North Dakota showed her drivers license to the bouncer and they denied it and said, and I QUOTE, "Nope. I don't like the way this id looks." This escalated into a scene outside the bar, which was extremely embarrassing for someone who is actually showing their real id and is 21! We asked the bouncer if we could talk to the manager, but he was even WORSE. He used an APP on his android to scan the id and later compared my friend's North Dakota id to pictures on GOOGLE!!! We were there for our friend's birthday who reserved the speakeasy room downstairs for a 3 hour open bar, but this whole ordeal lasted at least 35-45 minutes so it ate away our open bar time which cost us $40. The bouncers finally let my friend in, but as you could imagine our night was off to an awful start due to said altercations. The actual speakeasy room was nice but they only gave us 2 bartenders for our party of 40-50 people, one of which was in training. The service was slow, the drinks were weak, and they served majority of the drinks in plastic cups. Definitely not worth the $40. Overall, this place was a huge disappointment and I will never return to The Gin Mill after my experience. read more

I give the bars on Amsterdam a hard time, but Gin Mill has been pretty clutch for me on a number of occasions. Gin Mill is owned by the same people who run Jake's Dilemma and 13th Step (ick and icker), but unlike those two bars, I actually enjoy myself here. My notes: -I came here last night after a long hiatus. I think my last visit was around July 2014. I immediately recognized the bartender - we both went through one of those "you look familiar...do I know you? were you here before..." thought sequences. We both found it odd that we remembered a random weeknight from last summer, but I digress - nice to see a familiar face and a great bartender! Props, Travis. -There are always great specials here. The beer isn't great (Shock Top, Bud Light, Angry Orchard on tap...)but it's half of every night until 8 (so that would be $3 beers...not too shabby) and on Mondays, beers and shots are half off until close -Love coming here to watch games. The primary reason for my frequent visits last summer was the World Cup. Good luck finding a seat for an event like that, but the atmosphere was unbelievable. I've also been for the World Series and NBA Finals (both alone and with friends) and it's usually a great time. -This place can get fratty (a la 13th step - though to a much lesser degree), which I don't love. I didn't mind in college (shocker), but I'd avoid this place on college night (I think it's Thursday) if you're not into that. Otherwise, there's nothing notable about the crowd here. A bit older given the location, but otherwise nondescript. There's no mystique about this bar. They've got cheap beer and lots of TVs. I wouldn't suggest venturing to the UWS just for Gin Mill if you live downtown, but if you find yourself in the area, check it out! read more

Terrible Service I have never left a bad yelp review before, but this place has some of the worst service in the city. I went with a party of 7 to grab dinner and watch football on a Saturday night and finding a table was the only positive part of our experience. Our appetizer was brought out after our entrees. An order of fries was cold. An order was forgotten. The waitress was rude and made us feel like an inconvenience the whole time, especially when we tried to redeem the yelp offer for a free draft. Came here after the marathon and they were able to seat us right away (group of 6) which was great because it was packed for all the football games! Our waitress was awesome! We were able to get our beer and food orders to her quickly and she was very friendly in what I think of as a "high stress environment". She was extremely friendly too! Food is typical bar food (wings and pulled pork nachos were delicious) and on Sundays it is half price beer! I am not on the UWS often but it is a good spot to watch sports. read more

Great dive bar. The place is never crazy packed to where you have to squish yourself around, it never taken too long to get a drink, and they have a great selection of bar food. They also have areas where you can play beer pong, and TVs playing the sports channels all around. On some nights they have women from certain alcohol companies giving out free paraphernalia and playing games. No to mention that it's located in a great area with lots of nightlife going on -- you know what that means? Barhopping! All-in-all a great place, and a 5-star dive bar! ;) read more

Those happy hour deals... oh man. I was staying with a friend on the UWS and my coworker and I decided to grab a drink after work. It's definitely a local spot. It has the prices of a college bar but with better quality drinks. It's nice to stop into a place and not be overwhelmed by people or tourists. The happy hour specials make the bar really worth it. As other reviews have described, it's just a bar. It's a place with alcohol, table, and chairs. There's nothing special but there's something special about the vibe at the same time. Decent bar. Owned by the same guys that own Stumble Inn and Off the Wagon. Went here on a Wednesday for a friend's birthday and had a good time. There's like 2 tables outside and inside the place is pretty narrow so we did have to push through people in the bar area to get to the back where my friend had grabbed a few tables. There was one TV in the back that people were watching the soccer game on and a few along the bar area too. This place has tater tots which are my absolute fav and good happy hour specials. Pitches were half price so I think I spent $12 for a pitcher for our games of beer pong and flip cup. Not much more to this place than a neighborhood dive bar - very young clientele - including a young couple next to us pawing at each other and making out the entire time we were there - totally gross and inappropriate. The best thing about the place is that they have specials almost every weekday from 1/2 price whole bar to $14 pitchers. If you get a server who is absolutely amazing - ask her name is Megan. SO impressed with this place. There is really nothing amazing about this place that catches your eye. However what impressed me was the service we received upon entering the bar. I had just completed the breast cancer walk and my group was of 8. Half of my group was underage but we were starving and just wanted some good bar food. The owner/guy behind the bar was SUPER understanding and told us that we could eat but no liquor should be near the underage individuals of our party and we were able to stay. Aside from him, the food was amazing. I order the sloppy joe sliders which were so delicious and the sweet potato tator tots were AMAZING. The gin mill is the must-to-go bar of the neighborhood. Have some Amazing happy hours/ daily specials which makes it more attractive. Nice for late night drinks and after work meetings. The music is a hit or miss and their late night food, wings, are the typical bar food but good enough. You never can go wrong with the gin mill. Service pretty fast, it gets crowded from Moment to moment but you sure get to have a good time Whatever is that you're looking for. read more
