Came here on a Thursday for lunch at like 1:15. Place was mostly empty and service was pretty slow, didn't get waters until someone brought our meal but the pastrami was excellent. Parking was easy in the lot this time of day. I'd come back
This is one of my favorite porches in the world. Seriously. The food is always great. Just look at this sandwich! It's a go to visit in Saint Paul. It's stacks up nicely to Nashville-cuisine (and our food scene is pretty exceptional these days). Love our Selby Ave. Cheers!
The foods are always good every time we go there. Ambiance is a cozy neighborhood hangout. But tonight we had an amazing service from "Gabe". After sitting upstairs (velvet antlers) for 45 min with only water. We decided to came down and have our dinner at the gnome instead. Gabe hooked us up from beginning. We almost immediately forgot all about our problems and started counting our lucky stars. The icing on the cake is when we ordered dessert of peach crumbles and they're actually out of it. Gabe checked with the kitchen and the kitchen decided to make one from scratch. That is what I called "gold standard". Maybe upstairs can learn a thing or two from downstairs
We feel that The Gnome is usually 5 stars for us. This review is just for the Friday Fish Fry. We didn't want to give a bad rating for just the fish fry. The fish fry was only a 3 out of 5 for us. The service and overall experience is always a 5, but the fish fry lacked anything special. The fish was kind of a typical battered fish you find at a lot of places. It wasn't bad by all means, but it didn't stand out. It was AYCE, but just the fish. The fries were only a 1 time serving. Like we said, we didn't want to give a bad rating just because of the fish fry because we feel it's more of a one-off from their daily menu.
Went out for happy hour and was surprised they had such a great beer list! I had a Hazy IPA and really enjoyed it. The burger was also very good, but the tater tots didn't quite hit the spot. I don't think the pico de gallo was helping the dish, the flavors just weren't doing it for me. My friend got the tostadas and enjoyed her dish. I went with a group of three, and we all ended up parking on the street. The lot might be on the smaller side, but there were plenty of easy street spots nearby. The one downside was the noise, something about the space made it feel really loud, like it lacked sound control. That said, it's still a great spot on Selby with great service!

It's just not a great place to go if you're a vegetarian. We had tried to go out for brunch one day across the street, but it was closed so we diverted to the gnome. Although I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan, sometimes one doesn't have a choice so I had a salmon salad. It was very well prepared. I just wish there would been more options for me on the menu. I cannot speak highly enough about the staff, though. Excellent people.

Interesting atmosphere as part of the building was an old fire house from over a 100 years ago. We had solid service. Definitely would make it a stop again if back in St Paul
Man let me tell you about them cheese curds - Quality service, Quality establishment. I feel late to the bandwagon, as I've worked near this place for like decades but never checked it out. Even when I did, all I ate was curds....and I reckon that's all I needed. Unfortunately, I can't tell you about the rest of the menu. Fortunately, I can tell you about them CURDS. Get them
I haven't been in quite some time, partly because it's on the other side of the metro, and I haven't had time to make the trip. I am also surprised I have not posted a review of the Gnome. I am happy their menu is still awesome after the ownership change. I went there for lunch with the Mrs., and we split an appetizer and wings. Both were so enjoyable. 1. Pork belly wings--I would just eat these until I couldn't eat anymore! To my best estimation, they braised the pork belly until super tender, then battered it and deep-fried it into a crispy treat. It was the best thing I put in my mouth in quite a while! 2. the Steakhouse burger--I love horseradish, so if this is on anything, it is already most likely a winner. They made the burgers just perfect, with just a little pink in the middle. The combination of brisket and chuck made for almost a velvety burger. This is worth a look at if you are looking for a burger. Also, as usual, they guys always have a top-notch tap list! if you are in the area, it is the place to go
Went here via the Visit St. Paul Patio Passport program. We did sit on the patio. It was happy hour so it was kind of busy. I ordered the Spicy Pickle Dip, it was really good. I tried ordering something else and they didn't have it so the waiter talked me into ordering the Crunchy Chicken Sammie. It wasn't bad but I don't too much care for thigh meat and it was big and a bit messy. I would probably go back for brunch because I remember that being good. Otherwise that pickle dip was really good as well. The drinks were okay.
Decent beer, good food. Bustling bar, restaurant and patio seating. We all got something different but the cuban was the best.
Stopped in for a few beverages prior to our dinner reservation. I love that they have some NA options. The staff was very friendly.

Super cute patio! Check out the Saint Paul passport and make sure to get your points! Got a Downeast cider and a tropical drink. Both were good! Side of fries were really good! The perfect amount of crisp, no sauce needed! Revisit to the Gnome and sadly the quality is down. My Manhattan that I enjoyed last time was not as good. It was served with a bright red maraschino cherry and I truly missed the high-end cocktail cherries that usually come with such an expensive and special cocktail ($16). It should come with Amarena or Luxardo but not what it was served with. Also!! We went on a Friday during lent for the fish fry and it was underwhelming. The fish looked like fish sticks from the freezer. They didnt seem like freshly battered fried fish. My friends was very thin and he was bummed. read more

Salty and overcooked were the theme for this meal. This was our first time here. We came before a MN United game. 3/5 We got the spicy pickle dip to start. It was spicy. The chips were very salty as well. 2/5 Popcorn shrimp. These were good for what they were. They definitely needed the squeeze of lemon on top to add some flavor. 1/5 Craft burger. Very overcooked. Dry. Flavorless. Fries were overcooked and salty. 1/5 Steakhouse burger. Hardly any bleu cheese. No pickled onion as noted on menu. Overcooked, dry and flavorless as well. Service was slow. Appetizer came out pretty quick but entrees took forever. Parking is tricky. We got lucky and got the last spot in the parking lot but the area is busy and its congested around there. Next time we come down for a soccer game, we won't be coming here. read more

This was a fun little spot. My co-worker picked it when we were on a business trip. I'm sure he wanted to go to try unusual beers give. Their reputation for having so much on tap. I was along for food...and have to say... it didn't disappoint! While the thought of spam fries grossed me out... they were awesome! Definitely something to try! But the elote Mac was something special. Soooo good! I added salmon but they accidentally brought it with?? Chicken?? So they brought me a piece of beautifully cooked salmon on the side. In truth... the max was so large, rich and filling... I really ate hardly any of the salmon. The place is also lovely inside. Nice big windows. It feels open and airy even when it's busy. And it's in a great spot for strolling before or after. Service was ok. I think our waiter had a lot going on so getting attention for additional drinks (or to mention the chicken/salmon mix up) was a little challenging. But not horrific or anything. read more

Any pub that has half price happy hour whenever there's a game playing automatically gets at least four stars. Throw in a great atmosphere, trendy, cool, happy hour eats like popcorn, shrimp, spicy pickle dip, brussels sprouts, or a giant pretzel ring plus a great selection of draft beers is a win-win-win. The pretzel ring was huge and excellent. The Drummies made chicken wings look like tiny toys. They had an awesome sirracha plum sauce on them. We went to get something to eat between lunch and dinner. We were seated quickly. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. I got a pineapple coconut fizz and my husband got the house beer. My drink was delicious and my husband really likes that particular beer. We ordered spicy pickle dip for an appetizer and I needed water but some people might not think it was quite that spicy. I had the gnome cap mushroom which I really liked and my husband had the macaroni and cheese which had a good amount of sauce. We liked the gnome theme. There is seating inside and on a patio. I always come back to the gnome! They have an excellent patio with tons of space, which is always my favorite place to sit. They do change up their menu quite a bit, so I'm always trying new foods and drinks. I have never had something I didn't like though! Service is always attentive and warm. read more
How fun does a Beer Battle Dinner sound? Let me tell you it was a blast! Schells Brewing vs Montgomery Brewing with a Turkish themed menu. Each course is paired with a beer chosen by each brewer with a fun twist of not knowing which beer is from which brewer. Vote for your favorite pairing after each course and at the end of the night the winner is tallied. I was impressed listening to the chefs discuss their vision for this menu from first hand accounts they took from visiting the region. Making that real connection to such a unique cuisine added a depth to the experience. After each course the brewers discussed why they chose their pairing of beer which was interesting since a few courses they chose completely different styles. Brewers and chefs kept it short and simple which kept the event running smoothly and never felt prolonged or a sense of dragging out which could easily happen with five courses and ten beers! Event was masterfully presented for such a large group with an extensive set up. I imagine a Turkish themed menu is hard to pull off given the vast array of spices in play but was wonderfully done. The only miss from our table was the dessert course of rice pudding we just couldn't make the flavor/consistency connection but nonetheless it was a great night and Congratulations to Montgomery Brewing for the WIN read more

I saw that the Gnome Craft Pub had released their new menu for the season and ran over to try out a few items. If you haven't been to the Gnome, it is one of Brian & Sarah Ingram's ventures as part of Purpose Restaurants - which donates 3% of all sales to neighbors in need. They are able to support the community at large, while also producing some of the best food the Twin Cities has to offer. To drink, we both went with DDH Pseudo Sue from Toppling Goliath. The pleasant bitterness and citrus notes went well with the multiple dishes we ordered. It was extremely hard to pick since The Gnome had 46 beers on tap and a phenomenal cocktail list with signature cocktails ranging from Tiki Drinks to creative Old Fashioneds which you can get in a flight. To start, we went with The Crunchy Gentleman which were Crinkle Cut Fries topped with Top the Tater Bechamel Sauce, Crispy Summer Sausage, Giardiniera, and Chives. Don't get me started on these fries. Perfectly crisp with a fluffy interior that held up the the bechamel sauce. The sausage was umami packed with beautiful acidity from the Giardiniera that brought the dish together. For our mains we split two of their dishes. Chicken Fry Sammie: A crunchy 14-Spice Fried Chicken Thigh topped with Hot Honey, Jalapeno-Bacon Aioli, House Pickles, Butter Lettuce and served with more of the amazingly spiced and perfect crinkle cut fries. The chicken was moist and fried crunchy with just enough aioli that it wasn't drowning but filled your taste buds with all the flavors you need. The bun held up wonderfully and the pickles were a nice acidic add with crispy lettuce that gave a burst of freshness. Slow Belly & Drunken Noodles: Slow Roasted Orange Pork Belly laid on top of a Spicy Wheat Noodles, Shiitake Mushrooms, Ginger, Celery, Scallion, & Lime Zest. The pork was the star of the show and I could have eaten a bowl of just hit. Crisp on the outside, melt delicious on the inside. It was some of the best pork belly I have had in a LONG time. The noodles had a great level of heat with mushrooms bringing earthiness that brought the noodles and meat together into a harmonious marriage of a dish. We came here on a Friday night for dinner, had no issues getting last minutes reservations. Servers and staff were super nice and helpful. We sat in the bar area, table are a little tight for 4 people but we made it work. We started with some popcorn shrimp, so good! We were super impressed with this, some of the best popcorn shrimp I have had. For entrees, I got the tiger shrimp pasta dish, it was very flavorful and delicious. They shrimp were cooked well and the portion was generous. Others got the walleye, beast burger, and the chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was really flavorful too! And the fries were super yummy too. We ended with some beignets, they were good, very rich. I couldn't eat more than one. Overall a very good meal, very reasonable prices, and pretty fast service. read more
Went for a friend's birthday drag brunch and it was really fun! Sat upstairs for the event and it's a good layout but nothing special. Got the spicy bloody and chicken and waffles and none of it disappointed. The waffles had a very grainy brown sugar syrup on them so if sweet is your thing instead of savory, then that's a clear winner! The service was pretty decent for it being so busy but I had to ask for a water refill twice before they actually refilled it over the course of about 30 minutes. Other than that though, no complaints and I'll probably be back to try something else! read more

This space deserves soooo much better. I've given it so many tries. The food -and- service are terrible. It took 20 minutes to get two beers. Ordered the $25 pretzel and the cheese sauce had clearly been sitting in the window for a long time. Inedible. I was actually in disbelief about how bad the tacos were. The corn tortillas hadn't so much as grazed a flat top; they were cold, and broke in half the second we tried to pick them up. Tacos are tough to mess up, and they failed. Hard. The batter on the fish was flavorless. Had to ask for waters (we were on the patio) and we never got refills. I gave mine to my dog because nobody brought her a dish, and I never got an opportunity to ask because nobody was checking in! I won't be back, sadly. I used to LOVE it here. I can't recommend it anymore. read more

The Gnome has been one of my go-to restaurants for a while, it's the perfect spot for a work happy hour or casual dinner out. they have something everyone will love, a great drink menu, and friendly service. Everything is super affordable as well! This past visit we got the Brussels sprouts, crispy chicken sandwich, and wild beast burger. Everything was perfectly cooked and super flavorful. The caramel snickerdoodle martini was so tasty (almost like a dessert)! read more

Server was wonderful. Coconut rice was delicious (kinda desserty) and the drinks were good. The stuffed shroom was meh. Harissa is too strong and it was supposed to have cauliflower mixed in with the couscous but didn't see any. Wouldn't get that again. read more

I really wished this place was as good as the place looks but it was the opposite. I looked at the reviews once we sat down but decided to give it a try still. Once I saw the menu I knew that the food was not going to be as good. All it comes down to is the menu is having an identity crisis. You have American food, Thai dishes, wanting to be "authentic" Mexican food, French and others that just don't make sense. I hope this place can maybe focus on one style of food and just create a menu from that. The burger was okay but it was not pleasant to see how pink it was on the inside because of the picture of pork the patty had. The chicken sandwich was ok but nothing I would order again. I do hope this restaurant can change their menu because they do have an awesome patio and I would love to check it out again when the food makes better sense read more
