It was served with a bright red maraschino cherry and I truly missed the high-end cocktail cherries that usually come with such an expensive and special cocktail ($16). We feel that The Gnome is usually 5 stars for us. This review is just for the Friday Fish Fry. We didn't want to give a bad rating for just the fish fry. The fish fry was only a 3 out of 5 for us. The service and overall experience is always a 5, but the fish fry lacked anything special. The fish was kind of a typical battered fish you find at a lot of places. It wasn't bad by all means, but it didn't stand out. It was AYCE, but just the fish. The fries were only a 1 time serving. It's hard for me to write the gnome because I loved its predecessor the happy known and that even earlier predecessor Chango o'hara is so much. This current reincarnation is fine. It's just not a great place to go if you're a vegetarian. We had tried to go out for brunch one day across the street, but it was closed so we diverted to the gnome. Although I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan, sometimes one doesn't have a choice so I had a salmon salad. It was very well prepared. I just wish there would been more options for me on the menu. Went out for happy hour and was surprised they had such a great beer list! I had a Hazy IPA and really enjoyed it. The burger was also very good, but the tater tots didn't quite hit the spot. I went with a group of three, and we all ended up parking on the street. The lot might be on the smaller side, but there were plenty of easy street spots nearby. I am happy their menu is still awesome after the ownership change. I went there for lunch with the Mrs., and we split an appetizer and wings. Both were so enjoyable. 1. Pork belly wings--I would just eat these until I couldn't eat anymore! To my best estimation, they braised the pork belly until super tender, then battered it and deep-fried it into a crispy treat. It was the best thing I put in my mouth in quite a while! 2. the Steakhouse burger--I love horseradish, so if this is on anything, it is already most likely a winner. They made the burgers just perfect, with just a little pink in the middle. The combination of brisket and chuck made for almost a velvety burger. Went here via the Visit St. Paul Patio Passport program. We did sit on the patio. It was happy hour so it was kind of busy. I ordered the Spicy Pickle Dip, it was really good. I tried ordering something else and they didn't have it so the waiter talked me into ordering the Crunchy Chicken Sammie. How fun does a Beer Battle Dinner sound? Let me tell you it was a blast! Schells Brewing vs Montgomery Brewing with a Turkish themed menu. Each course is paired with a beer chosen by each brewer with a fun twist of not knowing which beer is from which brewer. Vote for your favorite pairing after each course and at the end of the night the winner is tallied. I was impressed listening to the chefs discuss their vision for this menu from first hand accounts they took from visiting the region. Making that real connection to such a unique cuisine added a depth to the experience. After each course the brewers discussed why they chose their pairing of beer which was interesting since a few courses they chose completely different styles. Brewers and chefs kept it short and simple which kept the event running smoothly and never felt prolonged or a sense of dragging out which could easily happen with five courses and ten beers! Event was masterfully presented for such a large group with an extensive set up. I imagine a Turkish themed menu is hard to pull off given the vast array of spices in play but was wonderfully done. The only miss from our table was the dessert course of rice pudding we just couldn't make the flavor/consistency connection but nonetheless it was a great night and Congratulations to Montgomery Brewing for the WIN read more

I saw that the Gnome Craft Pub had released their new menu for the season and ran over to try out a few items. If you haven't been to the Gnome, it is one of Brian & Sarah Ingram's ventures as part of Purpose Restaurants - which donates 3% of all sales to neighbors in need. They are able to support the community at large, while also producing some of the best food the Twin Cities has to offer. To drink, we both went with DDH Pseudo Sue from Toppling Goliath. The pleasant bitterness and citrus notes went well with the multiple dishes we ordered. It was extremely hard to pick since The Gnome had 46 beers on tap and a phenomenal cocktail list with signature cocktails ranging from Tiki Drinks to creative Old Fashioneds which you can get in a flight. To start, we went with The Crunchy Gentleman which were Crinkle Cut Fries topped with Top the Tater Bechamel Sauce, Crispy Summer Sausage, Giardiniera, and Chives. Don't get me started on these fries. Perfectly crisp with a fluffy interior that held up the the bechamel sauce. The sausage was umami packed with beautiful acidity from the Giardiniera that brought the dish together. For our mains we split two of their dishes. Chicken Fry Sammie: A crunchy 14-Spice Fried Chicken Thigh topped with Hot Honey, Jalapeno-Bacon Aioli, House Pickles, Butter Lettuce and served with more of the amazingly spiced and perfect crinkle cut fries. The chicken was moist and fried crunchy with just enough aioli that it wasn't drowning but filled your taste buds with all the flavors you need. The bun held up wonderfully and the pickles were a nice acidic add with crispy lettuce that gave a burst of freshness. Slow Belly & Drunken Noodles: Slow Roasted Orange Pork Belly laid on top of a Spicy Wheat Noodles, Shiitake Mushrooms, Ginger, Celery, Scallion, & Lime Zest. The pork was the star of the show and I could have eaten a bowl of just hit. Crisp on the outside, melt delicious on the inside. It was some of the best pork belly I have had in a LONG time. The noodles had a great level of heat with mushrooms bringing earthiness that brought the noodles and meat together into a harmonious marriage of a dish. This space deserves soooo much better. I've given it so many tries. The food -and- service are terrible. It took 20 minutes to get two beers. Ordered the $25 pretzel and the cheese sauce had clearly been sitting in the window for a long time. Inedible. I was actually in disbelief about how bad the tacos were. The corn tortillas hadn't so much as grazed a flat top; they were cold, and broke in half the second we tried to pick them up. Tacos are tough to mess up, and they failed. Hard. The batter on the fish was flavorless. Had to ask for waters (we were on the patio) and we never got refills. I gave mine to my dog because nobody brought her a dish, and I never got an opportunity to ask because nobody was checking in! I won't be back, sadly. I used to LOVE it here. We came here on a Friday night for dinner, had no issues getting last minutes reservations. Servers and staff were super nice and helpful. We sat in the bar area, table are a little tight for 4 people but we made it work. We started with some popcorn shrimp, so good! We were super impressed with this, some of the best popcorn shrimp I have had. For entrees, I got the tiger shrimp pasta dish, it was very flavorful and delicious. They shrimp were cooked well and the portion was generous. Others got the walleye, beast burger, and the chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was really flavorful too! And the fries were super yummy too. We ended with some beignets, they were good, very rich. I couldn't eat more than one. Went for a friend's birthday drag brunch and it was really fun! Sat upstairs for the event and it's a good layout but nothing special. Got the spicy bloody and chicken and waffles and none of it disappointed. The waffles had a very grainy brown sugar syrup on them so if sweet is your thing instead of savory, then that's a clear winner! The service was pretty decent for it being so busy but I had to ask for a water refill twice before they actually refilled it over the course of about 30 minutes. When we got to this place, we stated that we had a reservation upstairs. The server gave us a confused look, saying that they had our reservation and they were just going to speak to the manager. That took 3-4 minutes. Shortly, another server walked us upstairs to our table. When we arrived, there were about 6 TVs and only one other couple. We found this odd since we went for the Vikings Packers December game, and they advertised it as a sports bar. A little before the game started, we noticed that one of the TVs was frozen with the spinning circle. This happened more. We also had some sound problems where we couldn't hear it, just watching it. Soon, the manager came up saying that the Internet is down, not just for the restaurant but for the area around it. No compensation was given. No "sorry about that" was said. Instead, we just left. What was also weird was that in the downstairs bar, there were only 2 TVs, and you had to turn your neck in a really awkward position. Another noticing, when we were ordering our meals, the server almost walked away before we were done ordering. Moral of the story: good food, not good for sporting events. read more

The Gnome was a great place for a Sunday night friend outing! The atmosphere feels welcoming and has its own charm. Perfect for groups of 4 or smaller, although they had one bigger table. I had the chili with the squash bowl which was the perfect pairing - I will definitely be back to have it again. The location is perfect for a dinner and a walk, or shopping and some lunch. The overall cost is respectable for the quality of food and service. Parking is available but most likely fills quickly during peak hours. I really wished this place was as good as the place looks but it was the opposite. I looked at the reviews once we sat down but decided to give it a try still. Once I saw the menu I knew that the food was not going to be as good. All it comes down to is the menu is having an identity crisis. You have American food, Thai dishes, wanting to be "authentic" Mexican food, French and others that just don't make sense. I hope this place can maybe focus on one style of food and just create a menu from that. The burger was okay but it was not pleasant to see how pink it was on the inside because of the picture of pork the patty had. The chicken sandwich was ok but nothing I would order again. I do hope this restaurant can change their menu because they do have an awesome patio and I would love to check it out again when the food makes better sense read more

I would give a zero stars if allowed. We sat for 25 minutes after brought to our table...waiting for service . The Waitress waited on two tables sat 10 minutes after us, ignoring us... she then came over dropped waters.. didn't acknowledge us and left. We sat for 10 more minutes. Addressed the issue with the host who didn't seem bothered by this. We left. As a former waitress, quality service would be a factor if most customers return. While the food looked incredible, we will never know. My husband refuses to go back. I will be contacting Purpose Restaurants to get the a mount of my gift card reimbursed. read more
