Donut review only-- Pros and cons both. Ordinary, for the most part. The cake donuts are serviceable, to be polite, but nothing that makes you go "oh!." The yeast donuts are good. Not dry, just moust enough and a good balance if sweetness. The kreulers...not THAT elicits an "oh!." It seems so rare to come a kreuler that's not either soaked in sugar or bland as heck. I wanted to like this place. I love to support local independent shops. Unfortunately as soon as I walked in I didn't feel welcomed. This is around 12:40pm on Thursday, the downtown area wasn't very busy. Two ladies working in the back, looked up at me and didn't even say anything. There was only one other customer there and she was only looking around. I needed some bread for some olive oil I had just purchased. I waited at the counter and neither lady came to ask if I didn't anything. After about 5 minutes, one of the ladies asked the other lady if she asked if I needed help. Which she said "no". The lady finally comes over and I place my order. She prepares to box it up. I go look in their display to see if there was anything else I wanted. Ended up getting French bread, chocolate eclairs and 2 dozens cookies. They had a special on cookies - buy one dozen get second dozen for a dollar. I would have bought more but the atmosphere wasn't very friendly so I left with what I had. Will not be comeback. read more

My guy loves there big cinnamon rolls but they were out today. We split a farmers omelette. Whole wheat toast. The wait was the longest we have ever seen. The cook was totally overwhelmed. Been a while since being here early enough for donuts, but do enjoy the pastries and bread. Cookies are a little dry for my taste. Cafe does offer different specials daily for quick breakfast/lunch. Order in the cafeteria line and then grab a seat. COVID measures still have distanced tables, disposable plates and utensils. As we walked on the other side of the street their big sign caught our eye about a caught a deal for 1 cent We dropped by to check out what their big sign was all about cookies dozen cookies for 1 penny. Upon closer review it was actually buy a dozen and get a second. We thought the a 2 dozen cookies would have been too much so we just grabbed 3-4 cookies. The cookies were the dryer brittle kind. I enjoyed my peanut butter cookie, but it was not that great. Heard they have another location in another town as well. Maybe the cookies are not their top feature - there didn't seem to be that much inventory the day we were there, it was afterall off-season on a weekend so not too busy. read more

Loved Golden Brown bakery. We visited twice during our 5 day visit to South Haven. Staff was very friendly and there were so many treats to be had! We tried numerous donuts and treats and everything was delicious! It also saved pretty well as we bought extra on our last day and brought the extra home and had them for two more days. Cute spot inside as well, but go early or be prepared for a long line. The line moves quickly but if you want specific items make sure to get in when they open. read more

The bakery is wonderful - great selection every day! Doughnuts, muffins, scones, etc. The dining room is adjacent to the front room where the bakery is, and it's really claustrophobic. Went there a few times in the summer and it was hot and uncomfortable in there. I asked a server if they could do anything about the temperature (it didn't feel like there was any air conditioning, and this was July), and she said no. Breakfast/food is cafeteria style. Only workers in dining room collect dishes and wipe tables. They aren't always very friendly. read more

We visited this bakery and cafe four years ago and it was amazing! We were passing through again so we stopped for omelettes and bakery items. Everything is as good as it was the last time we were there! My husband must have gluten free items and they have wonderful gluten free cake doughnuts, cupcakes and brownies, as well as non-gluten free favorites. Make sure you try this place if you're anywhere close to South Haven! We'd drive 100 miles out of our way to go there again, it's that great! Yummy!!! read more

Ate brunch at their cafe bc my opinion USED to be that it's hard to screw up breakfast. I ordered the large biscuits and gravy for $9. I'd hate to see what the "small" is because I got 1.5 of the absolute THINNEST biscuits I've ever seen! It was more like pizza crust. Had zero flavor. Bacon was decent but I paid $5 for that side of bacon. The cashier was insanely unfriendly and couldn't answer basic questions like "where can I find silverware". She ended up just telling me to "just go get some plasticware over there". We were dining IN. It took 32 minutes to get food after ordering. Service is so slow and it wasn't crowded. It wasn't a very clean place. I don't know how this place is in business and I'm giving 2 stars ONLY bc the food sustained life. read more

We had been to this bakery once before, but I forgot to write a review. This time we ordered some of the sprinkle cookies, some of their other cookies and a couple of brownies. The sprinkle cookies were great in flavor. Very buttery. The other cookies (variety of Dutch Almond, Choc PB, Butterscotch, Almond Walnut Choc Chip). They were good, but crunchy, if you are looking for a soft cookie, these are not it. The cream cheese brownie was not our favorite, it was a very fudgy texture with walnuts and a cream cheese frosting, but the flavor was just ok. The cookie dough was really good though. Alot more flavor and huge chunks of cookie dough on the top. Last time we went there, we ate lunch and I believe it was really good, but unfortunately don't remember the specifics. We also had some pastries and they were also very good. Definitely worth a try. read more

Customer service sucks so bad the few employees the place can keep are so rude and disrespectful. I'm honestly surprised the place is even still open with the lack of sanitary practices. Food is subpar at best. Just because a restaurant has been in a location for decades doesn't mean its any good. Definitely do not recommend to even my least favorite people. read more

Donuts are a vacation tradition for us, so when I headed out on a run on a cool, overcast morning, and passed by this cute little bakery, I decided to grab a dozen doughnuts for the kids. I picked out chocolate iced, sprinkles, white iced w chocolate squiggly designs, and some caramel cinnamon donuts. Several physicians with whom I worked used to routinely go to eat lunch at this bakery. They said the food was simple and inexpensive and it tasted good. So, hearing that, when I had a chance to accompany them I did. I went with them about a dozen times over 10 years. And, as they said, the food was simple and inexpensive and it tasted good. But it was nothing out of the ordinary. And following the basic rule that a restaurant to catch my eye has to be able to make food better than I could - well, I could make a grilled cheese sandwich that was as good or better, and I could make a Sloppy Joe as good or better, and I could make a Chicken Salad Wrap as good or better. And so could lots of other restaurants. So, my reaction was "Okay" (shrug). The bakery part is always a mixed bag. I like the donuts and pastries. I find the cookies to be sugary and dry. Colleagues brought to the office sheet cakes from the bakery to celebrate happy occasions like birthdays and weddings. And my reaction afterwards, after I ate a slice, was always "Okay" (shrug)(icing sugar headache an hour later). Be careful off season. South Haven is, like many beach communities, alive in the summer and dead the rest of the time. So bakery products don't move as quickly off season, which means that eclair you buy today was probably not made today. The bakery has a great location downtown. The place has been around longer than anyone can remember. The interior is probably unchanged since the 50's. The place is an institution - but like many institutions the drive to be something innovative or the best at something is gone. read more

The lady in the bakery side wasn't very friendly though when I had questions about their selections available.
