We were big fans of the Phoenix Cafe and even bigger fans of Chalboard Kitchen. We stopped in this weekend for lunch. I had the best BLT. The bacon in the sandwich is unreal and the lettuce and tomato were both fresh. I upgraded to fries and they were really good crinkle cut style. My husband got the Brisket Breakfast and loved every bit of it. He upgraded to the biscuit and literally I will be back for the biscuit basket. There are so many things on the menu we look forward to trying when we are in town. Two down sides, they need to be open for dinner and an espresso machine would be a nice addition! before ever taking a look at the menu, our waitress asked us if we wanted to start off with their donuts, making it seem like it was what they offered as complimentary. We said yes thinking it was one of their offering (we are in town for a wedding so we don't know the place at all). when we finally looked at the menu, we noticed donuts for $12 on there!! Then when we asked if we would have to pay for it, she told us yes. Knowing we get a sweet treat on every breakfast date, I said no big deal and asked if we could get these pancakes instead of the donuts since we looked at the menu and saw what they had to offer! Came to South Haven to run an errand and decided to stop in here for breakfast. The staff were friendly and the menu mentioned they had recently moved into this new location. The decor is very farmhouse modern with a lot of white washed panels. The breakfast was really good and came out hot and fresh! Delicious breakfast spot in heart of charming South Haven! The staff was so friendly and made us laugh. Their menu has a lot of vegetarian stuff and also vegan (vegan eggs, tofu, etc). I ordered their avocado toast with smashed potatoes and my husband ordered their veggie scramble with potatoes. The space was so huge and inviting - I'm guessing they used to be on Phoenix Street but needed more space so now they're on Broadway. Either way the potatoes stole the show. So so good and crispy! Since our last visit a few years ago, Phoenix Street has moved to a new location. Love the architectural details of this restored older building. Clean and modern inside. The drawback: it is LOUD. The place is hopping (good for their success and a sign of an appreciated community eatery) and with that comes lots of people, movement and conversation. For my preferences, the stimulation detracts from the ambiance. Next time, I'll try outside seating. We were greeted quickly and placed on a waitlist. Given the number of people, the wait list moves quickly. The staff at Phoenix Street is efficient. They work hard and keep moving. With this efficiency comes a lack of personal connection. We wanted to ask about the live and the new billing, but there was literally not a moment for any tangential conversation. Our server was polite, but gave all the nonverbals of "I don't want to talk."' Once we were seated, our order was taken and our food arrived, we didn't see much from the staff. An improvement in customer connection would go a long way in making this good eatery excellent. Our memory of past visits in the older, dated building included time to chat with staff and a much more comfy, homey feel. Miss that environment. Our food arrived in a timely manner. It looked and smelled wonderful. Large portions prepared well and plated nicely. Much like our memory do previous visits, Phoenix Street serves up excellent food. Menu prices are steep, but comparable to other waterfront, vacation-oriented communities. We would definitely return. Perhaps off-season, the vibe will settle down. read more

This place is SO close to being my go-to restaurant. Food is excellent! Service is excellent! Atmosphere I love! However, it has the MOST expensive beer on tap that I have ever seen. I would love to come here routinely for lunch and a beer but I can NOT stomach that price for beer, even domestics. read more

Stopped in for a weekday brunch. Lovely old converted church with great character. Not terribly busy, but several tables filled up after we arrived. I had the bagel with lox, wife had French toast. Service was attentive. Both dishes came out reasonably quickly and everything was delicious. Bagel was loaded with avocado, capers, bean sprouts, and a generous pile of salmon. Easy to find location but with very limited parking. You may have to park on the side street as we did along with 10 or so other cars. We arrived at approx. 9:45 AM on a Monday and had to wait approximately 20 minutes to get a table. Server and Waitress were very accommodating. The inside was nice, and the majority of the tables are in a large open room. The large open room is fairly noisy as others have mentioned, it makes having table conversations a bit difficult. The food? Decent but lackluster I ordered the Phoenix Street Breakfast. Scrambled eggs were good, white toast with butter was solid but my bacon did taste like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite some time. Portions of my bacon were overly crisp. Wife's avocado toast was decent but had far too many onions incorporated in it. We also weren't fans of the coffee served here.
