I stopped into the Good Fork with some friends on Tuesday looking for a bite and a good time. We came to the right place! We took a seat at the bar and were greeted by the most charming bartender, Josh. He made us feel right at home and recommended the fish and chips. I was a little hesitant because the fish and chips is not traditional, but i trusted this man with my life. Let me tell you- i will never question smashed fingerlings ever again! In addition we got curry fries which was a zesty treat. And plenty of delicious wines. I loved the lambrusco and that guinness pour was one of the best in the city. I returned to the Good Fork after a multi year gap and was both surprised and sorely disappointed with the brunch offerings. This used to be my favorite place in Red Hook in the summer months, but everything was off the mark on a recent visit. Don't sit in the backyard unless you want to be devoured by mosquitos. The blood orange margarita is one of the worst drinks I've had in recent memory...unpleasantly sour, unbalanced, flavorless. The watermelon margarita was good. The curry fries were tasty but mostly tiny pieces with just a few nice long fries. The breakfast hash was meh. The broccoli tempura is really the best thing we had. The smash burger is a greasy grizzled disappointment. It's basically a fast food patty "flattened", overcooked and drowned in cheese, onion and pickles with a heavy mayonnaise based sauce. There isn't waiter service here. You're given a bar code and you send in the order and the food is dropped and cleared. No opportunity to ask a question or get a recommendation. You also need to fetch your own silverware, drinking water, etc. There's a reason this place was sparsely occupied while The Red Hook tavern was overly packed. We won't return. read more

The best thing we ever did was miss the IKEA ferry back to Manhattan and stumbled upon this gem, tucked away near the waterfront. They have only been opened six weeks since this writing and the locals were pouring in on a Saturday afternoon in the last week of august, while everyone else was heading out of town. The drinks and conversations were familiar and welcoming and you could tell this place will be the place to be in the coming weeks with years ahead. There is outside seating as charming and cozy as the bar inside. We did not have time to dine, but checking out the kitchen and seeing how everything was moving like a flock of starlings in fall, I have no doubt the menu is delicious. The Good Fork .. was a pleasant discovery I made while driving in the area. It looked so cozy and homey, I hopped on yelp to check out the menu (it was fit my taste buds!). I was seated in a cozy booth in the corner with my boyfriend which I really appreciated! What we ordered: dumplings, steak & egg korean style, and the roasted free-range chicken. I highly recommend the steak & egg korean style cooked medium rare. I love any kind of steak but you can tell a steak is amazing when it's buttery and flavor radiates off of it. Thats how the steak is at The Good Fork. I almost ordered another one! This entree is paired with a salad of apples and greens which tartness balanced out the savory. The kimchee fried rice was okay, not too impressionable, but the steak definitely made up for it. As for the roasted free-range chicken, the meat was tender and NOT DRY. I really enjoyed the potato parsnip mash which help accentuate the chicken's flavor. But the steak is still the overall winner! For dessert, we ordered Steve's Key Lime pie. I've actually tried Steve's Key Lime pie at a food market before but somehow it tasted even better this time. I thought it was really cute they shaped the cream into a lime and presented it on top of the slice. 10/10. The service at The Good Fork is pretty good and I have no complaints. The atmosphere is very warm and intimate. Came here on a whim because I was near the area and hungry. It so happened to be just right before the restaurant opened for dinner. The lovely hostess was gracious and seated us before they began serving. I shared the chive dumplings, mussels in coconut milk and my date had the pappardelle with ragu. The food was good. I'm used to excellent dumplings having grown up in flushing, queens, so I had high expectations. I appreciated the taste of the dumpling wrapper, but the filling was not outstanding. Still good, though. This place is pretty popular. Once we entered the restaurant, at least 4 groups came in after us. Reservations aren't required, but are highly recommended. read more

Came here the other night with some friends for dinner. It's a cute restaurant! Since we came on a random cold Tuesday night the restaurant was pretty empty for the most part we had the back room of the restaurant all to ourselves. Which was great! The service here was good. The waitress was very accommodating and was able to recommend dishes. She also came back to see how we liked our food and see how everything was. The food was delicious as well. Since it was burger night the burger came with everything, a side of fries or onion rings and a glass of beer for $20 which is great! A couple of my friends ordered the burger and loved it. I had the homemade pasta with oxtail in a creamy sauce. That was delicious as well. My other friend had the chicken with the parsnip purée. Overall We had a great experience here. The line for Hometown BBQ dragged back to its hometown. Brooklyn Crab was filled to the gills with day drinkers and crustacean lovers. The Good Fork was opening momentarily so we figured it would be easy to walk in for dinner. Easy, it was. It was a solid meal though somewhat forgettable. The restaurant itself is cute with a backyard area covered with string lights. There are two rooms within the restaurant, one that overlooks the backyard, and the one where you walk in, which is somewhat dark because it doesn't receive natural lighting. Yelp describes The Good Fork as eclectic. I would call it Korean fusion, which doesn't always necessarily work. I think The Good Fork skirts the line pretty well between crazy concoctions and respectable food. I only wish it was executed better. Four of us shared a variety of dishes. My boyfriend and I shared the vegetable scallion pancake [$14] which, if you're looking for a traditional Asian pancake, it is not this. The pancake was drizzled in various sauces and was fried. It was not overly wet nor greasy. Perhaps, it could have used a little more seasoning. It was a good size to share between two people and it satiated us. I had the Korean Steak and Eggs [$30] which I thought was passable. The steak, cooked medium, was delicious but the kimchi fried rice on the side was lukewarm and was not particularly sour. I think the waitress waited until all the entrees were ready before serving them to our group. The sunny side up egg was just runny enough to spill over the rice, but only just. My friends got the burger, I probably should have gotten that too and for half the price. I also ordered the rhubarb and strawberry cobbler [$9] for dessert (spring!) but my excitement was quickly dashed. It looked like it was thrown onto the plate from the baking pan. Let's call it rustic. It was tasty but it was hard to cut through the rhubarb, while the rest of the pastry was kind of soggy. My friends had Steve's Key Lime Pie (which is also located in Red Hook). I thought the lime flavor was muted, versus what you get at the actual shop, which I've been to. I had the Carpe Diem [$12] which is a margarita with jalapeño and other fruit flavors. I came to Good Fork with high expectations based upon a recommendation that I received. It was descent but my expectations were not met. The Good Fork is a very cute spot. The ambiance is relaxing and the backyard area is very charming. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive so those parts of it were nice but the food not so much. To start we ordered the Wild Boar ribs. The ribs tasted Korean style which was good. This was probably the only thing we all agreed that we really liked. The meat came right off the bone, tender and tasty. For entrees we ordered the burger, the lobster raviolis and the duck. I thought that the lobster was fresh but the dish was not memorable to me. I am a big fan of lobster ravioli so Ive tasted many dishes of this kind. The burger was descent but again nothing memorable. I didn't try the duck but I was told that it was not that great. Overall the food was pretty mediocre meanwhile the prices were very high. It also wasn't a lot of food. We all agreed that we were still hungry shortly after leaving. As I previously mentioned The Good Fork is pricey. I never mind paying for great food but this just wasn't worth it to us. The lobster dishes were $34 each (not worth it). The bill came out to almost $200 with tax for what I mentioned above and that was not including any alcohol at all. Overall I just wouldn't bother coming back here. read more

After a short IKEA trip nearby, stopped over at this unassuming spot for a quiet dinner in the neighborhood. Plenty of table space for two people, and was immediately given menus after being seated. Menu prices are definitely on the higher-end, which is seemingly standard in the area. Between two people, shared the Pork Tonnato ($16), Scallion Pancake ($12), and House-made Kimchi ($5). Tonnato is several slices well-cooked pork with a tangy aioli and some veggies. Simple and easy-to-eat, good flavor out of the sauce. Pancake is on the oily side, but similarly has a nice compliment of sauces o top (teriyaki/mustard mayo). Kimchi is your standard fare, solid portion that pairs fine with the other dishes. Service is quick and to-the-point; efficiently getting around the restaurant without any qualms. For a low-key higher end spot, this is a the place to go. read more

A great accidental find in Red Hook. They have ample seating in their backyard and interesting decor, so much so that there was a tree trunk inside the restaurant. We were also digging the dim lighting. Most of their dishes are made with Korean flavors. We started with the Beet salad to share. The salad has a variety of ingredients dressed in blue cheese vinaigrette. You can still go for this salad even if you don't like blue cheese cuz the taste of blue cheese is mild. Here are the entrées we ordered: -Crispy Duck Confit: crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Not the best duck confit I've had but the tamarind vinaigrette and the mango glaze paired well with the whole dish. Portion is on the smaller end. -Market Fish: perfect plating and a nice sear on the fish. Fish lacked spices and some salt but the roasted tomato remoulade was tasty. -The Good Fork Burger with kimchee: a bit over-grilled, but the burger was delicious and the kimchee was a great substitute for cheese. The handmade fries were a nice touch. -Steak and Egg Korean Style: my favorite dish out of the 4. With a deep fried round kimchee rice cake, salad with apples, and perfectly medium done bavette steak, this dish had a lot going on. The steak was soft and seasoned well. This is the type of restaurant that makes Brooklyn great. You can wander down an empty, unassuming block and step into a packed place where the staff makes you feel like you just got home, and the food and drink will be as interesting, as savory, as absolutely delicious as anywhere in the world. There is often a short wait for a table, but the host will gladly take down your number and give you a call when yours is ready. If you walked 45 minutes to get here like I did, a short stroll around the block shouldn't bother you anyway. The food is well worth the wait (and the walk). Once you're finally seated, take your time. Enjoy the little lights twinkling around the entire space, order an adult beverage and pick a few things to eat off the short, sweet menu. As a former NOLA resident, I couldn't pass up the fried oyster po' boys topped with pickled red onions, tequila-cured tomatillos and a remoulade sauce. The flavors were spot on, but I think an extra oyster in each and they wouldn't have been overwhelmed by the bread. The avocado puree accompaniment was more than welcome, however. I couldn't pass up what the waitress called their signature dish, and it's a house favorite with good reason. The Steak and Eggs "Korean Style" consists of skirt steak marinated and seasoned almost exactly as my mother used to do it, but masterfully cooked to a medium rare she never quite hit. It's accompanied by kimchee rice and an egg fried to an amazing crispiness, especially considering the beautifully runny yolk that tied it all together. If I had one, miniscule complaint about the dish, it would be that I'd appreciate another egg as I didn't have enough to incorporate into every bite.* On a fish mission, my date chose the skate over the arctic char. The crispy coriander-crusted wing went wonderfully with the fennel and fiddlehead. A lemon butter sauce pulled it all together, and although on its own the fish was not remarkable, a bite with each component bordered on brilliance. I would never have thought to add the almonds, and I suppose that's why no one would come out to Red Hook to eat my food. I was predisposed to love my steak, but this fish has me absolutely sure that they have some very talented people in the Good Fork kitchen. I have a problem with too many choices. I can't ever decide. So we were at a lost until he told me he needed to make a quick trip out to IKEA. I immediately thought of this place. We arrived around 7pm and got a table easily. Had we arrived ten minutes later, we would have been stuck out in the cold. The place is small and extremely cozy. Minimal decor that gives it a homey yet rustic feel. If you're a hipster, you'll feel right at home with the handlebar-moustached waitstaff. We started off with two cocktails. I had the French 75 ($10) and it was excellent, strong just to my liking. My cousin had the blood orange margarita ($11) and he said it was very "tasty." My cousin is a big guy, towering over 6 feet, so he requires a "Hungry Man" portion meal. I guess I am a bit more dainty and I have gotten used to the smaller portion sizes over here in Kings County. He ended up ordering crab cakes for one appetizer, and also the steak tartare from the pre-fixe. He also had the roasted chicken and a side of shrimp scallion pancakes. Wow, he sure can eat! I also had the pre-fixe ($25) option and let me tell you what a steal this is. You get an appetizer (I ordered the mussels), a main entree (I had the artichoke risotto) and a non-chocolate dessert. You just can't beat that in Gotham! The desserts were a bit disappointing. The tres leches cake tasted like cornbread (not a bad thing, but not what I expected) and the apple pie was just bland. This is a review for the food stall at the Brooklyn Flea market and not the sit-down restaurant in Red Hook. Don't get me wrong. When I was in Red Hook, I definitely wanted to visit the restaurant and try their pork and chives dumplings so famously depicted on Bobby Flay's Throwdown show. Unfortunately, the restaurant is only open for dinner, and a multi-hour wait for some dumplings just wasn't in the cards, no matter how good they are. Fortunately fate intervened, and I had a second go at trying these. At a savings I should add since the restaurant charges $9 for their appetizer portion of dumplings! The stall actually has both the pork dumplings as well as a vegetarian dumpling, so I split my order as half and half. I was impressed. The pork dumplings are really quite good. They are browned on the bottom, and there is a lot of caramelization which is enhanced by the soy sauce. The dumplings are packed tight with plenty of pork which was nicely seasoned. It all made for a very nice package and was delicious to eat. The vegetarian dumplings were less good, but still pleasing. Perfect food for a food stall -- definitely recommend. read more

I went in August and it was great, but most recent visit in March was just baaaad. Overcooked, over seasoned schnitzel tasted like a hockey puck while chicken was bland and greasy. Food took forever and they delivered the starter when we finished the entree. Service embodied "meh." Giving two stars instead of one because it so enraged the shoe designing psychotic I was seeing that it provoked a much needed breakup. There arent that many restaurants near ikea, and The Good Fork appears to be one of the more popular one. The first time I was in the area, we arrived at 2:45pm and their lunch kitchen was closing. They always seem so busy on weekends. When I read the menu, I knew immediately that I wanted to try the bibimbop with nice fresh veggies and marinated skirt steak. It was super delicious. I would give this place 4.5 stars if I could. I recently went here for a friend's birthday party and we had the dining area in the back. Loved the decor--it's very quaint and cozy. The food is also delicious. We had most of the appetizers. The "dumplings" are very good, although they resemble potstickers more than their bulbous counterpart dumplings. I'd say the dumpling meat was on the sweet side--definitely a contrast to the salty and savory dumplings you'd find at, say, Eton in Carroll Garden. Still very good. I thought the crab cake appetizer was prepared very well with a delicately crispy coasting and fresh, sweet crab meat inside. Their sauteed sweetbread was good (yummy, thymus glands!!), but not mind blowing. And their panko-crusted prawns (like breaded shrimp) was not overwhelmingly heavy; surprisingly light. For my entree, I had the red snapper which was superb! I ate the entire thing and the portion was on the big side (it was oddly bigger than the chicken entree my boyfriend ordered). The snapper, which was juicy and not overcooked at all, came with grilled cauliflower and mizuna (which is "similar to/like baby arugula") in a hazelnut-truffle sauce. Doesn't that sound delicious? It was! I loved the sweetness of the caramelized cauliflower against the fish and the bitter, herby mizuna. The roast chicken entree was alright--it's difficult to fancy up roast chicken but I thought The Good Fork make a valiant effort. The braised leeks, mash and "black bean sauce" (if you could call it that) failed to all come together for a memorable dish however. The portion was also surprisingly small. I also tried some of the risotto which is VERY good. And I also ate someone's leftover linguine carbonara (what a glutton, right?). While I thought the pasta itself was good (which seemed more like a ribbony egg noodle than linguine), the carbonara sauce w/ bacon, arugula, sage and parmigiano failed to impress me. And I LOVE spaghetti carbonara. Out of all the dishes I tried that night, I failed to see how the food could be considered French-Korean fusion. The place did have a very good variety of foods and flavors however. My boyfriend promised me he'd bring me back so I can try the "steak & eggs" Korean style (aka the grilled skirt steak, fried eggs and kimchi fried rice entree), but it might be a while before I can get my taste buds on that. Red Hook is a little off the beaten path for us, but I'll be sure to visit The Good Fork again next time I'm in the 'hood. Also, their service is wonderful!
