We chose Gotham for our first time visit to the Big Apple. It was an overall good choice. It was a good location and it was nice to have a balcony. You get your own balcony but it has no views. But on your floor you have access to a bigger and better one. The rooms are in the back side of building so I think it made it quieter at night. Only complaints... only two elevators so and you share with staff so you can wait a long time. Once we took the stairs down from the 23rd floor. The shower was not practical it had a fancy rain down and wand. Both could have been better. Only other thing we asked front desk for some items and never got delivered. But over all. The Gotham hotel certainly lived up to its bad place to be comic counterpart Pros: - In the heart of midtown (also a con see below) - Super walkable to everything you'd want to see + close access to Grand central station which can take you anywhere in the city - Large balconies for guest use on the 19-23rd floors - Good tasting restaurant attached to the hotel Cons: - The sound. Construction, loud honking, screaming from outside, revving engines (I know this is part of staying in the city, but other hotels I have stayed at have had better soundproofing) - The curtains (See picture) this was taken at 2:30a.m the building across the street had LED displays blasting in at all hours + street lighting. Black out curtains fitting windows should not be an issue at a supposed 4 star hotel - Front desk Reason #1, at first the front desk worker seemed super friendly while checking us in, however he noted that we had not signed up both guests for the breakfast @ the hotel. - If two guests are booked, why in the world would we not book two breakfasts/would they not agree to fix once they realized this. Instead they said I could pay $20 (each) for another two food vouchers. ($40) we declined and went on with our stay. - I later overheard this same hotel worker saying the EXACT same thing to another guest who was checking in. Shady. - Front desk reason #2 it stinks in there, I don't know if there's a sewage leak or vein that runs through but every time I stepped in the lobby I gagged - Price: Extremely pricy for what you are getting. LOCATION: The hotel is located on 46th Street between 5th and Madison. CONCEPT: This is a boutique hotel. Each of the 25 floors have two street and two air shaft-facing rooms with balconies. Aligned with its literary namesake, stacks of books are in each room and a ground level restaurant (although not affiliated with hotel) is named the Reading Room. EXPERIENCE: I've stayed in street and air shaft-facing rooms and am surprised to prefer air-shaft facing. The street-facing peers into the offices of JP Morgan. The air shaft walls are clean and attractive, and made the room feel like a quiet tucked away oasis. Street-facing balconies are narrow -- fine for standing and looking across 46th Street. The air shaft balconies are large enough for a cafe table and two chairs. The lower floors are closer to neighboring buildings' HVAC fans, so the white noise produced during summer air conditioning may be louder. SERVICE: Helpful and friendly service TIPS: There are larger balconies with upholstered outdoor furniture and a dining table on the upper floors, and guests may access. Good place to dine on take out breakfast from one of the shops on 46th Street. Bathrobes are available, but they are not in closet nor bathroom. Pretty good experience here, this place is a little quirky and was fine for two nights. There's barely a lobby area so if you're looking for a place to hang out at the hotel or work, stick to your room or one of the community balconies on floors 19-23. Staff was friendly enough but didn't go out of their way, room was clean and bed was comfortable. However, it ass pretty loud compared to other hotels that I've stayed at in mid town. Formal Complaint Regarding Undisclosed Cleaning Fee & Unprofessional Conduct - February 11, 2026 Stay I am writing to formally address my experience at The Gotham Hotel regarding my Dayuse reservation on February 11, 2026 (3:00 PM - 11:00 PM). I have stayed at your property 3-4 times previously and have always had positive experiences. That is why I returned. Unfortunately, this most recent visit was handled in a manner that was unprofessional and unacceptable. February 11, 2026 - Arrival (Approximately 3:00 PM) Upon arrival, my friend and I were carrying multiple heavy decorations for a Valentine's Day proposal. A blonde doorman opened the main entrance door. However, when it became clear that we were struggling to manage our belongings and access the elevator, he did not offer assistance. A front desk employee instructed the doorman to help us upstairs. The doorman initially responded, "nah they got it," before eventually escorting us up. Even then, he did not assist with carrying our items nor offer a luggage cart. As a returning guest, this level of service was disappointing and inconsistent with my prior experiences at the hotel. February 11, 2026 - Checkout (11:00 PM - 11:27 PM) At approximately 11:00 PM, my partner and I were still actively cleaning the room, which contained rose petals, balloons, and proposal materials. Between approximately 11:00 PM and 11:27 PM, the front desk called the room three separate times stating that our Dayuse period had ended and that we needed to come downstairs. Each time, I clearly communicated that we were cleaning and needed a few additional minutes. At approximately 11:27 PM, I was told that if we did not come down immediately, we would be charged a $50 late checkout fee. I again explained we were trying to clean that I have a lot of decorations in the room like balloons, rose petals and etc. I was told, "we have cleaners for that." At no point during these calls was I informed of any cleaning fee. I would've liked to have an option of choosing between the cleaning fee or the late checkout fee. It's the principle of the situation. February 17, 2026 - First Call Regarding Charge Approximately one week later, I noticed an $81 charge on my account labeled as a cleaning fee. On February 17, I called the hotel to inquire about the charge. I explained that this fee was never disclosed to me at checkout. I was informed that a manager would return my call. I did not receive a call back. February 18, 2026 - Second Call (Approximately 5:54 PM) I called again and was informed that management had already left for the day (after 5:00 PM) and that I would need to call back the following day. February 19, 2026 - Third Call (Approximately 11:25 AM) On February 19 at approximately 11:25 AM, I called again and spoke with Alessandra. I requested to speak with a manager and was asked why I wanted ti speak to a manager and to reexplain the situation again. During our conversation, the discussion escalated into a back-and-forth argument. Alessandra basically stated that it was my fault for not asking the front desk employee if there was a cleaning fee, that is not my responsibility. While I was still speaking and attempting to clarify the issue, Alessandra ended the call by hanging up without resolution. Alessandra later called me back stating she had conducted an "investigation" and that the front desk employee reported I never mentioned decorations in the room. This is inaccurate. Staff clearly saw the decorations upon our arrival, as they assisted with the elevator while we carried them upstairs. Although the conversation involved disagreement, I continued engaging in an effort to resolve the matter. Despite my repeated request, I was never given the opportunity to speak directly with a manager at any point during this process. Alessandra stated she would call me back at 4:00 PM on February 19. I did not receive a call back. As of February 22, 2026 As of February 22, I have received no follow-up communication. If you have a chance to go to a different hotel, I suggest you do that because you do not want to go through what I went through. read more

Middle of the road hotel that wishes it was more. The room was a decent size bit the floors were not clean. I had to brush off the bottom of my feet, after a shower, to get the dirt off before putting on my socks. Stayed on the front side of the hotel and it was pretty noisy. read more

The Gotham offers clean, spacious rooms in Midtown for a reasonable (by NY standards) nightly rate. There's also a convenient little bodega immediately adjacent to the hotel. The staff was welcoming and accommodating. I had a great view of Midtown from my room on the 9th floor and even the tiniest of Juliette balconies to step onto to take in the city's vibe. The bath was clean, spacious (again, by NYC standards) and we'll appointed. Water pressure in the shower could have been better. This hotel loses a star for the reason many hotels fall short in my view - lack of electric outlets. In this modern world when everyone has multiple devices, the number and location of electric outlets at this hotel are sub par. There was one outlet near the desk with only one plug available. The same was true near the bed. I had electronics (I was traveling on business) scattered across the room because of the dearth of convenient outlets. Forget USB charging ports, I was desperate for more wall outlets. For all the effort to present a modern hotel look and experience, this hotel does a great job save convenient and sufficient points to charge your devices in-room. That said, I enjoyed my stay and the location was top drawer. I'll be back. read more

Two stars = just okay. But I would put 1.5 if I could. One seemed too harsh. It was challenging to pick a rating because one star is poor and three stars is good. Our stay was definitely not good, but I'm not sure it was poor either. Basic facts: we paid about $380 for the room and I believe a $27 resort fee so overall a little over $400 for a one night stay. We stayed the Saturday after thanksgiving. Let's start with the good. Staff was incredibly friendly. We arrived at the hotel around 12 pm on Saturday and planned to just leave our luggage since check in isn't until 4. Luckily they let us check in early so that was a great start. Location was perfect. Right off fifth so you could easily walk to stores, food places, and Central Park. Our room had a patio which is great for air. No view but the patio was still nice. Because it was a one night stay they also gave us a $10 credit for their mini bar/snacks. The not so great. The room was very dusty. We ended up wearing our shoes in the room because our feet were black from the dust if we went barefoot. This honestly didn't bother us that much since they have wood floors and we understand dust is normal. The room itself was okay. Nothing fancy, nothing great. There were a little things here and there, for example, the shower wasn't the cleanest, but we were fine, not worth a complaint. When we came back around 10:30 pm the doorman and concierge were watching a game, we're guessing basketball, so they didn't greet us. Again not bad and we're sports fanatics so we get it but since I'm writing this review I thought I'd point it out. The REALLY BAD was when we got into bed and there was dried blood stains on our comforter and yellow stains (If I can attach photos I will). So dust is not bad, yellow stains are gross but not that bad, but blood stains is unsanitary and calls for a potential health inspection. Diseases can be transferred through blood so this obviously freaked us out. We called the front desk, told them, and asked for a new comforter. They did apologize and came up quickly, but they came with a thin grey blanket. It's end of November so it's pretty chilly and we thought this was odd. The room has heat so we just turned the heat up but the blanket was also stained. Again if I can post photos I will. It was stained in the sense that maybe bleach was previously used and changed the grey fabric to yellow. Also, they did not take the blood blanket and just left it in our room. I tried to find someone on their website to contact about this but the only thing they have is their front desk email which didn't seem appropriate. We previously also emailed their front desk and they didn't timely respond, we had to email them twice to finally get a response. They were obviously aware that we had blood on our bed sheets and still nothing was done to apologize to us for the blood issues and it just seemed like a lot of issues for $400/night. We fly to New York multiple times a year to visit family and we like to try hotels to find favorites in different areas. We won't be back to the Gotham. New York is filled with hotels, so if you can stay elsewhere, I'd recommend doing just that. read more

It took awhile to figure out a go-to midtown hotel for business travel but this is it. Super nice staff in the lobby. Boutique style so only 4 rooms per floor. Mini fridge that's well stocked. Desk area with comfortable chair. Spacious sq ft by NYC standards -- enough to get some morning yoga in. Clean, tasteful decor that doesn't feel dated. And my fave - a small Juliette balcony so you can gauge the weather before heading out for the day. Knocked off a star because room service takes forever but the acacia bowl + cappuccino were delicious. Will stay here again for sure. read more

There are only 2 rooms on the 21st floor. I can't speak for the other floors but it was nice to have a more personal feel with the public terrace located across from our room. This place is extremely overpriced!! I never mind paying for quality or amenities but this place has neither!! I have no idea why the ratings through Hotels.com are so glowing but they need not be. I've stayed in other same star level hotels in midtown with a better price point and actual quality. I should've known to check Yelp prior to booking. The staff is very friendly, hence the second star rating in this review but still not worth the $800 total with tax for three nights that we payed!! Upon entering our room on the 21st floor we were immediately hit with a strong, stale smoke odor. Luckily after leaving the door to the pitiful terrace open for a bit, the smell dissipated. There are stains on the desk top, drawer tops, floors and bedding. The remote control along with the tv sucks! The tv signal rarely worked the entire three days of our trip. Writing this late because I was on a whirlwind of a holiday trip around the east coast, but me and my girlfriend had an amazing stay at the Gotham Hotel! We checked in the day after Christmas for our first couples trip and we were ecstatic already about the location of the hotel and price we had booked. The staff were immediately (and continuously) helpful and attentive from the start of our stay until the end where they even held our bags longer after our departure time was delayed past checkout. You just can't beat this location and great views for this price if you're coming to NYC. The rooms aren't anything crazy to brag about, but if you're looking for a place to lounge in and have a spa trip then you're already looking at the wrong place. If you're coming to tour or spend most your day in the city, Gotham offers extremely spacious rooms for all your stuff, a great relaxing view when you are in and great amenities all around. And you're DEFINITELY getting a better room then you'd get at most other places at this price range/location. For the rooms I'd probably give this place a 4 but with the great staff and location easily a 5 experience for the market they're aiming for! I keep harping on location but its crazy. About 10 minute walk to Times Square/Broadway, The Empire State Building, 15 to central park and a major subway stop 2 blocks away to go anywhere else. Truly made this trip awesome for us. I again would like to thank the staff who were so helpful and courteous. I feel bad because I forgot many of there names now writing this so late, but would like to specifically thanks Dante who checked us in and checked up on us throughout (believe he's the manager) as well as the bellhop and very nice girl who worked the desk a bunch. I saw many low rating comments on this hotel; however, I would say that visitors should have expected how it would be like when they set the budget for the hotel in New York. Or maybe I was lucky that my room was pretty clean. Taking about the view, this is New York..., and having a balcony is already considered as really good. The bellmen are very nice whenever you are going out and coming in, and the service of the front desk is depending on who was on the schedule. Okay, I'm going to be honest... When my husband and I started looking for hotels to stay at while in NYC, the Gotham Hotel wasn't our first choice. We definitely wanted a hotel at Midtown so we can be close to everything in NYC, but with the NY prices, everything seemed so expensive. In the end, we decided to take our chances with Hotwire and book a random hotel through them... and TA-DA! We ended up getting the Gotham Hotel. Upon check-in, everything seemed okay. The hotel itself is pretty small, only 4 rooms per floor and 19 floors... (I think).. Our room was fine - the bed was comfortable, everything was clean, we had a mini-fridge, and we were even able to open our balcony door, which was a nice touch. We had a bit of trouble with the room AC and heater, but we called the front desk and someone was able to help us almost immediately. The only negative thing that I can think of is that they don't have an ice machine... you have to call the front desk every time you want ice. Other than that, my husband and I had a very pleasant stay at the Gotham Hotel! They're a family business and they were all super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The gf and I were in NY for a weekend getaway and chose the Gotham Hotel as our base camp for the weekend's activities. You would scarcely know that the building at 16 East 46th was a hotel unless you were specifically staying there. The Gotham is a boutique hotel in every sense of the word. It's a small property with a minimalist lobby and only two guest rooms per floor. Its location and proximity to shopping along 5th Ave is certainly one of its selling points since it's otherwise in a fairly unremarkable part of town. Frankly, the Gotham would've never popped up on our radar as a place to stay had it not been for a Living Social coupon, which offered and upgraded room on a higher floor and a welcome gift, among other things. Our well-appointed room contained modern furnishings and a 50" HD flat panel. The bed, fitted with quality linens, was very comfortable. The bathroom had modern fixtures with just enough counter space to accommodate your toothbrush, razor, and other assorted personal items. The hotel provided Bigelow soap, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner. There was only a stand up shower, no tub. Our first night, room service delivered the welcome gift, a decent bottle of prosecco and a couple of cookies. Nice touch! Another great feature was the availability of free wifi in the rooms and throughout the property. However, what wasn't nearly as nice was the addition of a tip charged to our bill by the on-premises restaurant, Tenpenny (which will be reviewed separately). Complimentary continental breakfasts were a part of the Living Social deal. There was no mention that a tip to the restaurant would be automatically charged to our room. This was especially troubling, as we had left a tip on the table. Anyway, when I inquired about the charge to the hotel clerk, she basically shrugged her shoulders and said that the restaurant wasn't a part of the hotel and that the tip charged to my room by the restaurant was their normal operating procedure. While the charge wasn't really exorbitant (approx. $5), it was a definite foul as there was no mention of it in any of the fine print on the deal that I saw. Based solely on the facilities, amenities, its location, and our comfort during our stay, it was squarely in 4.5-star territory. That said, the inappropriate tip added to our bill and the hotel's inability to explain it to my satisfaction really irked me. And for that, call it a 2 star experience. You are better off sleeping outside than sleeping here. This establishments rooms are simply unhygienic. There's black mold growing in the "junior suite" where they are charging an upward of $700 a night. The bed is literally like sleeping on a park bench. Sheets, towels, all smell like mildew... the walls are thin, I can hear everything going on inside the hotel and everything going on outside too. needless to say will not be staying again... if I could give this place negative stars I would read more

The staff was friendly but didn't really address any of the issues that came up during our stay. There are plenty of cheap breakfast options a few doors away as well. The hotel was clean and the room large by NYC standards. Negatives: There is an $18/day resort type fee to use a gym in another building tacked on to the bill. Our room didn't get clean sheets in 5 days and the "refresh" wasn't a cleaning but new towels. The toilet ran all day and night. The bedding was thin and the mattress was basic. If you get a good deal and plan to spend most of your day exploring the city, it is a fine choice. If you want to spend lots of time in the hotel, keep looking. read more

I. Love. This. Place. I'm in town for training and my first class started at 9:00 am. I came to the hotel to drop off my bag around 8:30 am, and my plan was to just check in later. Not only was Anna able to check me in early, she upgraded my room. How's that for amazing service! The lobby is modern but still inviting and the rooms are surprisingly spacious for a Manhattan hotel! Lots of room to do push ups and jumping jacks. I opted to lay in bed. Speaking of beds, these are suuuuppper comfy. Like a firm hug from your better half. There are only three rooms on each floor as well, so very minimal foot traffic. The bathroom is designed to give lots of surface area to place your items, so it doesn't feel small at all and the shower has a rainfall shower head, which just screams fancy. Or sexy. Your choice. They also provide C.O. Bigelow products which leave you smelling flat out awesome. There is a mini fridge, stocked with all sorts of drinks and libations, as well as a few snacks for typical hotel prices. The terrace is nice from what I can see. I have an irrational fear of birds flying into my room, so I didn't go out there. Actually, it's 1:35 am and I just haven't gone out there and I'm too lazy to look. But I'm sure it's great. There is a restaurant attached (tenpenny) that smells really good. Breakfast is available there for hotel guests as well, if you're into that kind of thing. In summation, this place is fantastic. Good things first - the room size was one of the biggest I've seen in nyc and probably the best part of the hotel. Bathroom was also decently sized and the waterfall shower was great. Decent location with some good food options close by. While some of the flooring and amenities looked rather worn it was clean - no bugs. Now for the bad. We smelled weed literally everywhere except for our room. In the hallway outside our room, in the elevator and in the lobby. Be sure to stay away if you have sensitivities. Also there was some false advertising bc this hotel said that it had a concierge available but this wasn't the case when we were there - they couldn't even call a taxi for us. We stayed here two nights and overall, I don't think it's worth the price, but if there's not many other options it's an ok place to stay. read more

This Hotel is like a second home to me and my daughter. If you want a better room, pay a little more for the upgrade. Worth it. The staff is incredible and Happy to help. Excellent housekeeping, excellent front desk. Quiet and wonderful spot in the middle of Manhattan. Less than a block from the 5th Ave, Just love the location and the accommodating staff. Wow. For not good. I usually avoid Midtown hotels but this offer from hoteltonight was too good to pass up so I took it. The lobby was like a ghost town the whole time. And when there were people there they didn't seem too interested or friendly. The room was ok but on the older side. The balcony in my room faces brick walls. The whole place just seemed weird and unfriendly. And it didn't help I found out that less than a year ago a lady jumped off out of one of the rooms. Very sad. Overall if you need a place to sleep, fine. But nothing to write home about. Will not be staying there again. read more

I am not sure why they don't give you face/wash clothes I had to ask for them....no coffee maker in room and you have to ask for ice. However you have a frig for leftovers and there are only 4 rooms per floor. Nice walk to diamond district, Times Sq. And Grand central station. Nice boutique hotel. The bar area seems to be happening 2 coffee breakfast places on either side of hotel, business computer and printer. FYI they don't change the sheets everyday!!!! Gasp!! read more

Amazing, Amazing, Amazing. Everything about this super modern, super fresh, and super comfortable place makes me smile. The bed was amazing. Lighting in the room very nice. The bathroom was dream-like...I wanted to take it all home and replace my bedroom. For me, that is always a sign of a good hotel. Comes with top end soaps, services, and mini-bar. Check-in was simple and easy. The gentleman very nice. Forgo a big chained hotel and try this one! And the noise from outside was minimal. Location amazing...2 blocks from grand central station and 1 block from the top designer stores on 5th Avenue. read more

A very solid hotel in NYC. Have stayed here many times and always good. I'll be back. You should try The Gotham. Staff is great, room was clean and lovely. Great location! Times square, Rockefeller, Grand Central Station, Broadway, Radio city... did I say great location! Good sized room, bed and pillows are comfortable. Nice shower. Balcony looks down to Times Square. Lots of restaurants and coffee houses in proximity. Good value for the $$. Give them a try. read more
