Thanks to Yelp, I found this lesser known gem of a hotel!!! Was very clean, the staff were all friendly and helpful. Pema, one of the housekeepers, and Candace at the reception/check-in desk, were particularly helpful. Was quiet all night outside our room and only minimal noise in hall during morning/daytime. Excellent location and excellent price!! Their parking is 3 blocks away, in a garage next to Memorial Sloan Kettering. I suspect other hotels in the area also don't have attached parking garages--because the parking garage had a list of several hotels who validate parking in that garage for their guests. Anyway, it was only a minor inconvenience--we would stay here again, in a heartbeat!! read more

Reason for 4 and not 5 stars is the sofa bed mattress was really thin and you felt every part of the frame. We booked through AAA travel website, and I think the per night charge was extremely reasonable fir the large suite that has large sleeping area, king size bed, TV and full bath. The living room area had couch, table and chairs, sink, cupboards with dishes, glasses, flatware, Microwave and small refrigerator. Every staff member very personable, helpful. Near tons of food establishments. Only a couple blocks to subway. read more

Don't stay anywhere else! All the 4+ reviews are accurate. I will never stay anywhere else in NYC! 1) The customer service is second to none! Seriously. Anything you need, any issue you have, they find a way to take care of you quickly. EVERY staff member we encountered was so friendly and accommodating. 2) Clean!! This hotel is not decorated in a modern fashion, but it is maintained better than most hotels I've experienced. Even the cleaning products they use are not overpowering. 3) Location! In Midtown, convenient to 51 St subway station (1/2 block away) where you can take trains 4,5,6 and E train. The M50 bus stops at the corner. 4) Price! Clean, comfortable and spacious rooms. Wonderful service. Located between two subway stations. Our tv was glitchy. They said they would address it but we didn't get around to turning it on again. We had ample towels and luxurious bedding. Nice bath products and coffee set up. We plan to return to NYC and while we'll consider hotels closer to attractions, it will be hard not to choose the San Carlos over anything else. My sister and I stayed here for 5 days, 4 nights in early March and the rooms were much bigger than we anticipated. We had a small kitchenette (mini fridge, microwave, cups, wine glasses, plates, cutlery, etc.). Very pleasantly surprised by the amenities and how nice staff were. My sister and I arrived 6 hours prior to check-in and the front desk personnel (I'm sorry I forgot your name!) had no issues accommodating us. Be warned that we were charged an extra $100 for super early check-in but we didn't care because we wanted to take a nap after getting off a red-eye flight. The hotel was also quiet (but that may have been due to COVID-19 precaution as people were hesitant to travel--we were adventurous and decided to keep our plans since everything was already paid for). I would definitely recommend this hotel again. It's in a great location (Midtown) and close to everything. Getting an uber or lyft to pick us up and drop us off was also super convenient due to the location--it's in a little alley and made parking kind of easy. My aunt actually wants to visit NYC and I recommended her to stay here! read more

Extremely central and convenient location - but that said, is not everything in Manhattan central?? Well it was not too much North, not too much south, well just in Midtown! The rooms were better than in Arlo, but still for my taste a bit too small. The unit was marketed as having a kitchenette, which really was just the fact that there was a microwave (hence: it is a real marketing joke, and should not be permitted). A fridge and a coffee machine are pretty much universal standard, but most places I have gone too offer something better than filter coffee ... There was an Indian-Chinese fusion restaurant associated with the hotel, but for some reasons did not capture my attention or desire. After all, there are uncounted options in NYC. read more

The San Carlos Hotel has been the perfect landing place for our getaway. It is not fancy nor up-to-date in its decor, however it has all of the essentials... and done well! It feels like what hotels should be like, what they used to be like before many started taking shortcuts in the areas of housekeeping and guest service. Everything was in its place and immaculately clean upon arrival. We enjoyed the size of our deluxe King room. The bed is comfortable. We The front desk (Carlos, Crystal) and housekeeping staff (Dolma) were very accommodating with our requests and questions. Room was extremely quiet facing a silent alleyway. Very good experience. We recently stayed for a week. Spacious and comfortable king room, which featured a microwave, refrigerator, etc. Great location and nice staff. There is a restaurant downstairs (did not try), but it does not serve breakfast until 11 am. There are plenty of other good food options nearby, including Ess-a bagels. Reasonably priced, especially given large sized room (for NY), location, etc. read more

Our recent stay at the San Carlos was great! The hotel is nicely decorated and very clean. Our room was spacious, had a refrigerator and a very comfortable king size bed. Service was very courteous and prompt from start to finish. Overnight parking is available at a garage a few blocks away and the hotel will validate your ticket. The cost was $35.00 which is excellent!! The hotel is in a great location as well. We would be happy to return on our next visit! read more

We really love everything about the San Carlos Hotel! When we arrived at 11:00 a.m., we were informed that check-in wasn't until 3:00 p.m. - but the desk clerk did us a favor and allowed us to check in right away because our son was so cute. (Awwww!) Our suite was absolutely fabulous. It was a HUGE one bedroom with a living room area and kitchenette which had a microwave and a fridge. Perfect for this family of three. The service is excellent and the hotel staff really friendly and helpful. Free continental breakfast is also available for guests. Even better, the hotel is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, so everything is within walking distance. I would definitely recommend staying here if you're planning a visit to NYC. I enjoy extensively researching my destination before traveling and chose The San Carlos Hotel because reviews told me it was located by a subway station in a safe, walkable neighborhood with excellent staff. I also liked that they had suites available at a reasonable price point--allowing our family of four to have ample room. The San Carlos Hotel was all this and more! My husband, who travels for work often, told me we must stay here again the next time we are in NYC. This is high praise coming from him! When we entered through the doors of the hotel each evening after a long day of sightseeing, we were always warmly greeted and felt relief to be back in our comfortable accommodations. The following story will explain why we will be returning to this wonderful hotel: Shortly after we checked in our first night in New York, my son told me he smelled smoke in our room. Then his eyes started to become very irritated and he didn't feel well. He is very sensitive to smoke. We called the front desk and they sent the wonderful Manny up to assist us. He tried to determine where the smoke was coming from and my husband and Manny concluded that someone had been smoking in the hallway. Twenty minutes later the smell was stronger and we realized it was coming from under the door that adjoined our room to the room next door. Manny was still in the hallway trying to neutralize the smell of the smoke so we alerted him to the situation. He approached the front desk on our behalf and we were offered a new room with an upgrade for the entire duration of our stay! Wow! We were blow away by the fact that Manny and the front desk resolved our problem so quickly and without any fuss on our part. This experience made us loyal customers of The San Carlos Hotel each time we are in NYC! They take care of their guests. Details about the room: The hotel beds are comfortable with high end sheets. The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. The kitchen area had a bigger mini-fridge that had plenty of room for half gallon sized cartons. We ordered breakfast items from Target (delivered via Shipt) and enjoyed starting our day slowly enjoying breakfast in the room. There was also a microwave and small coffee maker. For Father's Day we ordered bagel sandwiches from Ess-A-Bagel (on the next street over) and avoided the LONG line by ordering via Yelp. Location is amazing! We bought unlimited 7 day metro cars and rode the subway all over Manhattan. So simple using City Mapper app. Subway stations are very close to the hotel. We walked easily to 5th Avenue shopping, Top of the Rock, great dining (loved The Smith), St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Grand Central Station. The whole family felt safe exploring the area surrounding the hotel as it was full of tourists, professionals, and locals. Safer and different vibe from the chaos of Times Square. Overall it's "meh". I'm not sure if the cost is equivalent to what the hotel has to offer. This hotel has a nice lobby which is a misleading representation of the rest of the hotel. The room was decently clean but very small and unimpressive. The worst part was the bed... it was extremely hard. Even my husband noted how it was uncomfortable. That being said, house keeping was extremely kind; I have extreme back pain and used about 8 pillows to make a mattress pad. They brought me extra blankets as well. Okay here's the scoop. To get a decent room in the city you're looking at least paying $250 a night these days (unless you are really good with the internet specials). I'm old school I want to make a reservation and have a 24 hour cancelation policy. And I've stayed at many hotels around the Midtown area (times square with the kidlets, and even in Chelsea during a booked out weekend in the city). We paid $350 a night (this was St. Patty's week, prices vary due to the going ons in the city) I have to say by far for our money this was the best value and impeccable service for our stay....ever (well except when we stayed at my cousin's....love Hotel Jo! It's free!) But that aside when we can't stay with family I want a place that I can crash at the end of a day tromping all over the city and then stuffing a big ass dinner down, where I can relax and feel comfy. And San Carlos was great. We did a minor upgrade for and extra $25 a night and got the Executive Suite with a King and it came with a kitchenette and a pull out couch (with a second tv in the front area). So nice having the extra room to move around. And having a fridge, was a big plus! I like to have a few snacks on hand fruit and juice, and yes they have one of those silly tempting fridges in the bed area (with M&M's staring at you for $6) on a weighted top. But I had my little fridge for my personal goodies, oh and a microwave ( I like tea). A coffee maker, and yes the mint on the last night was a nice touch. Oh and we totally forgot to use our nice big robes in the closet....booooo But it was quiet (other than outside noise occasionally). and I rarely saw other people even staying there. I used the exercise room which had two treadmills, a crossramp and a recumbent bike. I used the treadmill which worked well for me. The staff was very helpful, and always seemed to be right there with whatever we needed. And when we initially checked in on a Saturday at 8pm tired and weary there was no waiting, it took 5 minutes. So nice.... I love the location, 50th for me is near the Lex subway line @ 51st and an easy walk to so many things. I will definitely stay here again. :-) read more

We booked a double queen room. The room we got was good, fairly big for a new york hotel. The biggest plus is that it comes with a microwave and an empty bar-sized fridge that is for our use! There is a separate drinks fridge that the hotel provides for in-room convenience. But for us with young kids, a microwave in the room is a big plus! The hotel provides a good continental breakfast spread, including fresh pastries, OJ, coffee/tea and yoghurt and cereal selections. We had our breakfast at the hotel everyday. There is a free business center with 6 desktop computers and free internet access. A printer is even provided free to print-out online reservations/tickets and flight check-ins. Wifi is free around the hotel. There is a pool but we did not get to try it. This hotel is has a good location mid-town. A block away is the Metro station on 51th St/Lexington, which covers both the 6 and M line, so it is fairly convenient. We do need to walk to 52nd street Metro entrance which has an elevator for our stroller. It is also a fairly quick 15-20 mins walk towards Times Square with the kids. If supper is needed, there is a number of late night cafes around the hotels. Laundry service is also available down 2 blocks. read more

A coworker recommended this hotel to me for NY travel and I am extremely disappointed. First of all, I was here for a week and paid $520 a night for this place, which isn't too bad for NY, but way too much for this hotel. This is not a 5 or even 4 star hotel. It is a 3 star hotel disguised as a 4 star hotel. I'm giving them an extra star for the large room sizes (the rooms are suites); the large room is nice, but I honestly never used the other part of my suite. I don't really need a dining table or a living room. Maybe this is good for some families, but I would rather have a smaller room that is actually nice. At the cost of large rooms, shared spaces such as hallways are narrow and tight. The staff here is undertrained; while the majority of them are nice, they are just not that helpful. For example, I requested for a quite room upon arrival. That usually means a room not facing the main street where there is construction going on. Then there was the day my key stopped working and I had to go up and down the elevator 5 times before it was resolved. And there are only two elevators. And they are slow. I also requested for a cab because I have to leave in the middle of the night to catch a plane when cabs are harder to come by. The front desk told me that I have to flag it down myself, or use the hotel's shuttle service costing $69. When I informed me that other hotels would arrange for cab service, he got visibly annoyed and told me that yellow cabs do not have a number to call. After a 2-second google search, I found the number, which is 1-800-609-8731. Press 1 for reservations. For me, this was the final straw. I don't appreciate hotels lying to you just to push their own services. NOT cool. The free Wi-Fi is a joke. Yes it's free, but it's SUPER slow and times you out after a while. Don't expect to be able to download your favorite shows to watch. I just ended up using my cellular network the whole time. Free breakfast? Go down the street and spend $8 at any café and you will get a better breakfast. I honestly don't understand all the high ratings here. This hotel does not deserve 5 stars, especially for what you pay. read more

A short walk to the subway but also so many places that are a walking distance. Hotel staff are all so friendly and helpful. I am in NYC every three weeks and I have tried my share of midtown accommodations and by far the Hotel San Carlos is the best. ALWAYS accommodate me on the early check In ... Which is KEY after a red eye ... Which is enough for a five star rating from me. Only once have I had a surly front desk person as for the most part the entire staff at the HSC have been awesome. The rooms are , well, roomy and the beds are clean and comfortable. The sheets and towels SMELL clean and do not give you a rash from too much industrial laundering. They have many complimentary amenities, with the free wifi being a bonus. NOTHING is more annoying to me than to be charge frigging 14 bucks per day on top of my rate for Internet !! Bottom line? Good convenient clean reasonable comfortable easy living while in the City that never sleeps! read more

I chose this hotel because it had a room with two queen beds as my wife and I were traveling with two of our children. The room was roomy and faced an alley, and as such we heard no street noise at night. The bathroom was spacious. The staff was friendly and responsive. Continental breakfast was good and was highlighted by hot milk which came in handy for cafe con leche. Convenient to the 6 subway (at 53rd and Lexington) as well as the E train and M train for easy access to the east side and the west side. Excellent restaurants nearby and a short walk to 5th Avenue. Nice medium size boutique hotel. I have stayed here many times on business since they remodeled a few years ago. The remodel job is good, much better and more comfortable than what you get at a W or Royalton or other new, supposedly hip hotel, which usually look like Design on a Dime and then charge top prices. The one bedroom suites are roomy and well appointed with multiple TVs and bathrooms for a reasonable price for NYC. The service is very friendly, personal and helpful. The have computers with Internet you can use for free and even print too. I've noticed more foreigners seem to stay here than Americans. Location is good, just behind the Waldorf, near everything in Midtown, block to shopping, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, etc. Exercise room has the basics, no pool or spa. The drawbacks are the beds are pretty hard, not really comfortable and 50th street is very noisy, but hey, its New York. The regular rooms are a little claustrophobic and the rates have gone up quite a bit in the last few years too, but you can still get deals because its not that well known yet. read more

We go into the city at least twice a year and always stay at the San Carlos...close to the metro...great sized rooms... always have good customer service...place is clean...price is reasonable and comparable to other "chain" hotels in the city. Area always feels safe....Have yet to have a problem.. On one occasion we had an air conditioner problem. I cannot report on the actual rates here, since my firm put me up here, but I am guessing our corporate rate was in and around $200 a night. Having been put up in corporate digs in the area before, I can say that this spot is special. It is conveniently located in an important work district of NYC, and yet close to the further East regions of Manhattan that are a little less business, shall we say. Inside the rooms are ample (I've seen the tiniest hotel rooms in Manhattan), comfortable, and well appointed. The bathroom is equipped with Aveda amenities! You can hear some noise through the walls, but it's not bad for a normal to light sleeper. The staff is very friendly, and no incidents. The free breaky is nothing spectacular but wholly unexpected in a business boutique hotel like this. The orange juice is fresh squeezed! read more

Best hotel I've ever stayed in. We came for our 40th wedding anniversary and were so pleased with the accommodations and service - everything was first class! Starting at check-in and until we left everyone was super courteous, very help and very efficient. The amenities were amazing: microwave, refrigerator, dishes, super comfortable bed and couch, lots of lush towels in the bathrooms. Everything was extremely clean and lovely. It is in a great location close to Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's, the major stores, etc. and you can walk to everything if you like, but the buses and subways are a few feet away.
