Stopped by on a whim during a visit to this neighborhood and found myself enjoying a very pleasant matcha latte. The area is saturated with cute coffee shops and I'm glad I stopped by at this one. The person at the counter was very friendly and explained the different sweeteners they offer. Bright, light filled coffee shop on a side street in the center of St. John's. They have excellent espresso and coffee drinks and a nice, spicy chai Which I thoroughly enjoyed. Pastries are baked in house and they looked delicious I had just eaten an ocean bun at The Sparrow bakery down the street!p so didn't try any. They had scones, cinnamon knots and cookies. I noticed that they carry breakfast sandwiches made with bread from Dos Hermanos Bakery which I frequent on N. Williams. Knowing the bread is great, I purchased a sandwich to heat up in my toaster oven the next day. inside are a few tables and chairs but since it was a sunny 76 degree day, we enjoyed our beverages outside. read more

Stepping into this coffee shop- you immediately like the vibe. The wooden plank floor, the antique counter. Also friendly staff who greets you upon entering. They made our dirty Chai teas to perfection. Honestly one of the best chai teas I've had yet! Also, a great selection of pastries . The chocolate chip cookie was superb! The owners are so wonderful and welcoming! I biked in for breakfast (without a lock) and the owner offered for me to bring my bike inside while an employee also offered me his bike lock to make sure I felt comfortable and was able to relax and enjoy myself. It was incredibly kind! Their house made syrups, sweeteners and milks are I'm vegan and they also carry Petunias pastries which is great! They roast with coava coffee and it is delicious!! 10/10 will recommend and will be peddling back for more! read more

It's a small place, but it's bright & airy inside due to high ceilings & a big skylight. Really cute coffee shop that is slightly hidden from the main road. I didn't even know it existed so glad I was able to find them on Yelp as I was walking around the area. Smallish space but they added benches around the place to add seating and the light in the place makes it feel super open. I just came from brunch so wasn't in the mood for coffee but saw they had a chai so opted to get that instead. I got mine with standard milk and my friend got hers with oat and said it was OK but I really enjoyed it with regular milk. I also saw they had breakfast sandwiches using dos hermanos bread and it smelled so good. I saw a couple folks ordering them but didn't get one this time around. I'll be sure to stop by when I'm craving a breakfast sandwich since they looked divine. read more

Oof. Some of your folks are really awesome. Some are not. Person with man bun and glasses didn't acknowledge me when I came in but ok, order my breakfast sandwich and wait...and wait...he's working on the drinks if the people ahead of me. Ok. 5-10 minutes later no big deal he puts my sandwich in the oven and starts working on measuring beans. When my sandwich beeps he takes it out, and sits out for a couple of minutes while he does other things. When he finally comes back to my sandwich I watch as he rips off half the cheese (I'm assuming he didn't put it on properly when it went in the oven and it melted over?) puts the smallest amount of pickled veggies I have ever seen with one small squiggle of sauce. Wraps it up and puts it on the counter. It was cold. :(((( I took it home and warmed it up instead of eating it cold. Still giving 4 stars bc a lot of my experiences here have been really good. But this person obviously couldn't give two shakes about making a good sandwich bc this is the worst one I've had from here. Just a mess and as mentioned, very little ingredients and cold to boot. If I come back for a sandwich and he's the only one working I won't be ordering it again. read more

Beautiful and cozy coffee shop in the heart of St. John's. It's not too busy, but it's not quiet either. Just the occasional coffee drinkers coming and going throughout the day - and if you're lucky, some will come in with their dogs! They play very tasteful music here so either soak it in or bring some headphones. I came here on Sunday and the woman/barista/everything was super sweet, and made the perfect cup of coffee my caffeine-powered body was craving. My partner and I have been getting coffee here since 2019, and it's one of the only coffee shops we can count on the drinks tasting the same each time! their signature drinks are amazing, they make their own chai, vanilla and more and it seriously pays off. My go-to is the cardigan with almond milk and it's always gone so much quicker than the usual coffees i nurse! Their breakfast sandwiches are delightful, the plant based one is my favorite. small selection of simple sandwiches with quality ingredients! The Great North is the perfect place to get a quick bite and an absolutely unique and delightful drink! Ambiance wise, I have no idea how they vet their employees before hire, but i've found some of my best music finds in the last 4 years here. I've been waiting some time to write this review because I really liked Great North when we first found them and I wanted to give them a fair chance, but it's time now. At first everything here was amazing. Great service, great vegan breakfast sandwiches, and great coffee. Maybe this is just what happens when you go to a place regularly but they twice gave me spoiled house-made oat milk. The first time they tried to say it was fine and when they tasted it themselves, they realized it was indeed spoiled. I decided to continue ordering it because I thought that was a mistake, it's been brought to their attention so it won't happen again. But yet again I received spoiled house-made oat milk in one of my drinks. After that, I switched to the brand almond milk they carry because I was afraid to get spoiled milk. We started going to See See and Two Stroke instead, but we kept coming here every now and then anyway. But today is probably the last straw for me. I ordered a tea with almond milk for pick up. When we got there, the person let us know they forgot it and rushed to get it done -- okay, no big deal, great. In the rush, they did not secure the cover and within a few minutes of leaving I was covered in boiling hot tea in the car. Both of my hands and one of my legs have burns on them. I'm icing them right now. I'll know by tomorrow how bad the damage is, but I needed to write this review because this is so negligent. After this many incidents, I don't think I can continue to go here. read more

Not only is their espresso good, they have great pastries too! I have trouble finding decent alternative milk lattes, and if I do, they lack decent pastries. This place has it all! All of their pastries are vegan and gluten free, and they're very good about identifying which pastries have allergens. I got an almond milk latte and the lemon blueberry poppyseed muffin-both are to die for. This is a cute location in St. John's. The interior is modern, but isn't so minimal to where it feels basic. I love the design of this place. It's a great, quiet place to study. I will be coming back during my lunch breaks! Update: I have been here about 12 times now (literally) and since then, I have had their almond milk latte, vegan blueberry lemon poppyseed muffin, iced americano, hot americano, hot coffee, vegan cherry almond rhubarb, and their vegan zucchini carrot muffin. LET ME TELL YOU. This place is absolutely insane and blows my mind every time. The baristas are always incredibly friendly-notably friendly. I'm definitely going to be trying everything someday. I'm praying that they'll eventually get almond butter because I'm dying to try their yogurt bowls and I'm allergic to peanuts. :/ I have recommended this place to everyone in my life already, and will continue to come back weekly! read more

I have a bagel once a year. I looked on yelp to see where to go and North Great Cafe in St. John's was recommended. It did not disappoint! Not to mention how delicious the coffee and ham, cheese and jalapeños turnover my friend had. The people behind the counter are kind and also efficient. Great every time I go there. As you can see in the picture, I couldn't wait to take a couple bites of the bagel, so good. Great neighborhood cafe to hit before the farmer's market or just to walk around. The space is very cute and seem nice . Been there once so far and was a bit confused. I ordered matcha latte and few snacks with my husband "for here" and they made our drinks in plastic cups with plastic straws - didn't make sense to me to use plastic things and drink things from plastic ... Another moment was confusing is that my matcha latte tasted just as milk and nothing else ... Excellent food, drink, and service! My partner and I stopped by a bit after noon on Saturday to have a light breakfast. The team behind the bar was so friendly we both commented on how kind and truly personable they are. We appreciate it! We enjoyed the breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel, the yogurt bowl, and a cruffin - a croissant-muffin with almost a cheese danish + blueberry compote topping. We also both got chais, one with a shot of espresso. Everything was solid flavor-wise and all of the dishes had a special, extra touch that some other places seem to forego for a more "minimalist" aesthetic, which can mean not much taste-wise We will be back!! read more

The bagels are chewy and they give you cream cheese on the side and not enough to cover bagel. Limited bagel choices at 11:30. The staff was ok but seemed unwelcoming. When I walked in someone I thought was a customer waiting in line ended up being an employee just standing around with no hi or welcome at all. I won't go back or recommend it. Very nice staff, limited menu when you're looking for food, but they had breakfast sandwiches and that's what we were looking for. The coffee was good, the other patrons were nice too. It was a little 'Portland weird' but not pretentious. Their sandwich selections were 1-ham, 2-veggie and 3- plant based... and they name the brand of each ingredient that they can.
