I've really given this place a fair try and have visited multiple times. However, the coffee is sub-par (the latte was WAY too hot and the espresso was burned), and the customer service is not great. My kid and I visited here on Thanksgiving morning. It's such a tiny place, but cute and clean. We were thrilled it was open (other places on this main strip in St. John's was closed, or perhaps they were opening later). Anyhow, it was warm and cozy inside, and the lady barista was super friendly, and the aroma of good coffee and fresh pastries wafted through the air. I ordered a small vanilla latte. My kid ordered a pumpkin spice latte and a savory popover-pastry (I forget the type she ordered). We brought everything back to my kid's place, and OMG I was blown away by how good my latte was. I wasn't expecting it to be as amazingly good as it was, but wow, it was delicious. And my kid said her PSL was probably the best she ever had. Stopped by this little shop when it all of a sudden started raining in June. It literally only had this one super nice lady running the whole thing. Affogato is this coffee dessert where you have gelato in expresso. They also have gelato, I had the vegan Coconut Stracciatella, and it was so good, especially in their waffle cone! The waffle cone was like somehow soft but crunchy at the same time, it like melted/broke down in my mouth and it was so good. I think it was about $5 (which is like kind of splurging for a dessert, but it was great on this nice day). The inside is super humble, a set of bar stools on a counter against the back wall. Nice benches outside too if it's not raining. Omg this is the best freaking coffee spot ever!!!! I'm so glad I came here on the recommendation of a far-out lyft driver. He said he drove 30 minutes to get the chai latte here. It's sooo damn good! So I learned that the owner of the coffee shop hand makes the ice cream, chai, and other ingredients at Affogato. All the coffee beans are from family owned coffee plantations, making the coffee fresh and cheap. I tried the affogato with coconut straciatella gelato and it was so perfectly balanced. The deep warm espresso blanketed the cool mound of coconut chocolate gelato for a wonderfully balanced flavor! The chai latte was a beautiful orchestra of ginger, hemp milk, light spice blend for a balanced taste. Usually chai lattes are overlooked in hardcore coffee shops but the attention to detail in the chai here just speaks love. I never had a Borgia before so I got one to go - wowww. So this is an espresso drink made with hot chocolate and fresh orange, which is exactly what the barista did. It was a lovely blend of chocolate, coffee, and tart orange in liquid form. Nate makes a great espresso from the Equator Coffee roasted by his uncle in Eugene. The espresso that I tried was great with a dark roasted chocolate and fruity flavor. I am looking forward to going back for more. You can even buy a bag of the roasted beans for $8. I assume that giveaway price will go up soon. The Habanero Peach Gelato that I tried was out of this world and just the right amount of heat. All of their gelato is made on site in small batches with local ingredients. I walked from home into St. Johns today to do some banking, visited St. Johns Farmer's Market, and ended up wandering around looking for more spots to explore and prolong this perfectly wonderful early Fall sunny Saturday. I hated to go (dragging my feet), but it was time to go home. How do I end my wanderings on a high point just so I'll have perfect memories and not darken the day I wondered? Of course, Affogato! I couldn't get one of the outdoor tables, unfortunately, but I found the interior very attractive and relaxing. I ordered a regular Salted Caramel gelato with waffle cone. The menus are hand-chalked with large lettering and hung low enough that it was all very easy to read and no need to use smaller printed menus; very nice. The counter person was charming and totally natural and complimented me on my ease in ordering my ice cream treat, but when you're an ice cream freak, ordering ice cream clearly is a highly-honed skill. The Salted Caramel gelato was the obvious choice for me, but the "Lime In The Coconut" flavor was tempting as well (especially naming the ice cream after one of Harry Nilsson's songs) nearly sealed the deal, but the Salted Caramel finally won the day. Such heaven with perfectly balance of flavor. I really savored this gelato. The waffle cone was not too soft and not too crisp and complemented the ice cream to a "T." I think the Salted Caramel is at least at the same level or even better than this flavor I sampled at Salt and Straw. It's all obviously a labor of love. Affogato also serves what looks to be quality coffee and coffee drinks, so this would also be a great stopover for that morning mix! As I was getting ready to leave, I spotted another place to visit in the near future, so let's hope we have a few more Saturdays like this in which to enjoy all that is wonderful about Fall and wandering about St. John's. In the meantime, I know where I'm coming back to when it's time to indulge my ice cream fetish. read more

After dinner with my family at 48 North Pizza across the street, I needed a way to get out of the food coma I was in and figured I could definitely use some caffeine to help me stay up to do some studying for school. I've been here before for gelato, which are awesome by the way, but forgotten whether or not they served good espresso. My husband prefers hemp milk for his lattes so he was stoked that they had it, which not many places do. I typically go with a soy based mocha or latte, this time it was a mocha. I ordered the smallest size and it was strong, but really good... I mean good enough that it kept me up pretty late and it wasn't watered down like Starbucks in my opinion. Starbucks never keeps me up unless I order extra extra extra shots of espresso. Definitely the real deal here if you like good quality, strong espresso drinks. I was actually very excited to try this place since I've been into trying local coffee shops. I love Affogato and was very satisfied with theirs. It was more of the service I was a bit disappointed with. It didn't feel very welcoming. My sister and I felt rushed to order - it was our first time in and I knew what I wanted to order but my sister needed a minute. Another customer had come in while the barista was making our drinks and it seems the customer rushed her a bit more by handing her his cup. Affogato is my favorite coffee shop in a neighborhood full of great coffee. I love it both as a morning coffee stop, as well as an evening dessert hangout. I don't really drink drip coffee, so I can't comment on that, but their espresso is my favorite in town. It's bolder than most local espressos, while still maintaining an impressive depth and complexity and never crossing the line towards the bitter "smokiness" of the third-rate espresso served at larger coffee chains. As for the dessert side of things, the house-made gelato served here is quite good. Flavors come and go, but their best, salted caramel, is almost always on hand. I especially enjoy the affogato (espresso + gelato of your choice), even if it's late in the day and I shouldn't be consuming so much caffeine. That salted caramel gelato pairs perfectly with their espresso. If they happen to have peanut butter gelato, I'd recommend that in the affogato as well. My only complaint (and this is a minor one) is the lack of consistency among baristas. The espresso is always good, but if you order a cappuccino, for instance, from different baristas, you may get a very different drink each time. I thought I had found the best cappuccino in town, but the next time I ordered one, I basically got an 8 oz. latte. A very good latte, mind you, but not the heavenly cappuccino I got the previous time. Anyway, minor gripes here, and I'm still giving Affogato five stars because I love it that much. read more

The best thing about this gelato place was the person working here, with a close second of the actual gelato and affogato. The worker was so friendly and so helpful and since we were the only people in the store, she let us try every gelato flavors available. I noticed that a lot of these flavors are coconut milk-based, and the flavor of coconut really comes through. If you don't like coconut or coconut milk flavor, stick with vanilla or chocolate. I got the chocolate and it was very rich, you definitely want to drink with a strong cup of coffee or espresso. My husband got the vanilla affogato and was underwhelmed, he thinks a better option would've been just to have a seperate gelato and espresso at the same time. We make the short drive from SE to sip the sweetness being served up. Usually we are coming or going from Sauvie's Island but a drive here is well worth it. The gelato is always so smooth and the flavors are so spot on. The place is small but there are a few tables out front of the weather is nice. You can always huddle in the booth to enjoy your cup. The service has always been quick and friendly. We even grab a bag of beans since they will gladly grind them for you (make sure you know the type of grind you need). So I really wanted some gelato, not ice cream, but gelato. The BF and I were visiting a friend in St. John's a few nights ago and I had been wanting to try this place out for a while, based on Yelp reviews. We walked the few blocks over after dinner, so I could satisfy my craving. Easy to find in downtown St. John's. I was actually kind of surprised that it was smaller than I expected, but still a nice atmosphere. The shop had a wonderful aroma of coffee, which I loved. I definitely want to go back and try both a Chai as well as a latte. Also, a really nice woman was working that night, and kindly answered my many questions, and told me that the Chai latte is probably the best she has every had, anywhere. But back to the gelato.....they had five flavors, and I tried two: the Salted Caramel and the Mint Chocolate Chip. I really liked them both, but went for the Mint Chocolate Chip. I was in gelato heaven. I was amazed how really minty the flavor was and also how incredibly fresh. You could tell that they used fresh mint leaves, and a lot of them. It was so delicious - probably the best Mint Chocolate Chip gelato I have ever eaten. If you like that flavor, I would highly recommend it. Another bonus, was that they had a coffee flavor that my BF has been looking for, for a while - Mocha Java. We bought a pound (at a very reasonable price, $9.00) and he told me that this is some of the best coffee he has ever tasted. We will definitely go back and buy more of that. It figures that this little gem would show up just as I was departing the St. Johns neighborhood, but I'm so glad it did! We waltzed in on an early Saturday morning and grabbed Americanos to go. While the awesome guy (whose name I didn't get) was making them, I asked him a hundred questions and he answered them all with a smile. His uncle brews the coffee in small batches down in Eugene and that sold me right there. Plus? $8 for a bag? Yeah, sold. Done. My lady whipped out her debit card to pay and the dude was like, "Oh, we don't take cards but if you don't have cash you can just come back later or tomorrow or next week. Whenever." What? How awesomely nice was that? I had cash so it wasn't necessary, but we both thought that was adorable and old fashioned and not something that is EVER said these days. Since it was early, I used every ounce of resistance I have and decided to wait until later to try the gelato. Later came in about eleven hours and I wandered back in for some treats. I sampled a lot of the flavors but settled on the maple bacon whatnot. SO GOOD. You can really tell that each flavor is made is small batches and with a lot of love. Another reason to love St. John's. On the neighborhood's charming "Main St." (N. Lombard) this gelato and coffee shop opened up. Next door they have some well established competition in Anna Banana's, but of course they are focused on espresso beverages. On my visit, I was too late for my personal biorhythm to try coffee or an "Affogato," but I would've liked to. The gelato flavors I had were excellent and I appreciated how friendly the gentleman was about providing information and as many tastes as I needed. Prices feel like a bargain with $3.25 being the "medium" size. I can't wait to try a made in store waffle cone someday. I can think of no complaints. I have a new coffee shop, plus a place to get gelato. Thank you, God. They have a great selection of gelato and each flavor is complex and perfectly executed. Also, they don't use a commercial base- it's truly crafted from scratch. Their coffee is organic, fair trade, shade grown "Equator Coffee" roasted in Eugene, OR, by their uncle. They make a variety of espresso drinks and sell the coffee beans as well. They have done a fabulous job with the remodel. Beautiful shellacked countertops and tree slice tables. They gave it a friendly paint job and it is meticulously clean. Three owners, two of whom we met last night. Very friendly, and they seem stoked to be a part of the neighborhood.
