UPDATE: I wrote an earlier 3 star review citing disappointment because of super loud music and nothing being in the pastry case. WELL. We stopped in today and I've updated my review to 5 stars. I had to wait for a considerable amount of time for a couple of drip coffees..but the barista was aware, flashing me a big smile and acknowledging that I was there. (He was making some fancy drinks for the people ahead). I ordered 2 different kinds of bagels and they were excellent. A very enjoyable visit! We stopped in to simply grab a latte at a new shop, as I enjoy trying as much shops as I can, and got stuck playing Donkey Kong on this unique game system. It was fun!!! A little hard to figure out what the buttons do but we finally figured it out. Enjoyed an ice latte to go and brought my own cup. It was delicious! Service simple and kind. New location at 5927 SE Foster Rd - across from Fopo tavern and close to Street Disco. The new location is super cute and the vibes are vibing. Parking is so much easier and the curb appeal makes it look a lot less sketchy. We went in on a Saturday morning and all tables were full. The coffee is ... I would say good, with room for improvement. The bagel sandwich was delicious, but it's hard to compete with Henry Higgins just down the way. I think this will become my new go to spot for wfh days, a trusty place with good food/coffee. The staff were so friendly and it's truly a neighborhood staple. read more

This location is so cute. Staff was beyond friendly and very welcoming! Tried their spicy chai with oat milk; did add vanilla for it to not be too spicy and it was perfection! I also got to try their turkey pesto croissant and was finger licking good! They have inside and outside seating. I love everything about Speedboat coffee. The staff is incredibly friendly, the ambience is very warm and inviting and the food is outstanding! They make great use of their space with both outdoor and indoor seating. Their coffee is wonderful. I particularly loved their special that day called the "HVAC" made with honey, cinnamon and 4 shots of espresso. I ordered it on ice which was one of the best coffees I have had recently. There is no doubt that this is one of the best coffee shops into the Foster-Powell neighborhood of Portland. They have a selection of tasty pastries by Jen's Pastries but they also have some of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. I introduce you to their bolos breakfast sandwiches. I am 110% serious this bolo bread is amazing! And with scrumptious bacon, perfectly cooked egg, and a very unique Sriracha mayo this is one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had the pleasure of tasting! And don't forget that they also make some great bagel sandwiches and other items such as their veggie croissant. I was actually quite impressed by their veggie croissant as well. It was delicious! What a cute little cafe! The inside vibe and decor was charming and inviting. The barista was super friendly and attentive. I went there during the covid quarantine and there was only one guy working while there was a line waiting at the door, lots of customers who ordered food and multiple drinks and he was upbeat the whole time! I was impressed . The coffee was delicious. It was a pleasant surprise to have oat milk as an option, since that isn't a milk alternative you see very much. I love the shop. It is a nice quiet little spot that serves up Stumptown the right way. There are places to serve Stumptown that do not know how to do their coffee proper. Not going to name names, but there are some places that shouldn't do Stumptown. You know who you are! The staff is friendly all around. Now I have made myself known as a regular, they know my drink, and I don't like that. It's rude, just kidding. I like to switch it on them occasionally just to mess with them. It's fun times. Another regular talked up their breakfast sandwich to me one day, so I gave it a try, and it is very delicious. It's simple yet exquisite. This place is a solid three stars all day long. Nothing amazing and nothing terrible just ur average coffee shop. I would have appreciated a better bean. They use stumptown and I don't care for stumptown. I had an americano to start and had it for here. I did love that they had saucers for the for here mugs which is aLways nice. I only saw two wall plugs for ppl wanting to get work done so that can complicate things but otherwise it was work friendly as well. read more

Very hip coffee stop in the FoPo (Foster-Powell neighborhood). Portland, Oregon has a ton of coffee houses / cafes, but this one stands out. It's hard to find Free WiFi in Southeast Portland, but they have that, too. The staff is cute and funny, and there is this cool retro speed boat theme. I think that they serve Long Bottom brand coffee, and their pastries are pretty good and cheap. Downside: the location has had a series of coffee shops there before it, and they haven't done as well. I hope that this one stays. It sure beats Dutch Brothers or Starbucks. read more

Stopped here on a lark as it was the nearest non-franchise coffee shop in the area I happened to be. I ordered a 20 oz triple shot Americano which cost $3. Not outrageous, but a little more expensive than what I'm used to. They serve Stumptown which is never a bad thing and they knew how to prepare it so it tasted just fine. The atmosphere was interesting...not necessarily in a good or bad way. There is a small, two person sofa along with a few lounge chairs in the seating area (which is definitely a comfy bonus) as well as some bar stools facing a not-so-scenic area of Foster. There were some umbrella-less benches in front of the shop that also faced Foster. All in all, my experience was good, just not particularly great. I would come back if I were in the area, but I won't be going out of my way to come back any time soon. read more

When I moved to Portland six months ago, I didn't know where to get a good cup of coffee. This place was right down the street from where I was first staying, so it was one of the first places I tried. Their cozy atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious bagel sanwiches kept me coming back. And even though I've moved since first arriving, and don't live close-by anymore, it's still my go-to coffee shop when I get a hankering for some good coffee. The specialty coffees are great (especially the Mexican Mocha) and they also feature blended smoothie-type drinks. My favorite of those is called "Monkey Milk" - frothy chocolate banana milk, which I get with a shot of espresso thrown in for good measure. An excellent treat! They have free wi-fi like any good coffee shop should. There are accessible outlets for plugging your laptop in; it's cozy and mellow during the day, with music that's not overwhelming, and the decor is kitchy retro speedboat-themed. The staff is friendly, accomodating and they are genuinely pleased to have your business, They also offer cheap Ho-Ho snackies and free lollipops! Oh, and did I mention they have a drive-thru as well? The only thing I don't like about Speedboat coffee is -- it's only open until 2pm! read more

Here I sit broken hearted staring at a sweating, full, 20oz iced soy latte. Its been in my possesion for an hour and I just cant drink it. Why you ask? Well...after waiting exactly 9 minutes after placing my order I received a drink that tastes bitter and awful. I believe the issue here was how the shots were pulled. The cafe part of Speed Boat was very quiet I saw a man and his son, and one woman who only got a pastry but I heard shots being pulled over and over and over. And like I said I waited 9 minutes so I think the barista was having issues. I was all for giving Speed Boat another go, and was nudged in to use the 50% off coupon that got left under my windshield wiper. Sadly, I dont think I will be back. read more

I moved from Sellwood to Damascus. I love it except for one thing. Good coffee in the right environment is hard to find. Speedboat is the closest awesome coffee shop to Damascus (off of SE 52nd and Foster its a drive). This place does coffee right. Whoever put this business together has perfect form, function and comfort for a coffee shop. They know exactly what a coffee shop at 6am should be and are the last oasis of coffee sophistication heading east of SE 39th in Portland (sorry Bi-Partisan Cafe but you just don't hit the note quite as well). From great drip to a willingness to do a manual timed pour of coffee over Stumptown beans Speedboat Coffee honors the potential of a plain old cup of joe. Wi-Fi, warmth, comfort and their basic nibble bagel food is perfect in its taste as well as simplicity. I am a Portland coffee snob. The worst kind though. Not a frappe/mocha/latte sipping swizzle stick coffee drinker but a black coffee drinker. I can't stand poor beans lipsticked up and therefore can only be satisfied by simple beans done well. Speedboat Coffee serves only cups of well priced satisfaction. I'm the kind of guy who leaves the Pacific Northwest for say Oklahoma or Florida and literally questions the civilized intellect of these states given their coffee bean tastes and preferences. Dunkin Donuts and Panera are evil polluters filling the mongrel taste buds of a less civilized culture of beings with a low coffee I.Q.. I take coffee seriously and Speedboat Coffee gets what I want without me having to say a word. I personally think they do a better job than all but the SW 2nd Stumptown for both taste and atmosphere. If I went anywhere in the world and walked through the doors of something as well put together as Speedboat I would see it as an embassy of good taste. I drive a lot during the work day and have many drive through coffee stands throughout SE, some are okay, most are downright terrible. I decided to give the drive thru at Speedboat coffee a try this afternoon. The barista came right to the window and was very friendly. She noticed a car seat in my backseat and informed me that they have a children's play area inside. I ordered an iced latte, which she made pretty quick. The espresso was good, not the best I've ever had - but possibly the best I've had at a drive thru. I also noticed that they have a pretty decent food selection including quinoa bagels and a caprese sandwich. I will definitely try Speedboad again soon... you should too :) read more

I'm glad that I did and I think that it'll be the first visit of many. There is a lot to like about you: your sweet little sitting space and your friendly (but not overly friendly-- I hate that...) employees, your guilty pleasure issues of Entertainment Weekly, your bagels that aren't East coast style or weird roll-like copies of East coast bagels but something different and very special... And you play good music. And you're floors look cleaner than my own. And your prices are SO reasonable: less than $4 for a coffee (with a free refill!) and a bagel with cream cheese. Pretty cool place. I hit their grand opening over the weekend for the free coffee. Turns out they have great coffee & sandwiches. Happy to see such a nice place popping up in a hood that needs it. Casual & comfortable. They had ample seating inside & out, plus a gas fireplace, decent music & a kids play room that was separate, so good if you have kids or not.
