This has been one of my go-to spots anytime I'm headed to Mt. Tabor. They have delicious coffee and tasty treats. I especially like the bold flavors of their cold brew. The breakfast sandwich is always on-point. Looking forward to coming back sometime

Contrary to most of my coffee reviews, I liked the art and the vibe of the coffeeshop over my actual matcha latte order. I had gotten some honey to sweeten the matcha latte but it needed some more sweetness. It also looks like the art/pour didn't quite come out right! I liked the seating options they had inside and the art they were selling on the walls. There was a variety of figures done by the artist and my friend and I looked at those for a while

This is one of the best hot chocolates that I've had in Portland! I don't drink coffee so I tend to go for something sweeter, and a lot of hot cocoa tastes pretty bland to me. This spot is always my go too, and a great place to study or work! Cozy feeling and great service!

This is now becoming my go to place to meet up with friends and colleagues when in Portland. This morning I had a Soy Chai Latte with some vanilla and a breakfast bagel sandwich. The chai was the best I've had here yet. The breakfast bagel did a decent job hitting the spot. Parking can be a bit of a challenge at times, like it was this morning. But the space, service, and menu options are worth it.

Wow, surprised I haven't written a review for Rain or Shine Coffee House yet. This coffee shop was one of the first locations I hung out at when I moved to Portland years ago, without a job, not knowing what to do, but wanting somewhere to read and send out resumes, besides home. I used to work at the nearby elementary school and would stop here after shifts. I've even met a local artist here and sat for a portrait in the coffee shop. So in many ways, it is a special place to me. Now why do I share all this? Most of it isn't relevant to you. You just want to know how the coffee, service, and atmosphere is. Well, I think there's something special about this coffee shop and its neighborhood vibe. As others have mentioned, it really is a gathering spot for the local community. Lots of parents from the nearby school will meet here, clubs and groups will meet for seated activities, the baristas know people by name, etc. If asked for great coffee shops to cowork at or host a book club at, this would be one of the top spots on my list. Okay, enough said about that. Here are the concrete details you want to know. There are a few parking spots out back, but mostly it is difficult-to-find street parking. The service is mostly friendly but they can get busy or be having a bad day like everyone else. The coffee is good and they have a number of specialty drinks. I've always enjoyed their food, quiches and bagels and the like. There are a variety of seating options, including an infamous green couch and cool two-person built-in tables outside. While I no longer live in the neighborhood, this is still a go-to stop for me whenever I am at Mount Tabor or driving down 60th from NE to SE. I definitely recommend making it yours too.

I came to Rain OR Shine to get some remote work done and indulge in a cup of chai. The chai was delicious and I got plenty of work done, so I'd say it was a win! The majority of the tables (the ones around the perimeter) were high with tall wooden chairs. I normally prefer lower tables, but the chairs had footrests, which made them more comfortable. There are lots of windows, bringing in lovely natural light. It was a little loud when I was there (~9-12am), which could be a pro or con depending on your work preferences. WiFi password was clearly displayed at the drink pickup counter. Their parking lot only has 4 spots (the two furthest are reserved for the eye clinic), but there is plenty of street parking, especially if you are willing to walk.

I never noticed their geographic indicator with the word OR until recently

Rain or Shine has been a fixture on Division for about 10 years now, with a temporary Covid shutdown and a change in management for their reopening. They currently appear to have limited outdoor seating and order-at-the-window service for to-go items. I don't drink much coffee, but this is exactly the kind of place I seek out when I do. Straightforward drink menu, and the website indicates that they're now serving Henry Higgins bagels, so that's a good sign that they remain committed to quality.

Rain OR Shine Coffee House is all about the Cardamom Latte! I got it decaf and with Oat Milk, but it was amazing and so perfect and cozy on a rainy & Gray Oregon Day. I also really appreciated getting to chose from famous Farina Bakery's macaron- I got the cute little "animal cookie" one with circus confetti and it was the highlight of my day. The person who helped us and took our order, was very helpful and didn't rush us and helped point out the different options. And, the general vibe was really nice, we took our time sipping on our latte's and my husband was able to do a little bit of work on his laptop and I read a fiction book. It was a really lovely experience, and that experience was recent in my mind. I have went several more times, but it has been over 8 years ago, I believe, so I'm glad to re-visit it in 2024 and I hope to be back more frequently! But, one theme that always stayed with me about this coffee shop over the years is the Cardamom Latte!

Discovered this gem after a hike at nearby Mount Tabor Park. The staff were super friendly, the drinks were all tasty (loved the lemonade and the unique espressoda), the seating area bright and nice, and even a small parking lot. A good day!

The last two times I've tried to come here it's been closed without advance notice, just a hand drawn sign in the door. Very annoying.

Bernstein's is a popular spot - having arrived at the opening time we felt lucky to secure a table. Here is what we ordered: bagel and lox, garden bagel and raisin smear bagel; as well as coffee. Everything was so good that even the picky eater amongst us had no complaints. We also enjoyed conversing with other patrons at Bernstein's. Having quickly deciphered that we are visiting from out of town (probably by overhearing us talk - the tables are very close together) they immediately made us feel welcome and recommended places to visit around Portland. We usually don't talk to strangers, so being pulled into a friendly conversation was a different kind of experience for us, but the one that we enjoyed with gratitude. We happened to find this spot along the way, and the bagels looked really promising, so we had to stop. We grabbed some plain bagels, which were tasty and good flavor. I also ordered a bagel with egg, but that one kind of threw me off. I'm not a fan of spongy eggs--they always feel a little fake to me . That said, I was hungry, so I still ate it. Overall, it was a good stop and definitely satisfied our bagel craving before hitting the road. I'd come back for the plain bagels, just maybe skip the egg next time.

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd give a Portland bagel five stars…read more A few things to note here: 1. Oregon is a miserable state for bagels. Arguably the best in the genre here exists in Hood River, and it's about par with Northeast supermarket bagels or the British Columbia approximation of a Montreal bagel. It's fine, but far better than the bagel-shaped rolls of white bread you'll encounter here. 2. Bentley's is in a neighborhood dense with bagels, but light on good bagels. The names of its bagel-making neighbors are familiar to the locals, but they're also a big part of the reason why expats go out of their way to travel across town and wait in lines for bagels that might be passable replicas of those they remember. My family is from New Jersey, which has its own (albeit unlauded) bagel culture entirely, and has spent more than a decade here lodging bagel complaints. Their last straw was a place in St. John's that moved to the art museum and then to a place by the Widmer brewery that sort of made a decent bagel, but charged about $3 for the privilege of eating one. Not with cream cheese, not with lox or whitefish--$3 for the bagel itself. Sirs, you can go fuck yourselves with that level of extortion for what's essentially a Shop-Rite+ bagel. Bentley's has been much more reasonable and consistent. In a town that considers boiling a bagel an artisanal option and not, in fact, a default, Bentley's gets its chewy exterior and density down. While I'm slightly disappointed that the dough lacks some of the complexity of its back-east contemporaries--especially on a coast where the tang of a sourdough is approached with such pride--Bentley's gets the consistency of its bagels down. It comes down to sound fundamentals: Bentley's makes only eight varieties of bagels, but includes right-coast vestiges like salt and onion. More importantly, though a single bagel is still $2 (slight sticker shock from back east), that gets into the buck-and-change range quickly when you get a baker's dozen for $21 (roughly $1.60 per). I haven't gotten the cream cheese or lox here because I like making life as difficult on myself as possible. The best cream cheese I've found here is in Hillsboro. The best lox and whitefish? Astoria. So if a bagel spot is going to be out of my way anyway, I may as well start the weekend picking up a bag on 21st street, hitting 26 for cream cheese, and popping up to Astoria for a room for the weekend. After nearly a decade and a half in this state, Bentley's has helped my family shorten the bagel map a bit and given us the best option the Portland metro has to option. Before you give up on bagels entirely and start believing things like "Hmm, maybe biscuits and gravy ARE worth my time," pop into Bentley's on a quiet Sunday morning and try it for yourself.
