Ocean Roll, in all of its majesticness
Scott L.

Rarely am I in the St Johns area but glad I stopped by here. Just outside of the main area and thankfully across the street from a BoA, there's a cute yellow shop on the corner of . Everyone had raved about the Ocean Roll here so I had to see what this was about. An absolutely massive cardamom lemon flavored roll, made fresh daily and thankfully there was plenty in stock so I got two. This thing immediately hits the taste buds and unexpected flavor. Rolls, especially cinnamon rolls always seem to have the flavor, so to have a much lighter side of the flavor spectrum to hit, it really has an unexpected brilliance to it. The size was perfect for sharing and I'm glad I got two to come back to the next morning and warm up. Keep those Ocean Rolls coming back, they're incredible!

I was beyond stoked to find out about this Sparrow location in Portland! Fresher tasting ocean rolls than the downtown Stumptown locations and absolutely delicious. They have an assortment of other pastries available as well. Coffee is delicious - cardamom latte especially! [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have indoor and outdoor seating though tables are very limited.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Pretty standard fare coffee shop vibes inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Staff is very friendly and service was prompt. Parking is via street parking. Prices are a little steep, paying at least $5 for a pastry and anything fancier than a drip coffee. But I'll take that over having to drive all the way to Bend!

Order: lemon croissant, and vanilla latte hot ProsS the croissant was really really good! Not super tart or super sweet. It was just right. The latte was okay not my fav. Cons: n/a

You could tell me that Sparrow Bakery sold nothing but the Ocean Roll and I'd believe you. This is a very specific craving in which I used to drive to Bend for but now I only have to cross town to get it. Ocean roll is a cinnamon roll on steroids. It's elevated, it's got the cardamon crispies that you Hoover into your mouth because it would be a waste of precious gold if you don't. It goes incredibly well with tea. It's too big for me to finish in one sitting so I get to enjoy more in the afternoon or if I have willpower, the next day.

I absolutely enjoyed my visit to this location. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It has seating indoor and outdoor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They were quick to take my order and provided excellent customer service. I enjoyed the variety of items on the menu. I really enjoyed the bacon breakfast sandwich, 10/10. The Lox Bagel was phenomenal as well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere and vibe are welcoming, and the area feels safe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

This was our first time to Sparrow, and my husband and I loved it! Between us two, we got a chocolatine, an ocean roll, a vanilla bean latte, and a caramel latte, and everything was so good. The pastries, especially, were fantastic. The chocolatine (a rolled croissant with chocolate chips) was still warm and was beautifully laminated. The ocean roll (a vanilla cardamom roll) had a lovely light floral cardamom flavor, which was so nice when combined with the fluffy and partially caramelized dough. We loved these pastries and will definitely be back. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We stayed while we enjoyed our pastries and coffee, and it was a nice place to hang out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'd definitely recommend coming here!

My husband tried an Ocean Roll at a Yelp event and has been wanting to bring me here ever since. Now that I've tried one, I'll be dreaming of them. I'm a major cardamom lover and the balance of spice and sweet in this giant roll is just right. I'd honestly say balance is the main word for everything I got. In addition to the Ocean Roll, I got a lemon twist, an iced pumpkin spice latte and a non-bacon breakfast sandwich. The pumpkin spice latte didn't have a ton of pumpkin flavor, but it was a delightful fall spice latte. I don't like my coffee too sweet, and this was just right for me. The breakfast sandwich was delicious, too. The crunch of the croissant accentuated the soft avocado, cheese and egg inside. I've been thinking about it ever since and am honestly holding myself back from going back as I write this... wish me luck

A sunny little coffee shop in the St.John area. I've had their bakery elsewhere before but I can confirm that it's better right at the source. They got a pretty comprehensive pastry showcase, as well as breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches (apparently, they make their bagels in house as well!). I went with their Ocean Roll, Waldorf Sandwich, and a 16 oz Americano - a big treat to say the least. The Ocean Roll was decadent. The taste of cardamom really stood out, making the roll a little sweet and a little savory; very unique! The Waldorf Sandwich was their hand-rolled croissant filled with chicken salad. Their croissant was on the breadier end of croissants but still buttery and worked great as a sandwich. They're very generous with the filling as well, huge chunks of chicken and apples, making for a refreshing and filling salad. The sandwich was big, can easily be shared. Got a bite of their Lox Bagel as well and it's tantalizingly good. Their Americano was decent but nothing to write home about. Will be back for their baked goods for sure!

Great little bakery in St John's! The bacon breakfast sandwich changed my life. We also got a couple of their pastries (the lemon twist and ocean roll were both yummy). [[HIGHLIGHT]]It does get pretty packed on the weekends if you want to sit inside so keep that in mind![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I was pleasantly surprised at the size of this croissant. Crispy, crunchy, & sweet from the pistachio. Would have tasted even better if it were slightly warm. The cardamom latte was sweet and tasted as it sounds. I would come back to try more of their drinks and pastries!

Was looking for something quick for breakfast before our long drive home. The Sparrow was opened early, had our to-go to favorites... english muffins, banana bread (sold in a slice or loaf), cinnamon roll (sold individually or 4 pack), cute holiday sugar cookies, and more cookies on display along with scones and bagels. Too bad their oven wasn't working so no hot sandwiches but no big deal, their lox bagel was good! Service was friendly and fast. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love their setup, merch, and will visit again.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Ty team!

This cafe was cute and we tried a few pastries. I thought the croissants were good but definitely a bit different than your traditional flaky croissant. I would almost describe them as bready.

The Ocean Roll is amazing and so are the rest of their pastries. I typically go here mainly for the pastries but their lattes are also pretty good. The interior is really small so don't expect to sit inside but there is some additional seating outside on nice days however I typically just grab it to go. Service is typically quick and nice so moves well on those busy sunny weekends.

These Ocean (Cardamom) buns are the bomb!

We visited Twisted Croissant to pick up some treats to tide us over on our drive back up to…read moreSeattle. Walking in less than an hour before closing, we were surprised to see most of the items still in stock! We ended up picking four things to try: Vanilla Bean Kouign Amann ($7) - This pasty has a sweet yet salty exterior that's complementary in flavor rather than clashing. It's accentuated with a crunchy glazed and caramelized sugar layer that's on the sweeter side. The interior is interesting. There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. I'm sure it has just as many calories too! It's quite sweet, although not nearly to the level of the kouign amann. Overall, it's just a really rich and decadent cake. (4/5) Blueberry + Vanilla Cream Brioche Donut w/ Earl Grey ($6) - The top of the pastry is dressed with a cream that has an unmistakably strong bergomot earl grey taste. I wish there was way more cream - there's essentially only a dab on top! The rest of the donut is filled with a custardy light blueberry and vanilla jam. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. The cruffin base is buttery in taste and great lamination even when filled with the custard and rose/raspberry cream. This is a heavy cruffin that's very filling. (5/5) Twisted Croissant certainly does some some really delectable treats. It's one of my favorite bakeries in Portland!

Crispy, airy, buttery and oh, so delicate, my raspberry cruffin was the dessert dreams are made of! If you've never had a cruffin... what are you waiting for?! It's croissant dough baked into a muffin shape. And the particular version I ordered today was filled with sweet and creamy vanilla custard and raspberry jelly. My mouth is watering describing this now, a true sign I'll be returning to experience this delicacy time and time again. There are three locations of Twisted Croissant in Portland, and this is the only one I've visited. The interior has a classic Parisian bakery vibe, clad in white subway tile from floor to ceiling. The bakery case in front of the store is beautifully stocked with fresh pastries, perfect for enjoying with a cup of coffee or tea. However, be advised, there are only two tables in the back of their public space, so it's not particularly inviting space to sit and enjoy your breakfast. Given the location, I assume there is outdoor seating in the summer months, but don't quote me on that. Regardless, run here if you haven't been. These baked goods are worth the visit!

They have a great selection of pastries. The croissants are so amazing. You can tell it's a good croissant from all the fluffy layers. It's got a good egg wash on top which makes it crispy on top and soft and buttery on the inside. I also had to get the tiramisu latte. It was made to perfection. I like my coffee sweet so this was right up my ally. I also got a cookie and brownie. When you heat up the cookie and brownie a bit, it's a little taste of heaven!
