This was our first time visiting and there were plenty of free street parking around. We were immediately drawn to the bright yellow store sign and decor. There were limited marble tables inside but more tables outside - perfect for a sunny day and for furry friends. We loved the mosaic at the entrance and we were greeted with happy staff walking in and helpful with recommendations. There were so many yummy pastries to choose from but they are famous for their croissant rolls. We got the classic Ocean Roll and it was light, flakey, and a lovely cardamom flavor. All the baked goods were fresh and very reasonably priced. A must-visit bakery spot in St.Johns if you're visiting! Came here on a lazy saturday and was not disappointed! They had ton of great options from pastries to food and drink and I was able to try all three. I got a chai latte, the breakfast sandwhich with a poached egg, and three pastries the cardamom ocean roll, lemon twist, and the pistachio croissant. Everything was really delicious and I especially applaud the Ocean Roll. I've never had something so cardamom-y and it was quite a stand out. The only thing I would change at all is that my croissant was a tad bit over toasted but it was still good! The staff was nice and there was a chill atmosphere. We felt very comfortable staying and chatting a while. One thing to note is that parking can be a little sparse especially if there is an event going on. Sparrow is fantastic. Do we sometimes drive from Battle Ground to St John's in Oregon just for an ocean roll? Yep! They are that good. If you haven't tried one just do it. The service is prompt and order and pay at the counter. The ambiance is nothing crazy as their Portland shop is pretty small but if you want a little classier dine in experience you'll have to go to their Bend location. Rarely am I in the St Johns area but glad I stopped by here. Just outside of the main area and thankfully across the street from a BoA, there's a cute yellow shop on the corner of . Everyone had raved about the Ocean Roll here so I had to see what this was about. An absolutely massive cardamom lemon flavored roll, made fresh daily and thankfully there was plenty in stock so I got two. This thing immediately hits the taste buds and unexpected flavor. Rolls, especially cinnamon rolls always seem to have the flavor, so to have a much lighter side of the flavor spectrum to hit, it really has an unexpected brilliance to it. Pretty standard fare coffee shop vibes inside. Staff is very friendly and service was prompt. Parking is via street parking. Amazing banana bread. Moist and tastes just like a perfectly ripened banana with a hint of cardamom. The outside has a light crusting of sugar which enhances the natural sweetness and adds a delightful crunch to the texture. The shortbread cookie is nice a buttery but the frosting was a bit hard. The bacon breakfast sandwich had a poached egg, bacon, avocado, arugula aioli, fresh arugula, and is served on a fresh baked croissant. The lamination on the croissant is wonderful-light fluffy layers with a nice flakiness. The arugula adds a peppery balance to the thick sliced bacon, the schmeared avocado makes it less messy to eat, and the runny yolk of the poached eggs brings a creamy balance to this delicious morning sandwich. Only small complaint-the singular poached eggs brings is only in the center of the sandwich. Suggestion - consider over easy egg for better coverage. read more

This is a very specific craving in which I used to drive to Bend for but now I only have to cross town to get it. Ocean roll is a cinnamon roll on steroids. It's elevated, it's got the cardamon crispies that you Hoover into your mouth because it would be a waste of precious gold if you don't. It goes incredibly well with tea. This was our first time to Sparrow, and my husband and I loved it! Between us two, we got a chocolatine, an ocean roll, a vanilla bean latte, and a caramel latte, and everything was so good. The pastries, especially, were fantastic. The chocolatine (a rolled croissant with chocolate chips) was still warm and was beautifully laminated. The ocean roll (a vanilla cardamom roll) had a lovely light floral cardamom flavor, which was so nice when combined with the fluffy and partially caramelized dough. We loved these pastries and will definitely be back. We stayed while we enjoyed our pastries and coffee, and it was a nice place to hang out. I'd definitely recommend coming here! read more

My husband tried an Ocean Roll at a Yelp event and has been wanting to bring me here ever since. Now that I've tried one, I'll be dreaming of them. I'm a major cardamom lover and the balance of spice and sweet in this giant roll is just right. I'd honestly say balance is the main word for everything I got. In addition to the Ocean Roll, I got a lemon twist, an iced pumpkin spice latte and a non-bacon breakfast sandwich. The pumpkin spice latte didn't have a ton of pumpkin flavor, but it was a delightful fall spice latte. I don't like my coffee too sweet, and this was just right for me. The breakfast sandwich was delicious, too. The crunch of the croissant accentuated the soft avocado, cheese and egg inside. A sunny little coffee shop in the St.John area. I've had their bakery elsewhere before but I can confirm that it's better right at the source. They got a pretty comprehensive pastry showcase, as well as breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches (apparently, they make their bagels in house as well!). I went with their Ocean Roll, Waldorf Sandwich, and a 16 oz Americano - a big treat to say the least. The Ocean Roll was decadent. The taste of cardamom really stood out, making the roll a little sweet and a little savory; very unique! The Waldorf Sandwich was their hand-rolled croissant filled with chicken salad. Their croissant was on the breadier end of croissants but still buttery and worked great as a sandwich. They're very generous with the filling as well, huge chunks of chicken and apples, making for a refreshing and filling salad. The sandwich was big, can easily be shared. Got a bite of their Lox Bagel as well and it's tantalizingly good. Their Americano was decent but nothing to write home about. Will be back for their baked goods for sure! read more

Was looking for something quick for breakfast before our long drive home. The Sparrow was opened early, had our to-go to favorites... english muffins, banana bread (sold in a slice or loaf), cinnamon roll (sold individually or 4 pack), cute holiday sugar cookies, and more cookies on display along with scones and bagels. Cardamom buns, cardamom knots, cardamom twists - call them what you want - they are my kryptonite! At The Sparrow Bakery, they call them the Ocean Bun. Not a sweet as a traditional cinnamon bun that is topped with way too much icing, a cardamom bun made with laminated croissant dough, has just the right amount of sweet and the hint of vanilla and cardamom take it over the top! Up until now, I have only indulged while in Hood River (Pine Street Bakery) and White Salmon (White Salmon Bakery) and love them so much that I would bring them home, wrap carefully and freeze because they were not available anywhere in Portland. Oh, my Yelp friends, why did you have to tell me about the Ocean buns? It's easy to resist when they are an hour away, but right in St. John's? I'm doomed. In addition to the Ocean (cardamom) buns, they have excellent breakfast sandwiches, always a fave of mine. My typical breakfast is a cup off strong coffee with a little cream, so once in awhile I like to get a breakfast sandwich on the weekends. Their bacon and egg sandwich on a croissant, dressed with aioli, is delish. They will even scramble the egg for me which is the only way I can eat an egg. Lots of other yummy and unique stuff in the counter like a pistachio croissant, a chocolatere (think cinnamon bun but with chocolate chips), lemon poppy scones, delicious and beautifully decorated shortbread cookies. Even home-made English muffins; trust me, they are worth it. Delicious coffee drinks, too! Of course I go for the cardamom latte. Fun, bright space, lots of black and white with pops of cheerful yellow. I love this place! Best bakery in Portland for pastries made with laminated dough!! During my last visit to Bend I was sad I didn't get to make it out to the Sparrow Bakery so when I heard about them opening up another location in St. Johns I took it as a sign that I FINALLY need to check them out. Super central on lombard with the other food carts you probably won't miss Sparrow since it will be the place with a line out the door. Line goes by pretty quickly but they are allowing one group at a time inside and then once you order they have a system for you to exit and then they call your name at their open door/window when it's ready. Their pastries do run you $5+ which isn't the cheapest pastry you can buy but it's worth the weekend treat. I ended up trying their infamous ocean roll (similar to a cinnamon roll/croissant but slightly spicier) and the pistachio croissant. Both are pretty decadent and denser than what I expected. They were still flaky but not your standard croissant. The pistachio is a unique croissant so I had to get it and they did not skimp out on the filling! I can see the hype around the ocean roll and I will get it again when the cinnamon roll craving hits but I will likely try other pastries since they have quite the array to choose from. I also tried their vanilla bean latte and it was pretty standard. Need to try their Sparrow chai next time as well. I was also eyeing their breakfast sandwiches but wasn't craving it this time around so I will be sure to come again to finally try it and some other new pastries. read more

The Ocean Roll is our favorite. It's a cardamom roll that is crispy and flaky, remotely like a cinnamon roll but less sweet, less messy, more healthy. Who needs cinnamon rolls, after you've become a Sparrow Cardamon Roll convert. It takes me a half hour to drive to Sparrow Bakery in St. John's. BEWARE: They close at 3pm, so come early. If you've never been here, they are in the building behind the food carts. There's street parking on Richardson. The holiday shortbread cookies are really yummy. Really disappointed when we visited this location on a weekday at lunchtime. We visited to specifically order two items, the Monte Cristo sandwich and their Ham, Thyme & Gruyere Croissant, but when we looked at their menu inside, those weren't listed and the menu was much smaller than the one on their website. I know they have another location out in Bend, but their website only has one menu so we assumed it was the same at both locations. Not so. When we asked the cashier about the difference in the menus she told us the online menu is for Bend and this location has a smaller menu. When we politely suggested the cashier inform management about this issue with the menu discrepancy and perhaps add a note on the website about it, or better yet, list both menus online, the cashier told us we should just email the bakery ourselves. We pointed out that she's an employee and it should be much easier for her to relay this info to upper management and she again told us to just email them ourselves. During this whole interaction we were very polite & didn't get upset, so we were quite taken aback by the lack of customer service for a very simple request regarding a legitimate complaint & suggestion for improvement. Wow. I've been following Sparrow Bakery on Instagram and finally made the trip over. It's a very large space, but mostly kitchen (which is continuously pumping out the goods) with only 3 tables. So if you are considering studying or hanging out, that's probably not an option, at least not in inclement weather, there are more tables outside which would be a great summer option. We started with the ocean roll and a cinnamon knot. The ocean roll was so soft and pillowy with a beautiful crunchy layer of caramelized sugar on the bottom. It had a pretty strong cardamom flavor, so if that isn't your thing then I wouldn't recommend it. I, however, found it to be absolute perfection. I was even more surprised by the cinnamon knot. It was like a cinnamon roll, but somehow better, even without the frosting - what? Why didn't I miss the frosting? It had a beautiful texture, including some crunchy sugar on top, and a very strong cinnamon flavor. My daughter had a bagel and loved it. My husband got their breakfast sandwich which is greens, a poached egg, and bacon on a croissant. It was so good! We both enjoyed it despite it being more up my alley than his. It seems that you can't really go wrong here! After we left I immediately tried to figure out when we could go back. I don't have any business ordering cinnamon twists because after I broke my ankle I was and due to the continued pain, am still somewhat sedentary. I used to be a cute little size 2. To my everyday horror I see that I've gained 40 pounds. To be honest, I'm depressed. So even though I knew that cinnamon twist would only make me fatter, I was in a depressed, I don't give a fuck mood. It was super good. Flaky and loads of sugar and cinnamon stuck to the clear glaze. After I was finished I was overwhelmed with anger at myself for being so weak and I was even more depressed. Wow! Yes it's a bougie, expensive, gentrified bakery, but damn the pastries are A+. Got the ocean roll which reminded me of a cronut, and also got the vegetarian egg sandwich. I was skeptical about a poached egg on a to-go sandwich, fearing it would ooze out and get messy. But it was actually easy to eat and absolutely delicious. It needed a bit of salt, so I think I'll probably get the bacon egg sandwich next time, but I'll definitely be back! I'm a huge fan of Sparrow Bakery. The Ocean roll is cardamom and sugary sweet (but not too sweet) bakery goodness. The workers in the back are busy as bees and the folks at the cash register are just lovely. I have also had the breakfast sandwich here and it's perfection. And although I'm no longer a coffee drinker, I will usually get something decaf here because it's a special treat. There's a very small seating area inside and some tables for seating outside. If you're here on a weekend morning, be prepared to stand in line (it moves quickly). The only downside to this spot is it's a tad spendy.
