This is my go-to Greek spot! They have the friendliest staff and the food is top notch. I recently went after the Troy Farmers Market on a Saturday afternoon. Heads up that they are CASH ONLY. I ordered the Chicken Shishkabob Plate, which came with chicken skewers, lemon potatoes, Pita, and tzatziki. Everything on the plate was delicious, and the chicken was nice and juicy. It also came with a Greek salad, which is one of my all-time favorites. Most places make it the American way with lettuce, but after visiting Greece, I realized it doesn't have any lettuce. It's cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, olive, and Feta. In the summer, it's especially good because it's light and refreshing. My boyfriend ordered the lamb Gyro, and it was cooked perfectly. The Greek House is a cute, homestyle, authentic Greek restaurant that pleasantly surprised me! I visited Troy on a Sunday and was unaware that most businesses closed that day. Out of the few restaurants open, my friend and I decided to come here for a meal. The decor and aesthetic is focused on the white and blue hues of Santorini, and it made for a very warm atmosphere. The owners were also an elderly couple who were both extremely cute and so attentive to me and my friend. I ordered a Lamb Gyro with Greek Fries, and the food was very fresh and authentic. The pita was crispy, and both the lamb/tzatziki sauce were very flavorful. The prices were more expensive than usual gyros; however, the cozy atmosphere, delicious food, great customer service, and the small business feel of the place really speaks to why the prices are slightly higher. Even though I am Greek that has nothing to do with this review. It was lunchtime there were only 2 tables occupied. Not a good sign. I had the Moussaka and it was tasteless and past it's time as far as being tresh. I truly hope new ownership has taken over due to the positive reviews. I sincerely hope so. Still on the hunt for my go-to Greek spot in the cap region area. While the Greek House was good, it's still not quite exactly what I'm looking for. We started out with a sampler of taramasalata (which is one of my favorites and hard to find around here....it's caviar and olive oil - and a few other ingredients - whipped up into a delicious creamy concoction), tyrokafteri (jalapeño and feta) and tzatziki (yogurt and cucumber) dips. All three dips were OK; the taramasalata was not as good as I've had it and the tyrokafteri didn't have much of a jalapeño kick that I would have liked. Tzatziki was solid. The pita was excellent; served warm. I had the vegan gyro wrap and it was similar to falafel, was a little greasy but had a decent/different flavor. Mousaka was devoured completely and had rave reviews. The gyro platter was reported as just OK - the pieces of meat were very salty and not thinly sliced as expected. Classic salad was good and fries were reported as fine. The person that waited on us was very new and the owner/operator was helping her out as much as he could while he cooked everything up. The Greek House is a tiny little hole in the wall restaurant. I got the feeling it has been here a long time. It is a Mom and Pop establishment and upon entering it feels like you have been invited to eat in Mom's kitchen. Unfortunately it seems like Mom and Pop might be nearing the end of their run and are in need of some younger assistance. They seemed over whelmed and were constantly bickering. This occured while there was only 5 people in the restaurant including myself. I checked in via Yelp and there was a pop up for a free glass of wine. I mentioned that to Pop and he acted as if he had no idea what I was saying. I ordered a Gyro platter which came with a small greek salad. The salad came with no lettuce. It was essentially a cucumber salad with onions and tomatoes. They only had oil and vinegar for dressing. It also included exactly 2 olives and 2 small pieces of feta. It was very traditional and it was fresh tasting. It was also very cheap. The gyro platter came with exactly 4 slices of lamb, grilled pita bread and tzatziki sauce. The lamb was tasty but there wasn't enough. The tzatziki was delicious. The pitas were pretty dry and tasted old. The platter was also served with fries. They were essentially steak fries like the ones offered in your grocery store freezer. They were baked and covered with parmesan and oregano. It was a noble effort to be unique. They weren't bad but I didn't love them either which is why I left several on my plate. Honestly I don't plan to return to see Mom and Pop. The food prices are not justified and they are being skimpy on purpose. The place is not without its charm. Perhaps I need to try something else next time? read more

Came here for lunch on a Saturday during the Victorian Stroll and it was nearly empty. Within 20 minutes it was packed! It is a quaint little restaurant decorated in the Greek flag colors of blue and white, with little tables and lots of artwork. Service was spotty (we were missing a knife, a napkin, our waitress never checked up on us, etc.) but generally friendly, though busy as the place filled up. I ordered the grilled sausage gyro with orange peel, which came with red onions (I had them omitted), tomatos, and Tzatziki sauce. Unexpectedly, it came with a french fry in it too. My gyro was lovely and filling, and surprisingly I didn't miss the cucumbers that come on most. The sauce wasn't too heavy on the garlic and really gave a nice mouth feel. Having never had a sausage gyro, I found it a nice change of pace with a really juicy interior and nice snap. I didn't get a lot of orange peel flavor, but how could I with the other stuff going on? The pita was deep fried sort of like a chalupa shell and it was crispy if a bit greasy. Altogether, it tasted nothing like any other gyro I have ever had, and I really enjoyed the distinction. I ordered it with a side of "Greek fries" which are just steak fries with some herbs and white stuff sprinkled on top. They were actually pretty bland despite a heavy coating of something on them, so either the herbs were expired or the white stuff wasn't feta cheese. I put salt on the fries, though ketchup would have been nice (it wasn't on the table.) My wife ordered a salad which turned out to be just cucumbers, tomatoes, and olives (she had onions omitted, and added chicken). The dressing was oil and lemon juice in separate containers on the side, and I think I would have preferred the kitchen to have dressed the salad themselves. It was sort of a Greek salad, but it turns out that she really wanted their other salad on the menu which is more "traditional" to what we think of as a Greek salad. The chicken serving was small and, per her words, dry and overcooked. It wasn't worth $3.50 by any stretch. Her side of pita came almost as pita chips and they were deep fried too. I liked them, but you couldn't use them to wrap the vegetables in the salad. For dessert, we had baklava and some cookies that they were selling outside as part of the Victorian stroll. I liked the cookie, though the baklava's syrup didn't got to the upper layers and it left it a bit dry. Prices weren't cheap, and I can't say you get a lot of food for your money, but the tastes were much different than expected (different spices, less dependency on garlic) in an enjoyable sort of way. We stopped by during the Victorian Stroll for a quick lunch and respite from the cold. The place is small inside and the menu is short. The waitress was friendly and told us the special of the day was Yvettsi lamb stew with orzo. I opted for my usual greek salad no onions or green peppers with chicken and a side of pitta bread. I like to make a kind of build your own gyro as I eat. I mistakenly ordered their Classic Greek salad which comes with no lettuce but only cucumber, tomato, green peppers, onions, Feta and olives. It was lightly dressed with olive oil when it arrived and the waitress served me lemon juice and oil on the side to dress it further if I wanted. The House Greek which I meant to order comes with romaine lettuce grape leaves and pepperoncini. Lesson learned order the house next time. The side of pitta was pan fried or grilled so it was crispy on the outside and cut into strips. This was unforeseen and made it difficult to do my usual process of stuffing the bread with salad. I wish the bread was a bit softer, not grilled and not cut into strips personally. I upgraded my salad with a side of chicken which was $3.50 on the menu. The chicken came on a skewer and was about 5 cubes squished together. The chicken was dry and not worth it in my opinion. The table that came after us ordered a 3 dip sampler which I would consider in the future. We grabbed desserts from the sidewalk outside since our waitress (the only waitress) was quite busy. Things filled up quickly as we were eating. The desserts were good and had the baklava come from the kitchen and not out front, it might have been a bit warmer and finished with more honey before serving. I don't know, but I enjoyed being able to pick it up with my fingers and it didn't completely fall apart or ooze with honey. The cookies although not usually on their menu, were a nice sandy texture made with nuts, lots of butter and sugar. Stopped by the Greek House with the family today. They were very nice and accommodating to our rag tag crew of 9 with 3 strollers, 4 kids, bags, etc. Big thanks for that. Their accommodating nature on this point was reflective of a service that was both thoughtful and warm overall. As for the place, it was pleasant enough but the floor was filthy. There were gyro pieces, pita, and tomatoes all over the place. Every other step I had to dodge a half eaten moussaka or what have you. It was probably another party like mine with crazy kids and I total get that rowdy families make messes but...sweep up a bit! A dirty floor is a really unpleasant visual when you first walk in and no fun to sit over. That aside, the food was pretty good! We got the souvlaki, the gyro, a chicken wrap, a veggie burger and the app with hummus, feta and potato spreads. All of the meat dishes were quite good and perfectly cooked. Salads and fries were also great. The one shortcoming was the veggie burger which was not so great. It was very sweet for some reason and seemed to be prepackaged. While you get a decent meal here I felt that the value was lacking a bit for the entrees. For example, the souvlaki plate was nearly $20 had only 4 cubes of meat intermingled with 3 roasted vegetable pieces in a single skewer. I would have like larger portions of the spreads though - they are served in small bowls and for the price I expected larger portions. I got a vegetarian gyro which was basically a falafel gyro. Let me preface this review with the fact that I'm biased because I love Greek food. Stumbled upon this place when we were wandering through. Had an early dinner, which was great because we had the whole place to ourselves. We got the seat in the front overlooking the street. Ambience is all Greek, all blue, everywhere with a mix of what I can only assume we're Greek tunes and some great 80's pop. I was totally sold right there before we even got our food. We got the Tiropetes to start, a heavenly cheese-filled filo treat served warm. I then opted for the Greek burger and my husband the chicken soulvaki. Greek burger was a delectable concoction of beef, garlic, spices served over a warm pita with tomato and lettuce with tzatiki. There were thick cut fries on the side also spiced. The chicken soulvaki was warm, flavorful, and totally hit the spot. We got a couple Greek desserts to go because we didn't have any room. I'm not a Greek food expert so I have no clue if it's authentic but I know good food. We had the tyrokafteri (Spicy feta cheese spread) to start. While I wouldn't classify it as spicy is was definitely great. I can't even describe correctly but the picture I uploaded will help. I had the veggie gyro and the boy had the chicken something. I loved mine and he loved his. The service was friendly and quick. The man helping us even tried to assist me in pronouncing our appetizer. I pretty much failed but it was still entertaining. This would be great for eat in and take out. The hours are also awesome. I think they are 12-9 and closed on Sunday. I'm not 100% so I don't want to post them officially. I'll check next time I'm in. When I brought my dad here, he was disappointed to find out that the cuisine is not prepared in the more modern fashion he was used to. However, it tasted WAY better. They have many options to chose from all of which are prepared traditionally. The owner has a vast knowledge of Greek food and loves to serve it. Also, prices are super modest! I thought about moving my rating down to 4 or 4 1/2 stars when I thought about our food, but upon further reflection of the friendliness of the service, I'm staying with 5. We arrived at 5:30 meeting a friend that we hadn't seen in a long time so lots of talking was taking place instead of studying the menu. No other customers were there, but the hostess/waitress was still accommodating allowing us a taste of a wine unfamiliar to us and letting us talk and catch up on old times over our drinks. We shared a couple of appetizers; the Spanakopita was nicely prepared in puffy pastry while the Hummus and Onion Dip was delicious with fresh warmed pita. Our friend ordered a Pasta special of the evening with a Béchamel sauce. My wife had the Sword Fish Shish Kabob special of the evening, and I had the Pork Shish Kabob. The shish kabob dinners came with a Greek salad and roasted lemon potatoes. Even though the pasta did not come with salad and potatoes, when we inquired, our server was happy to provide them for our companion. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and I'll add that those lemon potatoes were extra good. By the time we left, 3 hours later, the restaurant was filled with people.
