I'm always on the lookout for a new little diner and we found this one in Watervliet (upstate NY). We've been to a couple nearby places that are more conspicuous but don't have the same charm as On the Hill. Great food and less costly than the others. Fantastic and quick service as well. My "Loaded Bowl" was quite tasty by itself, but a side of sausage gravy on top made it perfect! The Mrs. had the veggie bowl and it was satisfying but as usual it was too much for her to finish. No complaints on that...Coffee was good and my cup never made it to empty. Two minor quirks: My wife likes flavored creamer and they didn't have any. Also it's cash only -- they have an ATM in the front. I'm happy that my review will raise their star ratings. Can't wait to come back on our next visit! read more

Went here for the first time around 9:30 on a Friday! It's in a strip mall, so parking was not a problem. By 10:00 the placed was packed. You can tell that this is a local hot spot. The prices were very reasonable and the staff was very attentive. I had pancakes and sausage links. The pancakes were good but lacked flavor, the sausage links were some of the best I have ever had. It doesn't compare to Manorys in downtown Troy, which is usually our go to spot for breakfast. I've been coming to this place for years because food and service has always been top notch. I really enjoy the breakfast options the most. But there was a special on my last stop that was a mushroom burger and I didn't expect much but the burger was excellent, great tasting even with the canned mushrooms that I believe they use. I truly recommend coming here for just about anything. My go to is usually an omelet with no homefries but the spinach with feta, so good. Now after trying a burger I may get more of them and you definitely can't go wrong with a turkey reuben. I've had the breakfast bowls and a chicken dish too and just about anything you get you will enjoy but like me will find your favs. Something definitely for everyone is on their big menu. read more

I ordered a ham and American cheese omlet, with home fries and grits. The home fries were dry as a popcorn fart. The omlet had a good amount of ham and cheese but was amazingly dry. Upon walking in, you feel like you've been there before. There's a main man communicating with all around him to get food delivered (in a kind way). I ordered Greek omelette whole wheat toast. (I sat at the counter) I was greeted immediately, offered coffee right away and I asked for a water too. All came quickly. I was checked on too, to make sure meal was good. Food was delicious, atmosphere was like busy family making sure you were well taken care of...staff so polite not just to customers but each other, what a joyful experience!! This is the type of place where the locals go for a quick, cheap, standard breakfast. I don't want to call it a dive because it is well maintained but it's tucked away in an unassuming old dirt plaza between Latham and Watervliet that consists of a laundromat, used video game store, used tool thrift shop, possibly a church, and one of my favorite Chinese take-out spots. It's very easy to just drive by and miss. One advantage with the unpopular location though is plenty of parking. As I walked up to the screened door entrance I could tell it was gonna be a low-key hole in the wall. The inside was bigger than I expected and was about 3/4 full. We were told to seat ourselves at any open table with menus. The kitchen is an open concept with a flat top situated directly behind the counter. Everyone was working like a well oiled machine, quickly got food out, and turned tables. I ordered the Irish Benedict with homemade hash and got my homefries loaded with bacon, cheese, and sautéed onions. The front of the menu indicated that prices had increased by $1 per entree but even so I thought the prices were below average. When the food came out the Benedict was lacking a little in presentation and I noticed the corned beef looked very much like canned so I asked the waitress and she claimed it was correct but when I was not satisfied she asked the cook to take a look and when it was determined that the kitchen did make a mistake he immediately had them cook up a side order of the homemade stuff and within minutes I was in flavor town. You really can't compare canned hash to the quality of homemade. It was just how I like it. If I lived closer it would probably be in my regular rotation but since you aren't gonna find anything different on the menu from your average diner it is more likely to only be an occasional visit for me. read more

Great Breakfast, Lovely people! What lovely people work here! The place was hopping Sunday late morning, and we were taken care of by a number of people, all working together, with efficiency and welcoming demeanor. We were seated at a table by the window, and ordered breakfast and coffee for 3 of us. Portions were huge, food was great, and prices were amazingly affordable. Perhaps they have not yet heard of our inflation crisis! We all got variations of eggs with hash browns and toast. One in our party got eggs benedict and it was great, one got a huge omelet with potatoes and sausage cooked in, and I got the boring but always enjoyable eggs over hard. Two of us also got small side salads. I have to say, I enjoy the specialty salads with baby greens and goat cheese, but I grow tired of them. This place had what I really wanted: really crisp iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, pepper, onion and some spectacular bleu cheese dressing. Really fresh, so good. Also, in the back of the place, a counter with old timey stools that will place you back in time. Clean bathrooms also. We will certainly return. read more

Not sure how I missed reviewing this place as I come here every so often. Got the Chicken Parmigiana last night and thought it was pretty good. Garlic bread on the side is a nice touch. This place is close to me and part of my regular diner rotation. Friendly staff. Makes you feel comfortable. Offers to refill my ice tea. Checks on us to make sure all is well. Have to try the pizza at some time. Always seem to end up getting brunch food or dinner. Parking is really easy with ample free spots in the plaza lot. read more

We came here at 10:30am on a Saturday and was seated promptly. The wait staff was very friendly and provided their recommendations on the menu. We ordered a waffle, cinnamon swirl French toast, potato pancakes (which was one of many specials) and pancakes. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The waffle was fluffy and tasty. The cinnamon French toast was very good also. Although I do wish there was a hint more sweetness to it. We went here at the suggestion of someone who lives nearby, who dines here often, but whom I do not share many dining opinions with. That's being said, the first impression was quite surprising for a little strip mall. This is by far and away the cleanest diner type restaurant I've ever entered. That kitchen sparkles. It was a weekday morning and most tables were full. I was pretty shocked and this got me a little excited! Our waitress was great. She anticipated a lot of our toddlers needs which I definitely appreciated. I ordered the homemade corned beef hash. They have two on the menu- one homemade one not. I think the price difference was $0.50? This perplexed me. Anyways I got the hash with 2 poached eggs. What I envisioned was a little dreamy treat. What I got was a bit more dreary. The hash was way undercooked for my liking. Very wet and mushy. The eggs were fine. My toddler got the Mickey house pancakes with strawberries. I appreciated the little touch of pancakes with ears. I had to nearly sit on my hands to not immediately scoop off whatever the "strawberries" were. We also tried a biscuit which I'm hoping wasn't homemade because it was pretty rough. We decided on a Hilltop Cafe and Pizzeria. The staff are friendly, attentive, quick to refill your coffee and fast to deliver your meal. When it comes to diner food- these guys are pros - . I heard about these guys for some time -- they have a great reputation for being super consistent and so far, I agree. The locals love this place and the sign, says it all. The food is Damn Good and it always seems to hit the spot and it does it at a reasonable price. They nail breakfast and they have a decent lunch and dinner menu. Typical dinner menu - I wish they had a few surprises, but its nothing to complain about. Love this place! The atmosphere is so friendly and most of the staff are so jolly, even early in the morning. It's so conveniently located right next to the laundromat I use, so I always pop over for a coffee or some breakfast. Prices are pretty good too, it's always hustling and bustling! The Reuben is FANTASTIC and the bacon egg and cheese on a roll is pretty good too. The manager I believe he also cooks always comes around to check on everyone.
