House burger, mushroom burger, owl fries, potatoes
    Mia B.

A vegan staple! The two times I've been here it has been pretty tasty. The house burger has wonderful flavor, and the owl fries are a decent vegan take on animal fries. The mushroom burger was a bit dry and lacking on the mushrooms, and the roasted potato's could've used some more seasoning. Would recommend overall if you're looking for a solid vegan meal.

I've been coming to Green Owl for years and I find myself ordering it pretty much once a week. My favorites off the base menu are the Steak Bomb and Banh Mi. The fries are killer, but I love the kale crisps too. They also have rotating soups and a variety of desserts that are delicious. But my favorite thing is checking in every week to see what they've cooked up for the Sammy of the Week and Burger of the Week. Or any number of tasty weekend specials/pop ups. I don't think I've ever had a dud. There isn't a ton of seating and it can get pretty cramped with people waiting for take out orders. In the warmer months there's quite a bit more seating with the patio open. It's counter style and dine-in service is generally pretty speedy. My only qualm is that they're essentially a vegan restaurant--all desserts are vegan and all dishes come vegan by default--but they still offer dairy cheese and eggs(?) I would really love to see them fully commit to being a vegan restaurant. I love this place (they even have cute merch) and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates a hearty sandwich/burger and a menu that stays interesting.

I had my lunch here on a Sunday. The place was busy, but I still got a seat right away. jambalaya was my favorite item here. It was a sesonal specialty. It was nice and flavorful. Barbecue jackfruit berger was another special. It was a good item as well. Kids chicken nuggets was just ok.

Vegan and veggie lovers UNITE!!! This place is dedicated to having several options (including a rotating seasonal menu and specials) that will appease the gluten free/friendly, vegan, dairy-free, and vegetarian appetites. They have classic cocktails for $5 (and can get them to-go) plus they have signature cocktails for $10. Wide variety of food to meet the pickiest of eaters needs. We tried the house burger and chick'n sandwich. Both were stacked with fresh ingredients and generous portions! BONUS: No credit card fee!!! Bring whatever payment you'd like!

I love that there's vegan options, since that's the first thing I'm looking at while traveling. I ordered through the phone was told 30 minutes for the food which isn't too bad considering online it said about an hour wait. Once I showed up to pick it up they said a few more minutes. Almost 20 minutes pass by and 3 other people get their orders. I eventually got mine. I subtracted a star for that. As for the food, the banh mi was okay, I've had better and not as liquidly as this one. The "meat" is grilled tofu and I shouldn't have expected so much but it didn't have much flavor. Subtracted another star for that. The fries were pretty good. The vibes were very hipster and filled with plants, you order at the counter and seat yourself as well. Outdoor seating is nice. Not sure if I'll stop by again if I'm passing by.

    BB Bowl

I love this place! It's usually a reliable spot for delicious food and friendly staff. I tried the BB Bowl for the first time last week, and unfortunately, I wasn't a fan. It was lacking flavor compared to other dishes I've had at Green Owl. I'm excited to try something different during my next visit.

I got the sandwich and soup of the week, both were phenomenal and they came out quickly. This was a very good experience.

Ask the Community - The Green Owl Cafe

Is everything on the menu vegan?

It's either vegan or can be made vegan on request. They offer dairy cheese on some items and that can be substituted for a vegan cheese.

    Do they allow dine-in yet?

They currently have some outdoor seating (about 8 tables of 4 seats each) with umbrella coverage, but are not open for inside dining yet as of early June 2022. You can come in to order; they will bring your food out to your table outside; and they…

Are they dog friendly? Are well mannered and well behaved dogs allowed on the outdoor seating area of they are on leash?

With the outside patio dogs should be no problem. Especially on a leash.

Everything we tried was outstanding. The restaurant has two floors which may lead for a tad slower service on a busy night as people go up and down the stairs. I enjoy the throwback signs of restaurants of old. Plants and artwork broke up the space, feeling both open yet cozy. We started with a few apps-bison momo, samosa, and pakoda. The samosa had an incredibly flaky crust that was stellar. The momo was next level. The accompanying sauce brought a little heat but every bite left you wanting more. For our main course, we opted for the lamb kabobs as well as the biriyani. The lamb was executed perfectly-a great char with tender meat, it was accompanied by a nice rice pilaf. The dish was substantial as was the biriyani. Flavor packed, it hit all the notes. For those new to Madison or unfamiliar to the area, Ama is set back off the road with a very small/tight parking lot. We opted for street parking vs. trying to jenga ourselves out of there. A must visit.

Regrettably, something went wrong at my dinner at Graze. After the meal, I received an email asking for direct feedback with the management, which I shared. And I received a very well written apology with a sincere effort to make things right. That effort brought what would have been a 2* experience up to a 4* review. The most important tidbit I have to share for someone contemplating a dinner at Graze is to go hard on the vegetable focused starters. Wow! These were the stars of the show. Hands down. Full stop. Those were five star dishes all the way. Asparagus in season with bread crumbs. Stunning! Young tender beets paired with strawberries? Inspired! While the burger was tempting, I had a burger for lunch and I couldn't bring myself to do a two burger day. I went for the Korean Fried Chicken app as my main, paired with those veggies. It was plenty of food, and I had high hopes for the chicken given the chef's background. But some of the meat was stringy and overcooked. The sauce was zesty with good heat. Still, it fell short of the standard. Warm cookies and milk are never bad. Classics are classics for a reason. But given some of the culinary creativity that exists in the kitchen, it's a bit uninspired. That said, one scoop of seasonal pear sorbet was fantastic! Great flavor and texture. While the server did not know what type of pear was used, I'd put my money on Boscs. The place is popular. Make reservations early. Madison turns out not to be such a late night town, so plan accordingly. While I may not have been tempted to return originally, after the care and attention I received from management, I would indeed come back. I'm sure there is a 5* experience to be had at Graze, but sometimes it takes a second visit to get there.
