The Green project is a must for any DIY, creative maker, home improvement peoples or vintage/historic home owner. This multiroom warehouse offers a plethora of bits and bobs from donated and gathered home improvement wares. One time I picked up an old door, an old timey facet head and some hinges. From these super economical finds, I was able to fabricate a garden gate, using the faucet as a creative spin on a traditional doorknob or latch. I love it. Recently, I eye spied, a partially used tub of tile adhesive and several random tiles. They'd be the perfect solution with someone with a tiny bathroom or counter top that needed sprucing up. You can find doors, windows, screen, light fixtures, tiles, wood, paint, and a whole host of parts that you can't pick up at any big box store. On a Saturday of February 28, I visited The Green Project, a salvage store facility in New Orleans where all items are donated. I've been a customer for over 5-years and have made many donations as well as many purchases. I intended to buy a pallet of flooring; I gave my credit card to the cashier to pay for the flooring; I made a hasty decision because I was leaving town in a few days, then I changed my mind. On Sunday, the following day the stored was closed, I made contact with one of the stores workers by the name of Jerome. I told him I decided not to buy the flooring and requested my credit card be credited back to me for the $1980. On Monday I called and asked if I needed to bring my card to the store for the 1980 refund. I spoke to the Manager by the name of Jasmine; she informed me that they don't give refunds. Of course, I thought that was ridicules because I hadn't even removed anything from the store and proceeded to call the credit card company and file a claim for the $1980 to be refunded. Credit One gave me a temporary refund, I left town a few days later, when I returned, I still didn't think there was a problem until May 6, 2026, the day my bank reversed the credit claim, and I owed my creditor $1980. Since then, I've made attempt after another trying to recover those funds and I have not been successful. At this time my credit account is past due, and I refuse to pay for something I did not receive. The Green project sold the flooring to someone else. The manager Jasmine told my creditor that I had picked up the flooring and also told them there was a large, posted sign stating, "no refund policy", but this is not true, there was no sign at all posted. The Green Project knows very well I did not pick up the flooring, and they should've simply refunded my card. Basically, this is theft. read more

This is a very important spot to know about if you own a historic home in the New Orleans area. There is a huge inventory of historic buildings in the New Orleans area which suffer due to the challenging environment of the region along with time that results in ongoing damage to different parts of these old buildings and it is hard to find replacement parts. The Green Project is essentially a graveyard of houses that have been sadly torn down and the remaining good parts salvaged which allows current homes to be repaired with the remains of destroyed ones. The biggest negative here is the sticker shock prices of many of the items as you are no longer getting good deals on many of the items which might have been much more possible right after Hurricane Katrina. read more

I've been wanting to go to this location for at least 6 to 8 months, but due to auto immune issues and COVID, I waited. But as I walked in yesterday, I laughingly told the Customer Service rep that it was my first time, and she took the time (rare!) to explain the layout of the store & asked what I was hoping to find. As I walked around, you'll see the treasures both architecture, creative and practical or for the DYI self-contractor because of a storm...this is your place!! There's even a workroom available!! They have an endless supply of used doors, kitchen cabinets, windows, shutters, lights, building supplies, paint, tiles, wood, bricks - you name it. I so wish I had a creative eye for restoring/ building things. Maybe it could be my 2019 resolution:) I do know several people who bought doors and windows there, and they look amazing. I ended up buying just LED lights, that were insanely cheap- 50 cents a piece. I will definitely be back as their supply is constantly changing, and I definitely can get bricks and wood for my garden. They accept credit cards, but it has to be more than $5. I was able to donate two ceiling fixtures that I had replaced in my home. I did not think to ask for a donation receipt and I wish that they had thought to offer one. We came here looking for some cool finds. Not as many options as we had hoped, but luckily we found a lil door with the Orange paint marking it FREE. Not sure how often they do that with items, but we left with our FREE door and we'll be using it for a soon to be finished tree house. Yay! Not as many lights and fans, but certainly worth a look if you're in need of something unique for your home remodel project. Still a great value and a GREAT place to donate used or unnecessary building supplies. Since my last review, I've dropped off paint, paint and more paint, light fixtures, ceiling fans, a bathtub, sinks, the entire contents of my parents' condemned garage. The staff has always been great, helping us unload and asking questions about our donations. They were very impressed with my Dad's castoff collection of homemade tool boxes. When recycling options were few and far between in the city, the Green Project picked up the slack and served as a makeshift recycling center. Yes, they have an excellent assortment of bath tubs, sinks, cabinets, hardware, doors, windows, and wrought iron, but they also host amazing environmentally-themed workshops and community events. The Green Project is as good as it gets for low cost hardware and building supply stores. They are constantly changing merchandise due to the in store donation center. This is very convenient as it makes it a sort of one stop shop. They have a ton of doors, window sills, glass, marble/granite slabs, lighting and PAINT! They have an in house paint recycling program that enables them to sell tons of paint at a really low cost. They don't have any where as near as many options as Home Depot but the cost is great if you are on a budget. You'd be very surprised with how high the quality of the paint it. read more

Aside from the fact that I was disappointed to find out that the Green Project is NOT a medical marijuana dispensary (we're not in Denver anymore, Toto), I was really impressed with this place. For one, their mission is really cool. The Green Project operates a building supply store consisting of recycled materials. In addition to the retail space, they also (from the website) "operate a warehouse, lumberyard, paint recycling center, Recycle for the Arts, electronic waste recycling drop-offs, and environmental education programing." Yeah, this is all fine and good. But to invoke Janet Jackson, what has Green Project done for me lately (oooh oooh oooh yeah)? Well, they helped me alleviate some storage problems in my new place for ridiculously cheap. Yes, it's true that you might have a hard time finding furniture here, but it is possible. And here's how: They post furniture on Craigslist. So do a search for Green Project, grab the RSS feed, and get constant updates on their furniture inventory. The Green Project also regularly updates their Twitter account (@thegreenproject) with info on sales, free shit and such. Have you seen art around town using old window sashes? Yeah, if you have a little artistic flair, you can do that shit yourself. They have a huge selection of window sashes, which I think are like $5 a pop. One thing that really impressed me was how organized everything was. If you ever have a moment and want to help out, this is definitely an appreciative organization who can definitely always use a little help. Definitely check them out. This store is great for paints! They recycle paint people. You can bring in old paint and get recycled paint and make magic happen in your house. You really can't get any better than that. There is so much cool shit here. There are piles and piles of old bricks, badass decorative wrought iron pieces, lumber in every dimension, buckets of nails, a literal yard full of sinks and tubs. They sell all kinds of used hardware, including hundred year old locks and crystal door knobs. Speaking of doors, they have doors in all sizes and usually some furniture and fancy light fixtures too. I bought a bunch of bricks with more character than I could find at other building supply places for about a quarter of the price. I bought wrought iron pieces and turned them in to pot racks and tables. I always buy some wood when I go just for scraps and small projects. Pretty much all of my nails and screws used. My wife wants to buy a claw foot tub and convert it to a chaise lounge, and if we do that, I'm almost positive the tub will come from here. I recommend coming here to get ideas for future projects, or coming here once you know what you want to do to see if you can save some money and the environment. This non-profit does great work, providing low-cost building materials and keeping these supplies out of the landfill. Because it's all salvaged materials, you have to approach it the way you would a thrift store. If you go in looking for something too specific, you may not find it. But if you go and browse periodically and keep an open mind, you can come back with some treasures. The Green Project is a great resource for artists, for all of the wood, paint and building materials they recycle as well as the Recycle for the Arts shop that is there. You can find all sorts of low cost art supplies, costumes, fabric trims, paints, picture trim and more. Low cost supplies for materials for projects around your house. I gave 4 of 5 only because the cashier seemed more interested in her IM Chat then helping us. The layout is pretty good, easy to find stuff and most of the people working there are really nice. Every week it changes, so if your looking for unique stuff you might want to go every weekend to see whats new. I bought wood and paint, the wood worked out perfect, the paint was mislabeled so we couldn't use it. It was pretty cool seeing the train go by while looking around. What an amazing concept in New Orleans! I love this place! I have only used Sherwin Williams and DeVoe paint so I was a bit reluctant to purchase paint for my home project at The Green Project. Seriously, how can you pass up $10 a gallon for paint though?? I must say, this was the best quality paint I have EVER used! It was super thick, only needing one coat and completely filled to the top (unlike storebrand paint!) I am thrilled to have this resource in our city and can not recommend it enough! read more

In from out of town doing an artist residency for the month. I believe in supporting anything locally owned or that has (in this case - had) good community intentions and support. I had heard rumors before I went they were cheap with slim pickings and the customer service had done a 180. Not to go.... Wanting to give the benefit if the doubt, I went anyway. Purchased some items. Talked to the somewhat rude manager about offering a discount if I were to purchase a good amount of material. Which he declined. Then after some discussion he kindly gave me $20 off my purchase which I appreciated. We agreed to hold my wood purchase inside the main building since I knew it would rain this weekend, only to show up with half of my purchase taken outside to sit in the rain. Completely baffled after I confirmed the date of pick up (which was two days later). I just could not understand at all! ReallyAfter my purchase, the community came out of the woodwork telling me they are not the place of old and the locals prefer not to support this place. - I hear Rickers or Strippies (sp?) is a better place to support Not good customer service and items of not very good quality. But good enough if your creative. The manager finally refunded part of my purchase (instead of mandatory store credit). Which again, I appreciated. However, the kicker is, an employee (noticeable) by her (?) reggae beanie hat decided to engage with snarky comments toward me and belittling me. I told her I tried to support a local business only to get condescending remarks like "oh, thank you for help save us" and so on. Telling me since I was from out of town, it was a wonder why I was complaining. Problem is. I was actually with an ex-employee and permanent resident who commented he was offended by her (?) comments and behavior. If you're looking for extremely low cost paint, and aren't too particular about the exact color, then go to The Green Project! I have bought small cans of paint for less than a dollar for little art projects and also bought a full gallon of "new" recycled paint for my living room for about $8 (I think that's how much it was, might have been less). It looks great! Overall I'd say this is a place you should stop at to see if they have what you need before going anywhere else. Stock changes frequently so if you see something you like you'd better pick it up or it will probably be gone next time you stop in. In general they have a good selection of used/recycled wood, bricks, doors, windows and paint. They also have some cabinets, mixed hardware and plumbing items. The staff is great. The concept is of course wonderful. I don't always find what I need and yeah, the prices can be high but occasionally you find a really great deal and it makes it all better. We've been renovating a +150 year old camelback double for the last 2 years and salvage is the only way to go. The condition of a lot of their stuff isn't great. It's old, what do you expect?? But we have found some gems, especially in the door department. I have a strict rule that we replace all windows and doors with historically accurate ones and the GP as helped me to stick to that. I love this place. I use it for my home and business. The staff is super friendly, the prices are unbeatable, and the selection is always eclectic and entertaining. I run a gallery & studio and the GP is my go-to source for all my do-hicky needs. I have framed entire gallery shows from GP stuff and all my studio tables & shelves have been built/acquired there. When this store first opened it was great. materials which would a lower income neighborhood improve the condition of their homes. Paint was $3.00 a gallon and now it is $10.00. How can the price of donated paint go up. The prices are high considering the condition of most items. Once the young whitd kids and the nthe decorators showed up ,it went to HELL IN A BASKET!!!!!!!!
