It has never delivered great food at a great price. So nothings changed after 18 years. I'm passing.

I was hoping this spot would be a gem in the neighborhood but no such luck. We dined here the other night with a party of five. Frankly, It appeared the restaurant was trying to operate with a skeleton crew. One waitress, with occasional help from one manager, was trying to accommodate the entire restaurant. The obvious result was extremely slow service, a flustered server, clientele looking around constantly for a drink order/ refill, appetizers, dinner, their check...etc. Our food was spotty. First, the calamari appetizer was pretty great (thus the 2 star rating) with a wonderful dipping sauce. I took us several tries to order a bottle of wine as the restaurant was out of two different bottles that we tried to order. Not a huge deal. Our salads ranged from lackluster (house salad) to pathetic (Caesar) and dinner was less than wonderful. My husband's walleye looked like it was going to be pretty tasty but after one taste and he said it was bland, overcooked and disappointing. My lamb ragu was equally disappointing with overcooked fettuccine and a dry, pithy and underwhelming ragu. The bison burger was fine, cooked pretty close to ordered and nicely presented. The fish & chips were blah as was the Alfredo. The check was over $200 dollars. In the end, I would say The Grill at the Pines would be fine for cocktails and appetizers or possibly lunch, if you can afford the wait. Otherwise, I would say the inadequate wait staff resulting in slow and harried service is unacceptable, the menu is overpriced for the quality delivered and the whole dinner experience leaves you feeling sorry for the restaurant, sorry for the friendly manager, but mostly sorry that you just spent that much time and money on a less than great dinner out. ***Note: the location is attractive and the patio really quite inviting. I stood at the front of the nearly empty restaurant, waiting for a host/hostess. Someone finally asked if I'd been helped, I said no, and he told me to hang on. It went downhill from there. I sat on the patio (which is absolutely adorable, a place I'd love to take out-of-town guests) and my husband joined me. Glad he was late because the service was SLOW. No water refills at all. My grilled chicken salad was dry and basic. Husband ordered a burger that was okay. SOOO too bad b/c, while the decor in the place is dated, I love the location and would love to find a reasonably priced local place to eat. But the food isn't good and the service stinks. My wife and I used to stop in to grab a quick glass or two of wine 2-3 times a week. Occasionally we'd grab dinner as well. Let me get this part out of the way- the food is ok, nothing to rave about, but not bad, and the decor is generic Holiday Inn. At least the bartenders are cool. But... they recently changed their wine list from "not a bad selection" to "completely generic and not that good". As this was our primary motivation for stopping in my wife asked to speak to the manager (tall dude with a goatee) to provide some feedback. After offering some constructive comments about her disappointment with the recent changes, I honestly couldn't believe his response... He started by referring to my wife as "sweetie" (in a completely condescending tone) and continued to explain the exorbitant prices for crap wine as "restaurant mark-up". From there he told her the wine change was due to "people with lots of money living around here, but being to cheap to spend it". Normally, I would have reached across the bar and kicked the crap out of him for being condescending, insulting and, quite frankly, an ass, but I was honestly enjoying the awkwardness of his stupidity. We'll never go back again. Subsequent to this, in talking with some neighbors who have also had bad experiences, the rumor is they are in financial trouble and about to go under (makes perfect sense as they are charging $8/glass for a $6 bottle of wine). I ordered the fried poached egg with green chili and my wife ordered the garden Benedict. The waitress highly recommended the fried poached egg. It was very spicy and the poached egg was a little hard as was the poached egg on the garden Benedict. Service was good as they are trying to build the business after the prior one failed at this location. Supposedly, they now have a chef (can you imagine a restaurant without one). Still have serious reservations (no pun intended) as to whether this new management will make it either. read more

My husband and I have been to Grill at the Pines on two separate occasions. We have not been disappointed. The new manager, Kyle, stopped by our table personally to ask how we were doing. We did get a chance to see the new menu and were very impressed. Our food arrived promptly and we knew we had made good choices. Grill at the Pines will definitely be on our list of favorite restaurants. I hope that others will give it a try. You won't be diappointed. read more

Expensive food not worth the money. Average pre prepared fare that took 40 minutes to get. Fail.

We definitely liked the food better than the old Rodney's (especially the bar menu) but we are very disappointed that they couldn't keep the old spaghetti which we loved. Also, since there isn't a separate kids menu, it doesn't seem as family friendly. However, our waiter immediately produced some paper and pens for the kids which was very much appreciated. That being said, we are still in search of a local go-to restaurant. read more

My wife and I purchased a Groupon for this restaurant to use for a nice date night. Before heading out for our dinner, we read some of the less-than-stellar reviews about this place, so we didn't expect much from the start. We debated whether or not the 45 minute drive to the restaurant would even be worth it, but we figured since we already had the Groupon, might as well give it a shot. Upon calling for a reservation, the hostess informed us, "Oh you won't need a reservation at all for tonight...we don't expect to be very busy." Seeing that this is a Saturday night....over Memorial Day weekend...that didn't sound like a very good sign. When we arrived at the restaurant, only one other table in the whole place was filled. Again, not a very good sign. The hostess was nowhere to be seen, but when she did show up she mumbled something about finding a clean table for us (like there weren't enough empty ones around??) then proceeded to seat us at the only crumb-covered, filthy table she could find. The booth appeared to fit about eight people (so why seat a party of two there?), and I'm not sure the restaurant staff has ever swept out the spilled contents from the pitch dark underside of the table. When we first slid into our seats, we had to work hard to find a place to put our feet between the discarded napkins and food remains. I happened to skim my foot over something that felt like a weeks-old dinner roll, but found out later that it was one of a pair of discarded shoes left there by someone named Claire D. (according to the Sharpie mark on the sole). I shudder to think how long they had been there before I stumbled upon them. The stained paper menus we were handed didn't help any of the entrees appear appetizing, so we ordered something safe - a buffalo burger and a BLAT (bacon lettuce avocado tomato). They were out of avocado, so they proceeded to put guacamole on as a replacement. Not quite the same, but nice try. There was only one small slice of tomato on the sandwich.....but I have to admit the bacon was cooked to perfection. The buffalo burger was next to raw and the so-called "steak fries" were nothing but average, thin, soggy fries topped with a fine layer of grease. Oh, we did order an appetizer of Bacon Broccoli Macaroni, and that was fantastic! So thumbs up on the macaroni and bacon! The whole dining experience was amusingly awkward and hilariously unprofessional. The waitress hardly stopped by our table, and when she did it was short and rude. I kept seeing the hostess wandering aimlessly around the restaurant, looking at the ceiling like she was expecting a downpour at any second, and the couple at the table next to us had a 20-minute-long, extremely loud discussion about how both of their feet couldn't actually fit underneath the table at the same time. We actually ended up enjoying our evening because we spent the whole time making observations together about what we could share with others in our review. They say laughter is great for relationships...we must have a stronger relationship than ever before after our experience tonight. If you need a pick-up in your marriage, by all means...this place with bond you like none other. If you're looking for a quality evening out, steer clear. For those of you who purchased the Groupon...please know that if you have to drive more than, like, 10 minutes to get there...it's not going to be worth it. Just eat the 10 dollars you spent on the Groupon and instead spend the evening fasting and praying that nobody else opens a restaurant as poor-quality as this one again. read more

We tried The Grill at the Pines because I had purchased a Denver Post Deal. We ate outside and it was a nice evening. Our service was good. Unfortunately the food was nothing to write home about. The prices are too high for the quality/quantity that you get. The inside decor also looks pretty outdated. It could be a great place if it wanted to. It's in a great area, but we had never heard of it or the location. read more

Wow, where to begin. Fairly new to the Castle Rock area, my wife and I decided to try the restaurant out. We had been to the Mexican place across the street and thought it was pretty good. After walking in, seeing hardly anyone and waiting by the "please wait to be seated" without anyone coming for about 5 minutes, we should have taken the queue. But, a nice enough waiter came and seated us. They had nothing on tap as "their taps blew" and had a modest selection of beers, so, I ordered a bottled beer and my wife ordered a red wine. This is where the fun starts. After waiting about 10 minutes, we saw the waiter and reminded him that we had ordered drinks. He said he'd be right back. About 15 minutes later he was back with the drinks and to take our order. We told him we were thinking about leaving at this point, but, he profusely apologized for the wait and said they were short staffed but he'd get our order in "right away". My wife was hungry by this point so we asked if they had bread. He said they usually charge for it, but, because it's taken him so long to get our drinks, we'd get "bread for free" - yippee! The bread came out about 5 minutes later. It was basically a toasted hamburger bun with lots of butter and a light sprinkling of garlic powder. How delightful. When our food came, it was nothing short of shocking. My wife ordered the Hawaiian shrimp or whatever. Had to use a knife to saw through the things. They were not only overcooked. They were cooked solid. The rice and veggies had absolutely nothing on them. No sauces, butter, anything. Overcooked veggies, plain rice and some rock hard shrimp. I ordered a flatiron steak. I ordered potatoes au gratin. The potatoes were partially raw and the steak, while a decent cut and cooked OK, had zero taste to it. It had overcooked mushrooms and burnt onions topping it which helped a bit. The waiter came back to ask us how we were doing which was nice after he was talking to the table next to us for 40 minutes before checking. We told him the truth. We told him the meal was nothing less than "shocking" and that they really need to close their restaurant, the sooner the better. Anyhow, hope this helps someone avoid this place like the plague. read more

I was in this past Friday night and sat at the bar, it was fairly busy and the vibe was good. Tommy was our bartender and he made our experience at Grill at the Pines very pleasurable. He reccommended the special that night, but since I am not a seafood eater he suggested the Florentine salad small and the chicken sandwhich. It was wonderful and the presentation of the food was very nice. Our drinks stayed full all night and my martinis were perfect. We will be back for sure to sit at the bar! read more

this restaurant changes hands recently. As Rodney's it was just OK as the Grille, based on my visit, it has not improved. I came in on a snowy evening. The place was very empty. I sat at the bar and ordered a simple hamburger. it took almost 30 minutes to arrive. I will try one more time. Every place deserves a second chance. read more

This used to be a wonderful Rodney's restaurant, and the food and service were always consistently good. It has now been taken over by a new owner/cook (who calls himself a chef), and the place has gone down the tubes. The food is awful, as is the service, and the prices are outrageous. Castle Rock, Parker and south Denver have many great restaurants--and this is definitely not one of them. read more

This is our first time here since dining at Rodney's, we were not impressed! Rodney's was great had a creative menu, fun specials and well stocked kitchen!! so we now tried the grill : ( what a disappointment. Keep in mind this is valentines day evening!! We were seated for our reservation for 730 pm. Our waitress said we have some discontinued items on the menu....we are out of the calamari appetizer, Kansas city steak, meatloaf, wall eye (fish dinner) and roasted chicken. Which only left choices of chicken pot pie, beef tenderloin (the most expensive item on the menu) , a salmon dish, oh and fried fish and chips, and this was at 730 pm on Valentines Day!!!! Who runs out of half there dinner menu after 5 as advertised on their menu on this day!!! Oh and the fish of the day was salmon, which was prepared differently from the salmon valentines day special. ( so if u dined at at this restaurant after 730 pm on v-day, you had a choice of salmon or, um salmon!!!! Who the heck has two fish specials of the same fish!!!!) Even if you did have a rush for early dinner, yes there were about 20 senior citizens enjoying their evening, rightly so, why on earth wouldn't you plan accordingly for the evening!!!!! There is no reason why you should run out of half your after 5 menu as u advertise if you planned accordingly. Since the only items left were salad, sandwiches, and a $28 steak, we left the restaurant without even ordering!!!! We looked for the matri'd to tell her our disapointment but there was no one at the hostess stand. If you want good food, not overpriced go to Taste of Mexico or Anthony's pizza, where we ended up. The grill is absolutely not worth it. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!! Bring back Rodney's!!!!! read more

We went to this restaurant for years when it was Rodneys and really enjoyed the atmosphere and food. When it was newly purchased and renamed we were terribly disappointed. Both the service and food were terrible. Recently, though we went back with a coupon and tried it again both last week and this week. It is hard to believe, but both the service and food were very good! We had at different times the turkey sandwich, shrimp plate, and French Dip sandwich. All very good. I would give it another chance. read more

I'd been to Rodney's (before it was Grill at the Pines) and wasn't impressed. Wanted to try Grill, but when we got there we discovered it's Rodney's again! So, I wanted flat iron steak and was told they were out of steak, all steak. Really??? I ordered the salmon and it was decent. Actually cooked perfectly and was a pretty good sized portion (took home half). I was told they were out of Au gratin, so ordered mashed. The mashed potatoes were boring. The grilled asparagus was decent. The calamari was almost undercooked, if there is such a thing, and not seasoned at all. In fact nothing seemed to be seasoned. At least it wasn't over seasoned and salty... No wine list, just house wines and the waiter didn't know the name. However, the chardonnay was good for the price. Anyway, I won't return. read more

My husband and I went to Grill at the Pines today for a quick lunch at a new place. We walked in and there were hardly any other people there (I believe only one other couple while we were being sat). After deciding to share a plate and have a couple bloody marys we began the wait for our food. ** The bloody marys were delish! Unfortunetly we waited for atleast 35 minutes for one plate of food....absoultely not acceptable! Before our food came our waiter (who was also the waiter for the other couple) went to check on them and I overheard the woman complain and their plates went back full to the kitchen and they left. We FINALLY recieved our food...not at all what I expected. We ordered the fried poached egg over potato cakes with ham and green chili because the server said it was the most popular. It looked like a big bowl of chili with 2 soggy "fried" eggs. Taste was ok....which is the 2 stars. Presenation was horrible, service and waiting was horrible, watching servers walk around talking about having "hangover sweats" not appealing to your customers. Obviously there is a HUGE lack of management at this place. I hope they get it together and can turn it around....but we will not be back. read more
