A coworker and I went to The Grill today. I was my first time dining there. I ordered the English Dogs and onion rings. My coworker got a hamburger. She said they have the best burgers around. My hot dogs were pretty good. I wasn't a big fan of the type of ranch they use. I'm a ranch dipper, lol. I dip my onion rings in it. But the chili they used was pretty tasty. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm on the West Side. Pop, onion rings, and two dogs was close to $15 (excluding tip). That was a little higher than what I expected, but prices are higher everywhere nowadays unfortunately. read more

I was in Charleston working and saw commercial about some guy name Sheff running for some office, BUT what I remember most was he got a Hot Dog at THE GRILL and I had to try it out. I got a hot dog with chili, slaw and onions light on the mustard and fries with a cup of ice for my drink in the car. No dining in at the time due to Covid 19, so I paid $7 with tip and taxes. The business is closed/out of business. We went by tonight, a Monday evening, based on recent reviews. Yelp verified they were open on Monday at 6:30 pm, but when we arrived the door was double locked, the lights were off and signs in the window said "coming soon". Don't know what's "coming soon" but it's not the business that Yelp indicates is serving food from that location. read more

I was in town visiting and was across the street getting my shoes repaired when I needed to kill some time and was hungry. The place is not very lavish but the food and the customer service is excellent. I had the special of the day which was catfish and fries and it was very good. I was the only person at the time so can't speak to eye candy. However, I would visit again. read more

First time going here and I fell in love. I don't think I will ever find a burger so juicy and flavorful like I have here, anywhere else! I got a regular cheese burger expecting it to be half dry because most burgers are like that. But no, not here, this was excellent. This burger was so juicy and cooked so well. I didn't even realize I took a bite of the burger. This is saying a lot because the burger only had cheese, tomato and light mayo. After eating the burger I almost got another one to go. The only thing that stopped me was my wallet lol if not for that. I saw another burger in my future. My friend who dined with me had hotdogs. Had dinner at the GRILL this evening with two of my best friends for a birthday celebration. We were very excited to try it. I must tell everyone that is was very disappointing. Two of us ordered filet tips,Brussels sprouts and macaroni and cheese. We also ordered appetizers. We ordered stuffed mushrooms, artichoke dip and some kind of potato appetizer. Service was just so so. Not good and not the worse that I have had. Food was absolutely a disappointment. Had to send it back due to being cold. I doubt that we would go back there due to the quality of food for the price. I don't know right off the bat if I have had that bad of food anywhere of the caliber that that restaurant was suppose to be. Would have to give it a 1 star. This is certainly a hidden gem in Charleston. This place offers great "home cooked" meals, with a wide selection. Each day there are specials and they are usually the best meals to order. Burgers and cornbread/beans are always good. Not the nicest interior (older decor and a little rundown) but the food is worth it! read more

The Grill is the perfect casual spot for your 9-5 lunch break. Great food for not that much money. The double chilly dogs were my go to with fries. Stopped for lunch passing through town. Couldnt have been more dissapointed! Floor was dirty and had food all over. Paint on table was half chipped off and not even a plastic ta le cloth. Ordered boneless chicken dinner, it was a chicken mcnugget on steroids. All pressed together with rock hard tatseless batter. Canned green beans and two rolls with a gigantic blob of some kind of gold oleo! Should have guessed when I arrived and used the bathroom. Terrible! If you're looking for some great local establishments you need to stop here. Ownership is very nice and accommodating. But the best thing is the food. My kids loved the hamburgers and told me they are the "best ever". No bites were left on their plate. I ordered the Reuben with white beans and cornbread. I'm giving this place 4 stars for one reason and one reason only, the dining environment is old and dingy looking (but clean). The restaurant is in an old building in one of the oldest districts in town, the menu is on a chalk board and if your sitting at the table beneath, you feel as though everyone is watching you eat. The best Vegetable Beef soup in the Kanawha Valley. Hot dogs are wicked on an English bun. Best sandwiches in town! The pulled pork BBQ sandwich is a gift from the gods. It an old joint so don't expect much in dining atmosphere, but don't let first impressions fool you, this is the best place in town for lunch. Most underrated restaurant in town. read more

I'm so very torn about this place. I'll start with the positives: the food is great, and is a great representation of what you come to love about southern cooking, and even a few surprises such as the oliviero cheeseburger. The wait staff is friendly, inviting and prompt. The ambiance reflects a great amount of pride in the local culture, featuring posters of famous mountaineer football players, including, randomly enough, pat white. Additionally, for those traveling through town, it's conveniently located right off the highway, which makes it ideal for a quick pit stop, which they certainly are able to deliver on. Despite all of this, I can't in good conscience say this place is between four and five stars. The biggest detractor is is that it feels dirty. I'm sure the service industry isn't exactly booming in charleston, but a restaurant should at least put a modicum of effort forward in making sure that their surfaces and decor are somewhat tidy. I was thinking initially about two stars for the grill, but this restaurant went a long way in changing my mind about West Virginia, which in my circle of friends (including someone attending med school at Marshall) is bad mouthed consistently. I certainly wouldn't be disappointed to return here, or charleston in general, should my travels take me back through WV. read more

Fantastic! I'm from Boston where places like this are on many corners-however, very few and far between here in Charleston. The food is excellent, just like having Nana cook for you; (and my Nana made the best). The folks working here are really friendly and welcoming. They have daily specials in addition to their 'whiteboard' menu; such as creamed chicken & fried green tomato BLTs. I highly suggest their cheeseburger & fries as well. The winter time is the best here for chili and the rest of the food is something you can make at home for half the price of what he ask.
