The Grill has been a bucket list spot for years... and it did not disappoint. Two of us dined late midweek, and it was crowded -- and a bit noisy/loud, my only negative about the experience. We started with cocktails and then had the crab cake and pasta à la presse as starters. The crabcake was unique and finished with a hash brown/fried potato topping. It was unique but I do prefer a good old fashioned jumbo lump crab cake. The pasta à la presse was amazing. From the presentation of the meats and other goodies about to the pressed, to the gorgeous press itself... and the pasta was perfectly cooked, carrying the wonderfully intense jus from the press. The bread service is amazing as well - three unique offerings, all done very well - a pretzel roll, Parker house, and a sourdough... plus the best herb butter to complement it. I came for the prime rib, my dining partner had the honey duckling. The prime rib did not disappoint - carved table side with hand shredded horseradish, along with a Dijon and horseradish cream. The toppers were the perfect jus for the meat and an incredible deviled rib bone - real bbq!! We finished with the lemon chiffon which you could not stop eating. Food is incredible in this restaurant! The absolute highlight is the Pasta a La Presse - and they know it. It starts all the way from the waiter's description of the dish to the preparation of the base for the sauce at the table and then the actual dish. While an appetizer this can absolutely be a wonderful entree. The Seagram Crab Cake was also wonderful. I do wish I had been hungrier to be able to try the steaks, but it wasn't meant to be this visit. The one item that was somewhat of a disappointment, taste wise, was the Baked Alaska dessert. Everything else had been so good and the waiter did such an amazing job at describing the dessert that the hype was too much. It was drenched in bourbon which killed every other flavor that we'd should have gotten from the dish. The decor is elegant and beautiful, although until full, the restaurant seems slightly bare as the decorations are mostly in the entry and bar area. The best thing of this restaurant is the service. The Grill is one of the best restaurants in New York. First off, the space is gorgeous. One of the most elegant dining rooms I've seen, with a beautiful bar. The service is the best of the best. Everything operates efficiently with ease. Nothing feels rushed. If it's in your wheelhouse, do the caviar service. It comes with fresh baby pancakes, hash browns, sour cream, and all the accouterments. It's special. Every dish on the menu is perfection. The pasta press is an absolute MUST. It's one of the best, most layered pasta dishes I've had in my life. Very special. The Dover sole is the best meuniere I've had. For a side, the gnocchi dumplings are incredible. Dessert is mandatory. They're known for their rotating crueler flavors and lemon chiffon cake. I love the baked Alaska. One of the best dining experiences of all time. Originally the building housed the Seagram's Corporation. What a gorgeous, historic space - high ceiling, yet quiet and elegant for our afternoon meal. Alex, the Henry served us and each lent something different and wonderful to our meal experience. Both were attentive, knowledgable and able to lift a story or two when engaged about the restaurant. I totally would recommend this location. The staff welcomed you with open arms and I felt very wanted. The price point for the meal I felt was appropriate. I had the honey mustard duck! I'm a sucker for duck so it was easy for me to make that decision. I had the crispy hash brown as an appetizer/side. I also tried the screwdriver as a drink, which had a nice twist on a classic drink. It is sweet so beware, but that was OK with me. I did like the staircase, entering the location and the nice clean tables and lines. I never felt that my money was wasted here. While the service intends to deliver a wonderful experience - it comes across as pretentious and falls short in a few areas. A truly gorgeous place to step back in time with glamour and class. My friend had just undergone a knee replacement, so while our hosts escorted her via elevator, I climbed the sweeping stairs up to the majestic dining room and bar. Definitely a special occasion destination -- it isn't cheap -- but the food, service, and ambience made it worthwhile. Erin absolutely nailed the wine pairings for the Dover sole and duck we shared. They basically take the duck and some other herbs and spices and 'smush it' with a vintage duck press and then use that broth for the pasta. Definitely worth a one time $41 order for the experience, history behind the dish, but it honestly wasn't very flavorful. We also got the Prime Rib which was supposedly spit roasted, but because it came with zero sides and was $98 for just the cut of meat.. I felt like you could get it anywhere else for better value with similar, if not same taste. We then got the Honey Mustard Duckling ($61) which was essentially a Chinese roasted duck with a nice glaze of honey 'sweet and sour like' sauce. Worth it if you've never had duck! The prime rib, alleged the star of the show, was sold out the day I went but everything else was still fantastic. The squab, ribeye, crab cake were all awesome. There is, however, one negative. This restaurant is expensive. Like, absurdly expensive, even by NYC steakhouse standards. I think I paid a hundred bucks for a plate of ham. Was it great ham? Of course! Was it hundred bucks good? We celebrated our first family reunion in New York here, and it was absolutely beautiful with such an upscale vibe! The food was fabulous -- we ordered salads, crab cakes, vegetables, and two prime ribs (perfect size for four). By default, all prime ribs are cooked to a perfect medium rare, and they even served ours halved -- just right for sharing! We started with cocktails and ended with wine and dessert cakes, which made the evening even more special. From the moment we entered to the time we left, the service and atmosphere felt like stepping into another world. Pricing is on the higher end -- easily $200+ per person -- but for the quality and experience, it feels well worth it. As for the dress code, it shouldn't be a problem -- just avoid shorts and athletic wear. Clean, upscale casual is perfectly fine, though you'll also see people dressed very elegantly. After a number of years dining at high end restaurants, we know that a beautiful decor and inflated prices does not always guarantee a great meal. We have great meals at the local diner and pizza joint all the time without emptying out our bank account! The service at the Grill during our recent visit was spotty at best- a lot of inattentive moments. The food was good but no better than other steak houses that are a fraction of the cost. We had to send back the sautéed spinach because it was exceptionally salty. It was replaced quickly with a corrected version but I always thought that the best kitchens are constantly tasting the food before it leaves the kitchen! The Grill is a beautiful restaurant with good intentions regarding service and food but they miss the mark on both in our opinions with the results not justifying the cost. Went with family for Friday night dinner to celebrate a birthday. Made reservation weeks in advance - hoping to have a table in the grand dining room for an enjoyable birthday celebration. We were seated at the worst table - the first table right in front of the stairs in the bar /lounge area. 1 star The Grill: Where Glamour Goes to Die I've been coming to The Grill for years. I've always admired the space--the architecture, the history, the romance of it all. It was once a jewel of New York dining. What I experienced last night was a total betrayal of that legacy. I brought a friend visiting from Paris, hoping to share a bit of New York's classic steakhouse magic. We were 15 minutes late due to a thunderstorm--understandable in any major city. Instead of grace, we were met with smugness. "Your table's been canceled," they said--then magically found one a minute later. The attitude? Suffocating. Right before being seated, we were informed we had 75 minutes to finish dinner. Yes, a literal time limit on vintage champagne and prime rib. Are we at JFK or a steakhouse? The staff didn't seem to care about providing an enjoyable or gracious experience--it was a ticking clock to flip the table and maximize the bill, all while making you feel like an uninvited guest at your own dinner. To make things worse, my guest has a disability--he's hard of hearing and deaf in one ear. Any time he asked for clarification or for someone to repeat themselves, they looked at him like he was an alien. The staff acted visibly annoyed, as though accommodating someone's basic needs was somehow beneath them. Is this really how we treat people now? With irritation and contempt for needing to hear clearly in a loud restaurant? Our other Parisian friend stopped by to say a quick hello and have a martini. We were at a large corner banquette with plenty of room, but were told she couldn't join us unless we moved to the bar--mid-dinner. So we were shuffled to a cocktail table the size of a Frisbee, surrounded by crowds and chaos. And then came the pièce de résistance: just as our prime rib arrived--our grand, dramatic steakhouse moment--a very large man standing double-parked at the bar literally imposed his entire backside over our tiny table, and ripped a fart directly into our faces. We were crop-dusted with our dinner. We asked them to cancel the mains. They brought them anyway--plus extra food we didn't order, as if force-feeding us would fix the experience. The staff were visibly miserable. The energy was oppressive. The vibe? Like stepping into a haunted version of mid-century glamour where the ghosts have all quit out of frustration. We spent over $1,000 on food for two and a martini for one, and left feeling disrespected, stressed, and honestly--scammed. If The Grill responds to this review, I fully expect the same cold, robotic, customer-service speak we received all night. A beautiful room doesn't make up for soulless hospitality. My buddy and I split a crab Louis salad. It blew me away. Ir was one of the best first courses that I have ever had. My buddy had the branzino with salsa verde. He loved it. I had the snapper with coleslaw and chow chow. Ir was really good. We had the lemon chiffon cake for dessert. My buddy loved it. I liked it but would have traded it for a slice of coconut cake. The prices are not for the faint of heart, especially the red meat. You can have a relatively inexpensive lunch if you opt for a cheeseburger or a club sandwich. Service throughout the evening was prompt and helpful. For dinner we ordered the caviar service, crudités, whole grilled young chicken and dover sole. The caviar service here is truly impressive and served with ALL the accoutrements. The dover sole was also very delicious and served table side which added a nice pizzaz. As for food, they provide bread - a wheat sliced bread, sourdough twists, and bread rolls - on the house. The bread rolls were incredible and we asked for more, which was also complimentary. For mains, we ordered the ribeye, black bass, chopped salad, and sautéed spinach on the side (not explicitly on the menu but they were happy to make it). The ribeye was super tender but a taddd salty. The black bass was paired with a minty sauce. The chopped salad featured a variety of different ingredients and textures. The Grill might be a faded glory. It's Christmas, maybe that's why it was so disorganized today but, terrible timing, because Christmas is when you want everything to feel special, and at The Grill you are paying a premium for service and ambiance, on top of food. I've been many times over the years, when it was the Four Seasons and after it re-opened as The Grill in 2017. Sometimes for business meetings, sometimes for personal celebrations. Today is Christmas 2025 and my father-in-law booked The Grill for a festive holiday meal for five. He made these plans in October, as a thoughtful antidote to the passing of his brother-in-law earlier this fall. He's elegant, reserved, and understated yet he was visibly embarrassed by our meal today. The dramatic room with the crystal chandelier (that is frequently photographed and the room I've always been in) is much nicer than the adjacent room we were in with an incongruous stagnant water feature. There were live musicians playing piano and singing Christmas songs on an upper bar; they were over-amplified below by oddly placed speakers creating the effect of constructive interference which made the atmosphere cacophonous and conversation a concerted effort. The service was awkward, third tier, but it felt like the inefficiency came from higher up the food chain. I felt empathy for the servers who were probably getting yelled at in the kitchen and then having to deliver food hours after it was ordered (and meanwhile they were working on Xmas, not celebrating with their families). I also felt empathy for the patrons who were paying a lot for a special meal. Everything was off. There were dozens of staff marching around - endless parades. There was an intense red-faced bald sergeant who looked like he might be on the hunt for Jason Bourne. The food took an hour+ between courses and it was a prix fixe menu which made the delays harder to explain. It felt like a wedding - fish or steak? We all ordered steak but hours later they started to put plates of the fish in front of us, choreographed like a dance; taken away just as quickly when we told them we were steak. It took another 30 minutes and a mention to the Sargent by my husband that we'd been waiting for hours. Then the table was like a first draft essay: redundant, disorganized, haphazard, rushed, chaotic. The sides were served family style. For five of us, they brought out two bowls of the five sides - ten bowls. In person, they apologized to my in-laws for the experience but didn't follow through. A female fixer graciously said the drinks would be comped but they were not. It was the principle not the savings, as three of us had Diet Coke or water. My in-laws noticed when the bill came but were fatigued and too dignified to wait for it to be resolved. The other kind gesture intended to compensate for the mediocrity fell flat; they treated us to a bowl of ice cream with olive oil, salt and white savory truffles to share in addition to the dessert course of cookies and Yule log. We each tasted it, but cringed when the flavors melted together. A very particular flavor profile that might be best experienced with cannabis. I typically enjoy sweet savory culinary experiments without THC, but this was an odd discordant choice on a cold winter night. Which brings me to a final ambiance issue. The room was cold. There was cold air - like air conditioned air - blowing down on us. We sat, hugging ourselves in warm sweaters, to generate body heat. It was obviously hilariously disappointing.
