The Grill is one of my favorite places in San Angelo. The food is fresh daily, the kitchen is incorporated into the dining area, it has a central bar, and modern art and feel. There is a patio with heaters and misters and shields, which is very convenient. The thing I love most about The Grill, is that as a modern American restaurant, the menu is changing constantly. I believe that it adapts to the seasons, and even adapts to the feedback from the guests. There are nightly specials featuring seasonal items such as lamb and trout; and even the wine-list and martini line-up changes, though not as frequently. A recent change to The Grill that is worth noting is that they now serve BRUNCH on Saturday and Sunday. Along with brunch is an amazing BOTTOMLESS MIMOSA that is made in-house and fresh! I cannot begin to tell you how good this is. I do find there is an issue with consistency. Things often have a different style/texture/flavour/intensity to them with each visit. Personally I think that makes each time an adventure, but I can definitely understand how this changes the guests' opinion. After some thought, I think it would be fair to point out that as an independent bistro, there is always some push-and-pull with ingredients and availability, and even variance in the recipe. If you aren't from San Angelo, and you're sick of the "feel" of the place, then the Grill is the place to go to get away from it all. Once you step inside, it's as though you're in a different city altogether, and I think that's definitely worth something. read more

The service was exceptional! The jalapeño margarita-tini was delicious! The steak skewer was so-so, which is why I gave four stars instead of five. The steak was tough, but it had pretty good flavor, I just felt like I had to chew it forever. But they had many other items available and I would gladly give them another chance. I felt it was a little pricey, $11 for a burger, but the place was packed, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food. And that jalapeño margarita-tini... Wow!! But the service was over the top. This place is a slice of heaven. If you are looking for fresh delicious food, this is the place to go to. My waiter was probably one of the best servers I have ever had. She was super sweet and friendly. She always made sure my cup was full! I started with pork nachos as my appetizer! Oh my goodness talk about good! Crispy chips, beans, pork (which is slow cooked for 8 hours), diced tomato and cheese! I must say the pork was so delightful! So soft and great flavor!! For my course meal I was recommended salmon with a full lime, mashed potatoes and spaghetti squash. It was a FANTASTIC dish and also filled me up! In the time the Grill has been open, I'm giving it the credit it is due. The salads are great (though I do think the crabcake salad is overpriced...love the other salads though!). Good burgers, I love the fish tacos. The black beans are fantastic. Still not a fan of the "queso," but the other appetizers are tasty. It may be a case of the restaurant finally hitting its stride...still don't think the enchiladas are all that great (the enchilada sauce is a bit bland), but there are plenty of other quality dishes. Disclaimer, I'm not a local. But I'm visit San Angelo monthly for work. The Grill is the closest nicer restaurant near the hotel my team and I stay at, so we go every couple visits. I've been invited there by local clients, and even taken my Dad there when he tagged along with me on a work trip. I'm so surprised at some of the reviews, as I think this place is consistently very, very good. Drinks, appetizers, entrees, table service, bar service, hostess....all of it. Reliably excellent every time. The atmosphere is lovely, tables are well laid out, and the place is always nearly full. This a favorite of mine...they call it the Grill become you can watch them cook everything right from your table. Ain't no spitting on your food at this joint. Wait staff is great, quite a few long terms which is usually indicative of good management. Queso americano BTW is pimento and cheese...it's a bit weird with quac and chips. I have almost always had an enjoyable experience at The Grill. For the most part, the food has been great. I would recommend the burgers, pastrami sandwich, steakadilla and the fish and pork tacos. Also, you can't go wrong with the fries! The chips with guacamole and queso is delicious for an appetizer. The "queso" is more of a pimento cheese, but the flavors are wonderful and I honestly prefer it over a regular queso. The rotisserie chicken was OK, but not terrible. As for a drink, the jalapeno martini is excellent. For the most part the service has been good, but I have had a couple sub par experiences. I think the setup of the restaurant is great. The unique decor is great. Also, prices are very reasonable. The only negative is that because it is a rather small place, there is many times a small wait for a table. My friend asked for vegetarian options (of which there are literally none) and they were kind enough to make something for him off menu. Outdoor seating was a plus. Stopped in for Sunday brunch. They have a simple six item menu for brunch. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice. The patio looks great and would be comfy during Coker temps. The bar was uncomfortable to sit at due to the lack of a foot rail. I'm 6'-4" and my feet don't touch the floor but they're too long to rest on the rung of the bar stool. After a while my legs were starting to cramp. I order the steal ranchero and it was delicious. The steam was cooked perfectly, the potatoes were delicious. The ranchero sauce was the best I've ever had. It was sweet and smoky. My only complaint with the food would be the lack of a toast to soak up the egg yolk and that delicious ranchero sauce. I would have wiped my plate clean otherwise. The brunch menu includes some cocktails so I tried to order one. I was informed that they didn't serve them until noon. Unfortunately I would be done by then. I understand Texas state law is one drink per entree before noon but The Grill takes it a step further and doesn't serve at all. However, it's still on the menu. I understand wanting to CYA but you can be smarter about it than going to the nuclear option. Say start at 11:30? Or limit the ability for a server to order drinks in the computer? Or just don't put it on your brunch menu. There are so many smarter options that don't frustrate your customers. If it weren't for the excellent food this review would have been a 3 star. read more

My wife and I came here on our first night after moving from the bay area in California. I had the steak and enchilada, and my wife had the pork tacos - both dishes were excellent. California has a good amount of commercialized Tex-Mex places, but this restaurant was classy and had great attentive service to match the great food. The bartender was very skilled (excellent Mojitos) and friendly when we moved seats to watch the football game. We stayed in San Angelo for another 8 months or so before moving on (wife's in the military), and we have come to the grill for lunch, brunch, dinner and even just for drinks and appetizers. There are only a handful (or a couple fingers worth) of places in San Angelo that can grab a five star from me and this is definitely one of them. Check it out. read more

Really, really good!! I went in & wasn't sure what I wanted or what to expect. Got a seat at the bar within 10 minutes; and yes it was packed! I talked to the bartender who made a few recommendations based on what I was thinking. I ordered the fish tacos (I am on a quest for the best fish tacos in the US). I started out not really being in the mood for tacos, but I was totally surprised. It is kind of a build your own. The fish was -- PERFECTLY COOKED, and it was a seasoned filet, which you made into your own little taco. I would order them again in a heartbeat. I ordered a piece of key lime pie. Which was also really good. Crust had some pecans worked into it - I'm not a huge fan of pecans in crust, but the pie filling made up for it! The only things I would say to improve - 2 spaces were open at the bar but no chairs?? Prompt acknowledgement when you sit down. Not enough to be upset about, but it would make the experience that much better. Very long story short, I'll definitely go back! read more

We wanted to order drinks and the server did not know what were in any of the specials in fact he said well we aren't even serving those anymore (they were on the big chalkboard). Finally a great steak grilled to perfection in San Angelo, this is the new place to enjoy steaks and seafood. Forget that it's at the end of a strip mall, this place is the real deal. What this restaurant lacks in side dishes, it makes up with sheer perfection of meat and seafood - all properly prepared. The atmosphere is fun and the wait staff is friendly and attentive. You'll know that you're at the right place as soon as you smell the burning firewood from the parking lot - this is probably the best aroma to your senses besides brewing coffee, and they've got that too. I was in town for two weeks and the Grill was a place that a lot of friends recommended. The place was hopping so we sat outside on the patio (it wasn't as hot or humid on this day). The bar area was nice, as you can see the flames cooking up all the different meats. The ribs I ordered were almost perfect. The texture and tenderness was spot on...fell right off the bone as advertised. The char was a bit too salty for my overall taste, but let me tell you, I didn't leave any on my plate. The key lime pie was the best I had tried out of the 3 places I ordered it. Not overpowering on tart or sweetness. Just right. Overall, would definitely go back and try more of the menu items. I'm digging the fact they have some outdoor sitting (has it always been there?) and even though the parking lot always looks packed I've never had an issue getting seated quickly. The last meal I ate, pecan topped trout, was a bit of a departure and worth it. Perfectly flaky with a bit of crunch coming off the pecans. The white rice and nasty colored beans was a turn off. The location of the restaurant was weird also. I won't go back. Save yourself some money and disappointment, just go to Wendy's or Chick-fil-A. If I had a dollar for every time that the bartender asked me if I wanted a double shot in my cocktail. I found out quickly, they asked if you wanted double because they don't want you to see what you are paying for a "single". The drinks sent me back to my 21st birthday, the same flavor profile of a drink you'd find in a red solo cup. I'm sure the Applebee's caliber food calls for the extra cost. The food is mediocre, brunch isn't good, and in general this place would've closed in any city with a resemblance of food culture. Don't waste your time or money, just go to Applebee's. read more
