Kathy and I were traveling to the Triangle friends had told us about another place in town which we discovered to be closed. Rats! What to do? We both had to worked ourselves into being hungry and the thought of "...hurrying down to the local fast food place..." I opened up Yelp (what else) and discovered The Grist Mill. After perusing the menu and reviews, we were on our way with alacrity and arrived there soon after (a good thing as they were closing within 30 minutes for Memorial Day). We walked into a MAD HOUSE!!! A wonderfully laid out cafeteria-style place that is clean (defines what clean is!) and whose wait staff moves like they have skates on. No slouches here and no one sitting around waiting to clear tables either. They all work together in serving all the customers (no glass or cup shall long remain unfilled!) and they SMILE! Now the FOOD! Oh my oh my. One of the reviews mentioned their corned beef hash (a definite favorite of mine, IF done properly). We were told to have a seat and found an unclaimed table; within a few minutes we had coffee and had placed our order (scrambled eggs, bacon and yes, corned beef hash). The scrambled eggs were fluffy and really tasty; fours thick slabs of bacon and the hash!!! The cooks here did an incredible job; no mushy mess, but a delicious mixture of flavors that my tongue and stomach singing! Yeah, happy stomach and I will return.

First i wanna say Denise we love you and your service. The first day we came i must say i was overwhelmed by your attentiveness which led to our food coming out cold but..... you are apart of that special thing that comes with going to a local spot like Grist Mill. This spot is well known ritual to the many people of Clinton. Warms smiles from the staff to the fellow customers and simple breakfast choices that stick to the ribs. Food served nice and hot and my highlights were the grits, biscuits and sweet tea. Places like this are always a treat being my eating leans more towards non dairy and plant based. And i will say it was worth every bite. Thank you for your hospitality and when i came back the first person i'm looking for is Denise.

Chicken and pastry, turnip greens, and potato salad.

If you are in the area please stop and have lunch. It was absolutely wonderful. I had the chicken and pastry, turnip greens, and potato salad. I plan on going back tomorrow to see what they have and have lunch. It is the best home cooked meal I've had at a restaurant.

I love eating breakfast for supper there. They serve traditional Southern Country ham, grits and gravy that is like homemade.

Our experience was very disappointing from start to finish…read more When we arrived, there were only three occupied tables, so the restaurant wasn't busy. Despite that, it took over 20 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order. Once our drinks finally arrived, the waitress accidentally tipped a glass of ice water from her tray, spilling it all over the floor and down my leg. The salad bar was also disappointing. The lettuce was brown and sitting in excess water, with pieces floating in it. Many of the bar items were empty, leaving mostly juices available. For our meals, several issues continued. Another couple in our party ordered ribeyes, and they were extremely thin--more like sandwich steaks than ribeyes. One of the sweet potatoes tasted sour, and the mac and cheese for their young son took a very long time to come out. My husband ordered a hamburger cooked medium well, but it arrived very overcooked and dark. His serving of fries was noticeably smaller than another guest's side order of fries, and nearly half of his plate was empty. The biggest issue was my meal. Everyone else at the table was halfway finished eating before my food arrived. I ordered the marinated chicken with a loaded baked potato. The chicken was raw and bloody inside, so I sent it back. The waitress offered to bring my baked potato while the chicken was being remade. When I cut into the potato, one entire end was black and rotten. At that point, I showed it to the waitress, canceled my meal, and simply requested a side of fries instead. While we were there, another family was also having multiple issues. Their card had apparently been run incorrectly, requiring refunds and additional charges, and they were still waiting on food they had asked to have boxed to go. The woman eventually became so frustrated that she opened the kitchen door and told the staff she had been there for three hours and just wanted everything corrected so they could leave. I understand that every restaurant can have an off day... However, the number of service, food quality, and kitchen issues we witnessed--not only with our table but with others as well--made this one of the worst dining experiences we've had. I hope management addresses these problems because there is a lot of room for improvement.

The food was good. The salad bar was complete, well maintained, and attractive. The lettuce was crisp, onions were sliced, and tomatoes were firm. Even the dressings were properly stirred and containers were cleaned of any spills. Nice! The Ribeye was cooked to perfection and had been properly seasoned. The baked potato was served pre-split, yet was siping hot. Even the Texas Toast was perfectly prepared and served hot. A big improvement from last trip! Bravo! The server was polite, yet very busy. When I arrived, she appeared to be the only one on duty. About 15 minutes after 12 noon, a second server appeared and seemed to add some much needed help. Ambiance had improved. Although furnishings were the same, everything had been deep-cleaned, from floor to ceiling. Nice job! I'll be back!

It's just that kind of place that brings me so much comfort. This restaurant is reliable, unfussy, and really good at what it does. As is the case throughout the South, the fresh brewed iced tea is one of the highlights. One sip and it immediately tastes like home. My favorite thing on the menu has always been and will always be the Brunswick stew. It's absolute comfort food that's warm, hearty, and nostalgic in a way that hits every time. It's an Eastern North Carolina tradition, and Smithfield BBQ is one of the best in the business. As for other regional specialities, the hushpuppies deserve their own shoutout too. The slightly sweet cornbread batter is perfectly fried every time, which makes these little carb morsels crunchy on the outside yet soft and fluffy on the inside. I've been eating them dipped in ketchup since I was a kid and I'm not about to stop now. Quit quietly judging me, LOL! The bbq sandwiches are messy and not designed to be easy to eat on the go, but the bbq plates are the best deal. I love getting the pulled pork plate with potato salad (the best). Since I'm Eastern N.C. born and raised, I basically was born with a taste for classic vinegar bbq sauce. Smithfield's is terrific, and I love drowning my pork in that tangy goodness. Every bite seriously brings me back to lazy summer Sundays hanging out with my best friend in my Grandmama's grassy backyard. You can't put a price on those culinary memories.   Service is fast, takeout is easy, the dining room's small but cozy, and there's even a drive-through for when you're in a hurry. Smithfield BBQ is not trying to be trendy or fancy, nor have they ever been. It's just a place that serves really solid Eastern North Carolina BBQ done right. For me, Smithfield's isn't just a restaurant, it's a family tradition.

We had a cancelled event in Durham and stopped here on our way back home for dinner. Based on the…read morereviews, we opted for what we thought would be a sure thing and both of us ordered the Friday night, special, Prime Rib. My medium rare was slightly more palatable than his medium-very chewy, but we were both disappointed in the texture. I would guess it was an inferior choice of beef on the part of the meat purveyor. Maybe it will be better if we try the Mad Boar out in the future. The Garden Salad was okay, and the Caesar salad was okay. I would like to point out that I had ONE sliced cherry tomato on the garden salad. What is it about restaurant baked potatoes? When put up beside a homemade one, you know it was cooked in a restaurant-just not as good. Horseradish sauce, au jus, and butter accompaniments were on point. We took a lot of the beef home, in hopes of having some house made French Dip sandwiches tomorrow. Since our concert in Durham was cancelled (Three Dog Night), we elected to sit in the bar area and were sufficiently entertained by a duo from Wilmington (Dos Eddies?) who played guitar and covered hits by Tom Petty, Eagles, Prince, Pure Prairie League and various hits we enjoyed. Besides the band, the highlight of the evening was our server, Chris. We watched him throughout the night wait tables, mix drinks, bus tables, chat up patrons, and do anything and everything to help the business room as smoothly as possible. He is management material! Although I would need another stab at trying out the menu again for a more positive review, I would come back again for the "Bar" experience. The drinks, ambience, and Chris were on point.
