Eat here take out in occasion. Ordered a take out pound of slaw. Now this might not seem a big deal, but if the container had been remotely full I wouldn't have weighed it. You sell it as a pound of slaw so customers should receive a pound. I weighed it in the container and it was barely 15 oz. Shouldn't it be a pound without the container or at least as a stretch a pound with the container. Advertised it as a large if you're not going to honor the weight you state. As I stated it isn't a big deal but integrity is a big deal to me. read more

I pulled into the parking lot at 10:50am and there were a number of groups already waiting in the parking lot waiting to get in. I was just stopping in to get a lemon blueberry pie on the recommendation of one of my neighbors. I was greeted and asked for one to go and let me tell you this was the best pie I have ever had in my 60 years. The restaurant was clean and the menu was extensive. My first visit in the 24 years I've lived in the area. I was very excited and the experience was incredible. The history of the restaurant dates back nearly 70 years. What a wonderful hidden gem. We were on our way from Kure Beach to Greenville. After we left Wilmington there was not a lot of restaurants near by. We walked in around 7 pm on Saturday night the restaurant was spotless, everything was clean from the condiments to the women's bathroom. My husband got the Captain's Platter, it had flounder, oysters, scallops, shrimp, crab cake and two sides. I got two seafood grilled shrimp and scallops with two sides. The seafood was fresh and seasoned just right. The oysters were nice and lumpy. The service could not be better. If you want a soda be prepared to get a can. Don't leave without getting a slice of cake. 16 layers of cake was delicious. We will definitely be back. read more

Hush puppies are the best I've had in as long as I can remember. Very light not dense and chewy. Even the coleslaw gets a mention for not being too sweet or too much dressing. Service was friendly. Upon my first visit to Rose Hill, I was happily surprised by this local establishment. You can travel far a wide over the South and hardly come across a restaurant like this with such a long standing tradition of serving hearty meals to hungry locals in a nondescript spot. Entering the restaurant feels like a combination of a diner and home at the same time. To the right is a hallway that looks strait out of a colonial home. A wood floor stretches down the narrow room, capped by a fireplace with a quaint selection of antiques and pictures. There are multiple rooms beyond this entryway that you can rent out for family and community events. On the walls you will see the history of the restaurant and photos of Ruth Buckner making her locally renown lemon blueberry pie. TIP: Try to get there during blueberry harvest, as this pie is only available seasonally. Once seated, we were handed one page menus with a brief history of the RHR on the back. The prices are very reasonable, most selections are under $10, so I splurged and ordered a fried chicken sandwich, which came out hot with lettuce and tomato, a barbecue sandwich (chopped pork), with a side of collard greens. The chicken sandwich was crispy and tender, the bbq sandwich was what you'd expect from a solid Southern styled eatery - moist and perfect for their house brand tomato based sauce. If you like collard greens, I'd recommend getting a side of them with your meal as they literally seemed to melt in my mouth. They had a light tinge of vinegar, but predominately tasted great with hints of butter and salt. Our waitress was busy and hardworking taking care of several tables during an active lunch hour. Overall, if you are looking for a quick bite, while traveling in or nearby Rose Hill, I'd definitely recommend this for people looking for old school southern grub. Enjoy! read more

They charge me something different every single time I eat here and it's just another country restaurant that doesn't seem to really have all their $h!t together. I only eat here because it's literally the only thing in Rosehill. They also got new ranch and new honey mustard and they're awful. They suck. They actually lost my business because they don't have good ranch anymore or good honey mustard. read more

I really and truly hate to down a place from my home county, BUT facts are facts. A friend of mine was going to be coming through Duplin county and asked me to ride along. I mentioned that the Rose Hill Restaurant had been around forever and supposedly had good food. Perhaps we hit at a bad time, but the hushpuppies were SO greasy that 2 hours later I'm still trying to get the grease out of my mouth. I had the sirloin steak tips, advertised as a daily special for $8.75; but somehow the bill for the 2 came up to $30.00. I'm still puzzled by the math there, since mine was $8.75 and his was $13 even. My meat was good, the green beans were fine, but for me the killer was the over greasy hushpuppies. What's sad to me is that growing up in this area my parents NEVER ate here, I guess I now know why. My friend felt so sick after TRYING to eat, he skipped trying the Key lime pie. So, I can't comment on the desserts. Here's the breakdown: Sirloin tips, good, cooked right, but was overcharged for my plate. Green beans, okay, nothing special. Friends' crab cake tasted very fishy, frozen French fries, slaw that looked like it came from the grocery store, and again the GREASY hushpuppies. Before ANYONE pounces, let it be known that I am a great lover of the hushpuppy! I've been known to eat so many I couldn't eat my "real" food. Their flavor was okay, just GREASY. I'm known to have a cast iron stomach, but I think the iron may be pitted after this. After sleeping on this 2 nights with an upset stomach I have to add the following: Flies were all over the place. Bathroom was dirty. Waitress began cleaning floor right behind us while we were trying to eat. Water wasn't refilled. Would I go here again? Hell, NO! Lunch took a little while due to another large function in the back, however the waitress was very attentive and kept our drinks full. We stopped at Rose Hill restaurant on our way to Myrtle Beach. It was raining on a cold summer day and it was a little bit uncomfortable inside because of the AC. I had the rib eye steak, medium rare, it was cooked to perfection. He had a double cheeseburger. Actually two, because they were tiny, but delicious. This place has one of the best hush puppies I've ever tried. Friendly service, cheap prices, good food. If I'm ever nearby, definitely coming back. read more

I have worked in the area for over 20 years and have visited Rose Hill Restaurant many times. The food is decent across the menu. The ticket times are slow. I can accept these observations but the service is deplorable. The servers are rude and not very attentive. The cashier seems to ring up the same meal differently each visit when prices are same. It is regrettable that I feel impressed to leave such a lack luster review. I do not recommend this restaurant. read more

What a hidden gem in the middle of the Rose Hill countryside. They have the freshest t fried chicken, oysters and shrimp that I've tasted in quite some time. This is a nice restaurant with a warm hometown atmosphere. My parents and I went to dinner here tonight while I was visiting. The service was wonderful. Cindy was our waitress. She was sweet and quite efficient. We asked many questions to which she didn't hesitate to politely respond...even with us arriving 30 mins before closing. There were only 4 other tables being served at the time so it wasn't as busy as one would expect for a Saturday night...perhaps this is a nice norm for a small town. Cindy brought us delicious hush puppies prior to our food arriving. Our food came within about 15 mins or so and was delicious. We had liver with gravy & onions, grilled pork chop (thick, t-bone), grilled ribeye steak...baked sweet potato, string beans, mashed potatoes, turnip greens, baked potato, Italian creme cake. Again, we enjoyed everything and ordered more to take home for tomorrow's lunch. My parents & I plan to make this a monthly date night! read more

Mixed bag of reviews. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive. Went with my hubby and three teenagers on our way to the beach. Previous reviews and grumbling tummies along with limited options sent us past the World's Largest Frying Pan and on to Rose Hill. Fresh fried chicken was excellent. Would have loved the coating to be a bit crispier, but the white meat was cooked well and juicy. Better than grandmas which is plenty juicy, but pink and raw. BBQ pork plate was rated well. Pork sandwich and the two steaks were so so on reviews from the kids. 16 layer cake got a weak review from all of us. Frosting was ok, but not great. Other desserts in the cooler looked better, but my son wanted the 16. I would go back and try it again. Great family restaurant to break up a boring drive. read more
