Decided to make a visit again for the Thanksgiving buffet. If you look at my picture from two years ago, the turkey this time looks nothing like it. This year looked and tasted like a turkey loaf. The taters and stuffing again were like glue again, and trying to get them off the serving spoon was a feat! Everything else was pretty good, incl the desserts, with one exception. The pumpkin pie was Frozen solid!! What a faux pas on Thanksgiving!! I made the Very young manager aware of it who took them all off the dessert buffet. Very sad. The staff is terrific. We had a cancelled event in Durham and stopped here on our way back home for dinner. Based on the reviews, we opted for what we thought would be a sure thing and both of us ordered the Friday night, special, Prime Rib. My medium rare was slightly more palatable than his medium-very chewy, but we were both disappointed in the texture. I would guess it was an inferior choice of beef on the part of the meat purveyor. Maybe it will be better if we try the Mad Boar out in the future. The Garden Salad was okay, and the Caesar salad was okay. I would like to point out that I had ONE sliced cherry tomato on the garden salad. What is it about restaurant baked potatoes? When put up beside a homemade one, you know it was cooked in a restaurant-just not as good. Horseradish sauce, au jus, and butter accompaniments were on point. We took a lot of the beef home, in hopes of having some house made French Dip sandwiches tomorrow. Since our concert in Durham was cancelled (Three Dog Night), we elected to sit in the bar area and were sufficiently entertained by a duo from Wilmington (Dos Eddies?) who played guitar and covered hits by Tom Petty, Eagles, Prince, Pure Prairie League and various hits we enjoyed. Besides the band, the highlight of the evening was our server, Chris. We watched him throughout the night wait tables, mix drinks, bus tables, chat up patrons, and do anything and everything to help the business room as smoothly as possible. He is management material! Excellent service and really good food. The Big Chief was outstanding; melt in your mouth pork and a perfect baked potato. The apple pecan salad was wonderful. We had the pretzel bites for an appetizer, and they were perfect! The establishment is really gorgeous, and since it's December, it was decorated for the holiday, and Santa even came by our table to deliver after dinner mints. What a joyous evening. Everything was wonderful! The atmosphere and decor were unique. The booths had high enough surroundings that you had some privacy. Service was wonderful. Sam A did an excellent job! Food was so so good. Price was less than any chain restaurant (think something like Red Robin) but food and portions were so much better. This place is nice. If you're hosting a lunch or dinner with the fam or coworkers is is a solid spot. Date night, special occasion def visit this place. I got a chef salad with chicken and it really was delicious, i just wish they used different salad parts lol there was over half of the salad was the thick hard center part but the ranch is a mush have. The ham on it was cubed not sliced and the cheese was shredded walmart cheese. Son got the BBQ plate and he said its a must have. I WILL be going back. The only reason this is a 3 for me is because the food (delicious) was very basic, like you make it at home, it wasn't anything special looks wise.... the service was bad. I don't know if i just didn't look like the part or i did something that upset our waitress but it was very negative, I could say more but its ok if people have bad days, were all human. If you order the crab dip, you will leave there still trying to find the crab! I complained about no crab in the dip and the waitress acted like it was my problem and still charged the $15 without bringing out a manager or offering any resolution. It was our first time here on a Saturday night(Thanksgiving wknd). It was after 8pm and we were greeted right away. Our daughters were with us, so we sat in the dining room but they have a pub with live music which looked nice and lively! We started with the barbecue wings and pork nachos! The nachos were good but the wings were ok. Husband thought they lacked meat, I felt they were over cooked! Our youngest had the junior burger, hubby had the steak with baked potato, the mad chicken sandwich and the chicken wrap with a side ceasar salad. Husband liked the steak and had flavor, the youngest said the burger was ok, the mad chicken was ok and didn't really care for the potato wedges and my wrap had more shredded cheese than chicken. The atmosphere is cool n we can see ourselves coming back maybe for drinks n listen to music. As for the food maybe we will give it one more chance when in the area! I was scrolling through Instagram and came across someone's photo of the Mad Boar's fried pecan pie. It was covered in delicious looking dough and a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream. I like to support local businesses, so on my way to Wilmington I stopped by and ordered a piece to go. What I received upon opening said box was nothing close to a piece of fried pecan pie. It was a goopy piece of pie without a shred of fried anything to be found. The pie was ok (though I'm wondering if it was store bought) but I was jipped out of $8. This place is a joke. My entree: - Herb Grilled Chicken Breast - Sauteed Squash, Zucchini, and Onions (side) I enjoyed my entree and portions were adequate. For dessert I had cheesecake w/ blueberry topping - it wasn't overly sweet and a nice way to end the meal. In my opinion the menu is limited with minimal options. On our way home from the beach, my husband and I decided to stop in for lunch at the Mad Boar. I loved the pub-like atmosphere, from all of the stained glass to the dark wood furnishings. Service was great too; our waitress was quick to offer recommendations and stayed on top of drink refills. I went with the chef salad with their homemade ranch dressing. The dressing was fantastic but the rest of the salad, while fresh, was not particularly memorable. My husband ordered the fried chicken sandwich and absolutely loved everything about it. Worst meal ever tonight. We have been to this place many times through the years. This place was the best before Covid when they had a salad bar. Now no salad bar. Tonight my burger was hockey puck. I've never had so much of a horrible burger. I ended up eating the bun alone as I was starving and the waitress was no where to be found. My husbands shrimp was barely cooked. Very nice experience at Mad Boar on last Saturday, 11 Dec 2021. We had a party of five for my sister's birthday. We had great service with thousands of sweet tea refills. Yummy yummy sweet tea. The best reaction at the table was to the shrimp and grits. The woman who ordered that kept looking at the picture on the website until it came. And it lived up to it in her opinion. I had the calabash shrimp and potato wedges. It was really good. It also traveled and heated up well. I took it back to Kansas with me on a plane and didn't eat it until Tuesday. And it was still good heated up in my air fryer. My cousin had the chicken sandwich and my sister had the ribs. Everyone enjoyed their food. We all had side salads and shared chicken wings as starters. All very good. Hadn't been in awhile. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! read more

The setting is very nice, and the service was very good. My servers were nice and very attentive. I ate here two nights in a row, and the first meal was quite good. The gumbo was nice and spicy, with lots of chicken and sausage. The salad was big, and fresh, and very tasty. The second evening everything was unfortunately mediocre. The beef brisket was really fatty, like 50% fat. The sweet potato fries were cold, and the fried green tomatoes were mushy inside. It was like a totally different restaurant. This place is so much different inside than it looks on the outside. I was envisioning a standard commercial type of establishment and when I walked inside it had an Irish pub feel, including lots of stained glass. We were greeted a few minutes after waiting by the host stand and taken to our table. The table was super wobbly and was spilling our drinks so we asked to move to a table across the aisle. We ordered a philly cheesesteak sandwich without bread, with fries(wedges) and 2 chicken tender kids meals. I had the daily special of breaded mahi bites with fries(wedges). My mahi bites were way beyond what I expected, and I couldn't believe they were only $10! The kids meals were huge and my husband's cheesesteak had so much flavor! The restaurant is housed in a truly unique building with a definite medieval feel. We arrived at 1:30 on a Sunday and had to wait for 25 minutes to be seated in a booth at the bar. Our server was friendly, prompt and kept our drinks filled. The food was definitely mixed. I tried the steak-and-cheese with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was on the smaller side of acceptable, but was served hot and OK. The sweet potato fries were clearly not cooked to order, but were also OK. My wife ordered the "hand breaded" chicken tenders. We both decided they must have been hand breaded at the factory as they were clearly frozen and definitely not very good. Her fried green tomatoes also seemed like they were frozen as well. Her meal was not OK. The Mad Boar's main attraction is clearly the venue, not the food. This is a three-star review only because the location definitely offsets the frozen chicken tenders and frozen fried green tomatoes. Recommended if you're in driving on I-40 near Wallace and want something other than chain-restaurant fast food. read more
