When a Muncie local tells me to get the toasted ravioli at The Guardian Brewing, I get the toasted ravioli at The Guardian Brewing. Now, I could probably never eat another toasted ravioli for the rest of my life and I'd be perfectly fine, but I had to try them. Not bad! I've had toasted ravioli in St. Louis, which is the supposed birthplace of the food, and these would rival any in the Gateway City. I didn't just want to sit at the bar and stuff my face full of cheese and pasta. So I ordered a pizza, so that I could also stuff my face full of cheese and bread. The pizzas here are sized for an individual to enjoy, but they could also be a nice little sharable snack between two people. I got the Bill the Butcher, which is a meat-forward pie with beer-infused pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni, bacon, chicken, sausage, ham and steak. It's a lotta meat! But it was delicious. All of the pizzas have interesting names and even more interesting ingredients, and now I'm kind of wishing I had ordered the Crust Punk Deluxe. Maybe next time! I feel like I missed an opportunity by not getting any of the beer here. But I did buy a pub glass to take home with me. I just wasn't feeling like beer when I visited, but the next time I'm in Muncie, I will definitely stop by for some beer. The service here is very accommodating and friendly. We love coming to the Guardian. You can come as a family, with friends, with coworkers, or on a date night. We have sat at the bar, or in the area by the pool table and played cards. Our food has always been tasty, and my mom and I love the street pickle pizza! My boyfriend loves trying new beers. The servers are always very nice. I would recommend to anyone who hasn't been! We sat inside at the bar area, our bartender was very knowledgeable on beer and give us samples of what he thought we would like. Heard they make their own root beer, so stopped when I was in town. Headed to a wedding after, so no time or need for regular beer just then. Needs signage. GPS took me to it, and I saw a parking lot nearby, but it's a nondescript building and nothing said the name or even "brewery," except a small logo on a door not visible from the street, and a mural inside also not visible from the street. Complaint only holds when the place is open, at least during warm weather. When it's closed, or during cold weather, the garage doors are down and it does have the name in big bold letters on that. But on a warm spring day for a person from out of town, there was zero indication that this was the right place. Sorry. Long gripe. Once I knew it was the right place, I had a good experience. Friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. An assortment of drinks. And a darn good root beer. $3 I think for a pint of root beer, and they offered me a big sample before that. I wish there were more breweries like this in Chandler! Maybe there are and I just need to do some more exploring. I love a brewery that goes heavy on stouts. Guardian had 3 or 4 different stouts they brew that were on top when I went here. I had to get a flight, so I tried the Ogre milk stout, the Rainbow Pop IPA, the Strawberry Milkshake IPA, and an oatmeal stout. I think I also had a cream ale, but I don't remember. The strawberry milkshake was actually really good, and I enjoyed the oatmeal stout as well. The pizza options were also very creative. I went with the something punk with bacon, garlic aioli, and steak. It was really good! Different than a traditional pizza and so filling. I also love the space. It was a big open warehouse, but not too loud so you could enjoy a conversation with your group easily. The jukebox was a fun addition and we were hoping to play some pool but the two tables were taken while we were there. I don't know that I'll be back in Muncie anytime soon but if I can get my friends to ship me some beer I will definitely ask for stuff from Guardian! read more

I was told it was in the oven (my son said something earlier). They could have been honest and told us it was missed. Instead, she offered to take half off; yes, for a 2 hour wait. Her excuse? My favs were the Fudge Pop Porter and the Kitty Whispers (sour). I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. I had one of their flatbread pizzas and it was delicious. Best pizza in town. I don't think Muncie is a great place for food in general but the crust punk is probably the best pizza I've ever had. Super creative toppings/flavors which you can't go wrong with. Only downside is that the place is usually busy (rightfully so) therefore the wait is usually a bit, but the pizza is made in whole for each person so it's fresh and always worth the wait. read more

We had the opportunity to visit Muncie so we looked for local breweries. We found Guardian for our first stop, and we weren't disappointed. It's tucked away a bit and parking was a little confusing but we figured it out. They have a few sours on tap and a milkshake IPA that was fantastic. We only had time for a snack so we got the cheese bread which was so good. The best part of the visit was talking to the manager Jason. We chatted about beer, Ball State, and Muncie. Guardian Brewing is a Muncie GEM!! You'll find Guardian in a big industrial building with a huge open garage door (two signs of a great brewery if you ask me). They have a great selection of a variety of beers. The best part? The names are incredible and the graphics to go with each beer are stunning. Good breweries have great beer. GREAT breweries are creative, have fun with it, want to spread their love for the craft, AND have great beer (in my opinion). I walked up to the bar and ordered the "Haze Tupid" which, cmon, SO FUN. And it's now a favorite indiana hazy of mine. I got a flight and really none of them missed. They also have personal pizzas to order and had so many good flavors. Wow! This place is a gem! I was able to try the beer at a concert in Muncie. The rainbow pop, while most breweries do this beer with a IPA and they all taste alike, they went with a Pale Ale where the fruit shines! One of the best beers I've had in my life. The brewery was close to the venue so I went after the show. They have a strawberry milkshake that is like having a actual milkshake, they can put this up to ANY milkshake beers and this would WIN! The apricot and fruit beer also was great! Decided to stay for some pizza, once again unbelievable! So good. Everything had flavor from the airy crust to the beer infused sauce (most places do beer in the crust as I do as well they went another way and it works) the toppings are plenty and they have numerous house made specialty's , and a build your own with numerous sauce choices. Indy was voted a top 5 craft brewery area, and I hope they included this beer and food in the voting because to me this is one of the best breweries I've been to. I'll go to Muncie now just for this brewery, and pizza! This is truly a diamond in the rough!!! Fantastic beer, even better food! This place knows what they are doing and are doing it very well! I hope the beer becomes available in indianapolis as it's better then most breweries that are there. Thanks for putting out such a great product! I'm hoping they expand into indianapolis as they would take Indy by storm with what they are bringing to the table! I worked for Dominos for 3 yrs in college and I can tell you from tasting it, the oven is filthy and should be cleaned periodically throughout the night, because you can taste all the leftover burnt pieces of crust, if it is not! Each time I eat there, the whole pizza tastes like burned crust! The oven needs a serious cleaning throughout the day, not just at the end of the night. The oven was also way too hot and the dough was badly burnt on the edges and goopy in the middle. Did I mention it was small and expensive on top of that? Stopped in to try a flight and I liked every beer I tried! That doesn't happen often, so this was a great trip for me. Flights come with your choice of four 5-oz beers (includes standard and seasonal) for $7. Located on the south east side of downtown, The Guardian is located inside a large complex that is mainly awaiting tenants. Parking is suggested for the lot across Jackson Street just south of the building. I actually missed it since the sign isn't very easy to see when you are driving and watching traffic. Still, my GPS helped me hone in on it and I was soon inside the entrance on the west side of the building and went through the second set of doors guarded by a suit of armor. Inside, the space is huge with high ceilings, a three sided bar on the left, the seating area/performance area to the right, and the brewing area behind the seating on the right. The bar is rather large with space for the bartender to walk on either side of the taps. The far wall is lined with watercolor paintings, while the back wall has posters of the different brews on tap. The larger posters are for the standard beers they carry while the smaller ones are for the seasonal. The service was friendly and conversational even as the place started perking up with business as we got later into the afternoon. She gave me a slip of paper to write out my flight selections with the order that I wanted them. I started with the Beauty School Dropout American Amber (6% 28 IBU) which was a solid amber with more flavor than most places I've tried. Not too strong, but lots of taste. I moved on to the Bookkeeper Pale Ale (6% 47) which had more hoppy notes at the first sip that migrated to more fruity or citrus flavor with the following sips. Quite good! My third choice was a seasonal Five Dots Vanilla Porter (6% 34). This was made with natural vanilla and had subtle notes of coffee in the background. But make no mistake, this is a gateway drink to porters for folks who don't think they like dark beers. It will change your mind! Tons of flavor that doesn't taste like beer; more like a beverage that could sneak up on you because your brain would tell you this might be a kids drink...but it's not! I finished off with the Rez American IPA (7% 81). Full of hops but not as bitter despite the high IBU content, I really enjoyed this one, especially after the sweetness of the porter. Another solid choice. Good beer, good service, friendly atmosphere. I didn't ask about bringing in food, but I assume that can be accommodated from some of the local restaurants. I first went to Guardian after they first opened. They have a WONDERFUL place. The concrete Biergarten is nice for nice days and they open the garage door often. I recently went to their Oktoberfest and Brass Band night. I had the 1872 Maerzen. It was a solid Festbier. I was a little let down with the Rez IPA, but I'm not a high IPA fan, anyway. I have not had any of the food, but watching the plates go past me made my mouth water. I recommend checking them out when in Muncie. I'm not sure what makes the Crust Punk Deluxe different exactly but it's good. I tried The Guardian while on vacation in Muncie recently, and I wish it were local to me! Maybe it's a good thing it isn't, since I'd be there all the time if it were. The real stand-out to me was the pizza, which is saying something as the beer was also very good. I'd planned to try the Japhilly Cheesesteak, but I'd eaten several cheesesteaks the week before in Philly, so I tried the Purple Hippo instead, and was not disappointed. Great quality toppings, good soft-yet-supporting-the-toppings crust, piping hot from the oven... I used to live in what I termed the "pizza heaven" part of Columbus, Ohio, where there were five quality pizza places of varying styles within walking distance. The Guardian's pizzas are right up there with those. The beer also was quite good. I tried the Squirrel Shoes, Neon Viking, Five Dots... I forget which others were on the flight but I suppose that means those three were the standouts. Why would you ever order another margarita when Squirrel Shoes exists? Well, I guess because it isn't on draft right now, but when it is, it's the way to go. The only downside? The beer list on the website defaults to "All", teasing you with delicious-sounding flavors that aren't all available right now.
