Today the gumball gourmet came to our office on fooda and while I was reluctant to try the gumbo, I went ahead and did so. While, it wasn't that bad. Best Gumbo in Atlanta! I am a gumbo connoisseur and am picky about my gumbo. This is delish! Perfect ratio of spice, rice, Lima bean, peppers. So, it was a complete accident that we found this place. My co-worker and I were headed over to Which Wich to eat..as we are in town working and knew it was fast. Well, when we got there, it wasn't there. But what was there? This place called The Gumbo Gourmet. So, we walked in, and the first thing we noticed was the smell. Boy oh Boy, did it smell good. I mean really good. Like, really, really good. So, there was only one thing to do, and that was to talk to the owner about what they had,, what we should get...and decided he was getting the Gumbo, I decided on the combo Po'Boy. While we were waiting for the food, a gentleman was sitting there eating. And what do we do, being a Southerner in town? We all got to talking. Talking about the food, talking about how good the food is, and talking about how we're going to love the food. During our talks, I found something cool. It turns out that both of us grew up in Louisiana, Him, just a little SW of me off the levies of Lake Ponchatrain. So, out came the food. My sandwich, his Gumbo, it came out and we both took in a deep breath. The andouille and the fried shrimp, the remoulade that she said is made from scratch...the smells all came together to remind me of home. I took a bite, the bread was so soft, it was so good...the flavors all came together and I have to say, was really good. My buddy said the gumbo was really good. I can tell you this, it was just enough food that I wasn't hungry, but I wasn't so full that I thought I would pop. I will say, when I come back, this is going to be one place that I know I will be back to for more food. I heard from inside information that red beans are going to be on the menu. If they are going to be done like we do them back home or like they were describing, I may be eating that as a meal on its own. Wanted to give this place a shot being that I'm from New Orleans & know an authentic gumbo. NOT THE CASE HERE. They charge simply for the roux & rice without ANY protein which is unheard of! The proteins are all separate charges & if you choose to get all three (shrimp, chicken & sausage) it add up to about $22 for a 16oz. INSANE! The gumbo is very inconsistent from all of the photos I've seen online. Let me not fail to mention, MY GUMBO HAD LIMA BEANS IN IT! They DONT tell you that they use okra & the roux wasn't rich at all. A total ripoff. This guy charges $12 for just rice and roux no meat!!! If you add meat that's $3 each. I know gumbo cause I make it and hence the name gumbo!! It should come with all meats unless you have an allergy!! By the time you add meats all three to make it true gumbo you at $22. We were at a conference so stopped to pick up some dinner. We met the owner, Cassandra. She was awesome. We got some seafood gumbo which came with rice and cornbread. It was fabulous. The "gumbo" has a good flavor. I only gave 3 stars because it is not really a gumbo. It is more a vegetable soup. My order had corn, green beans and peas. I've never had these vegetables in gumbo before. read more
