I am a foster parent of a 4 yo with autism, and just tried to take her to get her first haircut at hairy elephant. This was our experience. We requested a very light trim and no shampoo or anything else. P First, our appointment was originally scheduled for last Friday at 4:30pm, however about 2 hours before my kiddo's appointment, I received a phone call from Hairy Elephant requesting to cancel and reschedule my child's appointment. The reason I was given for the cancellation was because there were no other appointments scheduled for the afternoon before my child's 4:30pm... I was obviously frustrated because I already had called off work early so that I could take my daughter to get haircut, but I told them we could reschedule for the following Friday instead. Fast forward to her appointment this Friday... we show up, and we're not even there for 10 minutes before we were told that the person cutting her hair was unable to complete the haircut because she didn't have enough time to cut "ethnic hair." My jaw dropped and we quickly left and will not be returning. I would not recommend anyone with a child on the spectrum or a Black child to ever go near this place. Not only are the staff not accommodating to kids on the spectrum, they are uneducated when it comes to how to cut hair that isn't straight and white. 0/10 experience. read more

My one grandson has sensory problems and he rarely gets his haircut with out a meltdown. I was so impressed how some how Vicki was able to cut his hair so well !!! Best haircut my grandson ever had! I brought my well mannered preschooler in for her haircut. She has very curly hair and is timid with strangers. Prior visits here have been amazingly positive; the staff was always kind, smiley and ready to engage with my child (with little or no prompting by me). today's visit fell very short. The salon feels dirty and outdated. The cars which were once whimsical are now dilapidated and peeling. the movies selections are still on DVDs, which is fine but a fire stick would work wonders. Our stylist seems to have very little interest in working with children. She began to brush and pull on my child's curly hair which is expected, but when she got upset the stylist would make snarky comments about "that's how they are" and "I'm doing my best with this mess". Her hair was not a "mess" or tangled. What once was the place to be is now long gone and we will mourn its loss at a different salon. read more

If I could give more stars, I would! Let's start off with the fact that I called super last minute for an appointment the next day during holiday season, and even though they were booked, they offered to put me on a cancellation list. When they called to say a spot opened up, I gladly took it. When I arrived, our stylist, Jenna Marie, made my daughter so comfortable, and was so accommodating, offering her the choice of which chair she wanted to sit in, and which movie she wanted to watch. Once that was sorted, it was off to the hair wash station to choose the scent of her shampoo. They had so many flavors to choose from! After her wash, Jenna Marie advised about length of cut, and explained why it would be best to cut to a certain length. After the cut, she expertly braided my daughter's superfine hair into the Elsa braid of her dreams. My daughter played in the engaging play area while I settled the bill up front. After a quick look through the accessories area, I mentioned how happy and appreciative I was at all the different bow options, including several different holiday bow beyond simply Christmas. Joshlynn (I hope I'm spelling that correctly), the receptionist, then performed an incredible gift of kindness and generosity, when she gifted one to us with her own money. It was so unnecessary and unexpected, but made a huge impact in our day, and inspired us to pay that kindness forward. This was an A++ experience, and we can't wait to return! read more

I recently took my children for a haircut here. We had been going for about 5 years. I took my youngest for his first haircut recently, and was dismayed to see that none of the staff was wearing masks. The St. Louis County mask mandate went into effect the day before also (7/26/21). Their main clientele are children - most of which couldn't be vaccinated if they want to. They should show more care for the kids (and families) they serve. Even if there weren't a mandate - which there was - they should be wearing masks just because they are dealing with a large population of kids under 12 years old who can't be vaccinated. It is irresponsible, uncaring, and lacks any sort of compassion for a business that is targeted toward children. We won't be going back again. read more

Very unhappy with the cut!!! Wish I could get my money back! Went there today for my daughter's (just turned 1) first haircut. Nora the stylist was nice and friendly. I told her to keep the adorable little natural swoop in my daughters bangs, as that was my favorite! I also said I wanted to keep the length in the top. She said she understood, then gave my daughter a blunt cut across the bangs! Then cut the length throughout. It looks like a little Dutch boy / bowl cut. NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR. My husband was furious that she "looks like a boy now that she has a boys haircut. Even the "blunt" bangs were choppy and uneven. I know kids squirm but my daughter was surprisingly still and perfect. Save your $20. The cuteness factor did not outweigh the terrible cut! Here's to hoping it grows out quickly. read more

Gross. I guess this place has changed since they had good reviews. Its filthy to say the least. The staff is unprofessional. Its a cesspool of germs. The seat they put my baby on was covered in another kids hair- in chunks. I looked down and my child had a chunk of another kids hair on his pants. It was all over the seat and floor. She didnt want to clean her tools. No one, literally no one, wore masks or washed their hands. The toys im sure are dirty too. The stylist was not dressed "kid friendly" with her tight buttcrack leggins, which was awkward... She didnt ask if it was okay to use the shaver on a 12 month old baby and started using it without a guard, which cut him twice! She didnt seem to care. He was bleeding and crying at which point I tried to comfort him and she said "i got it!" and wanted me to move away. She tried to keep going with the shaver and i told her to just stop. Hes a baby. Wtf. The haircut itself is wonky anyway. She had no business working with kids. I hope my baby doesnt get sick. We were polite, but probably too polite, I should've really been more assertive at her. We got our kids' first haircuts here and we were very pleased with the experience. Jamie did such a good job! She explained everything to my daughter in kid-friendly terms so my daughter was more comfortable. She cut my daughter's hair exactly like I asked, and she styled a pretty braid with butterfly clips that my daughter loved. Jamie also was very accommodating with my special needs son. Since this was both of their first haircuts, they each received a certificate, a photo, and a lock of hair. I think that made it very special! We are so excited to come back! read more

Like some others have said, I'm unsure how this place has so many 5 star reviews. The staff is super unfriendly, my sons hairstylist Vickie was very snippy with me the whole time because I had his measurements removed because I didn't like his haircut the last time she cut it. I tried to have higher hopes this time and was wrong. I just had to pay to have someone else fix his hair that I tried to tell her was uneven (very uneven) while we were there but I was over the snippyness from her. The girl next to us at the time cutting the little boys hair who was maybe 6, she at one point rudely told him "if you just keep your head down this would be much easier". Just all around not happy with this second experience at all and will not be coming back. For a first-time haircut, I cannot imagine a better place to bring your kiddo. They were very sweet and kept our daughter entertained. We took our son to the Hairy Elephant for his first official haircut, and they did a great job! He got to sit in a cute train chair, watch videos, and got a certificate with his picture and a lock of hair. It was adorable! Our stylist did a great job too! We had my son's first and second haircuts here. They give you a certificate with a lock of hair on it, which is cute, and the stylists were very nice and extremely patient (I suppose they'd have to be, to cut screaming kids' hair all day long). Haircuts are expensive ($20 for cut only, no shampoo). The thing that will keep me from ever returning, however, is that the salon is NOT CLEAN. The little cars that the kids sit in for their cuts are FULL of hair from previous cuts. They need to be cleaned out WAY more often than they are, if not after every cut. I'd read some unhappy reviews about this salon and so was slightly hesitant to bring my almost-2 year old here, but he's wiggly and cries during cuts so I decided our chances of a decent cut were best here. My son loved the train set that they have to play with at the front. That was the only thing he liked. We had a great experience with Becky, she let us pick a movie to play while she cut his hair. I showed her a picture of what I was thinking and she got it right away. Even though my son cried and tried to get up and get away the whole time, she managed to give him a great cut! I am so pleased. He got a sucker afterward and was happy right away and went back to playing with the train while I paid. Overall, I would totally recommend this salon. They love the kids and are very understanding of them. A few notes: 1. Make an appointment! 2. They take credit cards and you can tip on your card too. 3. Be realistic of your expectations of any kids cut. If your kid is wiggly like mine you should expect some imperfections with the cuts. My son has had his hair cut here a few times. The experience has been hit or miss. The haircuts have been hit or miss. The stylists and receptionists have been hit or miss. Some stylists can cut well on a kid who can't sit still and others can't. If you're going to do kids' haircuts, you have to be able to give a good one even through the squirming. The last visit was our last visit, and it's because of the receptionist who was at the desk on Saturday, February 20, 2022 in the early afternoon. I don't know her name, but she has no customer service skills whatsoever. She interrupts, her attitude is terrible, and she clearly doesn't care about how she represents the business. We ran into a lot of traffic on our way to the appointment (and it's right off of Manchester, so naturally getting there is a horrible experience to begin with), and we got there about 12 minutes after the appointment time. Some of that is our fault, sure. There is a policy that states they cannot guarantee service if you're more than 10 minutes late. It's not written as an absolute. It's up to the judgement of whoever happens to be at the front desk at the time. Now, policy can be delivered with compassion, or it can be delivered in a condescending, argumentative way. Receptionist chose to be aggressively condescending and interrupted more or less everything I said. If this woman happens to be there, pray you're not late for any reason in or out of your control, because you have to make appointments weeks in advance (usually 3 or more), and she will enforce the policy more strictly than it is written. If you have to enforce policy, make an effort to appear that you care. Is that too much to ask from a place that charges THAT much for a haircut? We'll save money and go somewhere with a better experience, even if the salon isn't as cute, and we'll probably have an equal chance at getting a decent cut at a walk-in place. read more

I give this place a 2 because, as I understand the concept behind all the movies and 'excitement' for the kids to look at during the $20 cut, what I noticed was my child looking up and down and left and right....I've never seen him so unable to keep his head straight...there was so much to look at. My son (5) got to pick out and watch a movie while sitting in, honking the silent horn of and moving the steering wheel side to side of a blue jeep truck while I explained to the stylist how we'd like a #2 buzz cut with a top fade 'mohawk'...I even had a photo. She did a pretty good job with the buzz but told me she'd never done a Mohawk or fade and that she was just wingin' it. My son had SO much hair on his neck, face and INSIDE his shirt, he was squirming around and complaining about being itchy...it was the first time I'd ever questioned the purpose of the apron. I did like the idea of him being able to mix his own shampoo scent (of which he chose apple, cotton candy, orange and blueberry) for his hair wash. That was fun for him and he really enjoyed it. Actually, I really liked that they offered to wash his hair to get all the little sharp shards out....maybe this is why it's $18 and some change (+tip). The stylists' all looked like they had been working with kids all day...oh wait...our appt was at 5pm so they had been and the receptionist wasn't too friendly....but then again ... It WAS 5pm. Maybe that's why the waiting area was so dirty. Oh well. My son's hair seemed to take on a life of its own the next day...the 'hair cutter' missed a huge strip of hair (about 3-4 inches) along the crown....maybe because she was so fast..... Overall it was fine but I think I'd rather take him to The Hair Saloon where they specialize in boys/mens hair and do buzz/fades all day all while paying much less without all the extra noise and 'STUFF'. Don't get me wrong...I love seeing my kids have fun, it's why we go to Chuck-e-Cheese but I also like my son to learn to 'be still' and what better way to learn this valuable trait than in a barbers chair...getting a nice even cut is also nice. read more

So I have been trying to find a place to help with my son's curly hair. Needless to say we will not be back. I scheduled a curly hair consult (which I did not get, they said the receptionist wrote it down wrong) So instead of spending an hour there it was less than 10 mins. I told her I read to cut curly hair dry and the first thing she did was wet it and started chopping away. Its so short now hardly any curls. This was on their website of how they handle curly hair and this was not the service he recieved NOTE: We'll be cutting your child's hair DRY, then shampooing/conditioning the hair afterwards. To get the most from your consultation, it's best to shampoo and condition your child's hair as usual, but let it dry as it falls naturally so that we can detect every curl, wave and cowlick--please, no brushing, combing, clips, headbands, caps, hats, etc. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to call in advance. read more

I was stuck in traffic and arrived 1 min past the appointment time and the woman turned us away. I had driven all the way out from the city and my sons haircut takes less than 15 minutes to do, but the woman at the front desk insisted that since I was 60 seconds past the cutoff time, that I had to reschedule. She was rude and clearly didn't care and just kept repeating herself like a robot. No management was available. Just a sad place that clearly cares nothing about a mom's busy schedule trying to manage everything. I will certainly never be back. read more

My husband and I decided to take our twin girls, who are 13 months old, to get a trim. We thought the distraction of the videos and "car" seats would keep them occupied while they got their hair snipped. The women who cut their hair were quick and friendly with our girls, but they didn't do a great job. One of my girls has sweet curls in the back, and when the stylist asked me what I wanted, I told her to just trim up the pieces in her face and around her ears. Unfortunately, she spent more time trimming the back of her hair, then she did the front :( My other daughter just needed a little taken off the back and sides. Her stylist asked if I wanted a little style in the back and I said that would be great. Now, my daughter is a squirmy little thing and she was swatting at the stylist's hands and everything, but I'm still bummed about the way her hair turned out. It's completely uneven in the back! As if all of that isn't bad enough, the worst part was when we were ready leave. My husband went to the front counter to pay, while I entertained the girls in the waiting area (lots of fun stuff for them to play with!). My husband stood there for FIVE minutes while our 2 stylists and the receptionist chatted about something on the computer. Literally, they were 2 feet from my husband, sitting behind the counter, chatting with each other, while ignoring my husband and I. We seriously thought about walking out without paying. Oh, and it cost us over $40! Very disappointed in our experience. read more

I hate that this is the only option we have for a Children's Salon. I have been taking my now 3 year old here since his 1st haircut at 1yr. I have had friendly stylist and not so friendly stylist. I have seen maybe 3 or 4 different girls working behind the counter and all of them have acted like they hate their job. Overall not a very friendly place, not what you would expect from a specific children's place. The hours are super inconvenient for busy families and working parents also. We took our son for his 1st haircut and Molly did great! She was patient with him moving some and I lobe the certificate they give you if you wish. It comes with a picture of them and locks of their hair. It was only $1.00 extra and it was totally worth it! I do think they could clean the toys out and also the race car seats the kids sit in a little more. Maybe their old, but they look like they need a good scrub down. Love this place! My 5 yr old son had a great experience here. He has special needs & has a hard time sitting still, but the hair stylist (Molly) was very patient & worked very well with him. She did a great job! The haircut was great & she then washed his hair with shampoo that he picked out. They have several choices of good smelling shampoos (cotton candy, watermelon, cupcake, cherry, etc.) that the kids get to pick out themselves. The total cost was $20. There are also some play stations with a good assortment of toys for the kids to enjoy while they wait - or before/after the haircut if there is no wait. They recommend making an appointment, but also take walk-ins. We went at 3:00 on a Thursday & fortunately there wasn't a wait. I highly recommend this place! read more

Miss Becky has been our stlyist during this time and she has done a great job with each visit. Our boys love going and always come away with nice looking haircuts.
