My daughter is nervous about change but wanted a drastic cut and unusual color combination for homecoming and senior photos--bright pink with green highlights layered cut. Andrea nailed it, and even though my daughter left the store in a panic, the cut and color were PERFECT. She loved it a day later. Her hair looked fantastic, laid just right, and suits her perfectly. I definitely need to update this review after I get used to my new hair. I went to Dale despite the warnings by others on Yelp because a.) he did one of the cutest haircuts I've ever seen on someone, b.) those reviews were old so I discounted them. I didn't have a horrific experience, but I think that's because I can roll with the flow. Someone else might have had the same experience as I did and be horrified. Let me say first off that the cut is fantastic. It's the experience with the color that has me freaking out. He first told me that my current blonde color washes out my face and he wants to add a "light brown" as a base color and then put highlights on top. Um...okay...I didn't ask for light brown but I was ready for some sort of a change so I said okay. Yikes. It's VERY DARK BROWN now, darker than my hair has ever ever been and does not look natural to me. He teased me throughout the session with statements like, "Remember, it's only hair," and "You can always change it back," which I took as joking but others would take as offensive or defensive on his part. He did not argue that this turned out to be dark brown, not light brown, but he also did not offer to lighten it (and I didn't ask...yet). I'm trying to get used to it, and it's only been 2 days. Most of my friends who have seen it think it's great and that it isn't really that different, and they're the kind of friends who would say if they thought it was bad. Only one has been hesitant about the change so far. So, my plan is to live with it for a few more days, see if it lightens on its own, see if I lighten on my own too, and then get back in touch if I need it changed back. I had my hair cut twice here. My first haircut was great, loved the curly styling walk through, etc. My second haircut with the same person was absolute hell. He seemed distracted, did not listen to what I wanted, and then literally cut the curls out of my hair. I had a lot of hope coming here because they "specialize in curly hair" but my hair was WRECKED. Months later it's growing back and my curl pattern is still a hot mess. It's going to probably take a year of growth at this point to get back to normal. The stylist maybe was having a bad day but now I have to have a bad hair day for months :( read more

I have been going to Bouffant for the past 10 years and Erin is the absolute best. She "gets" my thick - straightish with a bit of wave - hair. She listens, makes thoughtful suggestions and explains what my part will be in a particular style that I may think I want. I don't spend a lot of time styling my hair, and if I bring in a picture that I want to try, Erin is very specific in sharing with me what all is involved. I just took my son to Erin - he is 14 with thick hair that was in a weird phase. She listened to him and they came up with a fantastic style that's easy for him to work with, but yet a real style. My roommate always gets her hair cut at Bouffant Daddy on Manchester, and they do wonderful things to hair that she historically has been known to torture. They ended her hair-destructive ways by teaching her how to do it herself! It was incredible. She wouldn't listen to all her friends when we told her her hair sucked; she needed a paid professional to tell her. I'm digressing here. I generally cut my own hair. Graduation was about to roll around, though, and I hadn't had a professional cut since the last time I shaved my head. I decided it was time to pay someone to wrangle my hair. I was instantly intrigued by Bouffant Daddy just because of the studio's name. WHO'S YO BOUFFANT DADDY. You get it. This was a very positive experience. Everybody in there was friendly and laid-back, and everybody seemed to be having a good time. Honestly, I can't remember a lot of specifics, because to me it was just a haircut. Julie did a fantastic job. Average prices, I think. A men's haircut was $20ish and well worth it. The next time I need a professional hand to guide my hair, it'll be Julie's at Bouffant Daddy. I love Bouffant Daddy - Erin Slankard is my curly hair savior!! It seems until I found Bouffant Daddy I carried a curse: whenever I found a stylist whom I liked AND could make my curly hair look good, she'd leave. She would have a baby, move away to a different state, etc (this has happened to me with doctors too). So when I finally found Erin at Bouffant Daddy through recommendations online, I was very optimistic she might be the one to stick. She was (and as an aside, she'll eventually be co-owner of Bouffant Daddy solidifying her in the hair styling industry in St. Louis.) Turns out I wasn't. After a few years of going to her, I ended up going to Atlanta, GA for college which is a little bit of a drive from Maplewood. However, as many of you ladies know, once we find a stylist, we tend to hold on to him / her like grim death. So every time I came back for a visit, I'd schedule a cut with Erin. This timed out beautifully until last May when I graduated from college and found a full-time job in Atlanta. Nuts - back to the drawing board. But that's another saga. Anyway - Erin's the best. She's got perfectly straight hair but she can cut any type, she uses a combination of Curly Girl Deva products, Bumble & Bumble and Ouidad, and I always leave feeling like a million bucks. She cuts my hair dry (like most stylists who know a thing about curls should) then rinses it, cuts some more wet, sets pins in my hair and lets me dry the top under the hood. After that, she uses a diffuser to dry all the longer parts (my hair's past my shoulders a bit even when curly). In addition to the great treatment I get from Erin, she teaches me all kinds of neat tricks whenever I go to see her. She showed me a cool updo I can do myself with bobby pins, introduced me to the Deva Curl diffuser attachement and my latest and greatest weapon: the heat wand that revitalizes curls and makes them look natural on days I don't wash my hair. Great to use before a date. Trust me! In all, Erin's just super. She's easy to talk to, has great stories and I wish I could somehow coerce her to move to Atlanta just so I wouldn't have to hunt for a new stylist. Try her out - she's awesome! read more

Since I've heard and read a lot of wonderful things about Bouffant Daddy, I thought I'd give it a go. Instead of asking for Erin like everyone else, I took just anyone and apparently got the short end of that particular stick. Dale, the stylist, is what I can only call a mean little man. He got all cranky when I wouldn't let him "punk out" my hair. I mean didn't punk die some time ago? And since when is punk work-appropriate for middle aged women, anyway? Sheesh. So here's the kicker: when I wouldn't agree to let him dye my hair a RIDICULOUS shade of orange, he called me a chicken shit. Needless to say, I don't recommend Dale. But my trip to Bouffant Daddy has not been in vain-- at least it's next to KaKao... read more

As a girl with a head full of crazy curls, I have had my share of crappy stylists. Thank goodness I found Bouffant Daddy and Billy Fonner! Billy is knowledgeable, friendly, skilled, funny, quirky, patient - and genuinely loves what he does. He really strives to make sure you leave happy, and I haven't seen him miss that mark yet. Even better - Billy has taught me things about my own hair I didn't know. He has helped me to understand these cuckoo curls and how to work with them to get them looking great. This is in response to Liz G's review, particularly of Erin. Erin has been my stylist since 2005. She knows more about hair then any of the stylists I've know in my lifetime. With every appointment I get a lesson on hair - the coloring process, how to style it a certain way, what will and won't work with my type of hair, etc. She's extremely knowledgeable, focused, pleasant, and expedient. She takes the time during the consultation to ask questions, make suggestions and give thoughtful answers to any questions you may have. There's absolutely nothing awkward about Erin or the way she conducts business. She is a professional, personable and confident, through and through. I have recommended her to many people I know, and they have all remained her customers to this day. While I don't know the details of Liz G's visit with Erin, it's unfortunate that the one time she met with her resulted in a public bashing. What I can attest to is that Erin is a remarkable stylist and human being. I wouldn't trust my hair, or salon-secrets, with anyone else. Curly, straight, short, long - Erin works wonders with any type of hair. Give her a try, you won't be disappointed. If you have curly hair and needs a new stylist call this place NOW! Ask for Erin and she will change your life. Tell her I sent you, she has a referral program. But seriously, that is not the only reason I recommend her. She is super nice, friendly and most of all knows how to cut curly hair. She cuts it dry, then does the washing/styling etc. Plus like the others have said, tons of tips about your hair too. She will trim bangs for free too. I cannot wait to go back and have her color my hair. This place is in historic Maplewood and the only downside is parking. Plan your trips because if Schlafly is having an event you will have to park down the road a piece. Cash or check only or pay the extra 4% to use a debit card. I do NOT have curly hair but I've use this salon several times. Andrea has been my stylist for every appointment. Each time was excellent. She is professional and fun. The entire shop is very welcoming and there is a little cafe on the corner that you can go grab a bite to eat while you are processing. Andrea made sure she cut my hair dry, with the natural curl. Then she washed my hair and showed me how to style it. I sat under the dryer for a bit and then she diffused the rest. She gives me a 10% discount if I keep the appt I made at my last appt, which is great for me, because I am a pretty big flake and often cancel my appts because I just don't feel like doing that tonight, dammit. I should also mention that I have curly hair and a difficult time finding someone that has had special training in curly hair cutting. Gabi has! She's da best, guys. Sir ee us lee. I like unique cuts and colors, and I just go in and let her work her magic. I let her do her artist thing, I don't direct her much, and I always come out with something fabulous! I love the non-stuffy attitude there, the people there are real. If you want a cut like everyone else, and fake people kissing your butt, go somewhere else. When I went on the great search for a new hair salon when I first moved to St Louis, it lead me to Bouffant Daddy. I was told to ask for a certain stylist but since she was out of town I made an appointment with a girl who trained under her. Ms Draven has been my go to girl ever since! I have curly hair and if you have curls too you know the way your hair is cut is critical to having good hair days. Draven took the time to make sure my hair cut was exactly what I wanted and many good hair days have followed! She's amazing! She's also great to color too! Jeff has been cutting my curly hair for almost a year and has done an awesome job. I had almost given up on my search for a stylist who could make my hair look consistently good when I was referred to him by a friend. They also sell Mop Top products there, which are great for a fine texture of curly hair and I have not found anywhere else. He's always on time starting and never makes me sit there waiting. The only reason I did not give this place 5 stars is because the receptionist is not very professional and her interactions with people are pretty awkward. But, my hair looks great so it's worth the whole experience! read more

I am on a continuous search for a great hair stylist in St Louis. Unfortunately, I haven't found them yet. I have wavy/curly hair and Bouffant Daddy's seems to specialize in curly hair. I got a cut and it was meh... Ok. They def spent a good amount of time working on the texture and applying product, but what I was most concerned about--the cut, seemed to be a lesser focus for them. I'm a tough customer when it comes to hair cuts, and the end result wasn't horrible, but I wasn't exactly thrilled with it considering the amount I paid. The cut actually got a lot better after about 1 1/2 months of growth. read more
