The front desk staff member was very friendly, and as a first time visitor, I found the check in process was relatively straightforward (had to complete 2 forms as a Class Pass member). There was, however, the most equipment I had to get for the Sculpt class that I've ever had to get (a resistance band, ankle weights, a mat cover, a towel, and 2 sets of light and medium weights) which took up a lot of space. The class was also totally full on Sunday morning, so the room felt rather cramped. As a taller person, I had to stagger when extending my arms, and the mats were a bit short for me, so part of my body was off the mat, encroaching another row. The exercises were great, and I really liked the class overall, the energy, and the instructor, but the space was too crowded, and it might be nice to simplify the amount of equipment needed or not have to switch so much between putting on/taking off the equipment. read more

These people are jerks. I came as a first time client. They didn't explain everything to me. They are just like mean girls. I've done many cycling classes, but I've never done the one with the shoes. I was not attached to the chair. No one explained that to me then when I asked for help, they just kind of snapped at me so when I said OK fine I'm gonna leave and I tried to get my stuff she literally physically blocked the door and wouldn't let me go get my stuff. What a bunch of rascals. You should make sure everyone is safe and knows what is happening before you start the class. I have done many many classes and many different kinds of gyms in Boston and across the country because I travel a lot and I have never seen such rudeness and expectations that everyone in the room is an expert and no one needs help read more

The Handle Bar is located right next to Whole foods and was formally known as turnstyle. I took a full body cycle and strength class on a weekday morning. The facilities are great with 2 studios (one full bike, one half bike/half strength), plenty of lockers, showers, and changing rooms. I came early to check-in and sign the waivers and was shown the studio. I started on the fit bench side for strength training and there are weights and bands to use depending on the exercises. The instructor was good at cueing what equipment we needed to use and when and broke down what each set would entail. There was also a screen to show which exercises you needed to do and how many reps of each. Halfway through the class we switched and I got help setting up my bike and clipping my shoes in. The seat is quite uncomfortable, but you are hovering over the seat for the majority of the time so it wasn't too bad. I found cycling quite challenging to keep balance and find rhythm to the beat of the music. The cues for cycling were more of suggestions and as long as you were moving you'd be getting a workout. I noticed more experienced people were definitely very into the rhythm and were dancing along to the beat. The instructor was very upbeat and kept everyone motivated to keep going. I preferred the strength workout over cycling and would recommend this class if you're looking for both cardio and weight workout. read more

This yelp is for Matt and Maggie at The Handle Bar South End location. I hate cardio. Kind of always have. I took a class at the suggestion of a friend and I'm so glad I did. As I've gotten older (40 in 9 months but whos counting) I've been more into mobility exercises like barre and yoga. All with higher reps with lighter weights or body weight. Cardio but not really cardio. Long story long, what was working isn't fully addressing my current needs. I needed a shakeup and this foots the bill. I have loved Matt's and Maggie's classes. I love the loud music, and honestly choose my classes based on it and which if these two are teaching. I love how dark it gets in there so I can "recover" at my own pace between songs and I swear no one is looking at me, half the time I'm not sure I can see anything to my left or right...they do play with the lights (as motivation I assume), you're really only up against yourself. These two are so energetic and postive they really have changed my headspace...especially about cardio lol. My literal starting heart rate/zone was red/180+ on average. Not my Apple Watch telling me to calm down haha. My current heart rate/ zone is around orange/160+ on average after 2-3 classes over the last 3 weeks each...which in itself says a lot. And I burn 650-750 active calories which is about 700-850 calories per class. And it delivers the right amount of kumbaya for my taste. Not one for niceties but love a good..."if you're ready to stop you're doing great, stay in there, you can do anything for ...." That kind of kumbaya feels authentic and motivating. Matt and Maggie also have these infectious laughs and little anecdotes that making you stay in it. I love the indirect ways these two instructors curate their classes for what feels personally done for me...half personal introspection and half taking the piss. Like, they feel like friends...but the kind you call at the 13th hour to hide a body, you know, the best kind of friends. It can't be easy making a new playlist and new spin routine every single class. They deserve more than just this yelp review. Music 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 Instructors 6/5 PSA: Because I'm new to the spin world, here's some helpful hints: You can get clip-in bike shoes there for no extra charge, so I walk in with socks and slippers. They give you a towel to wipe away sweat (also kinda nice to throw over your handlebars for extra grip). I like the higher numbered bikes, I can see the instructors better and I feel tucked away just enough. If you're looking to switch it up, spin has been wildly fun and effective. The amenities and class options are above and beyond your traditional spin studio. This location has multiple restrooms, showers, plenty of lockers, and tons of space to get ready if you go up the stairs. Although I have never gotten ready for work here, it seems like it would have everything you need to do so. BTW shoes are complimentary with each class! In addition to the generous locker room space, they have 2 studios. One is strictly for spin and one is for cycle and strength which is hands down my favorite workout class maybe ever. I sign up using ClassPass and love that I am able to select my seat on their app. Half the class is spinning and the other half is strength training, but switch halfway through. There is only one instructor which makes it challenging to pay attention, so I would not recommend if you are a first time spinner. My favorite instructor for this class is Matt M. He has good control over both sides and keeps the class fun. Classes are a bit pricy and can fill up, but I recommend taking one if you are looking for a fusion spin/strength class! read more

I've been coming here since July 2021 & I am an absolute fan! I tried spin for the first time at Turnstyle and from the start I felt very welcome and was given great instruction. Since then I've taken multiple spin classes with different instructors & enjoy each and everyone of them. The classes are very upbeat and incorporate full body movements that I feel I can take it at my own pace. The studio is airy and has locker storage, water refill and showers on the second floor. I visited the Back Bay studio once and have to say I prefer South End's layout as the spin room is framed in a circle which makes it easier to see the instructor. read more

On August 29th, 2022, I took a 5:30 pm class with Britt V at the South End. As I write this, I am still processing what took place in Britt V's studio about an hour ago. At the beginning of the class, I made sure to silence my phone as I had done in lessons prior. I couldn't shut off my phone entirely as I have an autistic brother that might need me. Upon the first song in, my phone (lying face down) was silently lighting up. Britt V begins to scream at me to shut my phone off. She continues to scream at me about how I've ruined the class for others and how I am disrespectful. Due to embarrassment and wanting to burst into tears, I decided to leave the room quietly. As I'm leaving, Britt V continues to berate me, saying, "That's right. Go! You better show me some fucking respect!" I am still in shock as I write this. I've never experienced being berated with the F word in class that I came to better myself in. To top it off, I called the South End location a few minutes ago asking for a manager, and I came to find out she is. Britt V came on the phone and continued to berate me, saying that I deserved my treatment and that she technically did not ask me to leave the class. She would not hear my concerns and would yell over me. I asked her, "Do you think you handled this professionally?" She responded, "I don't know how to act professionally when someone does what you did." Not only was her behavior unprofessional to me, but it was unprofessional to each member taking the class. To hear this from a manager at an establishment that I thought advocated for the mind, body, and spirit is enervating. I am shocked she is in this position she is, athleticism aside. I was excited about being a consistent member of turn style as it is a walkable distance from my work. However, after the evening events, I am confident this is not the right fit for anyone who demands human decency when paying for a class of $25 a clip. I was visiting Boston with some family who love spinning and asked me to come along with them to Turnstyle so I came along. First, I participated in two different sessions, but both were instructed by different people. When you walk in there is a small lobby with a front desk that provides you with spinning shoes as well as earplugs if you need them. I decided to use some, which they kindly allowed me to have. They also have some bottles of water for sale. There is also a small locker room downstairs where you can put you bags or phone while you spin. Turnstyle only has one room designated for spinning as their only other room is dedicated for their boot camp. The spinning room holds around 50 people and the room gets very dark and loud with music during the sessions. I felt that the instructors were both above average, but nothing spectacular. One used a lot of profanity, which I didn't really think was professional. However, they were both really nice and one of the instructors helped me put my shoe back into the pedal when it un-clicked. Also, this Turnstyle is located right next to a Whole Foods do you can get a bite to eat after you finish! Altogether, Turnstyle is a very good place in Boston that provides great spinning classes! read more

Why are there no fans in at room!? It makes the experience really miserable. It honestly feels like your walking into a sweaty ski lodge. After a while, it becomes just hard to breath and I pray someone opens the door. I definitely can't get in a good workout as the stuffiness really starts getting me. I don't understand the hype. How can you throw 50 sweaty people in a room smaller than a classroom with no fans. The AC was at 68 which is high but usually fine for working out but not in a space like that. 68 becomes 80 and humid real quick. I've been twice with the same experience. I won't go back because I honestly just hated every second of it being that uncomfortable. I'm an avid spin person so this really threw me. Oh and someone farted and it literally just stayed in the same place for half the class bc there is no air movement. Blehhhh Also turn off the constant music blaring in the locker rooms the N word. It's so odd... As for instructors: loved one, hated the other so idk what I'm missing that other people seem to love. I also just don't like the classes. Little variety and I find myself spacing out. It'd be nice if they did some tabata style to keep it interesting. You kind of just do something until you notice the instructor not doing it anymore and try and figure out what now, because lord knows you can't hear ANYTHING over the CRACKLING speakers. It's horrible. They are heavy on the body movements which isn't my style. Crazy arm movements. I get it, it's supposed to work the core but with the sweaty handles I just can't get comfortable holding myself up. I do fine in other classes but not this one. Small changing area and if want to shower, leave the class a minute or two early to grab 1 of the 3 showers so you have to wait. I actually dread going to these classes. I live in the burbs and go to a gym there. I sometimes stay after work to get drinks or attend a show so I bought some classes to get a workout in before I meet friends. I have one more class left but I honestly don't find myself using it. But seriously... the N word music has to go. read more

Of all of the spin studios, I choose Turnstyle over all of the other ones in Boston! I frequent here often and been to multiple classes with different instructors. They are all awesome! I like the pace and choreography of the classes. Spinning can get boring if you are just riding a stationary bike for 45 minutes, but the instructors at Turnstyle make it fun! The classes incorporate a lot of core strength and endurance, which is different from most studios. There is also a lot of coordination and "moving with the beat." The classes here are like you are you are going dancing at a club. The instructors are very motivating and encouraging as well. This is definitely a good cardio workout. If you want to burn over 400-500 calories in 1 workout session, then spinning is right for you! I recommend checking this place out. I am so excited for this new spin studio that is walking distance from my apartment! I love Velocity and been to many classes at their Back Bay location so I knew I was going to get a good work out when I signed up for a class here! This location offers spin and bootcamp classes. The facility is new so the lockers and bathrooms are clean and new. Velocity offers free shoe rentals for their classes. The spin studio has around 40-50 bikes and each row of bikes is higher than the one in front so that people in the back of the class can still see the stage and the spin instructor. I also like the Velocity bikes over Flywheel's. I went to the Sunday spin class with Rich and was completely satisfied! It was convenient to sign up through their website and what I like about it is that you can look at the full week schedule and pick and choose the classes you would like to attend by seeing the day, time, and type of music that they will be playing at the class. Rich was a great spin instructor and i liked the music that he played and moves he incorporated. I love spin because it is like a I am at the club. Except instead of dancing the night away, you are spin the morning away. I look forward to joining other classes! read more

Came home for the holidays!! Back to the bean town and back to The Dot. I'm ashamed to say but I'm such a user of all of the products of gentrification. I'm obsessed with the new Harrison Ave. For those reading not REALLY from Boston these neck of the woods were completely different from what you see today. But anyway I digress. I can back home and wanted to get off my lazy, &$: and decided to ask around for a good spinning class. Of course there are the culty and obnoxious one everyone talks about and o decided to skip that bull all together. I've been to another local Boston chain that I like a lot but wanted to try something else/new before going to the oldies but goodies. I went online and registered for their new student deal. At $29 for 3 classes they are basically killing the game because who can turn that down. They even have COMPLIMENTARY shoes. For those who know the other spinning studios that-must-not-be-named you already know this is a bargain. Anyway o have my own shoes cause I'm here for this spinning life but for those who don't complimentary is a must. The website is easy to use and I registered for a Thursday AM class. Walked in 10 minutes before class which a faux pas especially if you're new since that's the time when the staff is busy between classes. But they still took the time to show me around the studio, and ask me if I needed anything. They were sooo kind and unassuming and didn't make me feel like I didn't belong. If you spin enough you will go to studios where people are annoyed if you're not a pro. Which is Effing annoying and makes me never return! Got into the actual studio which was sexy and designed in a U shaped way which means there enough back seats for the bad rhythm spinners like myself! PERRI(sp?) was the instructor and she cane right over to my bike to help me set up. She was again kind, humble and made me feel like one of the crew. Now onto the class: IT WAS AMAZING. Her energy was incredible, the music kept thumping, the room was the DARKEST I've experienced which was amazing for privacy and for getting you in your own zone! The arm workout was killer but enjoyable. They have lockers and cubbies in large quantity so no one has to compromise and the showers are clean, well arranged and have complimentary shampoo/conditioner and shower gel. Towels are abundant, clean and yes I check:they also smell good! Guys GO TO TURNSTYLE. Become a member. And when I move back to Boston I'll be the annoying culty regular I love to hate. Right before COVID, I purchased a 5-pack. I was able to go to 2 classes, but still had my other classes left. When the studio reopened, I was so excited to return to spinning and use the rest of my classes. I was told packs cant be used towards these classes and would have to wait until phase 4. I told them I am moving and will most likely be gone by phase 4, can I please use them now? Nope! I was told I could trade in my entire pack for ONE class. I begged again but was denied. I have been coming to Turnstyle for about a year or so now. I started at the Charlestown location, which is by far my favorite one. The South End location is the largest and has the most classes offered. Turnstyle is one of the most affordable spin studios I have found, and the quality of the classes is really good, especially considering the price. Their monthly rates are low ($119 for 12 rides a month or $69 for 6). They also frequently do promotions and sell packs of 10 classes for around $130. I've tried Soul Cycle, Cyclebar, Handlebar, and some other smaller studios and the classes at Turnstyle are just as good if not better. Those studios are more than double in price in most cases, which is why I cannot justify going to another studio. I don't have one particular instructor that I go to consistently, but I haven't really found any that I don't like! They are all pretty fantastic. I also like that the classes are mostly structured the same -- doing a few sprints, a good climb, and an arm workout. I've really liked the fitness results I've gotten from going to these classes and I can tell my endurance has improved a ton. Why not 5 stars? The one thing I would change about Turnstyle is the level of cleanliness. This is definitely where I can see that I am getting what I pay for. I loved the Charlestown location because I found it to be clean. Since trying the other studios, I have found the bathrooms and other facilities to be in need of a good deep clean. The bikes at the other studios (particularly Back Bay and South End) are also older and in need of some replacement/repairs. The bikes in general aren't as "nice" as the ones at Soul Cycle or Handlebar. But again, it's half the price, so I'm willing to put up with it. read more

I used to be a spin instructor so I really love spin classes and am sometimes critical of the teachers. BUT I've been to Turnstyle a bunch of times and love the vibe, energy, and all the instructors. It's one of the best 45 minute workouts you'll find. I always come out dripping sweat and feeling really good about how the class pushed me. Recently went to a class taught by Heather and I thought she was unbelievable. I don't remember the last time I sweat that much. The ONLY downside is it's a little pricey. I love spin classes and travel to Boston for business every month. I was looking forward to trying Turnstyle but was very disappointed by the quality of the bikes as well as the instruction. If you're looking for an opportunity to just jam out and go at your own pace this would work for you. However, if you're looking to get the best workout possible with guided instructions for interval and endurance training, look elsewhere. The bikes do not have any RPM measurement and do not even track mileage in combination with an instructor who is focused only on the music and not telling us to slow down, increase power, speed up for x amount of time, I felt like this class was a waste of money. Ok, I hate spin classes. I've done Flywheel, SoulCycle, and a few other studios, BUT I love Turnstyle. I think I've been officially converted. I took a class w/ Britt V. (um, Drake, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z as the playlist? SIGN ME UP), and she's just the right amount of "I'm going to make you sweat like crazy and you're going to LIKE IT" drill-master and "Challenge yourself"inspo queen. I don't think I remember the last time I challenged myself physically so much in 45 minutes, but it was an incredible class with the best ever soundtrack. My muscles will be crying tomorrow, but for good reason :) Please take note that I am the crankiest, worst morning person in the universe, and I remember thinking, "Ok, I could wake up at the crack of dawn for this..." I love cycling classes, and at this point I have done a whole bunch, so here is the rundown. The classes I have taken are what you make of them, if you put in the work you will sweat. Unlike some other classes I have been to, where I have felt forced to get an intense workout, I felt that the teachers have been less motivating and there is less energy in the classes. Maybe it is the slightly techno music, or maybe it is just the fellow students but I felt like I needed to self-motivate a little. Not always a bad thing. Seems good for all levels or people who are scared of the super-sonic-cyclers at Soul (i don't blame you, they're scary). Love how the studio is set up--the cycling space is really good. You get to choose your own bike, so get there on the early side if you have a strong preference on where you sit in the room. None of the classes I have been to are super full, which I kind of like. Upstairs they have nice showers and lockers. Feels comfortable, not too competitive of a line for the showers. They have hair dryers, towels, shoes, deodorant, and hairspray up for grabs. The perfect spot to go before work or class for me. Love that set up . Maybe I am just paranoid because it is flu season in Boston, but this studio could use a little cleaning up. From the clutter in the front windows to the slimy feeling bikes to the teacher who was actually sick, I just got the feeling that this place needs a full deep clean. I will go back, it is on ClassPass, convenient location and a good sweat. A solid 3.5 for me! read more

Quick and easy check-in where you also get shoes. Love how you don't have to bring your own lock too. My first time here there was someone who helped me get settled in with the bike hike and the shoes locked into the peddles. I walked into the cycle room thinking it was dark. Boy was I wrong because it got darker. I really enjoyed that part because it lets you focus on your cycling. The music is great. I love how you get to choose your sessions and know what music will be played. It can get a little chaotic in between classes but it works out in the end. My only gripe is it seems like the handlebars don't get wiped down which is why there loads of purrell everywhere. This location is pretty small but gets the job done. She consistently makes people that are not as experienced feel bad, wouldn't let someone come back in the room after getting some air, and has an overall terrible attitude. As an avid runner, I tend to put on my head phones, strap on my shoes and go on long solo runs while tuning out the rest of the world. After doing this for so long I realized the need to get my rass kicked even harder by someone who is more intense than I am! Then I discovered Turnstyle and now I am a total Turnstyle-Junkie!!! The energy at Turnstyle is unlike that at any other fitness studio in the city. The neon lights and loud music help you get in the zone when you're on the bike. This review mostly pertains to the Bootcamp classes. The bootcamp classes at Turnstyle leave me feeling absolutely miserable, but at the same time strong and powerful!!! After my first Full Body bootcamp class with Erin I became instantly hooked. Even though my muscles were still sore (I could barely walk for the next two-three days), I signed up for an Arms, Abs, and Cardio with Heather, and man did I get my butt kicked even harder!!!! I never thought I would be breathing and sweating so hard lifting weights, but I was drenched with sweat by the end of the class. I got such a great workout that I'm even having a difficult time typing this review up because my arms are still shaking!!! All the instructors are super cool and fun and they don't make fun of you or make you feel embarassed if you look like an idiot. One thing to note though, is that the bootcamp studio tends to be a little small, especially during peak hours. Make sure you get there early to get a good spot and bring lots of water! read more

I found the unprofessionalism of the staff to be quite alarming. It was disheartening to witness a fellow cycler be reprimanded at the end of a class for no apparent reason. I will preface this review and say, I have only done one class and haven't tried the other instructors butttttt the studio itself doesn't really shine a light to B/Spoke or SoulCycle, the bikes feel older and less updated. The instructor sounded pretty muffled and I couldn't really hear what he had wanted us to do. Not the fanciest place, but the staff are always helpful and friendly, and I've been a regular for over two years now. The instructors are awesome and the atmosphere in the spin studio is inclusive but not overbearing. They also have a broad range of times you can take classes at, so it works with every schedule. Even brought my mother with me when she visited for a month, and she got completely hooked. A great workout to get your endorphins going the rest of the day. I'm obsessed with Turnstyle. I was an occasional velocity rider before the merge and with a new studio in my back yard at Ink Block I'm officially on-board. I've ridden at a bunch of the spin studios in the area and there's no question that Turnstyle has them all beat. I LOVE this studio. The spin classes are so much fun, have such good energy, and are an awesome workout. Every instructor I have had is great. As someone who was a die hard Flywheel fan and loved the competitive part of their classes, I didn't think I'd love a class so much that had no numbers/score board, but this is my new favorite place to spin. I figured writing about Turnstyle at the South End location (woot! a five minute walk from my apartment!!) would be the most helpful considering its new but I have ridden at all the locations (including the Backbay location formally known as Velo-city). And I LOVE it! No, its no SoulCycle but its tons of fun, the instructors are great, and I always leave happy regardless of how crappy my day was. I discovered this place via ClassPass and it does not disappoint. Check-in is super easy and they give you shoes to use. I have considered buying my own because I spin a lot now but its good to know theres a pair for you. You can pick any bike you want so if you're not a front-row rider, hop on one in the back. Classes are a solid 45 mins with an arm song (also my cue to know that theres 2 more songs left in class lol). There is an optional cool-down at the end which I try my hardest to stay for unless I'm running late to something else. Some of my fave instructors include Britt, Deepak, Amanda, & Manuel (I've only ridden with the last two at Kendal). But honestly, I think you're gonna get a GREAT, sweaty, and happy workout regardless of which instructor you get. Def check it out!!! read more

My favorite place to take a spin class in Boston. I started going here when it was Velo-city and followed them to Turnstyle. I have taken classes at all the various places in Boston (Flywheel, Handle Bar, Rev'd, Cyc, Recycle) this is by far the most welcoming and most accomidating studio around. If you can't do the choreography they don't shame you or force you to do anything you can't. I came here when I was injured and couldn't run. I had to sit the entire ride just working on strength. I let the instructors know ahead of time and each one would tell me it's not a big deal and give me modifications for what to do. I have nothing but love for this studio. read more

I mainly come here for Boot camp but the few cycling classes I've done have been great ! Would highly recommend for anyone wanting a full body, sweaty workout. The bootcamp studio can get pretty crowded but never had not enough space. Lots of equipment and each instructor has their own style but all of them keep you motivated. The unlimited monthly subscription is worth the price if you go enough days during the week. And their online system to register for classes is so great and convenient and A+ staff. read more

As a newbie to spinning, i was really nervous to go to a studio and look like a foo because I didn't know what I was doing. Let me say that about 3 weeks in and 8 or 9 classes later, I am addicted to Turnstyle (all 3 locations). The staff and other riders are super welcoming and always ready to help when needed. I love the concept of themed classes and have yet to attend a class that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. So far I have attended classes with quite a few of the instructors but really enjoyed riding with Hua, Tom, Dr. Deepak and Emily and although they were all different, they have all been great. I am am a member of ClassPass but I bought a wonderfully priced 10 class pack to supplement in case I hit my 3 class studio limit per cycle (although you can book 3 classes at EACH Turnstyle location so it is really 9 classes per cycle). I recommend this family of studios to any and everyone! Newbie or pro, super-fit or a work in progress. Great music, great instructors, great atmosphere....you can't ask for anything more! read more
