HOMEOWNERS BE AWARE! DO NOT PAY FOR THE ITEMIZED BID!!…read more We hired Nathan Casey to do an itemzied bid for our home remodel project. He charges people $3,000 to give a detailed bid for projects. Our experience led us to the conclusion that Nathan was more interested in charging us for an estimate and that he ultimately had little intention of taking the job (unless we bit on his extremely and surprising "final bid"). We'll explain why. First he gives you a ballpark number. At the time we already had all of our architect and structural drawings that he reviewed. And he had come to the house a couple of times. His delivered an estimate that ranged from $500K - $800K, without any details about what drove that range. Knowing what we know now, that should have been the first red flag. Someone with his background and experience should never had given that large of a range as all plans were done, and most of the major materials were chosen. Yet, we hired him to do an itemized specific estiamate, for $3000, so that we could seriously consider him for the project. After agreeing to pay the fee and hiring him, he missed deadline after deadline of providing us a final bid we could consider - which jeopardized our ability to commit to the contractor we ultimately selected while we waited. He told us that his estimate would take 4-6 weeks and we didn't have a final number until over 8 weeks. He kept forgetting specific information that was given to him, like what materials were being used where. He also kept misunderstanding the structural drawings and insisting that the information needed validating (which it did not, we are using the same structural now for the job and they are correct). Also, as an interesting corroborating side note: his final bid never involved his stated intention to inspect our attic and crawlspace/foundation to ensure accuracy. Is that evidence that his "final" bid wasn't in good faith, accurate, or best practice... given the substantial work to our foundation and roof in this project? As we communicated to him in person, the fact that he gave us an "original range" in writing of $500k-$800k for our project (which included full architectural, engineering, electrical, and most all design plans)... but he still required $3000 for an "accurate bid"... only to then deliver a final bid at $830k without any project scope change... was revealing. When we asked him point blank: "under what circumstances was this project ever possible to be $500k"... he provided no answer. Interestingly enough, after many delays and us pinging him on delivering his final estimate over the 8 weeks we engaged, when it came to collecting his $3000 bid fee Nathan then frequently emailed and texted us, and was very focused and communicative around collecting.

Be careful if you work with Dennis Freeman for cabinetry of any sort. Dennis Freeman used to own…read moreCascade Cabinets and I was unfortunate enough to waste $20K on kitchen cabinets through him. I was doing a complete kitchen remodel and my general contractor pushed me into using Dennis Freeman. I am now saving money to have his terrible work, which is peeling like crazy, refaced or repainted. During planning, I asked Dennis if there was a downside to paint-grade cabinets vs. stain-grade, and he said there was none: they were equally durable. I opted for paint-grade because of the color scheme I wanted, and his cabinets began to peel within two months. When I first noticed it, I was $40K poorer for my new kitchen, and I was HEARTBROKEN. I had worked so hard to save that money. I hoped the peeling wouldn't get much worse, but during the first year of my brand-new kitchen, the peeling continued. The project was more than a year finished when I finally contacted Dennis about the terrible quality of his cabinets. I was relieved that he agreed to come and fix the peeling ones. But he never came, despite *many* phone calls, and I understood after some time that he never planned to. I wrote a strongly worded negative Yelp review about Cascade Cabinets (this business of his has since closed). This also didn't mobilize him, but at least I hoped to help others avoid my mistake. I finally had to contact the general contractor who had managed the project, and he persuaded Dennis Freeman to correct his work. Dennis showed up and told me that I had to expect this sort of result from paint-grade cabinets (hello? 1. Where was this information when I first asked? and 2. I know people with excellent and durable paint-grade cabinets in their kitchens!). He also blamed the peeling on the cabinets being near the sink/moisture (hello again? 1. This is a kitchen, he knew that from the start, and 2. With time, even the cabinets farthest from any water source have started to peel). He advised me on how to care for them, but I had already been following his instructions to only wipe them with a damp cloth all along. Anyway, he took the worst and most peeled doors down and went away with them; returned with them "fixed" and they promptly resumed peeling within a month. He then asked me to take down my Yelp review since he had corrected his work, and I deleted it reluctantly, because what I wrote was still true. When the replacements started to peel, I had no energy left to fight anymore; it had been such a struggle just to get these sad corrections done. This project was in 2011; it was 2012 when he fixed some of the worst cabinet doors. It is now 2019 and the cabinets look like hot garbage. Huge flakes are coming off them. I am afraid to clean them because I don't want to contribute to the peeling. I worked so hard to save up for that kitchen remodel, and this just makes me want to cry. It wasn't right for me to remove that Yelp review, and now that I am going to be spending money to repaint/reface his cabinets, I have to warn anyone else who might be considering using his services. To be clear: I don't know anything about Elevate Design Build; his other partners in this venture may be quite competent and ethical--I have no idea. All I can say is BE CAREFUL ABOUT CABINETS with this company, ask who's doing them, and get some kind of serious warranty that spells out your durability expectations.

We were extremely pleased with the workmanship of the cabinets. He and Justin were very easy to work with and had many great ideas in our process. Small details like creating a spice drawer under our cooktop is an example of the extra touch that makes the kitchen complete. We especially love our soft close cabinets and brand new drawers. His painters and cabinet workers were on time, courteous and always cleaned up after the days work. The finish product exceeding our expectations. Dave and his crew, shout out to Angel, remodeled our 1966 bathroom with custom made cabinets, new wall texture, new paint and new tile, sinks, fixtures... everything! It looks beautiful. We, believe it or not, enjoyed having the guys here working for a few months. Angel was our main worker and what a professional! He truly knows how to do everything and does it well! After the bathroom was finished, they tore out the tile in our entry way and replaced it with hardwood floors. Then they took out ( ripped out/demolished) our flagstone fireplace surround and replaced that with a marble surround. They did a great job on everything and brought us into the 21st century! Sam can really get down into the details of measurements and considerations in the design, architecture and installation with you. We felt comfortable that we and our home were in solid, reliable, hands the entire time. Any marble installation is too important and costly to take shortcuts.
