We asked in the hardware store in Eastport where to get a good meal. The Happy Crab and its Seafood Chowder came highly recommended. The bowl of Chowder was plenty for both of us. We also ordered onion rings to start. It is Friday, so I got the haddock fish fry. The fillet was huge. Hubby ordered a bacon chicken wrap. It, too, was delicious. I also ordered a Bloody Mary. LOL. Arrived at 7:30, and stood waiting. Finally my husband walked to the bar and asked if there was a hostess. The guy said to seat ourselves. Sat at a dirty booth and waited, and waited some more. Server came over & said she'd bring menus. I had to point out that the table needed to be cleaned. On the menu almost every seafood item was marked "market price" We decided to split a bowl of clam chowder, fish and chips and steamed mussels. Server came back to tell us the clam chowder would cost $22 instead of the $17 on the menu. She assured us it was worth it as it would be loaded. We decided to give it a try. And then we waited & waited. At 8:15 our chowder was served. It was indeed loaded....with mostly potatoes. I encountered 4 pieces of clam. My husband didn't count but said he too found very few clam pieces This was not a $22 bowl of chowder! The fish & chips & mussels arrived. A small piece of haddock on some sad fries was ok. Not great, but ok. We uncovered the bowl of mussels to find they were stone cold. We sent them back & turned down the offer to make a new order. The check for just the chowder and haddock was $47. Had they been wonderful, I would not have cared, but they were just ok. We will not bother going back. read more

Our cruise stopped at Eastport, Maine and we came searching for a lobster meal. Happy Crab's menu keeps popping up on my search but lobster was not on the menu. Upon arrival, we inquired inside and voila! They've made a special lobster combo. For $50/whole lobster, it comes with a roll and a corn. Add $25 for another whole lobster. Dessert included too. It took us 3 hours from lining up to finish! Long three hours but it's very well worth the wait. Lobsters were very fresh, butter isn't necessary. Juices poured out as soon as we cracked the lobster open. Shania and the manager were very friendly making our long wait worthwhile. The restaurant isn't big and doesn't have much seating, not enough for passengers of a cruise ship. On normal days, they don't serve lobsters and serving this small town should be enough. read more

As we were at our camp in Calais, ME the wife and I took a road trip to Eastport and Lubec to look at lighthouses and coastal shops and we stumbled upon this little restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised by the service, the food and the ambiance. I dove into a Rueben sandwich and my wife got a super fresh haddock sandwich as we sat out on the deck on a beautifully sunny day. It was very crowded at the bar and on the deck but that didn't hinder the speedy service and friendly faces helping. The blueberry pie was delicious and the prices are very affordable even seeing the lobster roll on the menu at an affordable price. If you are looking for a place to grab a bite in the center of Eastport, try this place out, I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

Booths in front, and a bar with high tops in back with a great view down Water St. Staff was different on Fri and Sat nights, but both very welcoming, even though it was quite busy. Had a drink and fried clams one night at the bar. Which were excellent and LOTS to eat. Second time seafood chowder at a high tops. Chowder was overflowing the bowl, absolutely full of seafood and fantastic! When I mentioned on night 2 that I hoped they had blueberry pie, the woman taking my order said she wasn't sure they had vanilla ice cream to top it off. Turns out she had her husband/bartender run out and get it. Going the extra mile, on a busy night, for a stranger was just over the top! Can't recommend the food, staff or view enough. I cannot say enough good things about this place, especially the seafood bisque! I thought it was crazy to pay so much for the seafood bisque, but it was fantastic. I opted for the cup rather than the bowl to save five dollars, and frankly I wish I had gotten the bowl. I actually drove for two hours from Bangor (and back the same night) just to come out here and try this. I STILL thought it was well worth it. Because this was an out of the way treat for myself, I also got the lobster roll with onion rings. I know my cholesterol must still be in recovery, but MAN was this yummy. The service was really great as well. I asked for honest suggestions for the best things, knowing I would be be back soon - or easily. We all recognize the bars where people hang their dollars on the wall and this is one. It has a laid back fun atmosphere and beer is the beverage of choice. Staff were friendly. We arrived at 5:30pm on a Friday. There were a number of open tables. We ordered dinner when our waitress came to take our drink order. It was then a full 1.5 hours (90 minutes) before our food arrived. Our waitress was only seen once in that time. After our food finally arrived, so did the excuses ('our system went down and people couldn't check out', 'it happened 40 minutes after you ordered'). The food was at least warm. It was average (fish and chips, hamburger). Be aware that there is a 75 cent up-charge for putting 1 pickle slice on your burger. It is written on the menu but I did expect more than one small slice for that price. There does seem to be a management issue at this restaurant. If they cared about their customers they would handle things very differently. read more

We were very hungry when we arrived at the Happy Crab. A waitress saw us and told us to sit anywhere. We opted for outside on the deck as the weather was beautiful and we could see the ocean. However, a dog owner with their dog was also there, and the dog started barking at us. My husband also noticed the dog has peed on our table leg and floor prior to us sitting down, so we got up and moved to another table. As we waited for the waitress to return with our menus, a family of five was seated across from us, and was given menus. Mind you, they came in after us. At least 10 minutes went by before we had menus given to us. Finally our waitress came and gave us menus and brought water. We chose steamed muscles, seafood chowder and blueberry pie. However, our waitress was no where to be found. The family of five had already ordered their food. We waited another 20 minutes at least, before our waitress returned to take our order. So we gave her our order and she left. We came in hungry, and now, we are really hungry. We waited another 20 min, and no sign of our waitress. The family of five had their food and were eating. Our waitress shows and says she's sorry, they don't have muscles today. We have been there 50 minutes, and didn't even have bread given to us! Now I'm hangry! We asked if she could at least bring us the soup. She's gone for another 15 minutes and brings the soup and pie at the same time. If you come here, be ready to wait if you get the old waitress with the smokers raspy voice! At least the chowder and pie were very good! Oh, one other thing. The price on the menu is not what they charge on the bill. The menus are not updated, so you'll pay more. I may go again, but would ask for a different waitress. read more

Wife had the burger, I had bbq chicken pizza. She enjoyed the burger, she asked for medium well and it came out exactly that way. My pizza came out good, but i fear the cheese may have been possibly mixed with american or something else. It just had a slightly off taste and i think it was something to do with the cheese. (I cant stand any cheese except mozzarella) i didnt bother asking the waitress (who was extremely great to us) if there was some kind of other cheese cause it probably would have ruined it for me after already eating it lol. NOT WORTH THE (LOOOOOONG) WAIT TRAVEL ADVISORY: Do not patronize this establishment until they get their act together. My partner and I went to this place recently and ordered a wrap and a burger. We waited well over an hour for our meal (meanwhile there were several empty tables so it wasn't like the place was packed and the staff was slammed). At one point my partner inquired about the status of our meal, saying we were hungry; the waitress gave us a couple of packets of oyster crackers(??). Our waitress also waited a looooooong time before giving us our free drink refills (we drank our first round while waiting for the food to arrive). She was not cheerful at all and didn't check on our table. We almost walked out while waiting, but we decided to stay bc we were hungry for some dinner. When the food finally came the wrap and the fries were fine, but the burger bun was cold and not buttered or toasted. Meh. While waiting my partner looked to the kitchen and noticed the cook had a long beard that was uncovered. Neither was his hair. Ew. "I can't watch," she said. But wait. There's more. During the middle of the night I awoke w chills and a raging migraine headache. Several hours passed and I started coughing. Now I'm testing for Covid. I'm not saying they gave me Covid, but we hadn't put ourselves in any other situation that would have led us to get sick other than our dinner at the Crappy Crab. My partner and I spent 48 hours in Eastport and liked Happy Crab so much that we went back twice! On our first night, we went to The Happy Crab, honestly because it was the only restaurant option that was open but we're so glad we did! The restaurant and bar has a super fun and upbeat vibe with dollar bills stapled all over the walls. My favorite part of the night was when a country song came on the radio and a group of old men sitting at the bar started signing along at full volume. We ordered a Philly Cheesesteak and fries and my husband. Who used to live in Philly even said that the sandwich was bomb, it was delicious! The next day we came back for drinks and snacks and again, had a great experience. We met the owner at a bar before going to Happy Crab and they were super friendly. I love this spot! read more

I'd say we got lucky because we got seats without a wait but the food did take a long time. Be ready for mostly fried options on the menu. I bet there's a decent view when it's not rainy out. This was a nice surprise. Service was excellent and the place was clean and comfortable with indoor and outdoor seating options. The lobster roll was very good. I wasn't really expecting that from a place that doesn't bill itself as a lobster shack. It was better than most lobster shacks, actually and should rank high in my upcoming review of lobster rolls in Maine. The mussels were excellent as well. They didn't have the most wide-ranging beer menu but I was able to find something to help pass the time. There's a full bar and wine options as well. This is a festive port side restaurant in Eastport. The restaurant features dollar bills hanging from the ceilings and walls. While not unique, it is impressive just how many the restaurant has on display. There is a lot of fried food, so if that is your taste you will likely enjoy this venue. All of the food we've had here is very good! Price point is average to other bar/grill type restaurants. Drinks are good. Sometimes it can be a little loud back at the bar area but they've quieter seating up front if you prefer . Facilities are clean . There's usually not a long wait for servers . My only wish is that they had baked food selections . People with health concerns that don't eat a lot of fried foods/bread are limited . This wasn't about the kitchen being backed up, this wasn't about the servers having too much to do. It's a beautiful spot in Eastport right on the water. Due to COVID-19 there are restrictions and I for one appreciate that. Masks are required, the menu is paper, the silverware and cups are all plastic. Does that make a dining experience better? Well it does to me in this strange and scary world we are living in. That's why I gave them a 5 star rating. They are doing it right and for all the right reasons. Now to the food, my husband spotted a teen across from our table ( actually we were inside and she was with her family on the patio). He said to me," I might order the lobster roll." We usually purchase our own lobsters and make what we thought were gigantic lobster rolls.. This place put mine to shame. There must have been at least two lobsters stuffed into top split toasted roll. My husband actually said to me that he'd wished some mayo on the side. Who ever says that? We ate here 2 times during our stay in Eastport. The food was fresh and had decent portion sizes. The service can be a bit scattered since it's sort of a first come, first grab a table kind of place. The first night we were greeted by one server and then totally ignored for quite a while. We finally asked another server to ask ours to return. Which she did and we ordered the awesome seafood chowder, truly awesome and the Philly cheesesteak which was flavorful but stingy on the meat/veggie/cheese quantity. Night two we had the haddock platter and the steamed mussels and a Caesar salad. The Caesar was fine but could have had a smidge more dressing a whole lot more anchovy flavor. The haddock portion was acceptable but smaller than we had on a fish sandwich the day before at another location. The mussels were totally forgettable. The sauce was pretty flavorless and both dipping butter options fell flat. However, they have a great mustard from the local mustard store that we put a smidge of it on a mussel and then dipped in butter they were a lot better. Since this is really the only go-to restaurant in town, I'm sure my review won't influence anyone not to go there but hopefully it helps you make informed menu choices. read more

Holy wow, what a long wait for our food. About an hour and a half, to be precise, for basic pub food. While the prices are reasonable and the food was decent, the wait was not given that people who arrived after us, at least two other tables, got their food before us, our drinks were never refilled, and the reasons given for the delay made no sense. One in particular was that one of the two of us ordered a burger and burgers take longer to cook. What? Here's the deal, in this day and age, I get that it's extremely tough on restaurants to have enough staffing, especially in summer when things are more busy. But restaurants in this situation should be upfront with their customers by letting know the wait will be long, refill their drinks and offer some bread or chips. Don't just leave them sitting for an hour and a half wondering whether they'll ever get a meal, or should just go elsewhere. read more

We have always loved the Happy Crab. Something changed. The Lobster roll used to be huge, now undersized and certainly not the same. $28 for a skimpy Lobster roll out of Season? Lobster is $8 a pound in Hanniford. Didn't even come with fries or chips. The Ruben my Daughter ordered, was $15, one thin piece of meat on thick bread. $18 if you wanted Fries with it. Disappointed.
