Food and drinks were FANTASTIC! I don't have enough good things to say. Good prices and HUGE portions. Fries were very crispy (sweet potato and regular), and the CBR (special) was so tasty. I will definitely be coming back to this place! The food is outstanding, great atmosphere and the staff is really nice! This place actually gives you these hand cut chips when your seated which so many places don't do that. I had the best beer bartered fish and chips and wow! It was so tasty! The batter was perfect! My husband and I met up with some old friends and enjoyed a meal here. We were worried that it would be slammed, since it was a long holiday weekend but thankfully we didn't have to wait for a table. We ordered the "Not your Average Sprouts" which were a bit sweet for my liking but were well cooked and enjoyed by the rest of the table. Two of our party had the Guinness Stew and both thought it was great. I had the fish and chips and it was all very good. I would definitely try this place again next time I'm in town. read more

I woke up Sunday morning knowing my favorite Irish restaurant in Connecticut. On Sunday night, I'll go to bed with a different one - The Hare and the Hound in Putnam. The Hare and the Hound (H&H), while conceived before, opened during the Pandemic. I've had H&H bookmarked in Yelp, but this is my first visit. There's one thing that absolutely stinks about H&H. It's an hour from my house. Otherwise, The Hare and the Hound checks-- neigh, power-stamps -- all of the boxes for an outstanding Irish Pub. Setting-wise, H&H is a terrifically updated take on an Irish Pub. Dark woods. Marble. Marigold walls. Glass dividers with etchings of a hound chasing, get this -- a hare! There's cool skate deck wall art that somehow works. The ceiling trim has dark wood, AND green neon. The music playing is decidedly Irish, but it's fresh and different than the usual tunes you hear at pubs. In front of H&H, Guinness umbrella tables sit in a brick-encased patio. H&H has a fantastic environment for eating, drinking and socializing. We all can agree that a great Irish pub needs friendly bartenders. I regret that I didn't catch her name, but the bartender who helped me was outstanding. She was outgoing, efficient, hard-working and informative. She recommended Back East Gelato Girl, but first insisted I try a sample, and she polled me about what it reminds me of. "Rainbow Sherbet," I said - meaning that in a good way. I ordered a full pint! Top notch service. I saw similar efforts from other H&H employees. With Yelp's Nachovember Top 12 CT Places for Nachos on the horizon, I had to try H&H's "Irish Nachos". Yelp is looking for "amazing and unique" nachos "across Connecticut". Hey Yelp - you got somebody from the Northeast corner of Connecticut? No. Now you do! The Hare and the Hound! The base is satisfying, crispy, Bent Arm Ale battered "corkscrew" fried potatoes. It doesn't get much more unique. The co-stars of the show, (1) a rich, decadent, perfectly dense, craft ale cheese sauce, (2) shaved, knockin' it out of the park pastrami, and (3) chopped green onions. I can't remember ever eating better cheese ale sauce, and frankly, it's a bit of a weak spot for me. I don't know for sure that the pastrami is house made, but if not, it fooled me because it was great, with its good chewy texture and understated seasoning. The green onions dotted the nachos with contrasting flavors and crunchy texture. I also noticed a slow growing spiciness as I continued to eat. This dish leaves me no choice. H&H's "Irish Nachos", I nominate you for consideration for the Yelp Top 12 Best CT Places for Nachos! For my main course, I ordered the Irish pub classic Fish and . . .Brussel Sprouts? Yeah, I know. I subbed a very generous portion of delicious apple, bacon and fig jam brussel sprouts for the "chips" since I had corkscrew fries for an app. I have no regrets. I feel like I'm giving a lot of accolades for one review, but H&H's beer-battered cod is my favorite pub style fish in CT. I know no close second. The chef fresh beer-battered the cod. How do I know? I literally saw him walk to the bar taps and fill a plastic container with fresh beer. Wow! The serving size was huge. There were two thick, wide and long pieces of battered cod. The golden brown batter looked glorious, and it was just the right type of crunchy and thick. The cod was shiny white, moist and very thick. The cod was so thick, that it held its own with the great, crunchy beer batter. H&H's menu was filled with great classic and newer options. Corned beef dinner. Shepherds pie. A Potato "Flight". Burgers. Brunch Chicken and Waffles. Guinness Stew with short ribs, chuck and root vegetables. Emerald Goddess Salad. Pastrami-seasoned salmon. Mussels. Maguires Wellington. These items are just the tip. I can't get to Putnam as often as I would like. But I'll be volunteering for every family errand near there, if it gets me back to The Hare and the Hound. I wouldn't normally write a review of a place until I've been there a few times, but our one visit was such that we won't return any time soon. We were there for an early dinner. Our server was very sweet, but not very present. We waited for a while after a hostess sat us outside as the server chatted at length with friends of hers who were seated at a nearby table. We waited and waited for menus far too long. I finally stood up to get them myself, but then she stepped away from her friends and got them, so I sat down. We were seated outside with the occasional loud motorcycle rumbling by, and while three of the four people at another table were 'sneaking' vape sips off and on during their meal. They'd covertly do it when the waitstaff wasn't there, but with no regard to fellow diners - something staff can't control, I realize. Once we ordered, our wait for the food was a bit long, but not unreasonable. My salad was good, but the lettuce was unwashed (still had the soil it grew in on some leaves). The other dish, bangers and mash, was at least 60% Brussels sprouts that were sauteed to a green-grey tinge, 20% good mashed potatoes, and two small sausages. The music was a mix if what I'd call loud Irish grunge (?) and also classic Irish pub music - I prefer the latter. Our server was slow to refill drinks. She was very nice, but must have been distracted or too busy to check on us, or perhaps new at this. FWIW, a couple at the table next to us (whose food came out before ours even though they arrived well after us - but perhaps their food was easier to make), commented to each other that they liked their food. I came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with some friends to try out the new spot. There was plenty of parking in the lots right outside and in the back, so finding a spot wasn't an issue. The outside's really classy looking with an interesting sign and a real Irish pub feel. We were seated and immediately greeted by a server who told us the specials and explained the new restaurant. He even brought out some house made salt and vinegar chips for us to try! The food options were very cool and had a nice twist on traditional Irish food. I'd highly recommend the guiness beef stew and brussels with apples and bacon. The portions were also large and pretty filling due to hearty ingredients. The inside was fun with a big hand drawn mural on the wall of a hare and hound boxing. Overall a cool spot, good food, and great people. Definitely stop in! read more

A lot of crisp fall and cold winter days, I crave a bowl of hearty homemade soup. While home cooked soup is always nice, it's an endeavor when I'm looking for something quick in a pinch. Most restaurants offer the expected variety of soups, tomato, French onion, clam chowder, chili, cheddar broccoli, but I'm looking for something brothy with vegetables, something that tastes so home-cooked you could have sworn someone's grandma made it. I was delighted to find such a soup here last week. Their special was a cabbage and corned beef soup. There were perfectly soft and well cooked chunks of potato that melted in your mouth, carrots and celery, and just enough finely shredded cabbage to cover every spoonful of delicious homemade broth. My favorite part was the small pieces of corned beef hidden throughout the soup that would surprise you in every mouthful. The complimentary chips that they offer on the side were a perfect pairing and I was very satisfied for $11. I'm excited to try more of their dishes; the cabbage and corned beef and shepherds pie in particular, and visit for brunch sometime, to try the amazing looking poutine I saw served nearby. read more

We came here with some friends and while I'm willing to give them another chance, our first visit was mediocre. We were happy with our cocktails and our waitress was very nice. We were pretty happy with our appetizers, the flight of spuds was pretty great, I've never seen a bigger tater tot, nor one that held together so well with cheese and bacon in it, it's almost too bad you can't order these by themselves. The Irish nachos were also really delicious, and the first time I've had that combination of potato, pastrami, and cheese (two thumbs up for the beer cheese, it's amazing how many places just can't get the right). Dinner was a bit of a different story. Two of us ordered the Guinness Beef stew, and while I thought the flavor was there (the other person wasn't quite as pleased) we both agreed "Where's the Beef?" (yes to totally steal the phrase), was the question of the night, it needed the meat and it wasn't there. The short rib special over gorgonzola risotto was well received, and the country style mac-n-cheese was tasty if the cheese sauce was a little runny. This place looks like a real Irish pub with posters, flags, shamrocks and a hare and hound mural on one wall. Good seating and service. The menu has some traditional pub food which is great. It was a while ago so I forgot what we ate but things like colcannon, bangers and mash are on the menu plus burgers and sandwiches. We will return when in the area. read more

Another good weekend option for Rhode Islanders interested in antiques and a meal a short drive away - Putnam. You like fried food. Everyone loves fried food. Few do it well. These fine folks crunch it. Get the vinegar chips, the Irish Cuban sandwich (S L A Y S) and the fish and chips. They also have a special Guinness called "stock ale" which is a bourbon barrel aged stout at 11% on tap. Worth it to check out "the Irish spot" in ANY town, honestly, but this one is above the bar. read more

The menu options are great and many items available are unique like the Irish Breakfast Bowl (served on a hash brown waffle! Seriously!) The staff were kind enough to allow us to search for the channel playing the UEFA cup game and switch from NASCAR. Oh, five stars for sure, considering I never heard of this place until the night of September 20, 2023. I wasn't sure what to order for dinner at first, but I decided on the baked cod, and Mom said, "Make that two." Seriously, the fish was delish. And the appetizers we had were equally yummy. Anyway, Mom asked me if I felt like dancing to the Irish music playing in the background, and I jokingly replied, "The only dance I'm doing is the Penguin Shuffle back to the car." You know, because you get so stuffed you have to waddle like a penguin back to the car? Anyway, my sister ordered the brisket mac and cheese, and I'm guessing she loved it, because she wanted to keep eating more even though she was full. If the food is so good you want to keep stuffing yourself even after you're already full, I'd say we made a good choice for going out to dinner. I don't know what I'll order next time, but I do know I would love to come back again. Maybe for brunch? Who knows?
