Absolutely love this place. Tons of different teas & coffees, nuts (shelled, un-shelled, roasted, salted, unsalted, pieces, wholes....) Dried fruts. Anything you want covered in chocolate. Spices, trail mixes. Totally the ultimate candy store for semi-grown-ups. Probably about 20% more expensive than it should be, but to be expected for the main line. I do have to say that Wegman's has much of what you can get here for a cheaper price. read more

If you need coffee beans, tea leaves, spices, snacks, candy, or any other sweet tooth cravings, this is your stop. Housed in a building with a layout that would make any maze builder proud, they boast a huge selection. There are some pre packaged items but most items are stored in glass jars, which allows the customer to control the portions. I didn't count but estimate that there were of 20 types each of coffee and tea, including a coffee tea ground mix that I'm still kicking myself for not getting. In addition to the items mentioned above they also a large selection of condiments such a ketchup(one read Ketchup with Indian flavors), exotic mustards, salsa, barbecue sauce, olive oils, balsamic vinegar, etc etc etc. Then there jams, jellies and flavored butters such as apple. I just moved to the area and someone told me about this place. It was really awesome! There was so much to choose from but I ended up with some pumpkin flavored coffee and tea, you know, for the season :) Definitely a place where you can go often and still not try all they have to offer. Lots and lots of goodies! Sure I can get a lot of the stuff at the grocery store but I like to support local businesses. Not only nuts but candy, coffee, tea, spices and the list goes on. The only thing I can complain about is that it can be a little hard to get around the store because of the narrow isles, but that is it. Other than that, I like going there and always end up getting more than I intended because I find something I haven't seen before. read more

One thing other reviewers left out is the coffee and tea in the rear room. I regularly stop in to sample the large variety of both regular and decaf coffee and loose tea. I may be wrong, but according to my research, the tea collection is more extensive and less expensive than anywhere else outside Center City. read more

Inventory is quite good. Pricing isn't bad, however found Trader Joe's to be significantly cheaper for things like hulled, unsalted sunflower, pumpkin and flax seeds. Coffee/Tea selection seems especially good. read more

I had stayed away for years after a bad experience and when I took my business back to the Head Nut I found they were just as rude as ever. I called to place a special order for large candy canes. I needed 150 eight inch canes. The woman on the phone assured me they were the large canes and put the order together. After an hour drive I arrived at the shop and told the young gal at the counter I was there to pick up a bulk order. She snapped that they didn't do bulk orders and returned to her chat with the other young girls at the counter. She ignored me at that point and I had to get someone else to help me. When I got the candy canes they were not the large ones, although I had mentioned it three times to the woman on the phone. They were ordinary boxes of canes such as those you get at the supermarket for $1.29 a box. The Head Nut had them priced at $3 a box. I won't go there again. read more

Just went here for the first time today and was blown away! I never knew so many varieties of nuts and spices and candies existed! They have everything from ice cream toppings, to pastas, to coffee beans, to snack mixes. The only negative, I will say, is that it's an overwhelming amount of stuff in a small space. The hallways are packed with shelves of food, making it a bit hard to squeeze by. I actually thought the prices were very reasonable... $2 for a giant bag of unsweetened coconut flakes, $3 for a bag of dried apples, and tons of other stuff sold based on weight. I got some heavenly smelling carrot cake tea I can't wait to try! Would have walked out spending hundreds of dollars if I bought everything I actually wanted!!! read more

Received a pound of mixed nuts on 11/15/10. They are awful: stale, off, and the macadamias taste like poison! If I lived closer I'd take them back and force them to eat some. read more

Spices, candies, nuts, teas, coffees, dried fruits, bottled sauces, jams, marmelades etc etc etc, in bulk at great prices in a very inconvenient location, but it was worse years ago when they didn't have the lot next door. The Head Nut has been doing this for a very long time and he knows what he's doing stocking some items that you never heard of but all is top quality. read more

This place is so cool! Bizarre... but cool. This is a relatively new discovery for me... as I don't like nuts (no peanuts... no cashews... you get the gist) and never thought to stop in based on the name of the place. But, I got a tip that I should check it out and when I did, I was BLOWN AWAY by the crazy variety crammed into every nook and cranny of this claustrophobic little spot. While they have coffees and teas and hot sauces and candies, for me, the best part has been the spices - they have everything... and they have everything for cheap! Why would you ever go to Genuardi's again to buy a 1 ounce container of paprkia for $10 when you come to the Head Nut and buy a POUND for the same price???? My cabinets are now filled with big plastic bags filled with paprika (sweet? smoked? spicy? hungarian? 5 other choices?), lemon pepper (with or without salt?), pink peppercorns, thyme, etc. Always an adventure! read more

Somebody I know let me into some of this stores secrets. Apparently cleanliness and freshness are far from the minds of the owners (?). He told me that nothing old or out of date is ever thrown away just used in the various mixes. He said that one day somebody will get sick...as if that hasn't happened already! I guess if the customer saved some serious cash because of this practice it would be more acceptable but the prices are at a premium and the service stinks! read more

I consider it a Main Line institution: you appreciate it for its greatness and try to overlook its faults. Great for bulk items: flour, nuts, teas, coffees, spices, oats, candy, specialty Christmas food and much, much more. A small business, unimpressive on the outside, crammed full on the inside. Very good prices. Often slow at the checkout line as all of the bulk items are measured and weighed at the checkout counter: be prepared to wait 5 minutes to get to the head of the line. read more

This store is totally disorganized in terms of both finding and purchasing a spice. Plan to send a lot of time crowed into a non-line in which the order of your appearance bears no resemblance to the order you will be serviced. I walked out today after two people were taken ahead of me. Lots of people behind the counter, but no effort to serve. I won't go back. read more

I've gone back a few times and this place has grown on me. In fact, when I went the other day, I had pretty exceptional service. A dude who seemed to be the owner helped me and gave me knowledgeable recommendations on teas and spices for my valentine. Not only that, but all the employees seemed older and more professional than on previous visits. Maybe the owner gives apathetic school kids part time jobs or something, but during the weekday morning, this place was swell. read more

Always an unpleasant experience with the exception of today where Mary helped me out. Young vivacious hustling individual. She did everything right. The first positive interaction I have had with the staff. When I just happened to run in to the owner who never wants to admit he is the owner, I advised him she is by far the best person I have worked with. Rather than saying thank you, I will let her know, he advised me in a very negative way how they are having problems and he reluctantly said she was Ok but he has a problem with her young age and her wanting to go to parties. This place will never change for the better. I got home today and the macadamia nuts are so old, they are not edible and will have to return them. I have gone to this place on and off the last 25 years and only go there as a last resort and its only to get coffee if I can't find it elsewhere. The last three times I have been in there, there are usually 4 people behind the counter either eating their lunch, hand shoved in a bag of Head Nut's product feeding themselves, on their phone, or talking with one another and flat out ignoring the customer. I have recently watched them weigh chocolate pretzels reaching bare handed into the bulk container and transferring them to a small show case container. I am surprised they have not been shut down by the L&I. I asked to speak with the management and management acted like some thug who was just let out of prison who had no social skills. I asked to speak with the owner to address the concerns and I was lied to and advised he was not in and could not talk, yet there he stood in the doorway, 8 feet from manager. Today, I witnessed the staff laughing under their breath about if the customer is lucky they will see a mouse running around. Really? Its time for "Mary" to do some Crow funding and open up her own nut and spice business with the intent of running Head Nut out of town. read more

wonderful products at decent prices. miserable uncooperative staff in a facility that is short on cleanliness.love the chocolate and nuts and trail mixes. the shopping experience is difficult, awkward and time consuming. i lived in the area for decades and moved away but still shopped by phone and had orders shipped. I spent $300-400 at a clip three times a year buying goodies for myself and friends. the last order I placed they failed to pack four items( totaling about$50) and I called to inform them. They said I was in error and they said they were packed and I was wrong. I asked them to either credit me for the missing items or simply ship them to me. They fought me miserably. I had spent $400. I threatened to cancel entire credit card payment and contest it if they didn't fix the problem.It took days and many phone calls and they reluctantly shipped the items. They were nasty about it. I called last week to place a large holiday order and when the clerk was taking it, the boss must have overheard me on the phone and recognized what was my pretty standard order and took the phone and said they didn't want my order and wouldn't sell to me. I had been a regular customer for over 30 years spending well in excess of $1000 per year and that was the treatment I got. I was appalled. Not only had I been a great customer but I had referred hundreds of customers to them from my business which was right down the street. I guess they don't want my business. Maybe somebody should also tell them their staff should wear gloves when handling the food. It's a bitch to get into. That's the first thing you'll notice and also why you won't stop on a casual drive-by. It took about 3 or four years before we finally decided to check it out--Salted Walnuts, $5.95 a pound (they're now $7.95). Best time to shop is circa 10:30-11:00am--no crowds except at holiday time. Herbs and spices are cheap. Lots of stuff you can try out for the hell of it, things you've read about or picked up by word of mouth here and there. The one thing that always gripes me is that I feel I get overcharged, either they tack on two bucks here or there or they just blatantly add a few items on that I never purchased--nothing is itemized so you get home and you rack your brains for the extra two charges at $1.49 that you don't remember bringing up to the counter. Fifteen items? but I only bought 13. And yet, it's still cheaper than I could get anywhere else, with more variety. So, as my brother-in-law used to say to his children whenever they asked him to open their sodas and he would take a complimentary swig--"bottle opening tax, kids!" I'm willing to pay it, because, just like for my nieces and nephews, it's still worth it for the remainder of the bottle. read more
