I knew something had to be done because my husband and I were at the brink of insanity (not sleeping for two weeks will do that to you). After much research, I found Desiree, and I have never looked back. I have told Desiree countless times she is worth her weight in cool. Prior to hiring Desiree, we had a baby that would not sleep in her bassinet, would only nap if someone was holding her, and wouldn't really eat. I quite literally coined our baby as the "gassiest, most fussy baby," and I remember Desiree telling me, "No you don't, don't worry I got you." She explained her training program and how things would be done and we fully trusted her and her expertise. Within a few days, we already noticed a difference. Our baby was now napping in her bassinet, was eating, smiling, and RARELY crying. Fast forward a few weeks, our baby is fully sleeping through the night, from 7 pm to 7 am. My husband and I can actually have time together to have dinner and watch a show after she goes down, and it has been the best thing for our marriage. At every corner we turned, Desiree was there. Any time I needed her or expressed any sort of concern, she was there to talk me through it and guide us on what worked best for our baby. She is an absolutely incredible human being and we already know we will use her for our next baby. Since we had such a good experience, we decided to hire Desiree for a year so she can be there throughout the different milestones and guide us on what needs to be done. We hired Ashley for the birth of my second child, when I was attempting an unmedicated VBAC after a horrendous experience with my first birth. I knew I wanted labor support for this birth, but honestly hiring a doula was a little "crunchy" and outside of our realm of comfort. From the first meeting with Ashley I could tell that I was completely wrong! Ashley was so real and down to earth, and made us both feel completely at ease and prepared for our TOLAC and hopeful VBAC. During actual labor, Ashley came when I told her I needed her, and helped me to do relax through contractions and do some exercise to try to turn my posterior baby. We labored at home with her help for as long as possible, and when I felt "pushy" she got us to the hospital and into a room ready to have a baby! Her coaching through early labor, transition, and especially pushing was instrumental to my successful VBAC. She was amazing at addressing my fears during labor and made sure I was informed and felt completely in control the whole time, as well as kept my husband calm and helped him to be involved with helping me. As first time parents, we found that we didn't have a true understanding of what was best to do once we brought our little guy home from the hospital. Sure - we had read a lot and had additional support to help us get ready, but with Modern Mama, we found a professional who specializes in exactly what we needed - "what does good look like?" / "what should we be doing?" / "what are we doing right/ wrong?" From the moment that Kristin walked into our door, we were met with a calm and welcoming presence that shared recommendations for getting to sleep, eat, and dressed appropriately. She shared with us what most parents do and what is truly a choice for us. What's more, she was an incredible support for my wife who was breastfeeding for the first time, encouraging her and helping her to establish appropriate techniques and set her up with pumping appropriately, which would have taken us weeks without the support. Lastly, Kristin also followed up with us multiple times after the nights that she had stayed, seeing how we were doing and following up with great resources tied to the questions that we had + other professionals that could help with some of the areas that we were looking to develop. We'd highly recommend the support from Modern Mama and specifically Kristin as a doula for and first time parents - I truly believe they were a primary reason for us to start off on the right foot at home. She is clearly knowledgeable and experienced, and I am thankful for the role she played in my birth. During transition and pushing, she offered guidance and support that was helpful in those intense final hours. I do believe she understands birth well and brings expertise to the room. That said, there were a few things that did not sit right with me. At multiple points during contractions, when I looked up, she was visibly on Facebook and Instagram. I understand that long labors can involve downtime, but she was only physically present at the hospital for a few hours during transition and pushing. Given the relatively short window of in person support, it felt disappointing and inappropriate that she was on social media during that time. It made me feel like she was not fully present in such a vulnerable moment. There were also moments where her reactions felt disproportionate, such as when the toilet water unexpectedly splashed up. Her response heightened the situation rather than helping me feel grounded and calm. In addition, I found the overall value of the package to be underwhelming compared to other doulas I interviewed. Many offered formal childbirth classes (which were extra through MM) and ongoing support groups as part of their services, whereas Modern Mama primarily offered monthly mini classes on rotating topics, which did not always feel directly relevant or comprehensive. For the investment, I had expected more structured education and support. Though I was appreciative of the nice photos that were included. I am grateful for her knowledge and the role she played in helping bring my baby into the world, but I do wish the level of presence, professionalism, and overall value had been stronger throughout the experience. I likely won't hire Modern Mama again although I don't have experience with the other doulas.

She makes you feel comfortable the moment you walk into her office. My own personal experience started when Jacqueline was able to identify a tongue, lip and buccal ties on my 2 week old son. She provided me with a plan, exercises, pain protocols and multiple doctor recommendations to give me everything I needed to support my son. For a sleep deprived mama, it was so helpful! She gave me a detailed write up of our visit which was easy to follow. Because of Jacqueline's attention to detail, I was able to incorporate bodywork prior to the revision, feel confident following a homeopathic healing and pain protocol and confidently execute all the exercises and stretches following the revision. She was always available to ease my mind following the procedure as well. I believe the success of revisions rests heavily on the parents shoulders. You have to do it all. You need the right team of 3- a great IBCLC, a knowledgeable chiropractor to do bodywork and someone to do the revision itself. You also need to follow through with follow up appointments and commit to doing ALL the exercises and stretches. Jacqueline is a great team lead to help you manage it all! You can't put a price tag on your children's safety. It was a very reasonable price. I actually had no plans to have a doula for my first pregnancy…read moreuntil I was at a birthing class and found out that I was one of the only ones there who hadn't secured a doula. After doing some research, I found that my insurance covered doula services, so I immediately began researching doulas. I came across Noleen and noticed her across the board 5 star reviews. At this point, I was 36 weeks pregnant and thought "There is no way this woman is going to be available for my delivery." I reached out to her on a Friday night and she responded back within a few hours! We briefly corresponded over the weekend and had a meeting set up for the next week. I'm SO grateful she was available. I enjoyed learning from her and hearing her balanced perspective about labor and delivery. It quickly became apparent that as a woman going through all of this the first time, having a doula was a must! By the time I went into labor a few weeks later, I texted Noleen, who was in labor with another patient. I was heartbroken to think she may miss my labor. She was able to send a backup doula to my birthing center, but that was only needed for a few hours before Noleen went from her other labor into mine (with maybe a few hours rest in between). Noleen showed up in the morning on a Tuesday and my baby wasn't born until the following day (Wednesday) at 9:23am. So to think Noleen went from one labor to the next with very minimal rest shows that she is superwoman! My labor wasn't an easy one and I REALLY struggled to relax and just allow everything to loosen up. I would get so tense, which ended up prolonging labor to the point where I requested to be transferred from the Birthing Center to a hospital so that I could get an epidural. I was scared that Noleen, my birthing team and my spouse would be disappointed in me, but Noleen was so reassuring that this was the right move for me. I felt supported and understood. There were many moments in the labor where it was so helpful to have Noleen there to answer questions, provide perspective and expertise. Which was incredibly helpful for my spouse as well. It felt like he and Noleen were partners in the birthing process. It's now something I tell all expecting couples is that the Doula is there for the husband just as much as she's there for the wife. My husband really appreciated having her there to ask questions (and vent about the prolonged process!). I also got the package with the photography and the photos Noleen took are so very special to us. It's actually hard to narrow down which ones to frame. There is one that Noleen captured of my husband crying immediately after the baby was born. It's something I didn't notice or even see because I was so focused on the baby. But every time I see that picture, I tear up (currently tearing up as I'm writing this!). I never would have known that moment even existed without Noleen capturing it! We also had her do the postpartum visit with photos and I've sent them to so many family members and they all agree that Noleen did a fantastic job! I could go on and on, but I want others to read this, so I don't want to be too lengthy :). I will definitely be reaching out to Noleen as soon as I find out I'm pregnant with baby #2 (God willing!).
