I have used The Hearth Doctor several times for minor issues and was never overly impressed however did not have the time to research for another company. Most recently, I scheduled a visit as my fireplace pilot light would not stay on and a young man from The Hearth Doctor arrived. At first he said it was a simple issue however after FaceTiming Jerry (The Owner) he concluded he could not fix the issue and Jerry would contact me yet charged me $269 for his time? Jerry did e-mail me with 2 option: 1) Replace the entire fireplace because of a bad gas control valve - 4k-12k 2) The other option was replace the control valve, assembly and add igniter along with new leads/mounting bracket - $1800 I clearly called another company to have options and I called Glenn Medeiros from Southeastern Gas Piping & Plumbing who my building uses and I should have called first and he completely fixed the issue in a matter of 2 hours for $645 which included his time! I am in television and realize the importance of reviews (good and bad) and should have done my research before calling There Hearth Doctor however given the fact that the repair amounts were astronomical, I wanted to share so you were aware before calling as I did! Glenn also does annual fireplace inspections for half the price of The Hearth Doctor who sends young men that have to FaceTime the owner for questions and still charges the full amount! Glenn shows up himself! It feels good to share when you find someone that you trust and I would never trust The Hearth Doctor after this incident! I called to gain more info for pricing due to a request made by a buyer that made an offer on my home. When digging deeper to understand the range of pricing I might expect, I was told an inspection had to be done prior to any repairs which is not an issue. I am so very pleased with the service we received from Patrick. He arrived a bit early for the appointment and was ready to roll. We needed a new part which he had in his truck and installed. I was shown the inspection with related meter ratings and was given a clear explanation of the problem and what was the cost. All of the parts were cleaned, and the glass looks amazing. The fireplace was original to the house build in 1998 and Patrick has it looking like new with a fabulous log display and flame. Brandon, Travis and John are all excellent guys and extremely polite. Felt very comfortable having them work in and around our home. No one was pushy on selling anything. John did a great job of explaining everything to me, showed me all of the photos during our inspection and gave us lots of recommendations based on the age of our home. Beware of deceptive business practices. The technician came to our house and charged us $700 to repair our fireplace. It worked for less than 24 hours. We called the next day to have the technician come back out because they said their work had a one year warranty. They have not fixed the fireplace or stood behind their work. Now, in order to have them come back out, they are telling us it will be an additional $225 for a "return trip fee" plus the cost of labor and new parts. We feel completely defrauded and will also be filing a claim with the NC Attorney General's office for unfair and deceptive business practices. Stay away from this unethical company read more

Do not use this company for dryer vent cleaning! I paid $125 for the cleaning and they told me we had a break in the vent and the owner would have to get back with me on cost to repair. I had to call the owner days later to find out the cost and when they would come back, but he wouldn't even give me a ball park figure of cost to repair. They expected me to blindly pay what ever price they quoted after they repaired it. In addition, those idiots wanted $400 to clean dryer vent because they said it vented on the roof and the roof was steep. It vents on the side of the house ‍ I hired another company that had a $55 service fee and quickly gave me a firm price to repair which was very reasonable. They might be competent for fire place services, but are freaking clueless about dryer vents. I wasted $125 on them. read more

Yeah right that's not how it works if you don't come out and even give an estimate for a job you don't get paid for a service or service fee calling for prices doesn't count as service or service fee! These people will over charge you on a diagnostic fee, for labor and for parts. They likely won't actually fix your fireplace. The technician, Patrick, will tell you one thing in person, will give you his professional opinion, which you follow. Then Jerry will say that Patrick doesn't remember that conversation and try to charge you another diagnostic fee to come out and fix the issue. Jerry will prevent you from speaking to Patrick. They are either incompetent or liars. I strongly recommend using any other fireplace repair company than this one. read more

We had the owner of the Hearth Doctor out today to fix our fireplace. The owner was not at all friendly. After he made the repair he said the bill was $600! When he heard me he said he made a mistake, the bill was "only" $500! I felt he was shady and I felt that I had been scammed. I didn't ask him to replace the fireplace, just fix it. They came out to inspect my logs and charged me $175.00. Told me they needed to replace the gas line, which they did, but said everything else was in working order. Once I has the propane delivered by another company, the other company explained the pilot light and air sensor wasn't properly cleaned out which should have been done by The Hearth Doctor. I called The Hearth Doctor and explained my frustration in not having that done on the original inspection. I was met with curse words and yelling and was finally told that I could not prove anything so there would be no concessions given. Bottom line DO NOT USE THIS GUY. Beware! They take advantage of women! Charged me $1,001.36 to "clean and service" 3 fireplaces, fix a fireplace they told me had a gas leak and install a remote kit on gas logs. They didnt clean the gas logs (still had black soot all over all 3 of them), they only replaced some embers which I could have done myself. They claimed to give a 90 day warranty on the gas log remote kit they installed. The 1st time I tried to use the gas logs the new remote kit they installed 13 days prior didnt work. Tried for 45 days to get them to come back to fix it. They kept blowing me off and saying they were booked and would try to fit us in but they had too many new customers to fit in a service call. They did give us 1 appointment over Thanksgiving that we had to cancel because we left town to visit family. My husband called the owner Jerry to see if he could get them to come service the fireplace kit they sold me. Jerry told him it was probably just the batteries (new batteries that were just installed), an argument took place after my husband said he would blow him up on the internet with bad reviews and Jerry told my husband that he would f*** him up. My 10 year old daughter overheard this and was scared all night that someone was going to come to our house to hurt us. Great customer service! If I could give a negative score I would! I also think they lied about the gas fireplace having a leak. But what are you supposed to do after someone tells you your family's health could be at risk? read more

terrible experience. i had the hearth doctor come out to do a routine cleaning of a linear fireplace. we wanted a more red flame than the blue see through flame we were getting. that was the only issue we had before they came out. after they left the fireplace started creaking, there was bubbling of the paint above the fire place, and there was cracking in the tile of the fireplace. they offered to come back to try to figure out what was wrong and we scheduled a 3 hour window for them to show up during the work day between 2-5. the guy was running late from a previous apt and wasnt going to show ip until 5 minute after 5 and i had other apts that evening so i asked to reschedule for a saturday because i cant just be available for 3 hours during a work day multiple times. he said that was fine and would call me back to let me know which saturday they could get out to us. i never heard back. when i followed up a few weeks later they tried to say we canceled the apt and i was supposed to call them back. i let them know that was not accurate. the guy i was speaking with got extremely aggressive on the phone speaking over me and lying about what had happened. he also said he had been getting yelled at the whole morning by other customers and i honestly totally understand why. I called the Hearth Doctor based on a friends suggestion. I was having issues with my fireplace and he said they would come out and check it and because it was a sealed unit he charged a standard charge of $155. After arrival and inspection he discovered it was the wrong adapter and said he would need to order a part for it to work with LP gas and would also need a thorough cleaning because of the build up. We rescheduled him to come back after the part came in and they arrived and installed and cleaned but did not repaint the firebox like I was told. So the original visit was 99$ then I was charged 175$ for the part (which is fine) but then was charged an additional $275 in labor!! I paid and was a little shocked by the cost but paid the bill. 1 week later my wife and I turned our fire place on on a chilly morning and no fire? So I checked everything and upon going outside and checking my tank it was completely empty which had just been filled the morning before they came the initial time (with no leaks ). I called him immediately and he told me to have the tank refilled and he would be out the next Saturday to figure it out . After finding one of the fittings near the tank (which he had tightened ) was cracked and I had him replace it. After he was done he submitted me a bill of additional $145!!!!!!! Now there's a level in customer service and this is ridiculous. He was paid to make it fully operational and obviously it wasn't . He told me that pipes crack on there own but I also know if you over tighten them they crack as well. He took zero responsibility for the leak. So on top of having to pay for the tank to be refilled a second time ($58) he also tried to charge me the additional $145. And for clarification when I called him to report a problem he never said if I come back I'll have to charge you an additional service fee of x amount of dollars . This is very poor customer service and poor business practice. read more
