The place is nice, and the music was fun, but after a while it gets repetitive (some sort of techno polka). The wait was not long, only 15 min or so, for being a busy day. We got our food rather quickly and the sever was nice, although she asked if we were ready for the check when we still had more than half our food in our plate. We wanted to try some dessert, but since we felt rushed we just asked her to give us a few more minutes before bringing our check, since we were still eating. This is an old school German restaurant and bar, right by the outdoor Biergarten in Helen. They seem fairly knowledgeable about gluten, but don't have as many gluten free options as some places. Among the numerous options for German food in Helen, this is a decent choice. When we visited (Jun '23), downstairs portion is only for bar/drinking and food is upstairs. Atmosphere is definitely what you'd expect for a small Germany town - wooden floors and decor. We came hungry and started with the HB original beer! Taste of German beer is definitely amazing and unique (and reminded of my Germany visits). We debated on ordering the pretzel or the potato pancakes for starters, the latter won. We figured we can get a pretzel on the street if we want but potato pancakes are harder to come by. That was the right choice! Flavor is authentic, and when you add apple sauce and sour cream, yum! We then shared the wurst sampler and a schnitzel sandwich. Both are made fresh and tasty. I also tried sauerkraut and red cabbage as sides, and it was a bit too much. I'd pick just one and save the other choice to try a different sides. Overall, good option to consider. A very disappointing experience. The waiter was surly; he clearly didn't want to be there. He hovered as it seemed he wanted us to eat and leave quickly. The food was okay, our entrees were good, but all the sides were cold. Another staff member (not our waiter), checked in on us and we mentioned the fries were cold and soggy, he immediately brought us hot, fresh ones. The German beer was good, but the wines were terrible which is a shame as there are so many good German wines. While visiting Helen for the day I really wanted to try an authentic German restaurant. I decided to dine at The Heidelberg for lunch because the menu sounded and looked really good and the atmosphere felt like you were in Germany. Inside, the restaurant was nicely themed and decorated and there was plenty of seating. Our server was friendly, answered any questions we had and gave great recommendations. For appetizers we started with the Riesenbrezel and added the beer cheese dip for an extra $3.00. The pretzel was delicious and soft in the inside. I highly recommend adding the beer cheese dip it is worth the extra charge. We also ordered a single sausage which was one of the best sausages I've had. It had great flavor, the perfect snap to every bite and was very juicy. For entrees we got Schnitzel "Weiner Art", the Reuben House Special and the Bratwurst on a Bun. The Schnitzel came with two sides so we ordered sauerkraut and spatzle. The Schnitzel was cooked perfectly and had a nice thin layer of breading. The sauerkraut was so good, it wasn't too tangy our sour it gave a nice flavor component to the Schnitzel. The spatzle was very bland but once I squeezed lemon over my plate and combined all the ingredients together it became the perfect bite. The Reuben House Special was good. The corned beef was tender and the cheese and Bavarian sauerkraut gave it extra flavor but when we added mustard the sandwich felt complete. They do have a variety of mustard at the table which is a great condiment to add to most of their dishes. The Bratwurst on a Bun and fries were ok. The bread was soft, the Bratwurst was juicy and the variety of mustards came in handy once again to elevate the flavors. This used to be my go to restaurant when in Helen but never again. I have an 83 yr old mother who doesn't eat German food and they have in the past let her eat off of the kids menu getting the grilled cheese sandwich and our server refused to let her eat off of the kids menu. I told the family we would go somewhere else and after only taking 2 sips of the 2 teas and 1 water he gave me the ticket for the teas without asking the manager if an exception could be made. First impression: it is a VERY cute little restaurant from the outside. The actual restaurant is up on the second floor and the entrance door is not the same as the exit door, so leaving was a tad confusing. We came here on a Saturday afternoon, and we were able to get seated right away. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive. The food: we only tried one appetizer here because had the intention of hopping around to the different restaurants in the area and trying a bit of everything. We ordered the krautkrapfen, which is a flakey pastry dough wrapped around sauerkraut and bacon, then served with a Guinness-type of gravy. I had definitely not had anything like this before and it was actually really good! It was tangy and salty, the gravy was so good i could have eaten in on top of almost anything. I got the Holsteiner Schnitzel with spätzle and sauerkraut. It was AMAZING! I love capers and the capers with fried egg just set this meal apart from the rest. This is a cool spot that you need to climb stairs for to get to the dining room while they also have a ground floor bar. The upstairs dining area also has access to a nice balcony where you can also sit and enjoy a meal or adult beverages. Of all the places I ate at in Helen, GA they had the nicest selection of mustards and I do love mustard so that really made me extra happy with this location. I had the sauerbraten with red cabbage and sauerkraut except the sauerkraut had chopped up ham or some sort of other stuff in it and I really like my sauerkraut left on its own. I also had an eine maß of beer that I enjoyed which was quite refreshing. Overall I enjoyed the red cabbage and sauerbraten while my experience with the ambiance and service was also nice. This quaint restaurant is located in the heart of Helen, GA. Coming here, you feel like you've been transported to Bavaria. The ambiance is rustic and quaint, which really contributes to the overall character of the restaurant. While service can be a tad bit slow, the waitresses were all friendly. The food was quite good. I really enjoyed having the bratwurst with sauerkraut. The sauerkraut really cut through the rich meaty flavor of the sausage. The restaurant was also very generous with their side of fries. It all came out at the same time, which was perfect since we were starving from drinking and walking. The smoked salmon was fresh! I went during Oktoberfest this past weekend and decided to come here a late lunch early dinner. This is my experience. Service// Walking in from the front entrance, you are met with a very narrow staircase to get into the restaurant, this is not ideal as there were about 15 people crammed into the stairway waiting to be seated. This is an ADA nightmare, I didn't look too hard as I don't need one, but I didn't see a ramp anywhere. The waitress was not very attentive and my drink was empty each time for about 15-20 minutes each time. The food came out very quick and the servers were on point and very helpful asking if we needed refills, extra silverware etc... The Food// Starter: We ordered the Potato pancakes, and they were very good, nice crunch and crisp, paired with some great flavor and seasonings. We received 3 and they were of nice size and thickness. Main Course: I ordered the Jaegerscnitzel with Spaetzle and Mashed potatoes. This was abysmal, I tried my hardest to find any kind of flavor in this food and it was absent of any and all flavor. The Schniztel, all around, this was bland, soggy and relatively small. I dont think there was even any salt in this. The Mushroom Gravy, The gravy was almost like water, there was no flavor profile, which is ridiculous as gravy is literally meat drippings and butter. The Spaetzle, It was an attempt to say the least, it looked like they just took store bought yellow egg noodles, cut them up, and boiled them. Salt is your bestfriend with this "spaetzle" The Mashed Potatoes: The only good thing from this course, a decent serving, a good flavor, creamy but not mayo consistency. The Beer: I got the Hofbrau hefeweizen, it was stale and not enjoyable at all, I didnt even finish it. The Bill For the food, and drink the bill came out to about $50 before tip. I suggest you save your money and get a $10 sausage right outside. This food was not good, not appetizing, or appealing and I was genuinely trying my hardest to find some kind of flavor profile or even a decent smell off of the food. Having been to Germany and tasted the real food made by real Bavarians, this was a let down. We ordered the world famous Cordon Bleu Pork Schnitzel with a side of spatzles and a side of German potato salad. We also ordered a side of the Mushroom Cream Sauce to put on top of the schnitzel. The male talking about how he trims his armpits - oh wait it gets better - he said that he is unsure if he should tell his girlfriend that she need to do the same. This cause the female to spark off on her body her choice (fine I agree). Then him debuting that he's the man and he's in charge and she should do what he says. She then raised her voice and calls him sexist and a hypocrite and he wouldn't do the same to change for her. Arriving on one of the Oktoberfest weekends, we got to Heidenlberg ahead of their opening time and were the first ones through the door when they opened 20 minutes late at 11:20. Okay, fine. We were at least warmly greeted and our waiter was quick to take our orders. Beers arrived quickly, food took a lot longer. I'm thinking the kitchen wasn't quite up to speed this early, so we were watching. And yes, at 11:50 when actual food started coming out of the kitchen, ours was among the first. By this time, every table in the restaurant was in use and there was starting to be a queue at the door. I had chosen the wurst sampler and this was a serious amount of food. Three large sausages with two sides (I chose red cabbage and sauerkraut) that I could only eat about half of it. The sausages were cooked perfectly, the cabbage had just the right amount of bite to it though I thought the red cabbage was too sweet with the addition of the raisins. Smooth and stone ground mustard on the table. The ketchup was perfect on the fries that my friend had with her bratwurst sandwich. Definitely a good meal and I'm glad that we were on our way before the live music started. The recorded festhale sound was enough for us. Really excellent German food with great service (our sever was Amanda). I had the Hungarian Goulash with Spätzle and a side of German potato salad. Very tasteful and much more than I could finish. My wife had the Sausage platter with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. They graciously substituted a Veiner Schnitzel for the smoked pork chop that came with the dish. The one positive thing I can say about this place is that there's plenty of seating if you have a big party. That's about it. First off, it took at least 8 minutes of waiting at the front before anyone acknowledged us. This should have been our sign to go somewhere else but we were hungry at the time. I understand it's busy and they might be short-staffed but they had all clearly seen us standing there longer than what should be normal. When the hostess finally came out, she didn't even bother to come all the way down the stairs. Instead, asked us how many people and pointed to some open tables. Once seated, the waitress we had stopped by pretty quickly, so we thought it would be ultimately be okay. She brought us waters, which one of them had this disgusting white film on it. One we ordered our food, we never saw our waitress again except an hour later to tell us our food would be another 10 minutes (spoiler alert... It was longer than that). I know the food wasn't her fault but to not come back at all throughout the hour is unacceptable. Luckily, we had ordered beers which kept us occupied until the food came. Once the food came, here's what we got: - Jagerschnitzel - DRY! The bottoms of the schnitzel were slightly burned. Mushroom sauce was oily. - Brat platter - Brat was meh. Not much flavor. The one good thing was the mashed potatoes. - Brat Sandwiche - Brat was small and lacked flavor. I wouldn't bother to waste your money here. If it takes this long to get seated then to get food, you're better off waiting that same amount of time at the other restaurants for much better quality food. Went back on 4/2/24 and our meals were not very good. Had the sauerbraten, very bland gravy (tasted like plain brown gravy over plain roast beef), the red cabbage also did not have much flavor.
